About the preparedness; I cannot stress this enough. Have a plan. We live in Florida, and got hit by a cat 5 on 10/10/18. We should have left; we did not. We had no power for 2 weeks (and then we finally evacuated), no cell phones had signal, there was no way of communicating with the outside world, and worse of all: 2 weeks with no shelter, in extreme Florida heat. (No a/c in Florida is akin to a living hell, quite literally. Imagine the oven door open, and it just doesn't shut) have a plan for extreme weather wherever you are. First plan should always be Pray; but also be prepared for anything because being fed by the red cross and the cajun navy for 2 weeks humbles you in ways you cannot imagine. Now- imagine a global catastrophe and there is no red cross. We have to all prepare for that scenario too.

I have a 350 year old house and they layed the barn out right behind the house and the cellar too . We can get over a meter deep snow and they kept the animals on the second floor of the barn over winter with a bridge to the pasture, which is a South facing slope. The chicken stall is 5 meters from the door. When we get deep snow we can always get to the cellar and animals easy enough

With several families living on this farm we operate more like a commercial farm. We have power that is produced by water, wind and Solar panels, we have 2 greenhouses a large garden and orchard and 2 chicken houses one for laying hens the other for food are all in a high fenced area to keep out predators. The small Herd of highland cows that are moved around in 3 pastures with the Bull kept to himself in a separate pasture. 2 mix breed milk cows keep in a different location. And I haven’t even talked about the bees or the wood shop. Got to get off here and go work on some equipment. Oh one more thing, I have not be off the farm sense April when I went to see my Doctor for my annual check up.

When all the disruptions hit in 2020 we were able to go more than a month without going to the grocery store. I was raised to keep food stocked up and my husband was raised to keep fuel and feed stocked. We had a newborn and thanks to cloth diapers and nursing we didn't have to worry about that either. We have increased our preparedness significantly since then.

@@cayadavis8099 no I don’t adhere to a strict schedule. I have technically 5 school age kids with one the 6th little you would consider a preschooler. The preschooler he learns basics like Colors, shapes etc. We are working on writing his name but he just traces the alphabet and his name for now. Now the other 5 there are days I don’t get schooling for all of them done everyday. Most days I get my 3 youngest school work done and we work on what they are behind on etc. then my teenagers twins work on their work what they can while I do the younger three and then the next day I reverse it. We don’t have a strict schedule like school no. If you have just 2-3 kiddos it’s not as difficult to get so many done. But it’s so worth it. They have changes so much somethings they need more work on but I would do it again in a heartbeat. There are groups etc you can join in your area to meet other parents and homeschool kids. We do have off days if they get all their work done. Pick their own field trip and more when we can take them. Hope this helps. 🙂 and thanks for subscribing.

I have a large tomato that I save seeds from every year, the best of the best.I don't have a name, the original seeds were gifted to me from a fellow farmer, but they are a meaty beef steak type. They have adapted to my micro climate and homestead, they ripen earlier , and get better each year, Just a thought about saving and developing your own tomato varieties for your homestead.

I think Texas is zones 7-10, and that can be a big difference. That being said, my tomatoes did badly this year also and I am really glad I still have some put up from last year when they did great. My fall garden is already mostly in. Turnips, carrots, leafy greens (spinach, lettuce, kale), broccoli, leeks, garlic, onions, dill, parsley... my bell peppers are still going and some of my indeterminate tomatoes are trying again. It will depend on when we get a frost this year if they pull it off or not. I was just going to plant cover crop in that raised bed anyway, so I am giving them a shot. I am on the border of 8b/9a though and our 1st frost date is around Thanksgiving.

Purchasing Good Soil isn't always good soil for specific plants. Get your soil tested by your State's Extension Service, their number is in the Phone Book (if you're old-fashion) or google. Your taxes pay for their existence. Use them and follow their advise, it's a good branch of the USA Government.

I don't like the clothing change with just the two of us, let alone for 12! It's on my list for this week, too. Oy.
Feels like it's going to be a long, cold winter, yes. I hope sends enough snow to cover the land and the crowns of the perennials before it temperature plummets.
Even with brand-new property, "zoning" is not easily planned. What works on paper may not work in reality. On our property, not only are the outbuildings in awkward spots, the land slopes, the soil is clay, and the septic field is in the best growing area. We've been working it out.
Terrific pantry chat. Food for thought.

You might want to dehydrate your Greens for Winter nutrition. A tablespoon or two added to soups, stews or casseroles will up your Vitamin intake during off-season growing times. I crumble some Greens into Flakes, some into Lumpy Powder and other Greens into a Fine Powder. I often make blends of Parsley, Kale, Cabbage & Beet Leaves. So far, the family is alive, healthy and none the wiser to eating "yucky" Greens.

One thing we are finding as we develop our property is my zone one and my husband's zone one are very different. For me, my zone one is garden, chickens and eventually milk animals, for him it's shop area and meat animal pens, simply because that's how we tend to break up chores, so for us, my zone one is in front of the house, wrapping one side, while his goes across the back yard.

Love your advice, keep making these videos. My husbands dream is to get a house with land. Right now we have a townhouse in the city, but it is 1600 square feet. We have a small garden but we get a lot of veggies and herbs from it. My husband is going to plant garlic this weekend.

We didn't know about zones when we started out. Unfortunately, our .7 acres is mostly wooded with the house in the middle in the front by the road. The only two sunny spots for gardening are at the far edges of the yard on either side of the house. The important thing is to do the best with what you have. Many of the food plants are wild foods like creasies, mustards, chickweed, and dandelion although we also have root vegetables in and regular greens for baby greens over winter and spring. We already live more like mountain people than prairie/farm folks, so we're aiming the land to work for us that way, taking advantage of the wooded areas for berry bushes, nut trees, ramps, etc. We did get a few dozen eggs from our 4 chickens stored away in the lime as you showed, and we'll start that earlier next spring to have plenty next winter. There's also no shortage of squirrels if things get bad. But you are right, people do need to think through how to have light, heat, food, and water if there's a disruption in services.

Carolyn, you crack me up re clothes exchange--you can see the dread in your face. 😆 Oh, here in SE Idaho, we had 4" snow at my house 2 days ago. Loved it! Although our circumstances aren't exactly like yours (my elevation 4800 feet; 88-90 days growing season; and I believe you're at 1800 elev +/- (yes? no?) but much further north), often your gardening experiences/choices/decisions are very relevant to my area. So, I enjoy your channel very much. In fact, I intend to try those early tomato varieties Carolyn recommended. And, Josh, a generator and snowblower are on our purchase list for the coming year. Thanks to you both for the quality content.

My youngest is 21 now, glad I don’t have to do it. Those two days and having to take a child to the dmv for a drivers test. I never have to do that again and I’m thrilled.

Just wish we could be in Kamiah this year but its okay...So you guys can show me what I am missing this winter..lol We are in a 5th wheel but build on to it and so plenty of storage. So my question is do you guys have a wood stove to warm the house, We do in ours and we put up 12 cords of woods. And we also have a wood kitchen stove. We have this in case of black outs.
