- How do Lions, Tigers, Leopards and Cougars like to eat watermelons? Watch this video to find out! Every summer we hand out watermelons to the cats that live at Big Cat Rescue as enrichment, they love to play with them and also some of the cats actually like to eat the watermelons!
This is grrr-eat entertainment for both the cats and our volunteers and of course, it's perfectly safe for the cats to enjoy their summer treats!

I hate that they look so cute! Beacuse it makes me wanna pet them/ hug them! The thing is they would also like to hug me...with their teeth...around my neck....

As you can see, the beautiful white loin is hunting its prey- watermelon.
Watermelons live in a variety of habitats, ranging from treetops to ponds, and are mostly defenseless to the big cats. But they do have one defense, which is their tough shell and unappetizing red insides.
Surprisingly, cats like the color red, as seen with house cats and their relationship with the red dot.
The white loin sneaks up on the unsuspecting prey, slowly coming towards its hard, grass-like exterior. The lion charges- and boom, with a gaping mouth, the lion snaps the melon in half.

We get them seedless watermelons, but most of the big cats do not actually eat them.

Most of our cats are teenagers and a lot are 20+ years old! In the wild they only love around 10-12 years but with the excellent care they have at the sanctuary they live much longer.

This video is so cute and entertaining. TJ invented watermelon-flavored water! Cheetaro was brave and creative getting the watermelon out of the tree! About the sugar comment - I think it's processed sugars that need to be avoided. The amount of naturL sugars in a watermellon is probably negligible compared to the water content and also considering the size of those cats. Plus, I'm guessing, watermellons are probably not part of their regular diets. Like vegetarian eating the occaisional hamburger, no harm done.

I love seeing the playful side of the Big Cats. I find it funny how people comment on what is best for these guys when OBVIOUSLY these cats look quite happy, healthy and are monitored by trained professionals.
Think of the excersize (sp?) they get from melons and other surprises. Much better then pacing a cage all day with nothing to do to burn off that fat.

We don't feed them watermelons, they have an excellent balanced diet, this is simply enrichment, only a couple of our 100+ cats actually taste the watermelon and this is safe for them since it's mostly water and harmless :)
But to they actually ingest part of the watermelon? If so, that’s cool.

The big cats do not actually eat the watermelons. This is a form of enrichment, so it is something new they can sink their teeth into and play with.

I have heard that cheetahs will eat melons for hydration purposes and that tigers will sometimes eat starfruit. So even the so called "obligate carnivores" will eat fruit, be it for hydration, vitamins, or simply because it’s available.

Big Cat Rescue i mean a pet as like a home for rescued tigers and with a whole work force like you guys.
OK, but using the term "pet" is not a term we find appropriate and can be misconstrued into the wrong thing. We do not treat our big cats like pets, but rather like the wild animals that they are. We do not touch them, or go into enclosures with them. They are wild animals in need of a safe forever home.
