I've been watching a lot of videos on voicings but this is the one I've been looking for the whole time. I've already had somewhat of an understanding of the theory behind voicings but this video finally gave me some practical and actionable advice on how to actually play them. The common, general advice was always to "just start playing lead sheets" and I'd sit down and not know what to do other than the basic LH voicings based on 3rds but now I'm excited to try this out and build up my voicing repertoire and muscle memory.
I Have Been Primarily A Vocalist Who Plays Keyboards In Bands Mainly For The Past 57 Years and Who Recently Have Endeavored To Seriously Acquire The Art Of Solo Jazz Piano Playing To Accompany My Singing Voice and Have Over The Past 7 Or 8 Years Taken Lessons From Private Teachers Here In My City and Various You Tube Videos But I Have NEVER Yet Encountered a A Teacher Of The World-Class Caliber As That Of Master Pianist and Teacher Jonny May !!! In This Video Alone, I Have Grasped Voicing Concepts In A Few Short Minutes That Are THOROUGHLY Explained Like NO ONE Else Has Even Come CLOSE TO In My Experience!!! In My Humble Opinion, Jonny, You Are The Finest, and The Greatest Teacher Out There, Brother!!! Bar None!!! and Thank You For Finally Explaining and Unlocking The Techniques For These Utterly Gorgeous and Shimmering Jazz Chord Voicings!!!👍👍🎹🎼🎵🎶❤👍👍
These chords on how to play them have been a mystery to me for so long thank you for explaining them so well in a way that makes sense finally feel like I will now be able to play them
Fellow jazz pianist and piano teacher here-great job on these lessons! Clear explanations, nice graphics, precise playing, approachable teaching style-loved it.
You certainly can and it will help when you go to play with other musicians. Focus on rootless chords and the other one that did the 3 and 7. That way you don't step on the bass player's toes
Thanks Jonny. I started learning Autumn Leaves recently but I didn’t know what and how I wanted to play it. This video really helped me learn different techniques that I can also use in other songs. Thanks so much!
You should be getting 1 million views!! 115k views..that's insane for such wonderful and easy to understand jazz theory & application . Great information 👍
Thankyou so much for spending your valuable time teaching Jazz, just a question, for a guide tone when to consider a Major 7th and a Dominant 7th. Seeking your inputs.
Professional musician here on the classical/opera side, but I always wanted to play jazz piano. This is the video I’ve been looking for! Thank you!! Can’t wait to try this on some charts tomorrow.
The advice in this video is great, but what if I’m in a band and someone else is playing the melody? You only covered how to play the chords with your left hand along with the melody, but what if my left hand is also free to add to the chord?
I would check out this Quick Tip: pianowithjonny.com/piano-lessons/quartal-voicings-blues-band-accompaniment/ We also have courses on this in our paid membership.
Johnny my man in piano! I wish i could play only one procent like you on piano! Im gonna learn so much i can so i can recommended your videos (im a guitarrist). You are a great musician and i am drunk just now😃😄😄😃
This is great lesson. I would really appreciate a lesson on when and how to use the pedal. Because in all of your examples your notes are sustained, and the sound is very full. But you don't say how you achieved the sound QUALITY. Please help.
Merci for this. I'm working on my chops. I started with vegan chops, since I thought it would be better for the planet. But my Mom used to cook us pork chops, but my favorite was lamb chops. Looking at this lesson, I have a certain Pavlovian reaction and am starting to salivate already. BTW I've seen many pianists complain about finger strength, piano pains and tension. I have filmed a video about exercises for the pianist, that is to say for the person sitting at the piano for their body. My daughter is doing the editing but is in the middle of editing for a TV show and it won't be ready until August. I'll let you know the link once it's up. Stay tuned.
The year is 2024 and a white man is teaching me jazz. I’m eating carrots with no ranch inbetween practicing piano. He tells me I am the dream I have always wanted to become. Can’t tell if it’s ranch on my pants or if I’m just happy to have someone believe in me. I am now Red Gardland.
I made multiple attempts to sign up. I reached out to you multiple times and you NEVER REPLIED! So it’s annoying that you keep showing up in my TH-cam feed. :(

Just be confident and you’ll do fine.
Nice ...just the block chord voicing with melody in octaves with chord tones in the middle is called locked hands ...
Great tutorial
Merci de France ! Great !
Thanks jonny
great.. watching from philippines
are the rootless voicings always interchangeable with the root notes or only in the case of this song?
Using your suggestions, I would like to sing the melody rather than play the the melody. What should I do with my right hand?
Great. Just a question: do you mix different styles in the same song?
Great stuff
Thank you so mutch. The Em would be nice as Em6..?
Whats about the 9th on the Quarter Voicings?

I'm a beginner on jazz piano and cant understand the shell voicing because my left hand is keep going down..
i dont know how to play the last part,,
Right, the left Hand goes down and down and down and down, but at the end you can just start at the beginning and jump with your hand up.
Is the last part played in the vid?
I love how he says " it's actually a simple idea" every time but it's not simple at all lol
Mostly the idea is simple but the practical playing not.
