In hindsight, they should've had the player disable him somehow and bury him in the bunker to leave it up for his return in a future game. Killing him so prematurely always felt like squandered potential to me.

Yeah their on steam, you may want to see it fallout 2 has a mod of some kind to improve performance.
Might sound crazy but fallout 2 ran terribly for me with a pretty up to date PC at the time , 2022. Don’t really know why; the loading screens lagged like crazy.
(Edit- loading screen = the travel map pretty much)
