These are magnificent animals. Sightings of them used to be almost unheard of, but as humans have encroached on their territory, they are no longer rate. My mother, who would be 101 years old this year, spent over fifty years hiking in the wilderness of California, and never encountered one. In the last fifteen years four people I know encountered them within a radius of 25 km surrounding San Francisco
I grew up in Marin County north of San Francisco, half the county is real protected land, and on one particular trail intersection; there was a mountain lion warning sign that made me afraid of running into them at night, but also begin my admiration for them on top of an assembly from grade school were two captive mountain lions were brought before my class. Unless Jaguars proliferate across the southwest again, or the wolf packs return, which is thankfully happening in some areas, mountain lions love to reign as resident Apex predators with deer being their favorite food to hunt.
we have to keep these cats alive, these animals make america it's own Africa, with bears wolves coyotes puma gators jaguars in central and south america all the birds of prey we have as well.
Mountain lions in North America can weigh up 250 lbs. It is a very powerful predator. I don't know why it's not considered big. Bobcats, mountain lions, jaguars, ocelots, jaguarundi are all native to America and should be protected. Human encroachment is the problem.
I think that in English you call big cat the species belonging to the panthera genus like the lion, the tiger, the jaguar and the leopard. They are panthers, in the broad sense. The cougar, like the cheetah (which is closest to it), which can sometimes be bigger than some jaguars and leopards, do not belong to the panthera genus.
@Sims3ForeverDude nope, largest on record is 276 lbs.... I ,live in wyoming males average about 150-180 lbs theirs a decent amount of 200 pounders walking through utah
I wouldn't want these cats to disappear either they are a protected species here in CA so thats a good thing I just want them to continue being conservated in more states
Crossed paths with a cougar on a trail in SW UTAH, he was crossing the trail it was about 25 feet in front of me...a little intimidating...got off the trail into the tree line and stepped quickly out of there.
Wow! That's incredible! We have two staff members in Utah and do the bulk of our camera trapping there. We love hearing about encounters from our followers. Thanks so much for sharing!
World's highest leaper. 15-18 foot jumps from a standstill..can "love" 50-60 times in an hour...has the most diverse vocalizations of most wildcats...has the most names of any animal (world record)... have killed less humans in 100 years than pitbulls in one...is reverenced in native culture and has countless stories in folklore and the reason of skinwalker legends. Phenomenal animal. Please leave them alone.
North too ❗ Pennsylvania mountains , Seen one close not personal , perched on a rock at my daughter's bus stop ‼😮 😮 I had to look it up to make sure . Pretty yet sleek..........
I live in Upstate NY, 2 hrs drive north of NYC, and we have Mountain Lions in our area. Some speculate that the gov is quietly releasing them in a re-population effort, whereas some of the Mtn Lions appear to be tamed, as if raised by human hand...escaped or dumped pet perhaps ? Whatever the case may be, they are here !
Hi Alex! That's interesting! Thanks for sharing your experiences with us. While researchers have documented leucistic (white, but not albino) mountain lions, there has never been a documented melanistic (black) mountain lion.
Saw one while coming back from skating in this drain near a hill.it was about the size of a Rottweiler and had faint stripes. I just looked at me and walked back into the bushes really shook me up.
why are they considered small cat if cheetah can not roar either? and a puma is much bigger then it, and pumas have been known to get bigger then jaguars or leopards.
@Sims3ForeverDude pumas weigh more than leopards on average and theirs verified sources of pumas scaring jaguars off of kill sites pumas are impressive for their size
This is stevinskie I like mountain lions they are so fast they can see in the dark and they like to eat deer my dad knows all about mountain lions they can stalk their prey and kill their prey they love to eat and sleep they are really cool to me and it was my first time seeing w mountain lion for the first time at the zoo that was so cool and fun for me😎😎😎
I agree with you. I like mountain lions also. They are so cool. I am so glad you were able to see them at the zoo. They are beautiful animals. One day I would like to be able to pet one.
I don't know. I'm in NE Metro-Atlanta, and have one-half acre that is not landscaped. I've heard things at night. Maybe a small breeding population has survived.
There has been a few sightings around Thunder Bay Ontario Finally several years ago one was found expired one in bush in early spring frozen. It is now on display at museum in TBay . jg
Killing pumas and many other wild cats in any form except self-defence should be seriously punished. Hunting by those stupid men with packs of dogs and rifles should be forbidden, punished even by prison - 3-5 years for 1 puma or bobcat etc in USA! Hunters for me are primitive people and simply barbarians, with complexes. The feel strong shooting strong cat. Let they stand 1 :1 with boxer, karatekas etc. or e.g. me ! The will be taught quickly what "strong men" they are, crying as child not to beat them. Wild cats are endangered - most species of them! There are only 270-300 Syberian Tigers on the whole Earth - due to stupid, cruel hunters!!! I would never shake hands with any hunter! @Rez bird - if you afraid cats so buy fence and don't kill cats which are worth more for me than you.
Agreed 100%..Hunting with a pack of dogs is not hunting or sport as they call it. It's just killing... the dogs are doing the hunting, these so called hunter's are just patting them self's on the back as big men when most are cowards.
Homo Martian Real men don't need guns or an entourage of dogs for hunting. All cats from tigers to domestic cats are awesome. Humans can find a way to coexist with nature and these magnificent predators. Killing them is abominable.
I can guarantee you, there are no people on earth who care more about conservation than hunters. The money they pay for tags and licenses goes directly towards the forest service and conservation as a whole. Mountain lions are a species of least concern.
I love mountain lions, they are my favorite wild animal. That being said ,I think it is hilarious their email address is "mlf"...it would be even funnier if it was mlf@cougar.org
Call them Cougars! Lol. In the Pacific Northwest here in the USA, they are known as Cougars. If I were to say "Puma" nobody would know what I was talking about. Puma appears to be a European name for them?

Puma is not a European word but from an indigenous language called Quechua spoken by the natives in Peru, Bolivia and Puma means powerful in Quechua language. Learn the facts.
These creatures are utterly magnificent; alas, we don’t have them in New Zealand. I’d love to see one in the wild, but I’d probably wind up as lunch after trying to pet one. 😏
@Sims3ForeverDude which is why I said that.... pumas are the 4th biggest cat, tiger, lion, jag, then puma, then leopard, then cheetah and then snow leopard
This is a beautiful cat. A killing machine. I think we should limit our hunts, and let the Mountain Cats take the deer. If they are killing cattle, then we need to have ranchers hunt, but also use "sheep dogs" to protect their herds. Just my opinion.
