    great vid! Also tip for everyone.. another reason why you can't make your master loud might be because it is too dynamic. If there are some elements that are jumping out too much those will start to distort first as you start to raise the gain within a limiter, thus not allowing you to raise gain that much. Key: Limit and compress your elements in the individual channels/buses before you even think about mastering ;)

    • @kbmadethatshit6364
      @kbmadethatshit6364 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Also: the better the balance of your mix is the louder your mix will be, because all of your mix's elements will be closer together in dynamic range, making it look like this big thick chunk of audio file, after that you can even soft clip that waveform and you'll get masters that will be able to reach -5 ...not really saying you should, -5 is way too loud, i recommend yall just stay at -14.

    I think saturation is also huge. This is why analog studios make the big money. Their mixes can sound louder at -2db than your at home mix.

    Excited to try that multiband compressor trick. I really struggle with loudness even though I saturate and limit my individual 808s, snares, kicks, the drum bus altogether, and then for mastering use a TRS Clipper. I also recently learned about crest factor and how crucial it is in terms of your peaks being as close to the RMS as possible. Most of my songs tend to sit in the -10 and -12 LUFS range but if I could get all of them to sit in just the -9 range I would be more than satisfied. It's kinda tricky as well because some of my songs work with just 2-track instrumentals instead of the full stems so I have to work around that as well.

    Great video devvon, very helpful! One question,
    I’ve been doing some research on CTZ strategy. And it seems they use that on most bus/ audio tracks in the mixing stage.
    So my question is, do you only use the soft clipper and limiter in the mastering stages only?
    Also if there is a video of you walking through mixing a song yourself, I would love to watch it.
    Thank you for your time.

    I made music for almost 3 years and loudness was always the problem. I watched lots lots of mastering tutorial but none of them solve my problem. I almost gave up on this. But recent few months I finally began to figure it out. Your video just make me more sure about my answer is correct.
    Yes, the problem is the mix, and it's the low end. More correctly to say is the loudest element in the mix. It is not controlled well, so when I limit my song, the loudnest thing will distort very soon, and that's it! It will be the ceiling of my song's loudness, cause I cannot continue to limit my song for more loudness, it will sound terribly distorted.
    I think what cause this is because low end frequency is not as prominant as other frequency in the mix? So what I tend to do is turn it up turn it up, but I don't realize it's already too much ...
    To me this video is very on point. I can see my songs will be as loud as commercial record in the future. I didn't see any one talk about this before on TH-cam. You are legend bro.

    • @claudio509
      @claudio509 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Bruhhh... I was literally in the exact same situation. I could never push my limiter past a couple LUFS beyond where my favorite artists had theirs, without horrible distortion. Dude is just a goat man. You can seriously tell the difference when someone is really trying to help you better yourself versus those who are just spilling ideas in a short video and making it seem like there's nothing else to what they're showing you smh. • @dura3775

      Yh it will be turned down cause the streaming services want all the songs to have the same LUFS to avoid a sudden change in loudness when the next song comes in, but its good to have your song at -12/-9lufs cause you will have more dynamics.

    So just to straighten something out, I noticed that in one of your mastering videos you applied soft clipping and limiting towards the latter half of your master. I was just wondering if we should be putting soft clipping on the end step of our mixes along with the limiter or on the mastering. Because as far as your mixing tutorials go, you only applied a multiband c4, nls buss nevo and a j34 tape at the end of your mixes. So would this video only apply to mixes that are too quiet? Videos I'm referencing: th-cam.com/video/3GdjUCMFyxk/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/Z0GoZ_Wn1f4/w-d-xo.html thanks and keep up the great content!

    • @Elquido
      @Elquido 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Usually, you make a mix louder at the end so all the clipping and limiting is done then because you’ll be getting essentially a better picture of the sound when it’s not limited.
      You can do the other stuff on your master if you require it. (REMEMBER EVERY MIX/MASTER IS DIFFERENT SO THERE IS NO NEED TO COPY AND PASTE A SIGNAL CHAIN, JUST MAKE SURE YOU HAVE REASON TO DO WHATEVER YOU’RE DOING)
