  • Do you hear a clicking coming from the top of the engine? This Exmark zero turn has had flywheel magnets come off of the flywheel. It causes a clicking noise as the magnet is moving around loose on the inside of the flywheel.

Thank you for this painstaking task I have done this as well but I have learned that you must know what the polarity of each magnet is and install it and it’s correct position or it won’t charge or it will under charge great video!

I just checked the same engine for a friend. Doesn't seem to be charging the battery. Took cover off and saw small pieces of magnet. Now I know what to look for. Thanks.

I had a Kohler Command Pro 22hp that all the Magnets had come off and attach themselves to the Stator. The Glue breaks down over time and looses it's adhesion. Taryl Fixes All had a great Video on the best way to reattach them and it charges well now.

I fit different circumference magnets to my KLT 250 rotor ( unavailable)
By cutting into two some Ohnan magnets to get proper clearance.
Runs in hot engine oil. Got over 100 miles since repairing and working as ne.😊

Most likely just age and the glue breaking down.

Very true. It’s also from people removing the fly wheel without the proper puller and just beating on it with a hammer

No it's not age, mine just did it with less than 40 hrs, my dealer said it's common on these engines and he replaces the flywheel.

What causes the magnets to come off of a 22 hp briggs and stratton engine

  • @craftsman1598

I was just looking at your flywheel. Your teeth looks a little chewed. Almost as if the bendix gear is hitting the flywheel when ya hit the keyswitch. I do know this much, If you even hit that flywheel with even a light to medium tap with a hammer, it is the blunt force that creates a vibration where it causes the magnets to break loose from that sudden shock to the flywheel. What I was wondering is if your starter motor is just sitting to close to the flywheel causing the bendix to hit right on the flywheel gear teeth. It is the exact thing that happened to my 25hp Kohler command pro on my Exmark Lazer Z 60 cut" If you get yourself a real thin washer and shim the starter out. It will stop that bendix from hitting it so hard. shiming that out just a tad will make the bendix gear to try to find its way more into the flywheels teeth rather than hitting right on one of the teeth. Best thing I found is some thin aluminum flashing that people put on a roof to use as a shim or even just an old credit card to evenly spread a real thin layer of that JB weld over the two spots where the starter motor bolts to the engine block. Like I said, Just a whisper to give it a little better clearance. People using these junk china starters is one thing that really causes this or someone putting on a rebuilt starter with a new china bendix gear on it that was not made correctly could cause this.

wondering if this could be my problem. sometimes when i start my kawasaki 850v efi on my exmark it'll click/ rattle for a little bit then suddenly goes away. sometimes i hear it when it revs up to start the pto but mostly when its started. put a new starter on kawasaki part and it still does it.

This is the brand engine made for the quest series exclusively. Exmark branded engine. Not a Kohler or Kawasaki.

Could you please put the sound you're hearing in your videos before you show the fix. It would help people looking to identify a potentially same issue.
