I like Homefront. Never played the second one though. I still remember that opening scene on the bus. Compelling stuff. I gotta say I’m really tired of everyone being afraid of China though. On one hand chinas not scary enough to be the antagonists but on the other hand we’re actually scared of being banned from the country if we do that. Oh so China is scary. I see. Same thing happened with the Red Dawn remake. NK stood in for China, the original invaders, because people didn’t want China to take action against them. I’m waiting for someone to tell them to go pound sand
The CCP uses money to try to control anyone. "If you make china the bad guy, your game might be banned fron china's billion-populatiob market.... so, will you not change your game?" - prolly the CCP meeting the devs this is the repercussion of the world depending too much on a nation(manufacturing) that we accidentally funded an enemy for years...
@@hood954 that’s why I said red dawn remake not the original red dawn. The Chinese were the original antagonist for the remake because duh, they’re taking over the world, but then Hollywood got scared. collider.com/red-dawn-remake-china-north-korea/
Considering that China holds 60% of the US' bonds, 70% of the world's manufacturing capacity in most of the major fields, is the primary supplier of rare earth elements and semiconductors globally and has shown that it isn't afraid to open a trade war, I'd say we should be scared of China.
Same! Came around the same time Kim Jong-Ill died, and the world was paying attention to North Korea. I was really interested in that country at the time. Good timing
Glad to see this. Was starting to think the days of your longer documentaries may be over. Thank you. Love the original game, and have the sequel, but have never played it. However, Xbox Series X recently released 60FPS boost for the title, and I know the game was lambasted for a poor frame rate, so maybe now it's time to give it a whirl. Keep up the great work!
The campaign design in Frontlines is honestly what every other shooter at the time should have aspired to improve upon with its more open and freeform way of approaching objectives and scenarios. So sad they went down the heavily scripted route for the original Homefront when their previous game had so much potential. The only game I can think of that took a similar approach is Medal of Honour Airborne - thankfully that's also a great little game.
I'm glad you covered this series, because it had so much potential. One of the problems of the first game is that a lot of the interesting narrative elements and backstory were in the tie-in novel: The Voice of Freedom. It laid out in great detail how Korea united under one flag and invaded: in a nutshell, a fictional Kim rises to power and renounces the dictatorships of North Korea's past, while opening up the country and eventually unifying. Then he launches a satellite under the guise of providing free broadband over the US, but it ends up being a massive EMP that cripples most of America's defenses, allowing a west coast invasion. The US military battles the Koreans but are eventually pushed back to the Mississippi River, where a line is drawn between the occupied western United States and the free eastern side. It was a really interesting setup that wasn't properly implemented into the story, but at least the game tried. Homefront: the Revolution, on the other hand....not so much.
@@whiffyclarke Yeah I read the book before the game came out and was so excited, but then I played the game and in ended up featuring so little from the book that it was quite a letdown.

@@freddiejohnson6137 well they did make some absolute stinkers towards the end of the original midway series, I certainly wouldn’t call Armageddon a good game
Homefront Revolution, to me, is one of the most underrated games you can get for under 10$ The game was like 80% off a month after coming out, it was an incredible deal. Edit: I would like to add, that it's true that the story for homefront didn't really make sense. However I always thought it would work better if there was a touch of sci-fi (especially in revolutions). They should have had it that the Korean people discovered some sort of Alien tech that they used to have a quick jump in technology. this way it would explain how they first conquered the US and how they maintained a technological edge in Revolutions.
I actually really liked Honefront: The Revolution. It’s my second favourite Far Cry game (after Blood Dragon). Seriously though, while the story didn’t hit as hard as in the first game, the gameplay loop was far more entertaining and the gunplay far more enjoyable in Revolution. I got the game for $5 and I wouldn’t mind paying full price for it second time around. Granted, I played it only recently, so all major bugs have been fixed. Kudos to Dambuster Studios for not abandoning their game!
I do question people who insist The Revolution is somehow still a buggy mess and that the original is better. Either they're so out of touch and don't do basic research or they just refuse to give the game a real shot to begin with. The Revolution nowadays is far better than the original in every conceivable way and is way more interesting than people give it credit for.
@@InfernalMonsoon My thoughts exactly. But hey, at least the two of us aren’t fooled. Maybe in ten years time it’ll make it’s way into a “top 10 underrated games” list of some kind. Only time will tell.
It's been enhanced on Xbox Series X as well. It now runs at 60 fps. There might be graphical enhanced as well but not sure. It looks better than I remember, but maybe my mind is playing tricks on me. The lighting looks pretty good in this game.
My dad's favorite MP was on the first Homefront. RIP pops, cben830 if his buddies happen to see this video and, moreover, this comment. Y'all meant a lot to him in his gaming.
This channel is awesome! So glad I found it! Also, I loved Homefront the revolution. Picked it up for £3 on an XB sale and it can be a really immersive FPS game.
For anyone that doesn’t know, you can still play online on PC, very small numbers, but still there, I just got it for (not a bot or a sales pitch, just not worth the $20 on steam lol) $1.98 on that G2A site to relive some nostalgia - was worth it honestly, I just wish this game would pick up traction again :(((
The first had quite a few memorable moments. The white phosphorous attack and the golden gate bridge. I still feel it could have been a stronger franchise given more love. The sequel might have killed it for good though
This game was something else. What creeped me out the most was when a few Korean soldiers shot this kids parents in front of him and hearing him cry shortly after during the bus ride at the start of the game. I was a young lad when I 1st started the game. The game was also very hard to play, even on easy.
It wasn't hard at all. To date it's the only FPS (and one of the few games in general) that I've beaten in one sitting, dying a handful of times at most. And I suck at FPSs. Maybe that's your kid self speaking.
Yeah in my opinion people doesnt get enough credit to Homefront in terms of presentation. I liked how both games presented questionable morals of resistance that always let to violence escalation where ordinary people get hurt or killed. Like white phosphorus in Homefront 1 or KPA using poison gas in response to uprising in Homefront Revolution. Not same level as SOTL but close
@@hppvitor perhaps it was, it felt harder than CoD of sorts when I was younger, Battlefield did feel a good bit easier than this game was as well. Despite the quite fucked up parts of the game, I thought it was good.
@@soulbrother5435 the game was good, but it did mess up my young mind a little back then with the massacring of families and hiding among dozens of dead civilians. Unlike TLOU 2, Homefront did a good job of what it did.
While effective, it was handled with the subtlety of a sledgehammer, was too in your face and it did it so much that all effect was lost. I feel the Revolution did it far better by not reveling in the violence and rather expressed that oppression with more sinister methods, the liaison officers being a prime example of just how corrupted a scenario like that can get.
There are a lot of people who like it, but overall it's more of a niche game. With some interesting concepts and themes, but it doesn't quite take off. And a very entertaining multiplayer, but it's still just an improved copy of CoD with some BF elements. Something like Spec Ops, but not at the same level.
For it being a brand new IP from essentially an indie dev with real funding during the height of Call of Duty's dominance in the shooter market, 2mil copies over only a few months is objectively a big rise. There was a lot of hype for what the series could become now that they had their foot in the door, the sequel would make or break the series, and it killed it. If a second Homefront had been more successful than the first, it would have cemented itself as a household name in the context of shooters.
The first game can be skipped as it's nothing more than a typical CoD clone. The Revolution on the other hand is one I do recommend giving a go, if you don't mind open world shooters that isn't a flat out power fantasy of course. Honestly The Revolution's punishing guerilla approach to gameplay makes it stand out for me.
Homefront's multiplayer was so much fun, i looked at the player count and the it gets more than 30 players every day, you can be sure i'll be one of them, i miss this game so much
Front lines fuels of war is one of those games you randomly play cause your bored one day and then you fall in love with it lol. Or at least I did, I remember it was one of the only games I had at my grandparents house and I forgot halo one weekend so I decided it was worth a shot and I loved the campaign, beat it countless times.
The DLC really redeemed the revolution in my opinion, i enjoyed the base game, but the dlc added a voice to the main character and from there i could actually connect and care for the main character and the revolution
First DLC was not good imo, needlessly difficult to the point of being flat out annoying. DLC 2 was mostly good and fun but that final fight at the end was just bullshit. But DLC 3 on the other hand, now that was a VERY good DLC indeed; arguably the best content in the game.
It's a really awesome series (both games), definitely underrated. The second one has some room for improvement (although I think all of the technical issues have been resolved by now). Really heartbroken that there have not been any updates or re-releases since 2017. I really hope they reboot this again in the near future.
@@Orcawhale1 Not to mention the gunplay being actual dogshit. Rarely have I played a first person shooter with that little feedback on what you're doing.
I remember in 8th grade being so hoped for the first game but feeling totally meh. The occupied America setting felt scary and real but the story was extremely short
Except that white phosphorous scene was handled with the subtlety and delicacy of an atom bomb and predicting a death is nothing new at all. Spec Ops however is fantastic, that's for certain.
Homefront was underrated. Yeah it was short and the story definitely ended on a cliff but the shooting was good, the graphics were solid, the sound design was well above average and the environments were highly detailed and well designed. Would love to see a proper sequel.
Stellar piece as always, GVMERS! I've always wanted to play the said game, but as I've seen gameplay footage, it does look like a run-of-the-mill shoot em up FPS where you bullet rings hollow in a paper-thin plot. I'd like to make a suggestion on what you can cover on next as a retrospective: *_The Front Mission Series._* I know the franchise is mostly 70% Japan-only, but when a North American Release comes out, it's usually a magnificient hit, or an embarrassing miss. Cheers, and thanks for the content. Definitely keeps the boredom off nowadays.
Working in the gaming industry must be so frustrating. Management is generally incompetent to the needs of the industry and the employees in their respective fields but that gap seems absolutely MASSIVE in particular to the game industry
If we're talking CoD clones then no, it's not a shame. Those games were the dark age of FPS and basically killed creativity in an attempt to usurp CoD's crown rather than being unique and interesting FPS games in their own right. Now if we're talking more in the vain of games like Half-Life 2, Doom 3 and F.E.A.R. then I'll strongly agree with that sentiment.
Love the channel. Doesn't appear that these have been done yet, but here would be a few suggestions on titles to document thru the channel: Gun, Kane & Lynch, syphon filter, true crime (I believe sleeping dogs is somewhat of a successor but still) and hell, a Rare game of your pick like Banjo or Conker
And? Its OK to like a game that is essentially garbage that nobody likes....People seem to have this weird notion that you can only like games that everyone else also likes, which are generally the same imbeciles who talk like if a game gets anything lower than 8-8.5 reviews than it must be garbage the kind of people who are ruining gaming.

"If you make china the bad guy, your game might be banned fron china's billion-populatiob market.... so, will you not change your game?" - prolly the CCP meeting the devs
this is the repercussion of the world depending too much on a nation(manufacturing) that we accidentally funded an enemy for years...
It was the soviets/Russians who were the main antagonist of the first red dawn film, not China.
@@ItsRawdraft2 We make cars they make the parts that make cars. LOL We are fucked in the long run…
The on the fly weapon customization was so cool! Also these documentaries are so well made, I’ve enjoyed them all
I was hyped as a teen when the first one dropped
Same!
Came around the same time Kim Jong-Ill died, and the world was paying attention to North Korea. I was really interested in that country at the time. Good timing
Yep, me too! I also remember Best Buy giving out free Homefromt-themed headsets for those who preordered
I miss Homefronts multiplayer. Gotta love and hate dedicated servers.
One thing I distinctly remember about Homefront was the sniping. Felt so good!
Ironic how China was seen as not powerful enough ten years ago, how times have changed
lol depends by whom. Here we certainly swas 2nd world powerhouse.
Got me missing fuel of war’s multiplayer
Also crytech and their signature weapon customization
The campaign design in Frontlines is honestly what every other shooter at the time should have aspired to improve upon with its more open and freeform way of approaching objectives and scenarios. So sad they went down the heavily scripted route for the original Homefront when their previous game had so much potential. The only game I can think of that took a similar approach is Medal of Honour Airborne - thankfully that's also a great little game.
FOW's multiplayer is up there with a handful of my fave's with the map variety, vehicles, aircraft and overall fun.
I only remember this game being 90% reduced in retail value by 2012 lol
The book also opens with the US in a terrible depression. Weirdly I read the book but never played the game.
@@whiffyclarke Yeah I read the book before the game came out and was so excited, but then I played the game and in ended up featuring so little from the book that it was quite a letdown.
I forgot about this game, underrated despite the short campaign
@Exodus N Unfortunately you missed out on a fantastic multiplayer, wish the servers weren’t shut down :(
@@TexasLawbringer77 still up on PC mate! Just got it this week, player numbers are just low
Great production work!
Can you do the High Moon Transformers games? War for Cybertron and Fall of Cybertron are underrated.
Spec-Ops: The Line was far more gripping and emotionally impactful than anything Homefront was trying to do.
Keep doing what you do GVMERS. this kind of quality made videos are a form of art.
I’d love to see a Rise & Fall of Mortal Kombat at some point, it’s a series that’s definitely had its ups & downs & I love your in depth analysis
It's not really a fall when the series is still in production and the current game is still getting regular updates.
@@freddiejohnson6137 it's a fall since they literally fucked entire lore in existence
mythologies sub-zero
special forces
those were the bad ones
until midway became netherrealm studios and under WBgames made atrocity called mk11
where they had perfect opportunity for recycling old 3d models but changed everything and completely ruined the story
story and gameplay with crap like FATAL BLOW - wich isn't fatal at all
and turning a fighting game into 15 second cutscenes with every combo
@@freddiejohnson6137 well they did make some absolute stinkers towards the end of the original midway series, I certainly wouldn’t call Armageddon a good game
@@ryszakowy bruh you’re just being bias
This channel is the only one that I consistently watch all the videos from. Good work and delivery (documentary) as usual.
It's kind of incredible how many franchises that shined through back in 2011 completely died or were ruined since
The multiplayer of the first homefront was amazing
Homefront Revolution, to me, is one of the most underrated games you can get for under 10$
The game was like 80% off a month after coming out, it was an incredible deal.
It is one of the most underrated shooters of all time and I wish people would be willing to give it a shot.
Homefront and Homefront: The Revolution arent related, The Revolution is only "Homefront" in name, it was a full reboot unrelated to the first game
I honestly don't think I'd like it. The 1st version is much better
Oh my gosh... I love these documentary type style on video games!! Definitely a guilty pleasure to watch before bed!!
The lighting looks pretty good in this game.
i used to love playing this game then i lent it to a friend when i had no internet and never got it back, his dad played it 24/7
I personally played the crap out of Homefront the revolution. I loved it, at least 60 hours into that game.
Frontlines most underrated game. Way ahead of its time.
I so badly wish homefront and spec ops the line took off more than they did they were sooo good
they're both great ideas with flawed execution
@@echodelta2172 wrong spec ops was a great game what are u saying rn
You’ve come back with another banger.
My dad's favorite MP was on the first Homefront. RIP pops, cben830 if his buddies happen to see this video and, moreover, this comment. Y'all meant a lot to him in his gaming.
I bet he'd still be playing it. I still am. Sry for your loss, btw man.
I really appreciate your unique voice/tone, it's so easy to listen to 👍
I loved many THQ games as a kid, WWE Homefront Saints row I was so shocked when I saw that they got closed.
this truly is the best channel on youtube, I wish it had more content to enjoy
me: "30 minutes? what're they gonna do just play the story from the first game?!"
This channel is awesome! So glad I found it!
Also, I loved Homefront the revolution. Picked it up for £3 on an XB sale and it can be a really immersive FPS game.
I played the alpha waaaay back on the 360 and absolutely loved their multiplayer. This game was awesome!
For anyone that doesn’t know, you can still play online on PC, very small numbers, but still there, I just got it for (not a bot or a sales pitch, just not worth the $20 on steam lol) $1.98 on that G2A site to relive some nostalgia - was worth it honestly, I just wish this game would pick up traction again :(((
Now that you’ve done Homefront, you have to do TimeSplitters!
It's time to split!
YES
I really hope that series makes a comeback One day.

”right...What ever”
”Outch, That’s not cool man”
”I’ll get the next One”
That is so good. The narration is top notch. I always enjoy.
I’ll always remember the mission where you hide under all the bodies and then you get up out of it ready to wage war
I don't remember this game having a rise at all.
My thoughts exactly
70.
Another great piece of video game history! Thanks a lot, guys.
And congratulations
The Multi-player was the best part of Homefront even if the story was short
Home front 1 had amazing multiplayer when it came out. Very fun the story was short but fun too.
Another GREAT video. You guys are the best
I wish they never removed the mission where you protect a baby in a trash can. I wanted to leave it there
Was there such a mission?
@@NostalgicGamerRickOShay yeah they removed it from the game before release because of public backlash.
@@dylhas1 And we're talking about the original game, not the reboot, right?
Amazing content as usual guys! such a underated channel, criminal considering how many people love gaming!
I remember buying the homefront 2011 as a precursor to prep myself for battlefield 3
Genuinely surprised there was no mention of the absolutely KILLER soundtrack featuring some amazing covers from top-tier metal bands.
Personally, I enjoyed Homefront: The Revolution a lot. If you get the game on sale with all the DLC, I would highly recommend it!
It's a really awesome series (both games), definitely underrated. The second one has some room for improvement (although I think all of the technical issues have been resolved by now). Really heartbroken that there have not been any updates or re-releases since 2017. I really hope they reboot this again in the near future.
This game came so close to perfection, but never had a chance with COD and Battlefield in the same market. Such a shame.
It was never "close", to begin with.
The story lacked the scale of MW2 and BF3, and the multiplayer was downright awfull.
@@Orcawhale1 Not to mention the gunplay being actual dogshit. Rarely have I played a first person shooter with that little feedback on what you're doing.
@@Orcawhale1 I didn't care for the MW trilogy's story tbh. Had a few cool characters and some sick missions though.
Why did TH-cam wait 10 days to recommend this to me? I love GVMERS videos
I remember in 8th grade being so hoped for the first game but feeling totally meh. The occupied America setting felt scary and real but the story was extremely short
Homefronts multiplayer mode was straight fire. Pure chaos with the kinda broken score streak system.
It did white phosphorus before Spec Ops The Line and predicted Kim Jon Un's ascension before anyone else. Highly underrated.
Except that white phosphorous scene was handled with the subtlety and delicacy of an atom bomb and predicting a death is nothing new at all. Spec Ops however is fantastic, that's for certain.
Love this channel and videos, keep em coming
I look forward to the rise and fall of Army of two!!
Working in the gaming industry must be so frustrating. Management is generally incompetent to the needs of the industry and the employees in their respective fields but that gap seems absolutely MASSIVE in particular to the game industry
I couldn’t tell you how many hours of Desert Combat I played in my life 😂
spec ops the line did the whole a realstic outlook of battle then homefront or another game
It's a shame how linear 6-8 shooters seem to be a thing of the past now.
@@InfernalMonsoon man, put timesplitters on this list. Miss the trilogy
