If you're considering getting the HD edition of the game, don't. A vast majority of the levels has been cut out for no apparent reason. The Black Edition of the original has 24 levels (5 chapters) plus 11 that are added through the Battle Out of Hell expansion pack for a grand total of 35 levels. This one has only 13 of those levels, 4 of which are taken from the Battle Out of Hell expansion and the rest of them are either unavailable or sold as separate DLC. Not to mention the enemy variety being reduced and music tracks being cut.
we're not worthy!!! hi there mr total biscuit! thanks for the video, we just laughed our arses off watching it, great commentary as usual! regarding your question to the OST: we will partially use the old one and in certain maps we feature a German heavy metal band called "ojos rojos" (red eyes, we don't know where these might be coming from, seriously)... you can play with or without vocals (options menu) of their tracks on specific maps, as you like. more questions? shoot them our way!
I thought Overdose and the others were ok. The level designs weren't quite the best but overall I thought they were decent. I really liked this version, at least the lighting was nice but it is a testament to how well done the original PK engine was for it's time. I found this game too short and it's a shame they just didn't redo the original levels since these were very similar anyway but fewer of them.
A friend of mine never wanted to try out the original Painkiller and the other games from the series, now, i'm sure he will definately try it out, the HD version is a good introduction to the game series indeed for those who haven't played the original, thank you TotalBiscuit for all the work you do for us, your subscribers, thanks to you, i've saved a bunch of money. Thank you very much for all your hard work sir, please keep it up!
It's crazy how the HD remake of painkiller still looks like it plays way worse than the original. The original doesn't even have dated graphics and is quite easy to jump into. Easier than original Doom or Quake. This just seemed like such an unnecessary failed attempt.
The color palette is a disgrace. The green "souls" look like they jumped out of an 1999 game a huge step back. The skeleton enemy is the worst skeleton model I have seen for a while....the original monsters look way more detailed.
I couldn't get the "Painkiller" feeling until you've put the soundtrack/gun sounds on! Then I got chills everywhere, and it suddenly felt completely amazing and the game felt awesome. This is how sequels should be, thank you for covering this TB.
He really really did not influence the way I talk and write though. Seriously, since I started watching WTF, the 'quality' of my english has improved quite significantly =) Thank you for that Totalbiscuit
WOW! This looks extremely well executed even this early in development! You can tell that Nordic Games are fans of the original Painkiller. Everything looks just like I remember it but much more detailed and fleshed out. Also nice real time area lighting :) Its so great to see the good old shotgun is still working like it should haha. I love the massive recoil and that you can send guys flying with it. I will definitely be buying this! Go Nordic Games. Bring back the mindless fun!
the original has to be my favorite shooter of all time. i think it must be a combination of well designed weapons, awesome music, and turning into a bad ass demon. love it!
Looks kinda like it'll do for Painkiller what Black Mesa did for Halflife. I thought it was just going to be a straight graphical port, but I suppose there's nothing wrong with making some changes, to make the experience fresh for those of us who have played the original to death. Kudos to TB for recognizing the differences between the Painkiller and Serious Sam games and the Doom-like games.
I was concerned when I first heard they were re-designing the levels, but I can see now I have nothing to worry about. This actually looks like a pretty good HD remake.
originally, we wanted to put a light green font on to a pink background with Rick Astley, Chuck Norris and the epic sax guy on it, then we went for the current design. sorry you don't like it, we might change it to our first approach on the release day of painkiller, though ;)
man, the first Painkiller... it was such a happening in Poland, the game costed like 5 euro and it just blew my mind! Awesome oldschool stuff right there, hope they won't screw up the HD version!
I know what painkiller was but I never played it. TB, you made me get Painkiller and for that you are now the crowned jewel of the human race. If we meet aliens bring them painkiller and we will become their gods.
I was introduced to painkiller from redemption and instantly fell in love with the series now im dreading why i didnt play this earlier. YOU, YOU thats reading this comment, this is your fault for not telling me about this game!
… I’m so happy. I got Painkiller when I found it at the store, it just seemed like something to fool around with but after I started playing I instantly fell in love with it. I am going to buy this when it comes out. It’s bound to be a ton better than all the other dull FPS games out there.
Painkiller has always been my chill mode game. Put on some music, blast stuff to hell for a couple hours. I find it soothing. This version looks nice. I'll put this on my list.
Oh god damn it TB, you just reminded me of "Shuriken's and lightening, very very frightening me." Not sure where I heard that, but my mate showed me it years ago lol.
I enjoy TB's material, it's a great stable source of entertainment and sometimes food for thought. As for the problem - it's understandable, game commentators usually have go-to/catch/signature phrases(though they sometimes become parasite words) and expressions. The problem here lies in the overwhelming amount of content being made vs the limited amount of "signature" expressions used. Also, as many, he has a tendency to use decimate instead of oblitirate/annihilate/synonims. It's not fatal.^_^
Random but it was a surprise when I heard TotalBiscuit's voice, when I played Space Pirates And Zombies in the latest Humble Bundle. His voice is too epic.
This was a delight to watch, TB. You've been referencing Painkiller enough by now in the past. And I'm pretty sure I'm part of the generation that just happened to miss it. Was one of those old(er) games that were in the discount bin and nobody knew anything about. Shame, it is mine, for I believed those two Halo-heads that it probably wasn't as good. (To just clear up, I've no love for Halo or its franchise.)
Okay TB, you convinced me, I have to have this game. Never got the chance to play the original, sadly, but now I totally have to! Let the bodies hit the floor!
There's actually more to this game than simply shooty-shooty bang-bang. The shooting is nice, but it's not the reason why Painkiller remains my top FPS game to this day. Here are some things: - Amazing intricate level design. Most of the levels in the later game are very complex, with lots of hidden stuff and fun to explore. - The atmosphere and ambient music are also quite spectacular. Search youtube for 'painkiller docks walkthrough - you'll see what I mean. Damn you, 500 characters.
I havn't had a grin like this for years. just watching this game gave me such a good feeling. At this point I don't care if it's a full priced game. I'm getting it.
The oryginal + Battle out of hell was made by People Can Fly (Polish dev). Every other painkiller was made by other devs (overdose was made by czech if I remember well...). Now remake is made by yet another company?
Just to clear things up: this game is produced/published by Nordic Games, but DEVELOPED by Farm 51, a polish developer. In case you don't know, the original Painkiller was also made by polish developer, People Can Fly.
My god this is honestly the most greatest thing I've seen this month. I'm torn if I'll get either this or dishonored next month.... Oh the decisions...
Also this game is being made by The Farm 51, a studio formed by a bunch of former People Can Fly devs, they've also made NecroVision, one of the best Painkiller spiritual successors to date, never mind that tech demo that was BulletStorm.
Not sure what this has to do with Painkiller, a game that has quad-shotguns and guns that shoot shurikens and lightning. Yeah I've been to the range plenty of times. First time I did it was when I was in Arizona for the MMO talk I did at that University back in 2006. Shooting is a great deal of fun.
Had me at 21:17! I was thinking "You can't mess up the Painkiller... It's not JUST a spinning thing, it's a spin and launch, pull enemies, set up traps, A BUCKET OF FUN! But they still had it! Thank god! :D I might buy this... Probably will, if they stay true to the first...
well that...that looks just great. Cannot wait for this. Was very pleased to see they put the old painkiller in the station as well. Music is just as epic as ever and I'm not even into metal ^^
I really hope this does well and brings back Painkiller as a good series, Its a shame its not using the DLC maps, those were awesome, but I'm just happy to see an actual decent game coming.
Look, all of you are criticizing TB and his mannerisms, but this is a work in progress. What you don't seem to remenber is that, at the end of the day, beta is beta and you just have to bear with it.
when the original first came out, its was undeniably a great game, seeing a cool remake of it, which doesn't suck so much as the other ones, is cool too. and maybe he is forcing himself too, but I do agree with him saying ' this is great for younger people who missed the original.'
TB talks about how guns "feel" not about gun realism. When you shoot something in a game it is usually satisfying to see that it made a difference so usually visual impact and visual recoil make huge difference. Gun realism would usually apply to a SIM or something.
This is yet another game that really shows how much console have held PC back, even a small team can make such a nice looking game and AAA cross platform still looks like crap. Clean motion blur, good use of bloom, DoF. Nice texture detail. Things are very clear and easy to identify. There are no need for unnecessary and overused effects to cover up low poly models and crap texture. I'm impressed
22:05 this part had so much more influence on me liking the game compared to everything else in this video, shows how much the sound and music can do with a game.
I'd say this is what I want in a HD remake, basically the same game just a bit of tweaking to make it a better experience. Not to mention better graphics
Cool thxs for reviewing this. I was looking into the game (seeing as i have never played the painkillers before and like the whole heaven and hell thing). Guns look cool but I do feel it's another serious sam (which to be got boring however this does look more grittier) BTW the guy at the end is like the Butcher from Resident Evil (it has those nails in its head)
Actually, when you factor in the early fanmade mods for Doom, and how they can sometimes be even more popular than the base game itself. It's likely that they are talking about some of the early slaughterhouse map packs for Doom made, like Hell Revealed, Kama Sutra or Scythe.
It actually is. The like/dislike function should be used to comment on the video's quality, not something as subjective as 'I'm easily motion sickened,' or 'it rained today so everything sucks.'
There are lots of places in the Doom series where you are locked in a room and need to clear it of enemies, also some levels on harder difficulties were fit to burst with baddies. Painkiller and Serious Sam introduced a sub genre on that idea.
True enough about the retail Doom, but there were several single player mods that did in fact throw crazy amounts of monsters at you. I recall an aerna-style map that took about 45 minutes to complete just because of how many mobs you had to dispatch.
You wanna know why people still enjoy older games? It's because they were so polished. Because, as you said, they were very 'simple' the developers weren't stretching themselves over too many concepts, and were able to truly focus on one or two, and making them work as well as they possibly could. I can't blame people for wanting good, polished games, no matter how 'simple.'
As a guy who played incredibly silly amounts of doom, there is one thing I would like to point out. There were a few levels that locked you into an area until you killed everything, but it was fairly rare. Painkiller and whatever else was similar to it was a different beast to be sure of though.
Watch the rest, the weapon he thought was the painkiller actually was not, the painkiller is shown in the video when he started the train level. ( He also corrected himself when he noticed it. )
Yes it would. Painkiller was wildly accepted as being amazing when it was an original IP. Even Yahtzee did a massively favorable love fest on Painkiller.
Actually the "shoots shurikens and lightning" weapon Yahtzee was referring to was ALSO not the Painkiller. The painkiller is the weapon TB is referring to correctly, it was a rotating blade that could be shot towards the enemies. He possibly believes that the weapon got a revamp or something as this weapon also has a rotating blade and beam.
Sadly you would be wrong, in this iteration of Painkiller the first guns you get are the "Reaper's gun" and the classic shotgun /freezer. Starting with the stakegun/grenade launcher would be fun but you have to find that along with the Painkiller (which I find a little odd, but the Painkiller in the right hands was a devastating non-scoped "sniping" weapon using the 3rd attack mode, with a guaranteed "insta-kill")
Loved 'Painkiller', Loved 'Battle out of hell' (the expansion), but then I bought 'Overdose' and OMG I know they said it started life as a mod but for me it was STILL a mod when they released it. Haven't bothered with a painkiller game since then but this looks NICE.

HD's not on steam apparently? Kinda weird.
yeha they milked everyone with dlc
we're not worthy!!!
hi there mr total biscuit! thanks for the video, we just laughed our arses off watching it, great commentary as usual!
regarding your question to the OST: we will partially use the old one and in certain maps we feature a German heavy metal band called "ojos rojos" (red eyes, we don't know where these might be coming from, seriously)...
you can play with or without vocals (options menu) of their tracks on specific maps, as you like.
more questions? shoot them our way!
have totalbiscuit and yahtzee ever talked to each other?
TB I'd just like to say I appreciate the moments you've been putting in to these WTFs to focus on the music.
I thought Overdose and the others were ok. The level designs weren't quite the best but overall I thought they were decent. I really liked this version, at least the lighting was nice but it is a testament to how well done the original PK engine was for it's time.

TotalBiscuit: "Including stake launchers!"
Me: "Mmm.... steak launchers... yum..."
i really enjoy the way you bring us footage of games that have not came out yet or even started beta. pretty cool stuff :)
It's crazy how the HD remake of painkiller still looks like it plays way worse than the original.
The original doesn't even have dated graphics and is quite easy to jump into. Easier than original Doom or Quake. This just seemed like such an unnecessary failed attempt.
This video just made my day. I used to play Painkiller non-stop in 2005 and I'm so glad that this looks and (apparently) plays this good.
The color palette is a disgrace. The green "souls" look like they jumped out of an 1999 game a huge step back. The skeleton enemy is the worst skeleton model I have seen for a while....the original monsters look way more detailed.

Sir. TotaBiscuit, I just bought Painkiller collection, is any good? Thank you.
He really really did not influence the way I talk and write though. Seriously, since I started watching WTF, the 'quality' of my english has improved quite significantly =)
Thank you for that Totalbiscuit
"It shoot shurikens and lightning. I wish I could make that up." Classic.

Man, this looks FANTASTIC! I think it's right up there with the Serious Sam HD remake. Definitely going to have to check this out.
No, it is a series that he posts every once in a while. Really good games that didn't get the attention they deserve.
I was concerned when I first heard they were re-designing the levels, but I can see now I have nothing to worry about. This actually looks like a pretty good HD remake.

Painkiller had some of the most terrifying boss battles ever. Especially the first big guy. :x
There's one for the box TB.
"A kickin' rad soundtrack!"
-Totalbiscuit
When TB Laughs wholeheartedly while playing a game, you know its a good one. :D Love it!
I know what painkiller was but I never played it.

I was introduced to painkiller from redemption and instantly fell in love with the series

YOU, YOU thats reading this comment, this is your fault for not telling me about this game!
This is not a threat, this is an incentive.
Great job so far! Can't wait for the finished product. Thanks to both you and TB!
… I’m so happy.

Aww man so much nostalgia...
I used to love this game back in the day
It is the standard weapon in the game. In the original Painkiller game, it was a melee/fireweapon. Nasty thing^^
rest in peace man
Oh god damn it TB, you just reminded me of "Shuriken's and lightening, very very frightening me." Not sure where I heard that, but my mate showed me it years ago lol.

Jesus TB is just spitting videos out left and right.
Excited to try this one out. Thanks for the beta preview!

oh man, quake III arena. Just reading your comment i got goosebumps right now, awsome game!

I would hope so. It would be nice for a new generation to be introduced to Painkiller like this.
I love these kind of games, I even liked them when they were the old school versions and im 14, I hope more people my age buy this.
I havn't had a grin like this for years. just watching this game gave me such a good feeling. At this point I don't care if it's a full priced game. I'm getting it.

These devs made Necrovision and were part of original team
That gave me tons of hope day 1
all other badassness is just the cherry on top
Also this game is being made by The Farm 51, a studio formed by a bunch of former People Can Fly devs, they've also made NecroVision, one of the best Painkiller spiritual successors to date, never mind that tech demo that was BulletStorm.
Painkiller was the first fps besides DooM that my sister enjoyed, we had tons of Fun playing this in LAN back in 2004/05
Not sure what this has to do with Painkiller, a game that has quad-shotguns and guns that shoot shurikens and lightning.

Yes, full LAN support for all playmodes.
I absolutelly love the art assets.
Got a bunch of shots yesterday, got a little sicky as a result. I'm over it now though.
Damn, 2004. Can't believe its been that long, loved the original.
well that...that looks just great. Cannot wait for this. Was very pleased to see they put the old painkiller in the station as well. Music is just as epic as ever and I'm not even into metal ^^

And just for information, Marcin Czartyński is the author of the original Painkiller soundtrack.
when the original first came out, its was undeniably a great game, seeing a cool remake of it, which doesn't suck so much as the other ones, is cool too. and maybe he is forcing himself too, but I do agree with him saying ' this is great for younger people who missed the original.'

Painkiller Overdose was either the best or the second best in the series (after Painkiller Heaven got a Hitman)
Finally! Loved the original one, pretty sure I'll love this one as well!
It actually is.
The like/dislike function should be used to comment on the video's quality, not something as subjective as 'I'm easily motion sickened,' or 'it rained today so everything sucks.'
Still missing TB..
There are lots of places in the Doom series where you are locked in a room and need to clear it of enemies, also some levels on harder difficulties were fit to burst with baddies. Painkiller and Serious Sam introduced a sub genre on that idea.
It looks a solid HD version. Can't wait.
"how many stakes can we fit in his gob..." possibly the greatest remark ever.
These WTF is videos just never gets boring, do they?
Painkiller. My first thought was "Judas Priest?", then I actually watched the video. I am suddenly going to preorder this on Steam.
17:35 the saw still rotated a little bit after embedding itself. Minor details are so cool...
True enough about the retail Doom, but there were several single player mods that did in fact throw crazy amounts of monsters at you. I recall an aerna-style map that took about 45 minutes to complete just because of how many mobs you had to dispatch.
22:00
The battle music in Cemetary was the original as far as I could tell. But this is DEFINITELY a new song. And it's pretty kick ass.
SO much buy.
I'm so glad that this franchise is getting a second chance, same as with Serious Sam.
Concept looks so simple, but it looks so goddamn fun!
Total biscuit, I'm not to bothered about the game-play(Even though it looks fun) but, your commentaries are pretty much amazing.
" but any critisism i find is imideatly squashed when i remember that one of the guns shoots shurikens and lightning!" -Yahtzee
This game looks very old school fps. almost brings a tear to my eye.
Played the original and was awesome.
Lets hope the HD version adds a new coat of paint when it releases.
Weapons look great also.
TB thanks for bringing this awesome game to us! it looks so fun!
I'm glad you and others can enjoy an update to this game, TB. You seem very passionate about it. Just not my type of game, unfortunately.
Oh man, I loved the bridge map on the original version!
Oh god Im so excited. I really hope that this game will be as awesome as the original.
Sadly you would be wrong, in this iteration of Painkiller the first guns you get are the "Reaper's gun" and the classic shotgun /freezer.

"Get great weapons, fight huge bosses, and do it with a metal track" - TB 2012.
