    I know this is an old video but if you leave it just the way you have it but put an empty oil container inside the bucket and the little hose into that container it will save you cleaning and dumping the bucket

    great idea, try putting the clear hose four inches inside a 4 quart plastic oil bottle, then put the plastic bottle inside the 5 gallon container, . This will save a big mess inside the 5 gallon bucket, the oil is collected in a large 4 quart container. to be used or disposed.

    This is a good way of draining large volumes, but for small volumes, the next evolution is putting the jug inside the vacuum. Good video!

    Hey Try putting a plastic milk container in that empty bucket, extend the small plastic hose in it to catch the oil should take care of splashing oil and it'll all ready be in a container to recycle. :) Thanks for the Vid.

    I also use this method for changing oil. I clip the bottom end of the pickup tube on a slight angle. A flat pickup tube will suck itself to the crankcase bottom. After the oil is all sucked out I stick the oily tube in a small bottle of soapy water for a few seconds. No mess afterwards and that also goes into your used oil container.

  • @toddh6234
    @toddh6234 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Run the tube deeper into the bucket to prevent oil from getting sucked into the vacuum. For those that don't have a shop vac, cut the bottom off of an 2 liter bottle then cut the bottle in half vertically. Hold it under the drain bolt with the cap end facing out. Remove the bolt and direct the oil into a catch container. Or buy a FORM-A-FUNNEL

    For the 1/2" tube that goes into the 5 gal bucket....I'd extend it and put it into a smaller (less messy) 1/2 gal container and keep the oil concentrated in a smaller space. Everything would work just the same but less mess. You could also put a paper coffee filter on the largerer vacuum hose with a rubber band so no oil sneaks by. Nice video keep up the good work.

  • @happycat0411
    @happycat0411 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Great idea! BTW ~ If you're worried about the vacuum sucking up oil just use a rubber band and wrap a folded dried out alcohol wipe around the nozzle portion that is inside the bucket.

    Hey, when your vacuum revs up there is actually less strain, as the motor is just now free spinning. The more suction the greater the strain. It’s a common misconception. The motor goes louder because now it is allowed to ramp its speed up, due to less load. Don’t worry about that let er rip. If you have a way to measure amperage or wattage, try this; put your hand over the end of the hose and watch the power draw, it will actually drop.

  • @johnnyz7752
    @johnnyz7752 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If you put an empty 2 liter soda bottle inside the bucket and run the clear plastic tube through the lid and into the soda bottle, 1. It won’t make a mess in the bucket, and 2. You can cap the soda bottle to dispose of the oil.

      Chris Notap has a video like this and one with the catch container inside the vacuum itself!
      I tried this, but I had bought the cheapest vacuum I could, and I wanted to change my oil while my jacks and stands are under my other car, which has a blown head gasket.
      Since the other car's engine is full of forbidden milkshake, I wanted to flush the contaminated engine with used motor oil.
      In Chris's first video he used a small intermediary container, like a glass jar, or a Nalgene water bottle, to collect the used oil.
      I bought a 2-gallon bucket and lid just for this--$8.50 at Home Depot!
      Walmart has a 2-gallon bucket for $3.78, but they didn't have any lids.
      Then it didn't fit inside my shop vac.
      I didn't know what to do besides wander around different stores seeing what fit inside my shop vac, so I used an empty oil jug, which immediately crushed, just like Chris demonstrated.
      That would still work, right? Eventually the oil would inflate the jug, right?
      Right?!
      No.
      So, now I am trying to figure out how to make this work. A $9 1-gallon Nalgene and a slightly bigger tube, I guess.
      He also used the cut-off top of a 2L soda bottle to connect the clear tubing to the shop vac.

    I've seen another like this it was for a motorcycle. Obviously in this case it was necessary for the smaller hose but the bigger hose will extract even faster. Of course if you do a car it should be even bigger. He also had used something to ensure that the oil was blocked from the vacuum inlet but I don't remember what. I like this build it's a lot more simple, on the other video he's using gaskets to get an airtight seal but the super glue is nice too. Guess it depends on your application are you gonna use it everyday and travel with it or just to get oil out of the small engines in your garage/workshop.

    I have a commercial fluid extractor that I could use for this application as I have had the same issue with another piece of lawn equipment...I solved the problem by purchasing a brass pipe of appropriate length, diameter and thread pattern to the plug...with a warm engine, raise the unit with a block of wood, remove the plug and install the pipe then lower the unit with a pan or bottle to collect the oil....to be sure all oil is removed raise the opposite side with the block of wood for complete drainage.....only problem I have ever had is to remember where I stored the brass extension pipe....has nothing to do with age....

    Good idea. I have a hand pump for my ChrisCraft since it doesnt have a drain plug and has to be emptied through the dipstick. It sucks hand pumping 6 quarts out. I may have to make one of these in the spring.

      Brett Buckley Chris Craft boats are really nice. I wish I had one. I wouldn't want to hand pump out 6 quarts of oil. That would take a while. Yeah you could make one like I did and use an electric shop vac. Use the biggest hose that will fit in the dipstick tube and make sure the hoses in the bucket are as far apart as possible. I'd turn it on for 5 or 10 seconds to make sure the oil isn't going into the shop vac. Thanks for watching and good luck!!

    Place an empty 2 liter soda bottle in the 5 gal. bucket, then run the oil hose through the lid and extend it into the soda bottle. Oil will fill into the soda bottle and not all over the 5 gal. bucket. Dispose of old oil at your local hazardous waste disposal center.

      Not a problem. I just finished an oil change using my Pela 6000 manual oil extractor and was thinking about this during that change. Even with the oil at operating temperature it still takes about 15 minutes to wait for it to pump out. If I give your idea a shot I think it would take less than 3 minutes.

    • @Lanninglongarmmowing
      @Lanninglongarmmowing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      johnj189 There's only one way to find out. If you plan on using a corded shopvac try to use some old metal gas can that's been washed out or a metal barrel. I tried using my corded shop vac with the plastic bucket that's shown in my video and it almost sucked it flat. lol. I think an old metal gas can or barrel would work better. 15 minutes is to long to wait and you still have to pump it up.

    Clearly this sucks the oil out effectively, but does it sucking all out? It would have been good at the end to open up a drain plug and see how much oil, if any, had been left behind. The viewer needs reassurance that this does not leave any appreciable amount behind. Good video though, thank you.
