    @TheCod3r you were so close but you seemed to overlook the two small screws on the bottom left corner when the front of the drive is facing you .
    You can then angle the door then slide it towards you. You can then disassemble further into the drive to the opening mechanism.
    Be wary when getting replaced parts and try and get the exact model and board revision you're getting parts for.
    Lasers can be changed and the PS2 reprogrammed by homebrew software. Easiest way is by free Mcboot
    The version of the laser that you have here is a khs-400R, which were unreliable compared to the hd7 counterpart.
    Earlier phat models had the khs400 (a,b or c) the c variant is the best in terms of reliability and availability. Again the a or b variants need the playstation to be reprogrammed by homebrew to use the c variant.
    Yes allot to read in a comment but hopefully some information that's helpful

    Those dots should be spinning around in the main menu. It seems like there is a more serious issue there. Like its freezing in menu

    • @HoneypawsModsDE
      @HoneypawsModsDE 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah, probably a corrupted BIOS, since it not only doesn't spin the dots in the menu, but it also doesn't read the disc nor detecting any controller input...
      If the BIOS is corrupter or completely dead, it will freeze either before the menu shows up (dead BIOS) or it freezes as soon as the menu comes up (corrupted BIOS), which in his case seems to be more of a long and nerve wrecking task to deal with since i know that it is pretty hard to replace a BIOS on a PS2...
      in my opinion, trying to fix this PS2 is a huge waste of time, the only thing he still CAN DO, is to use it for spare parts, otherwise it's useless

    I have so many of these in my basement that needs small things done! I hope that this video touches on some of them.
    So, when you take a little time to look further into this, I would like your input. There are two potentiometers on the disc drive that you can turn to put more power into the laser for the different formats of discs that go in there, CDs and movies. When you get to that part, and you start turning the potentiometers to make the disk drive work again, I’d like to know your thoughts on this. I know that I have been told that people will set the potentiometers so that the laser will read again, but the disc drive is already on its way out because you have to adjust those. If it’s not worth buying a new disc drive, turning the potentiometers to make the disk drive power work again is the best option. But I’d like to know your thoughts.

    The tray sticking is most likely due to a worn out belt. It's small and buried but it does have a belt in the tray loading mechanism and I have seen them worn out on a couple of phat PS2s I've worked on for myself. A quick replacement and the tray should work good as new again. A new laser will also bring it back to life and reading discs again as with how used these consoles are the lasers in them are barely working anymore if at all even when cleaned. You might have better luck with a slim console due to how much newer they are but a PS2 that was well used will have had it's laser working overtime reading those discs and they have to work harder with scratched discs which you can only imagine how many of those they had to read in their lifetime so yeah...definitely in need of a new one by now. As for if it's worth replacing that all depends on how much you want to play original discs. There are some decent homebrew solutions for loading games from USB and even an internal hard drive on the phats using the network adapter which there are also modern replacements that support SATA (though they also tend to omit the network port which I find to be odd since it helps with homebrew and such to have network access in some cases).

    Disc not reading is more likely the laser and those are much cheaper than the entire drive. $5-10 US usually. The laser was the part that was known for going bad the most. Not the power supply.
    After you take the lid off the top of the drive, you'll see two small screws in the bottom left. Taking those out lets you lift the tray up at an angle and pull it out. Those are also known for causing the drive to stick or make that grind sound when it ejects if they're too tight.
    Change the drive belt and the clock battery. The one blue dot on boot is to let you know the battery died.
    The ribbon cable connecting the power to the motherboard can be known to tear when opening the case.

  • @crosswalkX
    @crosswalkX 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The CMOS battery on the Playstation 2 is dead.
    To TheCod3r, I don't know if you noticed, the spinning orb animation on the title screen is not working. I suggest you replace it with a new CMOS battery. I don't know if you can if you already gave it away. But in the future videos on Playstation 2 consoles please remember to replace the CMOS battery if the Playstation 2 orb animation is not responding and also check the date and time clock settings. I have the same issue with my Playstation 2 console although my console collected dust over the 20 years in Utah, which I need to take into a gaming repair shop.
    Also the laser on the PS2 likely needs to be replaced with a new one, either that or you forgot to connect all 4 ribbon cables. I recently opened up my PS2 console and took it apart to replace the dead CMOS battery with a new one, I dusted the inside of my PS2 circut board and fan, I did open up the disc drive to lubricate the metal rods but my disc tray got stuck and then I forgot to connect the laser disc ribbon cable so I took it apart the third time and connected it all up. And once I put it back together for the third time, I tried it out and my disc tray opens better and my CMOS battery fixed the Spinning orb animation and date and time setting and it reads my PS1 and PS2 games perfectly. That repair job took me 5 days and it was very intense and time consuming to do.

    There is a small rubber belt in the drive that needs to be replaced to get the drive ejecting consistently again. Those stretch and become unreliable over the years.
    Also, there are two black screws holding the disc tray down. Remove those screws and it isn't too hard to remove the disc tray from there, getting better access to the laser.
    Replacing the entire disc tray is an option with these consoles, but you're probably better off hunting down the same model of laser. Of course finding working ones is becoming more of a hassle as time goes on.
    Lastly, just because I saw several comments mention it, replacing the CMOS battery isn't going to do anything other than get the console to keep time. I wouldn't even consider replacing it until I got the unit reading games again. Hope that helps, and best of luck.

    It's been a long time since I've fixed a PS2 but if I remember correctly the lens is adjustable. I'm sure it has 2 screws and you turn them half a turn (but for the life of me I can't remember the direction). It raise the lens closer to the disc so I'm assuming anti clockwise to loosen it and keep doing half turns till it reads. Plus the disc tray runners might need cleaning and greasing, probably a good idea to change the black elastic band on the motor too. Clock battery needs changing too but not important but its cheap

    I have worked on a lot of ps2 consoles when testing the laser try both a blue and silver game discs as blue I believe are cd version and silver are dvd if the cd side of the laser failed you won't know just testing a silver game and regarding the disc tray struggling to open. That will be the drive belt 95% of the time and it cannot no longer have enough strength to put the laser Cartridge away from the magnet centre cap that supports the disc 👍👌

    Try turning the console upside down then resetting and see if it loads the game, the drives become misaligned over time and that can often make it load, there are also adjustments on the laser which you can use to re align it so turning it upside down is not needed should that be the reason its not loading. The better option than a new drive would be to put a hard drive in it and soft mod it with Free McBoot, I would be happy to put Free Mcboot onto one of your memory cards if you cover the post.

    That ps2 is frozen. The dots should be moving on the Home Screen

      That's only true if the rtc clock is running (the battery is not flat or haven't been disconnected/then the time not set)
      It can perfectly work otherwise.

      @@5mf1nc fair enough. I never realised that and never had mine do that and I’ve had mine years so I think I’d better check the battery in mine especially as I haven’t used it for god knows how many years

    shame u gave up on this repair id imagine u would make more money on the video alone or at least make up the difference, so the cost to repair the unit that ur worried about shouldn't matter i would think. Unfortunately if u get into retro repairs this is what its going to be like so i dont think u will be relying on making money from these being scrapped if u dont/cant repair them.

    If your video connection was working, that PS2 was locked up. there should be a series of moving dots on the "Browser" screen. I don't think it was your controller, but the PS2 itself freezing...

      The moving dots show that the clock is keeping time. In this case, the 2032 clock battery is dead, and the clock is at 0:00 and not running. If he had a working controller, he can get to the PS2 settings and set the time. That will get the dots moving again.

      @@Leemonoid Glad to be of service. I've owned my PS2 for a LONG time, and I've had to replace the battery. By now, many PS2s have the same problem.
