One of my favorite John Steinbeck books is also “Travels with Charley” which I read 40 years ago and always thought I would like to also do. So in 2017 I traveled with Bella(little white boxer) from MA across the northern US to Idaho to Grand Tetons down to Northern New Mexico through Utah and Colorado and then a return to FL.

XD i just looked out my window onto the building across the street and then compared it to the picture i see in my screen: snow covered mountains, some trees with snow and a river with ice in a beautiful winter landscape. I am 66 years old, retired, in good health and am financially OK. I have always enjoyed traveling and seeing this big, beautiful country but I have never been able to slow down in my travels to really explore areas. I am, for the first time in my life, in a position to find out if I would enjoy that kind of travel. I bought a tall cap for the bed of my pickup and am outfitting as simply as I can and make it as comfortable as it can be. I'm not spending much time or money on it. I am just making it functional. I'm hoping to take a few trips to work out the bugs and find what works and doesn't work for me. If I enjoy this type of travel, I will invest more in this lifestyle and probably make more of a commitment on a camper of some type.
Your videos have given me a lot of ideas on what to camp in and travel ideas.
Thanks for doing this and keep up the good work.

You won't know cold unless you spent several months up at Kavick base, located at 197 miles north of the arctic circle, in the state of Alaska. During the winter time, the temps go down as far as -40 to -70 degrees bellow 0. Its so cold, that if you took a pot of boiling water and tossed it outside in the air, it would instantly freeze into snow.

I too like a quick to prepare meal, so here is one of my favorites. I use a wok for it, but a stew pot like your blue one will work. It's a stir fry with ramen noodles with vegetables. I boil some water to cook the noodles, when they are almost done, I add my vegetables, I use a handful of frozen stir fry mix. When those are heated, drain everything and put back into the pot. Then I add some olive oil, soy sauce and Worchester sauce, and I usually add some cooked sausage or chicken at this time. Thawed frozen shrimp are good too. And for an extra kick, add some liquid smoke, this is really good on the shrimp. This is a fast and tasty one pan meal.

I love wandering around Lowe's, Harbor Freight and sometimes automotive stores for ideas on improving situations in my van. The other day while in Lowe's I spotted a basket that holds my Jackery 240 and it's mounted perfectly on the wall of the van. It's just above my bed and I can easily reach to turn lights and/or one or both fans. In Harbor Freight I found magnets that I use to hang emergency blankets (heavy duty ones with a reflective side and orange or green on the other side) on the exterior walls of the van while I'm camped. The reflective sides help to reflect the sun's rays which helps to keep the temperature down inside the van. Aluminet shade cloth is another useful item from Amazon useful to make awnings also using magnets and tent poles, as the aluminet shade cloth has grommets like on a tarp.

G'Day from Australia Slim. I have a small motorhome that has a similar lay-out to your van. In winter I like to sit inside with the sun streaming in through the large rear window. Your very ingenious idea with the solar panel would have the rear window facing directly away from the sun. May I suggest that you re-invent your idea and hinge your panel at the rear end of the van and then devise a raising mechanism at the front end of rhe panel. The raising method could be operated through the opened roof vent. This would have the added advantage of being able to lower your panel from inside at the onset of unexpected weather.
There you go Mate. Another little project.

What an ingenious idea to tilt your solar panel. Doesn't require any ladder or climbing.

Hi Slim. Long time watcher but a newly subscribed viewer. I haven't seen a single one of your videos that I haven't thought, "hey that'll work on our new camper!". Stay safe and have fun.

I am right now building a solar system to my very old (42 y) oldtimer Camper and i was thinking of how to mount them (2x 290Wp Solar panels). Easiest way would be glue them onto the roof with plastic spoilers but your video showed me that in winter there is really a need for tilting them. Commercial tilting systems with remote controls are really too expensive, overengineered and too much effort because it will break when you need it mostly. So your idea is brilliant. Just my roof is much higher and i cannot adapt it (yet). I have to find another way. I dont want climb up to that roof all the time and manually do it. But i love how you solve problems. Its a joy to watch your videos. I am right now at home waiting for LiFePo4 cells coming from china so i can diy a serious solar system and because of the general covid lockdown. I make tours in my closer surroundings with my dog and my recumbent trike and my dog is working as a sledge horse pulling me through the snow, she loves that and i appreciate her helping me, its a lot of fun for both of us.
