  • Although the content is nothing unusual for me, how the video evolved certainly is. The original working title was "Anger", as I lashed out at whoever destroyed the trees around one of my favorite public campsites. The result was very unsettling, and at the midnight hour (literally) I completely changed the tone through editing. I feel at lot better with the results! From my series on Northwest Canada travels. No voice-overs or added music, and all background sounds are exactly as recorded.

I feel I'm to old to travel, 71, the last time I went anywhere was before my wife died back in 2006. Back before I married her I had 'pipe dreams' of getting a old school bus and fixing it up to just travel. That never happened. Now my body is telling me why it wasn't the best idea to work at a place 40 years with cement floors, so even walking now is sometimes a challenge for me.
That is why I enjoy 'riding along' with Slim and his camera. @Slim, so thank you for taking us along, I'm able to see places and sights that I would never see, thank you.

Oh man don't say you are too old! 75 next birthday and this winter will be my 2nd in my camper with my little pup out in the desert. Last year before I started this I was really scared about being too old to do this. Thing is you better do it now, we are not getting any younger, looking forward to doing this as long as I am physically able and can remember where I'm heading too, lol.

@@terrybrowning3542 What I didn't put in there, Besides having trouble sometimes walking, most of it is from bad knees, both, it hurts like a knife if I try to kneel, if that wasn't enough, bad shoulders, trying to life even 40 pounds just using my shoulders, I can't, again to much pain. Said all that to say this, for me, I'm to old to do something like this. I'll enjoy Slims videos.

N8pu, it is not the number of years that prevents you from creating adventures, it is how you treated your body. I am 75 & can do most of what I did at 40 or 50, only shorter & not as fast......keep that in mind for next time, if you believe in re incarnation....God Bless

@@terrybrowning3542 Totally agree - I am a couple of months short of 69, with some health issues, but my dreams of traveling the world solo are what keep me going. Worked outdoors as a wildlife biologist most of my life, often alone in remote areas, and that is when I am happiest. Keep it simple, and keep going - it's the journey that is important, no matter how far or how long it takes. To be alive is to be in motion and change. Best wishes to you and your pup from Alaska.

@@dave_n8pu I have very bad knees and shoulders, too - really helped by cutting almost all carbohydrates out of diet (cause joint inflammation). Check out ketogenic diet: high fat, moderate protein, very low carbs - think steak and eggs, but no ice cream, bread, cookies, chips. I'll bet you will be pleasantly surprised at how quickly that joint pain will subside - not disappear - will still hurt some to lift above shoulders and kneel on something hard, but won't hurt at night or when getting up from chair, climbing stairs, etc.

That big machinery that you found in the woods?
I can only think it's one of 2 things. potentially a printing press or a stamping machine of some kind for parts..
As for pets? dogs in particular? I've got my little one here right behind me with his tennis ball.
I've had him since he was 6 weeks old and he's between 17 and 20 now.
due to my bad memory because I can't remember the year we got him. 🤷🤦
I've had several dogs in my life and it takes a little piece of your soul every time one passes away.
so I can understand with the limitations you are working with why you wouldn't bother having a pet at this time.
I'm one of those folks that need to be needed and I'll tell you what, there are days I wouldn't get out of bed if it weren't for my furkid needing me to take care of him.
My kids are grown & I'm a grandmother.
I love my fur kids but I don't diss people who don't or don't want to have another one.
    my sister's that way.
she never had children so that when she got her little puppy dog, she became her child.
The sweet pupper was a purebred and she came down with some of the genetic problems that purebreds have and she had to be put down.
my sister won't ever have another dog, it hurt her too much.
thank you for the adventures in the North I don't know that I'll ever get a chance to go up that far but man that's awesome and beautiful!!

Too many people on TH-cam think you have to have a dog to survive, and many copy others, I see it with survivalist video's all the time. Truth is, a dog is a huge responsibility just like you said, and yes, they do always get in the way when your trying to film wildlife. And if you don't have them on a leash, they also get in the way when your trying to work. Your living the life of freedom, and that is something that I wish more people got the chance to do. Great video as always Slim!

A few days ago, Bing's daily photograph showed a road going downhill beside a river and a tall mountain with jagged peaks. "Alberta!" I thought. "That's Alberta!" When Bing provided the location name, I learned that I was correct. It was, indeed, Alberta. You're a good teacher, Slim. Many thanks for letting me travel with you through these wonderful videos.

Great series! We have a dog, but do not travel with him for the reasons you stated - so it adds extra cost to our vacation expenses to provide for his care while we're gone. I appreciate the natural sounds of this log. So many travelers add annoying click/snap music to nature scenes, which is totally out of place.

    Hi Slim!
I know, that a flat tire is no problem for you. But at 9:58 your left front light is out on the Jeep. How do you deal with those kind of problems? I own a 1990 Nissan Maxima, that car has bulbs, i can change all of them whereever i want it. But your Jeep is a newer car, with a LED(?)front light, how do you solve that?
I know you sleep most of the nights, but do you plan to put extra lights on the front of the Jeep like they are on off-road trucks?
Was a great series, especially the one with the paddlewheel graveyard.

Really enjoyed your talk today. I have a dog and while I love him dearly he sure can cut back on some places I want to go. Plus he doesn't like camping. LOL Had to laugh when you made those potatoes, yes they sure make lots. Someone gave me a couple containers when I first started camping. I had to store some and use a little each day. And then at the end when you showed how someone fool cut fresh wood for a fire. That is so sad that someone would be that dumb to think you can burn green wood or just the thought that they would destroy such beauty. Stay home if you don't know or care about the beauty of a forest.

Well, I watch videos to be entertained, and to learn something. I think I hit both in this one. Thanks for the bit about the hashbrowns. I have never given any thought to dehydrated hashbrowns, but its a darn good thing, no refrigeration, no peeling and grating of potatoes, just the perfect thing for on the road. For me I can keep them ready to go when I pack the camper. I bought the Hungry Jack brand at Publix (a Florida based grocery chain), two cartons for $3. Will give them a try at home first. Thanks for the suggestion.
Changing subjects, I am sure you will be doing vehicle maintenance when you get home, but do not overlook the trailer wheel bearings. If you need new ones, buy genuine Timkens, do not settle for less.

Slim that about that abandoned machine you may be right. A rough planer would be logical being so close to the highway. Knowing the history of the highway when they punched it through in 1942 sawn lumber was logistically impossible to haul the further north they went so yea a rough planer would make sense for making bridge planks. There are stories of D8 caterpillar dozers buried along the highway when they got stuck or broke down beyond repair. Another story is from a retired cat skinner I used to work with who worked for the federal government in the 80s for the airports. He hauled a crawler from Grande Prairie to Fort St. John to do some work on the abandoned air strip during the job he unearthed a cache of 50 gallon drums of DDT. Even then the US military was thinking of using the stuff which is sad and disturbing.
