Horse archery isn't a very European thing. Very asian style of combat. there used to be english bowmen mounted on horses, but they did not actually shoot from the horses, they used it for transportation on caqmpaign and on the battlefield and to transport equipment and loot though.
For those who bought the game and are upset about the F2P version of this game, the demo of WotR has just simply been renamed to F2P on Steam. You can play online for an unlimited time, but you're given access to the 4 default classes only (longsword guy, sword with shield guy, bowman and poleaxe guy). No customization (which is a huge part of the game) and no tutorial access in the F2P version. Some people complain about the game being pay-to-win, and they're both right and wrong. Yes, the F2P version does not get access to some powerful weapons, including crossbows, the warhammer and the horse. Nevertheless, the F2P gets access to the powerful poleaxe and you can get quite far in a game with that alone (simply ask any WotR player his/her opinion on the poleaxe and most will call it an overpowered weapon). Also, the best weapons/customizations can be bought with in-game currency and they're most of the time the cheapest to buy.
Also, one thing he doesn't touch on (and perhaps it wasn't in the game when he reviewed it) is blocking/parrying. If you have a shield, you hold block and hold up the shield, pretty straightforward. If you're using a two-handed weapon or don't have a shield, you use your weapon to Parry but it's slightly more complicated: you press the block button, then you must select a direction to parry, which (usually) must match the direction/type of the opponent's attack. Very tough!
brawlybullet You can't... The game is rigged to only do damage 1 time with 1 attack. A swing/stab/throw of a weapon is 1 attack. What you saw was something else. Like riding over 1 person knocking him unconscious while finishing off another with your weapon, or similar. I'm not guessing here. What I'm telling you is that the chance of it happening is as big as you growing wings and shooting lasers out of your eyes.
AtotehZ you say that like you cant grow wings and shoot lasers out of your eyes. but okay i expect that it was one of my allies killing an enemy during one of swings and making it look like a dual kill.
They should make the spawn points really cool like you climb out of an underground passage in an abandoned building or something like that. That would really make my day
I am very happy that totalbiscuit REALLY emphasized his hatred of the squad spawn mechanic. Totally ruins moments where you are beating down a dude and suddenly find yourself surrounded in a empty field by three fresh enemies who spawned.
Just picked this up and I find it fantastic. I was originally put off by the kill streaks and other such nonsense but now I love it as it makes the game truly hilarious. I feel as if it was put in to be a joke, to make a humorous crack at call of duty. Something about the brutal nature of the combat and hearing 'Killstreak!' is just hilarious. Love every minute of it. Not a game to get religiously into, but definitely something perfect to get some easy fun with.
This game would be perfect if: 1. They added a seige mode. Basically an attack & defend, where one team defends a castle, and one attacks. Maybe amp up the player limit to 80 or somethign for this gamemode. 2. Add a realism mode for each game type (Realism Conquest, Realism Seige, etc...). In this I would like to see no squad spawn, higher damage, limited hud, and maybe some other stuff. This and Mount & Blade are the top 2 games that I want right now, they each do their own thing nicely.
People can recognize differences in frames up into the multiple hundreds. Movies work at 24 frames because it's recognizably smooth to the eye without being choppy. The smoothness comes from your eyes and brain filling in the visual data between frames, giving you immersion into the movie.
Rainy cloudy weather is beautiful and awesome when u get to stay inside with ur cup of tea a good book or some recorded shows to watch. It is dreadful when u have to be somewhere and have to leave the house while its raining.
I happen to know that Robin, the lead programmer at Fatshark, is pushing for a Battle mode with no respawning possible. There has also been hints about a 'siege'-type gamemode. More armor and weapons are hinted as well (a "Knights Hospitallier" style armor of a coat above mail seems to be popular with Gordon, the Producer)
There were other reasons why the mongols accomplished such dominance. Genghis Khan was extremely effective at uniting different factions, and the mongol generals exercised superior strategy (i.e. they would watch battles from afar and communicate with their forces using flags rather than charge into the fray like their western counterparts). Also, the British actually held the world's largest empire. As for horse archery in the game, the developers could have easily modified it to be balanced.
I remember in Mount & Blade as a horse archer you could solo entire 20 or 30-member groups of sea raiders because none of them had bows and they all moved so slowly with their heavy armor and shields.
I think the death of longbow was for a variety of reasons. Firearms weren't the only one - they were still using mathlock arquebus in the 17th century (very unwieldy).
i just played this game today i have played 1 match so far..... i already love this game, this is by far the best game i have played, i look foward to playing with all of you.
If there friendly fire in the game? And how is the four directional attack system handled, like M&B where you hold the attack button and sweep the mouse in a direction? Or did they switch to a different method? Great video, I'm looking forward to your WTF Is... Chivalry when it comes out (assuming you plan on doing on), so I can decide which to pick up this winter :)
As a matter of fact, I saw TB's recent vid of "Ask TB Anything: Director's Cut" and loved watching him play the new game (chivalry medieval warfare). It certainly looks very promising. I think my only complaint for it so far is I find the FOV looks... rather strange. I don't know if it's just me, or possibly because that's how TB likes to play. Thanks for the reply though Brick.
The original comment was referring to how TH pronounces it the way most English do, placing an R at the end. You'll hear this in many words ending with an A sound, from both English and southern American accents.
My mother works as a nurse and my dad works with people who need food stamps. There barley getting by with tow full time jobs. They have a lot of bills to pay (Mortgage, Car payments (2 fairly old cars.), water, electric, and heating bills) That adds up to be a shit ton of money mate. Just because you have a good paying job doesn't mean you can afford to keep your car, house and appliances running AND have money to 'afford' PC gaming.
I love how TB praises the dreary, rainy weather effects in the game, saying "you can't really complain about that, it's beautiful", and in one of his recent videos talks about how the weather in England is absolutely dreadful for the same reasons XD
The first time I played this, I was being executed, when an ally sent an arrow straight into the head of my killer. I was very impressed by this shot. Just wanted to get that out there.
If you don't know, TB runs a 120 Hz monitor. So he's running games at 120 FPS. I wasn't talking about my monitor or your monitor. In this case, I was talking to Bluedeat-guy about TB having the game dip below 60 FPS - which is a bad thing for HIM because he can run it (theoretically) at 120 FPS.
Leg? You hit that guy in the crotch! I got Chivalry for free, but his looks better. How does it compare gameplay-wise? I'll check out the comparison vid. I agree on "Conquest" games. I only play Rush in Battlefield.
The execution is supposed to be the use of a Misericorde (Mercy Blade), a weapon used to put dying enemy knights out of their misery after they are hacked and smashed and left half-dead in EXTREME pain... but they did not make it thin enough, and it is supposed to be a quick, simple stab through the armpit or eyes.
Friendly fire goes back to yourself, as of what I've experienced so far at least. It handles like in M&B, what I've felt so far at least (yes, a lot of "so far:s" ;D). I can't talk bad about what I've seen from Chivalry in any way, but as TB said, this is very authentic! And personally, what I've seen from Chivalry it feels a little bit too slippery, or what to say. But it's up to you I guess, and I also guess that you should really listen to TB rather than me! ;)
26:30 to 26:40 You say, if were talking about realism lets not spawn people right beside their team leaders... Well, reality was that, when people assaulting a castle or any other emplacement, they would go all together and they would stay beside each other. More realistic than having 1 troop reinforcement being sent on the battle. and having to walk all the way. Another approach would have been to wait before spawning and spawn in groups. if you want them to spawn far away.
This may be me just wanting it really bad, but I think this would be a great game to get some kind of workshop going for it. Mostly I say this because just a handful of dedicated mapmakers could greatly extend map availability with several true to landscape maps.
this game is still very fun although there are now a micro-transaction option which you can purchase coins with real money to buy gears right away rather than saving up coins from many matches. A very good medieval combat simulator
after playing for a day, i think it isn't too bad for 1v1 because when you spawn in usually it takes a second to get your bearings especially if dropped into a huge fight, so people can usually run away if they don't like the idea of a 2v1. the game is fucking incredible by the way, you should get it, it's so much more fun than i have in any shooter like counterstrike or bf3..
It is it was renamed "War of The Roses: Kingmaker" the old download downloads a client where you can go in and play but you only have the starting class.
Sight is basically our eyes perceiving light and our brain interpreting it into a logical image. There is no such things as a "maximum FPS" in nature, cause the only time you could actually reach that point the screen would play so many frames your brain would be unable to distinguish the light and it would be a constant image of noise so NO the brain does not have a maximum FPS only a point where the brain can't distinguish the light anymore.
I paid $20 for this game. It is awesome. I rarely say that these days. 2 days later, they released the "free unlimited demo." Not even mad. I love this game, If I got it for free, I'd have bought coins anyway to support it. Play this game. (Since this video, they have added TONS of new weapons, have toned down the bills and axes, and horses feel very balanced. There is also a new game mode, Assault... Still needs some tweaking, but it was added 2 days ago, and it's fun.)
I think that this game looks pretty solid and i agree compeltely with total biscuits views, but i should think the devs can patch more game modes in and a major patch for combat
Actually no, the company that made mount and blade published this game, fatshark made it. This game comes out like, as many people have perfectly said "A medieval 'Battlefield' game" You have classes and earn money/level up as you play, spend that money to unlock what you want. I personally enjoy it much more than M and B, much more in-depth.
I feel like this is a medieval version of Battlefield, yeh that might sound dorky but that's how I see it. And also I'm going to get the game soon and I hope that there will be lot's of people to play with! :D I would actually like to get War of the vikings but nah, F2P ftw, and yeh I'm cheap ;)
And there comes the main issue: what type of melee combat is good melee combat? Personally, I don't see how a good melee combat system can go without non-auto blocking -- and the first game I know to feature that in an action game is M&B. I enjoyed that game a lot, 800+ hours on steam says something -- but for those who want a more realistic experience, melee combat must be slower paced, which is what WotR is trying to do -- and I personally enjoyed that too.
Squad-spawning does totally suck. They need to add perma-death/hardcore type matches too, so that you can end up with a last man standing sort of situation.
Combat is so damn floaty you move at the same near constant speed when spamming away with a melee weapon, animations are awkward, and there is no footwork required because no thought was put into that aspect. MnB is still the perfect incarnation of melee combat.
Horse Archery: Why the mongols were able to create history's largest empire. It is overwhelmingly powerful and leaving it out for game balance reasons is entirely practical.
Mouse sweeping is just one way to play the game - you can turn it off in options on mtb (it's more about pointing rather than sweeping - sweeping would get annoying, imo).
Honestly, I would just recommend M&B. It has a (imo) great campaign, and you can mod the hell out of it. The visuals are of far lesser quality, and the combat may not be *quite* as good, but it's also 2x cheaper. Plus the Napoleonic Wars expansion is AWESOME.
they can make an objective rush! like you need to defend your village, after you lost you go defending another village ... like Rush mode in BF3, and make a Castle defence
Yeap, got a refund, because I am lagging a lot now and it's no fun after all going pub stomping for 1 whole day and only have 2 gamemodes out, it gets boring being on the top of the scoreboards as well. I'm going to be making a Let's Play on Dishonored. Can't wait for that game to come out! BIG fan of Arkane Studio :) And I'm waiting for M&B 2 to be released as well. I'm not too keen with Chivalry. CHEERS!
"We reported recently that Paradox has created a permanent team to produce ongoing content for War of the Roses. We're just now getting some info on what that's going to look like. Before the end of the year we can expect seven new weapons, new armor options including Knights Hospitaller plate, and even some new maps and game modes." HORRAY PARADOX!!
I think my main complaint would indeed be the melee swings. Just doesn't seem fluid/realistic. Also, the entire advantage of spears/halberds (range) is pointless when people don't fear death/ it takes more than 1-3 hits to kill someone.
what i find hilarious is that TB doesn't like playing that type of archer (i forget the name so forgive me), yet he got the largest killstreak and longest amount of time alive as that particular archer
It'd be even more realistic if they included stamina and the ability to swing faster if you want (costs stamina; just an idea - another could be that swinging fast makes it easy for you to get flanked or does less damage or is only feasable with certain weapons; it's just for people that are click happy).
Its nice to see superhumans watching youtube videos. I would reference medical journals for us normal humans, but you might try to melt me with your laser vision.
It has loads of customization but it's missing some of the most important type of customization to me: Aesthetics. You can't change what your character looks like. You can't be a female character. So any sort of roleplay you want to do you can't. You can't invest anything into the actual character your playing as, making this just a mindless medieval "run at the other guy and see whos weapon does more damage quicker" sim.
21:35 "I used to be an adventure like you, but then I took an arrow TO THE BLOODY CROTCH. Then I swore vengeance on TotalBiscuit and became Darth Dickless." Did I do the meme right?
I was really hoping that they were going to impliment a castle seige gameplay mechanic. Team A tries to over take Team B's castle. I think it would have been a lot of fun.
Let's all not forget how stabbing is the only effective method in actually dealing damage in this game. All while your opponent skull fucks you with his Scottish Greatsword.
Horse archery isn't a very European thing. Very asian style of combat. there used to be english bowmen mounted on horses, but they did not actually shoot from the horses, they used it for transportation on caqmpaign and on the battlefield and to transport equipment and loot though.
RIP my man. With the new season playlists, it seems a good time for a Feb 2019 marathon.

21:50 "stabby stabby yess mmmm very nice very nice" i have no idea why, but i want that as my ringtone
You can google search for instructions on how to do just that. It's a bit of a pain but I've done it.
panda like video panda no kill biscuit
"Lances to the face, now that feels GREAT!"
TotalBiscuit 2012...
24:08 I agree. The game does look grape.
Great, lol.
In the last two minutes, the aesthetics simply amazed me. During combat, flaming arrows over the battlements... Nice!
Justin Bieber is a badass, apparently.
Also, one thing he doesn't touch on (and perhaps it wasn't in the game when he reviewed it) is blocking/parrying. If you have a shield, you hold block and hold up the shield, pretty straightforward.

in warband you can kill multiple opponents at once
Uhm no you cant, unless your using one odd mod, ive been playing it for 4 years now and that is not possible in warband.
Juan David well i've done it, multiple times
Juan David you can but it takes serious luck and weird swings
its not really somethingthat you can make a tactic out off
brawlybullet You can't... The game is rigged to only do damage 1 time with 1 attack. A swing/stab/throw of a weapon is 1 attack. What you saw was something else. Like riding over 1 person knocking him unconscious while finishing off another with your weapon, or similar.

holly fuck this game is cool! AND FREE!!!!
Yeah, hardly.
Street Lamp
hardly free or cool?
Thomathan Both
Emanuelen2 Agreed
Thomathan Hardly free, the free version doesn't have an awful lot. It is cool though.
I am very happy that totalbiscuit REALLY emphasized his hatred of the squad spawn mechanic. Totally ruins moments where you are beating down a dude and suddenly find yourself surrounded in a empty field by three fresh enemies who spawned.
I wonder what happend when i press Reset .. i know it will reset but will it give me my gold back ?
Just picked this up and I find it fantastic. I was originally put off by the kill streaks and other such nonsense but now I love it as it makes the game truly hilarious. A defend the castle gamemode would be pretty cool having one team inside the castle defending it and the other trying to take it over

TB puts a crossbow on a heavy archer although knowing well that he has a crossbow class, silly TB
i just played this game today i have played 1 match so far..... i already love this game, this is by far the best game i have played, i look foward to playing with all of you.
This is the best multiplayer game i've ever played. So in depth and clean. Looks amazing as well.

Man I would love a WTF old series, purely for the selfish reasons of seeing TB playing the nostalgic games of the past :-)
I love how TB praises the dreary, rainy weather effects in the game, saying "you can't really complain about that, it's beautiful", and in one of his recent videos talks about how the weather in England is absolutely dreadful for the same reasons XD

He is currently working on a comparison video between the two, stated in a mailbox episode :)
armor piercing is soooo good in war of the roses since nearly everyone uses heavy archer (unless they're archers)
Leg? You hit that guy in the crotch!
I got Chivalry for free, but his looks better. How does it compare gameplay-wise? I'll check out the comparison vid.
I agree on "Conquest" games. I only play Rush in Battlefield.
Hey TB, for the attachment parts of the bow, you can have the double quiver and the other one at the same time. It's worth it.
"Lances to the face, now that feels great. There's no doubt about that." - TotalBiscuit.
"Lances into the face. Now THAT feels GREAT!"
Hahaha! Out of context quote of the year.
it's free to play now, also just fyi in future, UK doesn't get screwed the most, Australia does.

First time i've seen the mace execution. Amazing!
i would like this to have first person as an option and have castle sieges as a game mode where you actually get to use battering rams and catapaults
A good idea for the "Objective" Mode, they should research certain events in the War of the Roses and make some events into objective based games
I think it's about time for some mods or an in game addition that adds 128 player sieges
And there comes the main issue: what type of melee combat is good melee combat?
Personally, I don't see how a good melee combat system can go without non-auto blocking -- and the first game I know to feature that in an action game is M&B.

Squad-spawning does totally suck. They need to add perma-death/hardcore type matches too, so that you can end up with a last man standing sort of situation.
Who knows, there's always a chance that updates will add extra game modes, weapons, perks, ect.

Eastern weapons DLC would be great for this game. Though I can understand that people wouldn't like it due to the setting of this game
Horse Archery: Why the mongols were able to create history's largest empire. It is overwhelmingly powerful and leaving it out for game balance reasons is entirely practical.
@Michael Hojenski Well... People in both those groups also had access to original CS and DotA1 so the comparison doesn't exactly hold...
Yeah, that's what I meant. I however thought you were going to say the same thing as bluedeath instead of making a sane, reasonable statement.
Mouse sweeping is just one way to play the game - you can turn it off in options on mtb (it's more about pointing rather than sweeping - sweeping would get annoying, imo).
I feel that you didn't focus on counter attacks; the "floaty" is the balance and speed of weapons.
"Lances to the face... now that feels great" -TB 10/10 lmao
The top scorer in the first round TB played was named Justin Beiber. He used his voice to get his awesome kd.
You can only edit the custom classes, you get the first one at lvl 4 if I recall correctly.
CHEERS!
He is. Watch his mailboxes. Also, he said he's going to do a comparison video soon.
Quick tip: you can choose whichside you want to attack from
"We reported recently that Paradox has created a permanent team to produce ongoing content for War of the Roses. We're just now getting some info on what that's going to look like. Before the end of the year we can expect seven new weapons, new armor options including Knights Hospitaller plate, and even some new maps and game modes."
HORRAY PARADOX!!
You can get it on Humble Bundle ^^
It'd be even more realistic if they included stamina and the ability to swing faster if you want (costs stamina; just an idea - another could be that swinging fast makes it easy for you to get flanked or does less damage or is only feasable with certain weapons; it's just for people that are click happy).
Its nice to see superhumans watching youtube videos. I would reference medical journals for us normal humans, but you might try to melt me with your laser vision.
This is actually fantastic. Whenever I played mount and blade I felt like I had bought one big beta
I'm from Lancaster county and the next county over is York. Which are the teams in the game.
21:35 "I used to be an adventure like you, but then I took an arrow TO THE BLOODY CROTCH. Then I swore vengeance on TotalBiscuit and became Darth Dickless."
Did I do the meme right?
I was really hoping that they were going to impliment a castle seige gameplay mechanic. Team A tries to over take Team B's castle. I think it would have been a lot of fun.
Let's all not forget how stabbing is the only effective method in actually dealing damage in this game. All while your opponent skull fucks you with his Scottish Greatsword.
remember this is not trying to be mount and blade just its combat system so you could always get both
"On to the negatives, I think the archery... is wonderful."
