  • This marks a momentous occasion for us. We finally take the big left turn and enter the big blue. It doesn't get much more real that the northern Pacific Ocean. We spend 7 days out at sea, destination San Francisco. Usually I try and make my videos shorter, but I really wanted YOU, the viewer, to get a real understanding for what it is like 100 miles off shore. This was a wild ride, one I will never forget.

    My son has a islander 41 ft he says it's the best boat he's ever owned so it's not real fast with the full kill but it is smooth

    Thanks for sharing the highs and challenges of the trip. Really enjoyed your footage. Re the sea sickness....try the pressure point bands that slip over the wrist area, they really help my wife and don't cause the drowsy effect of medication.

    Thanks for taking the time to film and edit the trip. Offshore on the west coast can be rough.

      I appreciate your comment. The video shows I wasn't doing all that well, and there were times that I had to force myself to pick up that camera. Thanks for checking out my vid. I hope at least I could show some realism on how it can really be out there.

      Hi David! It still amazes me that I'm actually doing it. I still remember all my talk at work, telling everyone I'll be quitting my job so I can go sail the world. Well, here I am, on my boat, in
      Santa Barbara:) Cheers my friend, I hope you can soon be doing what YOU want to do!

    Dave young you should not judge until you walk a mile in their shoes. I though it was a Awesome video. He was keeping it real.

    Looks like you had it just as rough as us. We stayed around 80 miles, my insurance wouldn't cover more than 100. Beware of the oil spill over here, I spent the night in Dana point only to wake up trapped, they closed the harbor off with those floating oil barriers and there's no in or out until further notice.

    • @svstellaj1530
      @svstellaj1530  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been listening to the constant VHF warnings about the spill. So sorry to hear you became trapped! We've made it to Catalina Island and plan to head to San Diego from Avalon. Hopefully they can get the spill cleaned up quickly!

    Great video. Realistic experience with tough sea state. Loved seeing the boat fly. What was experience with IP In light winds?

    • @svstellaj1530
      @svstellaj1530  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything 10kts and above we can sail on but if the wind dies down below that, the spinnaker does a good job of utilizing the lighter winds, if your reaching or heading down wind that is. We just finished a sail with 11kts behind us and only had the jib out, we averaged 4kts SOG, good enough to just sit back and relax :)

    2.5 knots at the start of a 7 day passage?! That's the definition of brutal!

    • @svstellaj1530
      @svstellaj1530  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Haha, one guy on the boat was sure something was going wrong, "this can't be right!" he kept screaming! lol.
      Did you do much better out of the Straight?

    • @CruisingMaya
      @CruisingMaya 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@svstellaj1530 we spent two nights in Port Angeles waiting for those winds to die down, although we probably averaged 4 knots or so. Long stretch out to the coast!

    Great boat sorta kinda. You need to stop with all the negatively and enjoy or buy a darn motor home or give the Mike to the wife 🤔

      He wasn’t being negative. He was explaining how he was feeling. Being sick and skippering a boat offshore is not as easy as one might think. How are the maggots doing?

      Definitely didn't see it as negative at all... it was refreshing to see an honest perspective of the challenges and the sea conditions. So many channels only show the perfect beaches and the glamourous side of sailing. This video was great to show how things can really be out there.
