    Personally I use a stethoscope with the hose left open at the end. This works for suspension noises as well and even better than leaving the metal pointer on the end. I agree 100% with your technique and am a 30+ year mechanic

      Yes, a stethoscope with the end removed works great. What I show in this video is a very cheap alternative to a stethoscope for the average person. Thanks for watching!

    I just wanted to say that this is a brilliant method. I have used the gas method and was always a litte eery about doing it that way but this is genius. I have a 4runner that has a misfire that I am trying to track down. Ive changed coil packs and plugs ands wires and the misfire remains so this is going to be my next move. Thanks so much.

    i have a 95 lexus v8 sc400. I see smoke coming from the thick hoses towards the rear of the intake and close to the firewall. the hose clamps also look burnt and smell. There are fumes coming from the area. I have rough idle, and the rpm goes in the wrong direction when i rev the car. The exhaust has sputtering sound. Does this sound like vacuum leak ?

  • @FormatDub
    @FormatDub 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Great idea, is that slight whilstle that you get when you start the engine part of this leak too? I have a similar sound at the moment when at very low rpms static, and increases in pitch with a tiny bit of gas applied.. Also get some strange issues when hard accelerating at random, sometimes like the engine is juddering/sticking trying to reach the higher rpm after a gear drop.. A 2018 Mercedes 220 diesel engine.. Not good

    God tip. Another way is using starter fluid. Just spray it over hoses, manifold, injection valves etc when the engine is running at idle. A vacuum leak will increase the idle speed when sprayed.

    if it is a diesel, you will notice increase in idle rpm for a moment. that is becasue of diesel speed adjusted by fuel rate not air; in contrast of gasoline engines.

    Ive always sprayed carb cleaner around to find vacuum leaks. When the carb cleaner hits a leak, engine rpm increases. The problem is that doesn't work with todays engines. The computers will keep the rpms steady even when spraying directly into the intake. 😔

  • @privateprivate1865

    Have an important question that is directly related to this video.. my question is did this vacuum leak which was on this engine did it happen to set any trouble codes or warning lights??????

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't think any codes were triggered.

    • @privateprivate1865
      @privateprivate1865 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@electronicsNmore I ask because I believe I have a vacuum leak that isn't triggering any trouble codes but it's still compromising engine performance as well as breaking. If you don't mind me sharing, I first noticed something when my brake pedal no longer retracts back to full upwards position. And the engine doesn't start in the cold very easily.. have a fluctuating idle.. it just seems as life I'm not getting enough vacuum to operate the brakes properly. Because all of the brakes grab. As if it's not releasing. Because there's not enough vacuum. But that would seem like it need to be an awfully huge vacuum leak to ruin engine performance so badly as well as breaking constantly on its own. But I can't find the damn vacuum leak? My brother believed it was the idle air control valve and I didn't believe his diagnosis fully, because I think it was a little bit of both. A worn I don't air control valve or dirty pintle and seat.. or it was just going bad.. but we replaced it and it only helped in the way that it stays running a little bit better. It feels like there's some sort of vacuum gate that is not closing and even opening at random causing the engines idle to fluctuate and compromising breaking as well. Phew... Uhhg. I said a mouthful lol sorry

    Plastic intake covers on many modern vehicles naturally make a hissing noise, so this would not be a very good method. Also, some vacuum leaks don't rear their ugly heads until the vehicle is under heavy load, so this method would only be good at detecting the type of leak that would affect the engine performance at idle.
