I feel your pain on losing your Nana-I lost mine about 5 years ago and I miss her all the time. I have such good memories when I use some of the items I kept when she passed. She was a firecracker, had the most amazing giggle. I lost my dad several years ago to cancer and each one I lose takes a piece of my heart. My dad and I inspired each other with our homesteading dreams and I can still picture him on his tractor doing homesteading chores. But as I continue this journey-I know he is in heaven smiling down at me saying "you go girl!"

Sweetheart, I totally get it. I am my family’s space cadet. I love exploring, learning, reading all about how my grandparents came here from Italy, bought an apricot ranch and had a homestead. Somehow, all of that knowledge skipped my parents’ generation and I picked up where my grandparents left off. My family thinks I’m a little “off”, and that’s ok.
I’m also the one in my family who stopped going to church and still maintained a relationship with the Lord. I’m the one who is preparing and who is more in touch with the word of God than they are. They all think I’m nuts. And I could care less.
So you just keep dreaming, visualizing that dream and doing the things that fill your heart with joy. Bless you🙏

Thank you for being you! Your passion and drive has inspired me to look at my apartment kitchen in a new way. 10 years ago I was that farm girl, I had an acre of garden that flourished, I canned, ground my own flour, and fermented. Every meal was made from scratch and most of our food was home grown or wild harvested, then I got divorced and moved into a city apartment, started school and refreshed my life in so many ways. Then one day I came across this beautiful soul on TH-cam who said store bought canned tomatoes are a place to start when we are in limited spaces. She said it with joy, enthusiasm and logic. My brain went...wait! My perfectionist brain is holding me back from following my passions. So, thank you for being you and thank you for sharing your transformation journey with me!

Just found your channel this morning, and I am going through watching your video's. What a tribute to you Grandmother, I could see the love you have for her! I just love the quilts and crochet she made! Beautiful Treasures! Don't laugh, but I am just as sentimental as you are, of all the sweet little things I have from my grandparents a rusty bent nail from the boards of their old house and a plain old rock from their drive way are the two things I treasure the most!

My heart goes out to you, Cass, for the loss of your Gramma. My last 2 decades have been a series of losses, even of my self due to a traumatic brain injury.
The things you shared and are doing to honor your Gramma are the things that will keep her alive and real to you.
The life you are living now in preparation for your homestead are actually great training for you. I have been off the grid for
essentially 22 years, and I am still learning. I am going to be getting into the next level in '23, and I am thrilled to find you, as I will be studying your channel for some stuff, as well.
Here's knowing our walks with God will take us higher and farther than we even dreamed.
    God bless you!

My mom was a garment sewer. My paternal grandmother was a quilter. Often the quilts in our home were patchworks of clothes my mom had made along with things we had outgrown. We used to sit in bed at night and pick out our favorite dress fabrics. Thanks for reminding me of that !

    • @BecomingaFarmGirl
      @BecomingaFarmGirl  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Joanne! What a lovely memory, and tangible token from both your mother and grandmother. I most certainly think this quilts are even more special precisely because they are fabrics that had “lived” experiences from her home and my aunts and uncles. Like you, I think “patchwork quilts” store so much meaning! Thank you for sharing!

Hi Cassandra. I’m so sorry for your loss. I’m 72 years old. I lost my Grandma Pearl 30 years ago this month. Not a day goes by that I don’t think of her and miss her and wish she was still here. I cannot wait until we are together again. The pain of life without her doesn’t get any less, but in many many ways, she is still always with me. I’m so sorry for your loss and I so identify with you about your Nana. But Grandma Pearl would not like it if I were to dwell on the sadness and forget the Joy of this life. When people say things like “she will always be a part of you”, I don’t know if they understand the depth of the meaning of that phrase. In reflective moments like this, I can literally feel my Grandma in my heart. Literally. I just discovered your videos and your blog and I enjoy you and your content so much. I look at you as one of the True Pioneers of The New Earth that your generation is creating. Your Nana I know will be watching you and loving you with so much pride. And yes, she WILL always be a part of you. So much love to you Cassandra.

I lost my mother last year. I'm old and it's a loss at any age. Taking care of her for her last year I had to travel to distract myself from spending every day with her. It helped with the transition.
Just know the Bible says people sleep until Christ returns. It also says a person can go anywhere after death that they left body fluids in life. So she can visit you anytime if she's ever been to your place and used your bathroom. Lol
She left so much of her heart and wisdom with you. Just know Love and souls Never die. Her Love is with you forever.

Love what you said about not waiting until you have a ton of land to grow food and learn preservation techniques. If you have been working on your skills in order, you’ll be able to do so much, and get right to enjoying your properties and realizing your vision. You’re also more likely to build a garden space that does what you need if you have a better idea of which plants need what. Can’t really get that without some experience.

I know that the loss of your Nana is so incredibly hard and painful. Nothing I or anyone else can say will take away that loss and pain. Yes, she is with our Lord and Savior. Please write all the memories that you have of your Nana, including her sayings and expressions, down. Add your pictures, too . These memories should never, nor will, they be forgotten. Your memories will be active reminders of a wonderful and blessed life. She must have been the most loving and caring and talented woman. You have been and continue to be blessed because of the love she obviously had for you and you for her. She clearly was so talented, and you got that gene for sure. You are blessed, so blessed.

I’m so sorry. I really do know how you feel. I lost my little brother (Glioblastoma) and my dad six months apart. I lost my mom a couple years ago. I’ve had such a hard time. I feel very much like you. Hugs to you. You’re not weird at all. My family pressed their roses in their Bible. I’m a quilter. I absolutely love scrap quilts! I love all kinds but there is something so special about the scrap quilts. Especially from loved ones cloths. I’m actually making a scrap quilt with everyone’s clothes. It has been so therapeutic along with my seedlings. Your grandmothers quilts are so precious. I’m near the Jersey Shore. Cherish your memories with your Nana on the Eeastern shore. Remember that they’re definitely all still with us 💗 thank you for everything. I love my canning journal 💗💗💗 Spoil yourself and take care. That’s very interesting about the linen. Reminds me of my own great grandmother who we always took her clothes that were past handing down to others . She would take them and make the patchwork quilts. Awesome video, as always! I love your focus, tenacity, adaptability, and "realness"- you don't despise humble beginnings and you take such joy in your accomplishments, and you should because you are crushin' it! At the risk of sounding like your mother:"I'm SO PROUD of you, dear"!!
In terms of feedback, I love your gardening clips, but your unique canning recipes and your ease in front of the camera are real strengths. You really connect with your audience:your story would make such a great HGTV type reality show!
Keep trusting your pace & process and keep flourishing (that's the word the Lord spoke to me about you when I was watching this video- so flourish, flourish, FLOURISH in Jesus' name). This is going to be a great year for you-just keep going... it's all coming together. It's a living testimony to others to see someone pursuing their dreams in spite of all that's going on around us. You have some interesting and well rounded future goals- just go for it! We all look forward to watching.

Pearl! I have been staring at your comment for the last 5 minutes wondering how to even reply! I do especially enjoy canning, it's my happy place--those videos and recipes will remain a staple feature of what I share. Tragically, canning (and food preservation in general) remains misunderstood and underutilized when it is (in my humble opinion) the ANSWER to stretching your dollars at the grocery store, reducing packaging waste, supporting local farmers, eating healthier and man...I'm finally cooking from scratch meals without loosing my mind (or lots of time). Canning has to make a comeback!
Talking in front of the camera has definitely felt more natural as I see repeated names on my videos. I know that the Lord will bring things to pass in his timing but in all things I will remain content (Philippians 4:12) , and until such time as I have exhausted my little 'stead in the city, I'll be fitting in my farm dream in the "in betweens" and happy to meet friends like you that are genuine. I receive the word "flourish" for this year ! Thank you so much, Pearl! Blessings to you and yours in the coming year! xoxo Cassandra

Ahhhh. I think I've only been watching and listening to you today and I'm so glad I found your channel! Your dreams aren't just fairy tales. I can see in only 1 day that you are unstoppable! You have this farm girl way of life in your heart and you don't mind doing the work or research needed to achieve. I have 100% faith that you and your husband will be there soon! I can't imagine the people who think you're strange for doing some of these things.... especially now. We've all seen the writing on the wall. We (me absolutely) should have been paying attention to our parents and grandparents when they tried to teach the things you talk about! Instead, I probably rolled my eyes and wished they'd stop talking. Ugh. I could shake that kid version of me for thinking anything was more important. Now, I'm soaking up as much as I'm able to put in my head. I'm trying to teach my 20 something age daughters so that the art doesn't die or teach them how to be self sufficient if there isn't a grocery store to shop at. I, for the most part, get the same eye rolls I dished out when I was young. But again, they been raised to be hard workers and to not ever be entitled BUT they've also been raised to expect grocery deliveries or door dash. 🤔 it's not going to be overnight that we (my generation) repair the false security we've instilled in our kids. You are a hundred steps ahead of the door dads crowd and I, for one, can't wait to learn more from you! Thank you for sharing all of this!

I’m admiring your transparency and the things that bring you Joy! I’ve lived on our homestead l, and I use that term loosely, for 10 years. We raise a small flock of chickens for their eggs and love them! I’ve had a large garden, a small garden and currently no garden. However, you have so inspired me to get out my canner and learn to use it! Then just last weekend I was gifted with my sweet Aunt Helen’s 1971 Presto canner as well! Hubby is going to create an outdoor canning space for me under the cover of our new carport. I’m so excited as canning on our smooth top electric stove is a challenge to keep the temps and pressure where I need them! I lost my grandmothers in my late teens and my mother when I was 31 with 3 young kiddos so I missed out on a lot of that female influence in my kitchen as an adult (I’m nearing 62) but TH-cam has become my classroom! People like you who pour their heart into their content for people like me are such a blessing of the Lord! Please keep going! Please continue to share your story, your testimony and your infectious JOY! ❤🎉

Then a bit later I hear you giggle sweetly at the promise of your healthy providing pantry. Kind, sweet girl. You are precious. Grandma (may she rest in peace) is definitely proud of you. Sending you tight hugs from New York.

Hello Marina! Your virtual hug warmed my heart this afternoon after work. I miss both of my grandmothers so much, but loosing my Nana last year still feels incredibly fresh. This video and my pantry tour are two of the most raw videos I've shared here on the channel. I am thankful that I have been met with incredibly kindness here on youtube which gave me the guts to be a bit vulnerable. I do not take your kindness for granted. Sending you love, right back, from Maryland! Here's my pantry tour: th-cam.com/video/k2XsbxgHmAI/w-d-xo.html

Hello Sylvia! Please accept my apologies in replying to you so late. I am in tears reading your sweet, sweet message. I continue to miss my nana terribly, but all of what you shared is what keeps me going. I plan to visit her resting spot later this spring bring her flowers and picnic with her as we used to. I cannot imagine the sadness of loosing your granddaughter. The great hope of heaven at the end of this life is such a comfort. I am so happy to pass along what I have learned (as well as learn from other farm girls here on the channel). Finally being able to meet others, even in an online space, has blessed my heart so much. I love your mindset!! And bless your heart loosing your Nana. I'm so sorry. I'm Nana to almost 14 grands and it's the best. All I have left is one brother and one aunt, BUT, I have 4 daughters, 4 sil's and all my grandbabies! God is good!! I live in NE TX on 2 acres and have been gardening for a few years. It's hard on my body but I love it so very much! I didn't start "homesteading" until my late 50's and admire so much all of you young folks getting into it at a much younger age. Y'all are so wise! So much I want to do and I try. I have some support but not like all in support. My husband's always saying, "if we were in our 30's, we could do this or that". And I'm always like, I can do it, I know I can! lol I don't watch any tv, just youtubers that garden and preserve and farm. You are such an inspiration to me! Your goals this year are exactly what some of my goals are, like the apothecary. I'm growing a lot of the flowers and herbs that will be needed to make home remedies. I read every book I can get my hands on to learn. Anyway, I'll stop rambling so I can watch some more of your vlogs. I've got chickens and meat rabbits I need to tend to soon. Love and blessings to you!

In many ways, I feel that I am on a similar path and hearing your story ENCOURAGES MY HEART SO MUCH, dear friend! Thank you for sharing!

Let me first say I am so happy to see you posting again. I have so missed your videos. I am just now getting caught up on everything that I've ever subscribed to in the homestead community. The years just been crazy. My sincerest sympathy for your loss, March 14th will be 3-year point for passing of my Grams. So I totally get how you feel, she was my best friend especially through my high school years. But again I am so happy to see your goals going forward and it's motivating me to actually sit and contemplate those things. I need to be more deliberate and intentional with our plans. Because most of our homestead journey has been well this sounds good at the moment so let's do that. And I need to quit being as such. I'm so glad that you brought up community reliance and sufficiency because that is one of the things that is my end goal. Again I'm getting caught up on all your new stuff I'm so excited. I'll be commenting on something else soon.

Sorry to hear about your grandma. Very sad for you.
As to all your plans, you don’t have to do things perfectly. Part of resilience( which is what I think you are looking for rather than self sufficiency) is to make the mistakes, weather them easily and learn. So, go get those quails! You’ll do just fine. Maybe reach out to a rural vet for some guidance also.
Id love to see videos where you talk about and share your farm goals more specifically and how your current activities will help achieve those specific goals. Your realization about the pots and learning how to be more efficient even here and now was great!

Hi SmallTown Homestead! So good to see you! And, thank you for the condolences-the word, “resilience” aptly captures not only the last few weeks but a quality anyone on this journey needs, thank you!
I am certainly remaining optimistic about getting my quail, thanks of course to your recommendation. I was so close and I know another door will open. I also appreciate your recommendation and the thought popped up that I could perhaps share quarterly or so “progress updates” where I tease out this discussion in a condensed form.
Blessings to you and yours in the coming year! I’d love to know how things are progressing on your homestead?!! 😀

    Hi from the Scottish Highlands.
I trained as a chef.. Water bath /Steam canning/ and pressure canning was not a part of the food preservation method being taught.. I needed convincing for sure!! Having purchased 2 all American canners and 2 steam canners I have found the cooking pot for steam canning is more versatile and works well. The all American canner is a work horse for sure and saves time in the long run as a result of large batch canning.. Even as a BLOKE it is heavy for sure and as a result the all American cracked my infrared cooking plate!!.. Kindness your way.. Lochness Scottish Highlands..

Pray for this heat wave, some folks are out of power during this time, and pray for us to gain strength from each other. I know what its like to have someone pass away. You will get to see them again since they are with the Lord. You showed me a few things in a video over making stuff with leftovers, and things we would normally throw out as trash. I started a farm, but well my family stopped supporting that without saying anything. So as we go, I became diabetic, and they don't want to learn about that either, so I am on my own with the farming so I can maintain my sugars. They eat what I cannot, so I can only cook for myself and then they complain about that, but then I told them its diabetic foods. They won't eat it. Its kinda crazy but hey, I get it. I bet you miss your granny very much. Im so sorry for your loss. You have some good memories however, and the cooking you did in the last video, awesome cooking recipes you said were from your granny. You sure make people feel welcome at home on this video. You keep making great videos and I know you are going to make it through. KEEP IT UP! Jesus Loves you!

Totally, Amy. It’s not my goal to do it all; that would be overwhelming for sure. In many ways I’m comforted by the fact that we still have many years in our current home because I can continue to move at a pace that fits in with the rest of my life (working, school, family) and still feel that over time I’m making accomplishments (canning, fermenting, growing from seed, tending a small garden) and that, when the time is right, my small little farm with chickens, a cow, a few lambs and an in ground garden will come to pass. Same for you too!!

Dear friend, my heart goes out to you on the unexpected loss of your dad. Most days it can feel like walking through cement. In real life I’d be the friend to just sit with you, even in silence, because sometimes there are no words. I have very much been comforted by displaying my grandmothers items. It doesn’t make them seem so far away and keeps their presence in a very real way in my home. I encourage you to do the same with special keepsakes of your dad’s. Learning to live with loss is challenging, be gentle on yourself. May the special memories you shared with your dad be a comfort to you now and in the days ahead, dear friend!

@@BecomingaFarmGirl thank you sis same to you! And yes I certainly have been adding things that remind me of him to my home. Bittersweet it is but I am glad I have them.
      Kind Regards

Oh, I am so excited to see your organizational progress. I am downsizing from a 3000 sq ft home to a 1000 sq ft home and need all kinds of help. We are living in an interim place as we remodel where we will be landing so I've already done a lot of purging. I just want ideas to help make things as functional as possible. We are in the "pre-retirement" phase of life. I adore your "things you love" and energy. thanks for all you share.

Hi Sonia! Wow, that is certainly a big adjustment. Luckily, you have an interim place which will give you some time to think through certain features, equipment, design that are necessary components vs ones that really won't give you a bang for your buck. Things like using my walls to hang things I actually use has become a great way to open up cabinet space, turning my downstairs under-the-steps area into a larger pantry, and some of the storage built-ins that were already in our home when we moved in have helped me feel like theres still a lot I can "squeeze" in a small space. Keep me posted! Enjoy your weekend!

Just tried your freezing a meal in the silicone bags an hour ago. Bought the bags yesterday and made my lentil meal to put in there and now it's ready to serve, etc. Thank you (My friend said how expensive the bags were and I told her just what you said in your video about earning it back and no waste...).

I love this Fran! And yes, it’s an upfront investment but truly once you have them they last for years (someone I know has had theirs for 15 years) and as the rising price of plastic consumables goes up you really will be saving. Lentil soup sounds amazing! Happy New Year!

Maybe some day I will let you privately see my cellar…. I keep telling myself it’s not going to be in the public eye! This video makes me wanna pick up the phone and share with you how we have the same background when it comes to grandmas… my grands were all past when I graduated from high school and it’s been 25 years and I still miss my Grammie. My husband was born in Havre De Grace, MD so I know about Maryland crabs! I love cooking from canned food!

LeAnne! It’s a small world! I can’t wait to visit your farm🥰 (I’m 100% serious 🧐 since were only a stones throw away from each other) Not having my nana to visit still makes me choke up and I reckon, like you, it always will and that’s ok. It makes the thrill of the coming kingdom only sweeter. Oh-I’ll definitely bring some MD crabs 🦀 when I see you!
