- On this episode of Drop Ship Banter, one mess of a human being babbles on like a idiot as he tries to figure out if he likes the wonderful, cluster truck that is the Free Worlds League! And why that makes it so special within the BattleTech universe.
I've always loved the FWL because it is a lot like my family. Not overly aggressive to others, always squabbling and fighting among itself, yet let someone from outside the family attack someone, everyone else steps up and (boot stomps) said idiot into compliance. In my youth I've seen this in action. In it's messy diversity, the FWL finds strength as well as constant problems. Most of the member states realize that, while the idea of 'going it alone' sounds great, the end results of such an endeavor will end up with them becoming wards or servants of Steiner, Kurita, or Liao...maybe even Davion.

Your video on the FWL and house marik was one the best I've seen on youtube explaining what makes them so unique and helped me nail down the core aspects of their society! I know is is a bit off topic but if it is alright with you, I really do want to give you and our channel a shout out in my next video!!! You deserve a lot more subs, respect, and views then me. :)
And you are right, the FWL is a family that loves/hates itself some of the time and cause minor issues to grow out of proportion, but it will always stand together against a common foe.
@@frozenfrontwargaming9114 I am honored, sir that you say this as here I've been thinking how much I enjoy your presentation and that you are far more eloquent than I. I have a horrible time pronouncing stuff. I've recently posted House Steiner, though it's a bit longer than the last two Houses. Tomorrow will be Kurita and I'm videotaping Davion tomorrow for next week. It goes without saying that I truly love the BT/MW world with its deep, usually well thought out stories. As I said, I am honored and grateful for your impute and support.
The FWL is my favorite faction because it’s a giant mess.

Ya, I really do wish I covered the Knights of the Inner Sphere more, but they seem to have their own unique story that goes on its own path. I may have to do a full video or include them in another episode in more detail.

Edit: Yeah, why you like the FWL is the reason I like it too. There's an audiobook here in youtube, the Ideal War, and it talks about the formation of the Knights of the Inner Sphere. Thomas Marik will try to say it's different from the Clans. >

Also yes, I really do wish I did not sleep on the FLW as much as I did. They are a great faction! Their lore is truly some on the best I have read in BattleTech in terms of sheer depth and intrigue! I can't wait to look more into them still as well of the Knights of the Inner Sphere.
(Almost) 40 years ago as a little kid with a brand new box set of Battletech I chose House Marik because of the "Cool Eagle" they had as a symbol. Through all the ups and (mostly) downs since that time I've never regretted my decision. (But man...cant we be the heroes at least once?)

The Free Worlds League is a power to be reckoned with again and I doubt they want the IS under clan wolf's thumb and rule. They might be the heroes needed to slay the beast this time! Plus they do have some scores to settle with them. :)

You don't want to be the Heroes in the Battletech universe. The second you think you're the hero (like, say, when Davion forges the Federated Commonwealth and nearly wipes out the evil backstabbing Capellans once and for all and reunites the Inner Sphere to reform a second Star League and spearheads the attack on the clans and were actually making peace with the Kuritans, or when Devlin Stone flips the meta and fashions the Republic of the Sphere - an _actual_ democratic republic with no more feudal nobility), the powers that be paint a big target on them for all the writers to screw them over as much as possible.
Now the Republic is wiped out and the nukin' CLANS have won their crusade to take earth and are now poised to push their messed up, eugenic way of life on EVERYBODY, and New Avalon and NAIS were burned to the ground during the Jihad, and the Fed Suns capital is now in the hands of the Kuritans!

Ya, I really wish there was more content on the FWL as well! They have alot of great story and amazing lore but sadly don't have that flash or shine that other IS states like the Combine or FedSun or the Clans have. Hopefully more people will look more into them and see how interesting they are. :)

This was very interesting. Despite some earlier FedSuns leanings, I'm in the process of building up a Sirian Lancers company (my local group is a bit Davion/Steiner heavy and I wanted to balance it out some). Reading up on them on Sarna, I was a bit confused by some of the unit history (lots of insubordination and even a few rogue operations). It seemed really weird that A) they would do it in the first place and B) would largely get away with it. It makes a LOT more sense now you have explained the differences between Provincial, Federal, and Marik forces. In short, they view themselves as loyal to the Sirian Concordat first, the FWL second, and House Marik a distant third.
That's the kind of detail that makes Battletech so fascinating. :)

Ya, the FWL is incredibly interesting if your looking for a faction in Battletech that literally is a higher stakes games of thrones in their political structure while trying to balance the concept of a republic. There are levels to the loyalty one has in the Free worlds league that are tested. I truly hope they get more love in ilchan moving forward.

As the usual Game Master for a narrative group, the FWL is fantastic. Really opens the door for all manner of shenanigans to happen with different factions having a different take on any given situation, without needing to provide an external "bad guy" like the Capellans to fight.
Hi Frank! Ya, in the RPG game, the Free Worlds League is a great place to have the setting in! They truly are the great gray moral divide, where a party of mechwarriors never really knows weather they are helping or hampering the right/wrong faction. Unless its the Word of Blake, then you know things are about to go down...

Ah. FWL. A hornets nest kicks another hornets nest for a field goal. But its not goal posts. It's more hornets nests. And then guys jump up who think I'm wrong, and its actually bees. Yeah. They come in for a punch up over semantics in metaphors.
But then mister Crabs waddles up with a wad of CBs. 'I like Munney!' And everyone chills out over drinks for five minutes.

Though I would throw into the metaphor some wasps, fire ants and the fact that if anyone DARES to touch their CB's, the collective hives will just explode in a giant wave of winged murder death on the poor saps who thought that was a good idea and leave them in a world of hurt! XD

Maybe I could gone a wee bit longer on the time, but that would mean me going off the rails and flying all other the place! Which I don't think anyone wants! Specially when trying to explain the vast, chaotic depth that is the FWL. XD
Quite exhaustive for you. But, well, your fault if you put your head into the bucket that is the FWL. That comes from someone who fights For The Eagle! since 1987.

Ya, I kind of fell into the pit of the Free Worlds League story/lore preeetty hard. I never thought they had so much depth to them! Tis the fate of a newbie it seems as they join this universe. Nothing in the Inner Sphere is as simple as it seems. XD
Hopefully the FWL gets some more spotlight in ilchan, I really do like them as a faction and they deserve some justice.
@@frozenfrontwargaming9114 Sure you did. Pretty nailed it with the charming of a newbie crawling back, telling: Whoa, you won´t believe what I saw in that rabbit hole. When I first sat on the floor with my mates and the battle maps and the figurines, everyone had to chose a house. I liked the purple eagle and there was not much to know about it from the rules book. But I stick to it. Why would I switch allegiance away from the League? To what? Swiner? Liao lapdog? You kidding? :;-D
Their military would be 2nd!? The only reason they haven't been wiped out is because they had a Capellan Confederation sized buffer between them and Davion and a Lyran Commonwealth AND Rasselhague sized shield wall protecting them from getting steamrolled by house Kurita.
OK ok! That may have been a bit of an exaggeration, I'll admit it Iiljenborg! XD And you are 100 percent correct that the Free Worlds League has the benefit of being in the position of having other states take blows for it.
But I will stand by the fact that I feel that if the FWL had better leadership, it's miltary would be a very lethal threat! And despite its leadership has some of the best soldiers, pilots and mech warriors in the Inner Sphere. :)
@@frozenfrontwargaming9114 The problem with the "If they had better leadership" argument for the FWL is that it pretty much holds for everyone else, too.
If the Lyrans with their massive mech production capacity had better leadership they wouldn't have tripped over their own incompetent, political general's feet every time they went up against Marik (even if the FWL had had better leadership).
If the Fed Suns or Fed Commonwealth had better leadership (instead of traitors like Michael Hassek-Davion or Kat Steiner-Davion) House Liao would have been wiped out by 3038 and the second Star League wouldn't have fallen apart.
If the CLANS had better leadership they wouldn't have walked into Focht's trap at Tukayyid.
If the Taurians had better leadership . . . If the Outworld Alliance had better leadership . . . If the Capellans had better leadership . . .
Okay, that last one doesn't work. If the Capellans had better leadership they would have stopped being Capellans, since Capellans are defined by their belief that duplicity and back-stabbery are the very core of "good leadership".

(I don't agree with you on the whole Capellans bashing bit at the end, but that's alright! XD)
While the FWL certainly uses combined arms, that's not really unique to them. In fact, to most BT fans the FedSuns is the combined arms faction.
Hi Alex, very sorry for the delayed response! Ya, I may have gone a bit to much into the whole FWL being combined arms only when compared to other factions. While they prefer it as there go to, strait forward tactic and train in its use commonly, most other IS states, particularly Confederation and FedSuns use the same tatical deployment if combined arms as well as you pointed out. Sometimes even better! Thank you for the correction! :)

That's the Free Worlds League for you. You can talk about them for hours, know all their workings and about every member of house Marik, and still in the end feel that what you learned didn't help you understand them one bit. XD

I would put FWL about third favorite for at least most sane of the houses.
In terms of "not doing bat s$&% crazy stuff" that's seems like a pretty fair ranking honestly. :)
Though...there is the whole Word of Blake thing...but depending on who you ask I'm not sure it is their fault. =X
