This helped me SO much! Usually, I watch several "How To" videos until I find one that makes sense and is concise. I found this one first, watched it once and then successfully put on a new cable. Thank you!!
Thank you, Stuart and Jamie! Really good, simple and clear. Unfortunately the images are very fuzzy. I did it myself! The guy at the bike shop sneered and said I wouldn't be able to but I did. Just one thing, couldn't cramp the end.
So very helpful. Once I got it apart, I didn't need the rest of the video, but watched it anyway (after I was done). I was doing my rear wheel, but this gave me the info I needed. Only thing I was missing was a good pair of wire cutters, which my roommate's toolbox provided for me. I still need to do the front brake, but my rear brakes needed new pads and the wire was rusted and frayed and they had gone completely out on me the other day. That's what I get for not immediately assessing the bike when it came to me. $30 for new cables, pads, and front tube. Not bad considering that the average bike shop charges $100 for a tube change and lord-knows-how-much for pads and cables and I'd have to likely leave my bike for a day or overnight.
Great! Clear and concise, good camera angles Everyone creating guides to repair or install something should watch this first to see how it ought to be done. Most such guides are three times longer than needed, because they haven't been thought out beforehand nor edited afterwards, you have to watch a load of waffle before the useful stuff starts.
You did a great job with this video. Now I hope I can apply this knowledge to my bikes cables. I have a citizen folding bike, I think my brakes are too tight, the front wheel won't spin freely. The brake pads are touching the rim of the tire without me touching the handbrakes. It just happened after I unfolded the bike, maybe the cables are tangled. It's too dark outside, so I'll need to wait until the morning to troubleshoot this problem.
Thanks this was a great help. The final brake adjustment is a little tricky and you need the right kind of cable cutter, otherwise the cable end will become frayed making it difficult to thread through the casing.
Thanks so much for this posting this. For kids' bike with very old brake blocks...blocks have body left but I wonder if rubber's hardened over time and will thus slip more easily?
Awesome vid guys, clear concise and pretty much resembles my setup, I have a 95 trek 930 and snapped the front brake when I put a headset extender on it.
Cool. I have a little different set-up and it is on the back brake but with this video I feel I have what I need to figure it out. Thanks again, friends!
For some reason, after doing this my cable wont stay in the adjuster when I release my brake lever resulting in my brakes not working anymore. Can someone suggest what I've done wrong and how to fix it please? (The bike is brand new so it's definitely something I've done) Thank you in advance
Hi , I had the same problem and I discovered that the barrel ended nipple on my cable was only 6 mm instead of the usual 7 mm thus meaning it was too loose in the lever retainer.
at 03:27 you show the cable tight with a very short length and at the end of the video the cable shows 5cm more length ... also when you break only the left pad is moving, does it mean the right one is always touching the wheel? because i got this problem and your video doesnt solve anything
Even though being a lo-rez video, it presents comprehensive narrated visual information with appropriate camera angles, and competent editing . The producers of How to Replace Brake Cables - Bicycling Magazine video could learn a thing or two from this videojug.com offering.
I have an hybrid/trekking bicycle made in germany (brand Bergamont) and i would like to buy a pair of brake cables online in order to be able to replace the old ones. My questions are: 1) "What do I have to look for in terms of length of the cable, diameter of the cable, ?connectors?, and materials the cable is made from? 2) If I have, say, two rear cables (usual/standard lengh 2.5 mt?), can one of them become a front cable (just by cutting it shorter I guess)? 3) When they write 'universal cable', can/shall I then be fairly confident that the cable is suitable/fit for my bicycle (whatever its make or model)? Thank you for your help,
Ok I have 2 problems. Number 1, the cables I bought, the little bullet head is smaller. Does that make a difference ? Number 2. Even if I put the original cable back in. The bullet head, turns itself sideways. Does that make a difference ? I dont know what to do ?
oliver lindsay This shit is so annoying. I tried fixing the brakes for fucking 2 hours and still nothing. Bullshit. I can change inner tires, outer tires, chains but this fucking bike cable is annoying the shit out of me. What did you do?
Someone needs to make a video on what iput in search and have yet to find.. Replacing rear brake cable on e bike , replacing rear disk break cable , etc. Spoken in laymen terms so beginners can understand like oh I dunno explain the housing actually has a cable in the cover that the brake cable goes thru.. your making videos like everyone knows the parts your saying some of us are new and are looking to learn how to do ourselves thru you tube. But these are more trying to be professional than helpful !
Entire break swap in 4 min. Appreciate how it was organized starting with tools/items needed and then step by step. Thank you!
Absolutely no frills in this video, so clear and simple. Thanks!
This dude
This is the best video on TH-cam ! Did it in about 10 minutes ! And I suck on manual stuff !
What an easy to follow common sense video ...thanks !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Glad you found it useful : )
Hlo my gears does not work what I can do
Thank you. I have never done this before. I changed the cable on my wife's bike. She just left. I hope they work and she comes back.
Thank you.

No
her brakes weren't working and she was approaching a train. RIP
Update?
You forgot to say, "Your Honour" at the end!
This helped me SO much! Usually, I watch several "How To" videos until I find one that makes sense and is concise. I found this one first, watched it once and then successfully put on a new cable. Thank you!!
I didn't need to install a new part. However, this video helped me repair my daughter's front brake, and it worked well! Thank you!
Great video.
3:50 check to see if your break are working properly
(Only one side moves)
DONE ✔
I didn’t have to fast forward at all in your video!! Thanks for the awesome tutorial. Great job on editing!!

Still an excellent video 12 years later in 2024. Nice work!
Love it.
Easy, simply and clear!

Thank you so much! Followed your steps and it worked like a charm. Saved myself about $50!

Best example and how to I've seen on this topic
Thank you for the simple to the point video without an lll the BS commentary

Old video but still super clear!!!!
Does the steel cable need to be greased before inserting it into the sleeve/casing?
Great video well explained 👏
Simple and Easy..... I Give 10/10
Well done! Thanks for putting this up here
Great straight to the point
Thanks a lot for sharing quite useful video~
I have an older brake mechanism. I'm wondering if you guys can do a tutorial video for that one?
Where do you find the End Caps and Feral?
The Chicken Busters ebay or a bike shop
Online
Very good tutorial
Thnx. I followed your video. And i got it right.

Is a straight handle bar bike the same as say an old schwinn cruiser? I might sound stupid asking this lol.
This video tells the story with zero bs.
Great video super simple thanks
Great video!
very nice and clear video
i did this every time i pull the brake leaver the wire goes fully loose after its tight to begin with
Great video interesting to watch, Would you recommend a light oil on the inner cable to stop rust
Does youtube have a single video on how to do the back break lines for and old bxm style bike? Everything is front break on mountain bikes.
Very interesting thank you good video
thank you for this info now i know how to fix my bike brakes
Nice work...!! Much Appreciated. Regards A.

What do you do if the fork screw where cable goes through is warped?
Ok I have 2 problems.

Big thanks sir.
My brake popped out of the handle (not from replacement), should I just get a new cable or do you think I can reconnect it?
Same happened to me what did you do :(
oliver lindsay This shit is so annoying. I tried fixing the brakes for fucking 2 hours and still nothing. Bullshit. I can change inner tires, outer tires, chains but this fucking bike cable is annoying the shit out of me. What did you do?
Thanks you sir 🙏
My bicycle cable frayed and snapped yesterday, I will get the local shop to fix it. Interesting though! Uk 10.7.23 🇬🇧
I did it. Replaced both cables back and front. Adjusted. Now gotta find video on how do gear cable replacement.
I’ve never seen someone annotate a video with Snapchat captions before, but I respect the resourcefulness.
guys anyone know a link to a video that shows how to put the cable inside the levers?
Brilliant thank you!!!
thanks for this video, saved me 20 quid :)
Thanks. This was very helpful.
My new noodle has a plastic sleeve inside of it. what am I supposed to do with it?
thanks for showing us how to do this.

How about when cable that goes into the lever that goes onto the handle bars the end slips and goes horizontal.
Big help. Thanks.
very nice video to under stand and repair bike cable
When would you know when to replace it?
Awesome 😎
very helpful! thank you!
Good one. Wish it 's HD.
hey bro the cable from my bmx snapped. the part where you insert it into the lever at the top broke and I can't get the little ball out what can I do.
FaZe Door cut it
Thank you very much
Very good
My brake cable has a different nib on either end, i assume i cut off the other one
That's super easy. The bike shop by me wanted to charge me 100 bucks to realign my wheels and put a new break cable on plus $40 in labor
my bike is $160 :D you must have an expensive bike.
Bike shops hate TH-cam.
With the upswing in popularity of biking, repair shops charge an arm and a leg these days. It is cheaper and FASTER to do it yourself anymore.
mate, it's very useful
Good, interesting. Uk 🇬🇧
