Hi Ahmed! You're welcome! We put a lot of time and effort in this video and we're glad that it was of use to you. Have fun on the water, paddle safe! Best regards, Dimitri
Having quickly watched your instructional video, I have a few comments to some of your manoeuvres. My direct feedback is often misunderstood. I appreciate what you do, and you reach a lot of paddlers. Hence, whatever you think about my comments, keep up the good work! Without further ado, here are my quick and preliminary comments: Sculling draw: • Use your torso rather than just your arms. It is common to use just one's arms, but it is incorrect. (Remember to maintain the paddler's box.) • Keep your paddle shaft more vertical in the water. • Remember to maintain the same blade angle when moving your paddle blade backwards and forwards in the water. Bow draw: • Immerse the entire steering blade in the water. • The angle of the steering blade to the kayak should be less than 45 degrees. • The angle of the shaft to the water should be about 45 degrees. • You make an excellent viewing window, but would benefit from a slighly higher upper hand. • Edge your kayak more markedly on the opposite side of where you are going. • Use a complete/full sweep stroke from bow to stern on the opposite side of where you are turning, and maintain the same edge throghout the turn. 360 • Do not change your edge from one side to the other before you have set up (i.e. rotated your torso) to the other side. Otherwise, you will lose a lot of the kayak's turning momentum. • Your reverse sweep is close to superb, but you could benefit from a sharper and longer forward sweep stroke. Cross-bow rudder • Keep your top arm closer to your body (to prevent injuries in case you e.g. hit something in the water) Cowboy (scramble): • Why not use the cowgirl, which is much faster than the cowboy? Or even a re-entry and roll? • Many paddlers prefer to keep their spray skirt handle in their mouth to avoid getting stuck on the back deck while moving forward and make it easier to reattach the spray skirt when you are safely seated in the cockpit. • Many instructors would recommend using one's thighs to push your body forward instead of your arms, i.e. move your knees forward, press them against the kayak, and push yourself forward using your legs rather than your arms. • Keep your body lower while pushing forward across the back deck. Use your paddle to brace and for stability. Sideslip (or equivalently, a hanging draw): • Move your blade in the water a few centimetres back to move your kayak more sideways while moving forward. • Why not edge your boat into the stroke and use a high brace turn angle on your blade when doing the hanging draw? This would make your kayak move much more pronouced sideways while going forward. Low brace: Instructors typically recommend looking down on the side where you immerse your blade.
Hi Karl, Your feed-back is much appreciated. It is certainly not misunderstood. I will read it a few times and see to improve myself with your feed-back. We always strive to perfection, so I will take your comment into account. However, you must know that we never took one class or lesson from anyone. When I started sea kayaking, there wasn't much to do over here in Belgium. So I did everything by trail and error. It's good to get some well-meant criticism! So thanks! Cheers, Dimitri
NORTHSEAKAYAK You are an excellent paddler, and you make great videos. My comments were not meant as criticism, but rather ideas for possible improvements. Warm paddling regards KJH
I had to do the same for years when I started in 2000. I didn't have access to anyone to teach me at a higher level so I read books and watch what videos were on DVD at the time. There really was nothing on the internet yet. There wasn't much video, but I found some old Greenland vids and older sea kayak videos. I eventually took an ACA instructor course and got my level 4 open ocean in 2003. I think the video analysis is really the best thing to do.I have hundred of hours of vide. Most of my video today is so that I can learn and get better. What I did was to place the camera on a dock and an object in the background. Then you can see if you are performing correctly by having stationary object and camera on dock. The pattern from what I remember was forward stroke to camera into a low brace, followed by forward /reverse sweeps both sides, draws and sculling draw, low brace, high brace, roll, paddle backwards, etc. I learned that all strokes have 5 parts: shaft angle to water, torso rotation, hand positions, boat position, and blade. If you are not using all 5 then you might be missing a component. I would argue there is two more highly critical and that is knee position and active foot with hip / torso rotation. Most people turn at their stomach thinking that is torso rotation, but technically you want to feel your hips move including moving your butt on the seat left and right. Your foot will press, dropping your knee and this will push your hip and rotate the whole upper body. Instead of pushing / pulling with arms think about moving the blade by using your feet to rotate your core. This makes you more powerful driving the boat with leg and hip power.
Dimitri, you are a superb paddler! Great videos, great rough water skills! I, too, am self taught and learned adjustments to my technique from extremely seasoned coaches with a very non-prescriptive approach. With bow draw, I just want to add to not extend the active blade arm but bend it to maybe 110 or so degrees. Upper hand forehead level. Boost the turn with torso rotation towards the active blade. Achieve the active blade angle with torso rotation, not by cocking up the wrist. With hanging draw and stern rudder, emphasize torso rotation towards the active blade. This video is 2 years old, by now you’re probably doing everything right. Cheers!
Still waiting for Seal Inlander spray skirt. Studying this lesson particularly. Video cam (Van Top) mounted on stem and stern...Greenland paddle cedar..reinforced with fiberglass. Will post link of first vlog (inspired by Northseakayak of course). Rock on..I'll be along shortly. Mike

Absolutely awesome! Thanks for the instruction. I've a surfski and sure could use these techniques if they translate well to a craft w/rudder, especially getting my beam side turned quickly against a pounding wind swell.

Thanks for the compliments, have fun, the learning-proces is great! And remember, the se kayaker that never capsizes...... isn't pushing his/her limits, so don't be afraid of making mistakes.👍👌😀
Dimitri, you are a true kayak whisperer! One of the best and most inspiring videos I've ever seen! I didn't think one could do such complex maneuvers in such a long kayak. I am a new owner of a Solstice GT. Do you think I could develop such maneuvers using such a kayak? I also own an Eddyline Skylark (12 footer), and I probably would start practicing on that one!
Hi there! Thank you so much for your compliments, much appreciated! Good to hear that you're the proud owner of a true sea kayak. I think the Solstice has a little less rocker than the boat I use. That's not a bad thing, it means that's a bit less agile but keeps better on track. You can however do all the displayed manouvres with your kayak to. The only difference will be that every kayak responds different. Train it a lot, don't forget to edge or lean (huge difference between the two). When not edging you will have a lot more trouble changing direction. I wish you all the best, it's lots of fun, believe me! :-) Cheers, Dimitri
I just bought a Valley Nordkapp that will probably allow me to practice these maneuvers much better. It's been now a little more than a full year since I started kayaking and I got my first rolls under my belt on December 2nd. It felt like such an achievement, and on the first day that I tried them! I did them in an Epic 18X which I have since sold (I couldn't control it in rough seas).
Just amazed about the techniques, great clip, showing what you can do with that long kayak and so versatile...didnt believe that before when I tried one. much more features on theese then sitontop ones?
Thank you Erik! Yes, we started 12 years ago with sit on top sea kayaks and I must say that a classic sea kayak offers more possibilities. You can put it on edge or lean with it making sharper turns. Have a try! Cheers! 👌👍😊
Bonjour Dimitri. Superbe vidéo tellement inspirant. tout ses manœuvres fait avec tellement de grâce Wow ! Superb video so inspiring. all his maneuvers done with so much grace Wow! Is your kayak made of Lightweight Kevlar / Carbon Infusion at 20kg or Kevlar / Diolen? Thanks André
Hi Andre, thanks for the nice compliment! This is the expedition kevlar-carbon lay-up, the weight of this boat is exactly 30kgs. Heavy, but rock solid and stiff. I switched recently to expedition kevlar-carbon infusion lay-up bringing the weight down to less than 25kgs. Same stiffnes, solid but lighter and more expensive. I have just wrote a review on this, it will appear in The next issue of The PADDLER magazine. Keep an eye out if you want more details. All the best!!😊👌
Thank you! Yes, I know that it is good practice to keep everything "inside the box" when doing manouvers. But for certain things you have to do it that way... "don't be religous about the box" - Top tips for Coaches, Plas y Brenin. ;-) Cheers, Dimitri
Dear Dimitri, I agree with you. I just want to point out that it is possible to perform lateral displacement maneuvers by lowering the upper hand, we will lose some leverage, but the shoulder will be safer. And for the bow rudder, supporting the upper hand on the shoulder of the inner side of the turn, we will also be able to lower the elbow. They are small adjustments that perhaps reduce the efficiency of the maneuver, but protect old joints like mine. Regards, Martín.
I just came across this. So many lessons are verbal explanations accompanying a video. This was simply visual poetry that not only makes sense but inspires one to try these maneuvers. 🙏

This is a truly inspiring video. Thank you so much for making it.
Thank you for watching and taking the time to write a comment! We're glad that you made use of our video. Have fun on the water! All the best, Dimitri
Good night!! I watched a video of you and I never stopped in the holidays I'm looking for new videos I turned your fan I have curiosities of your equipment If you can answer me I'll be very grateful first curiosity., Which is your kayake, I would very much like to have an equal, your clothes and perfect I had only seen it in movies and his vest with all kinds of safety equipment also work safely I am a lifeguard of swimming pools I have a closed kayake of only 3.00 meters long to paddle in the rivers of Brazil.
Excellent Demo....Thanks..... Gotta Go!!!! Gotta Start practicing
Thank you Jim! Best of luck and enjoy it!😊👌
Depois de muito analisar e praticar essas técnicas, consegui fazer o rolamento! Grato por compartilhar!
very nice choice of music with the smooth moves, even if it wasn't teaching something it would remain pretty relaxing to watch.
What a nice compliment, thank you!👌😊
Been paddling for a week now. Favorite so far is the sculling draw. Learned some cool ideas from this video
Great to hear you started kayaking, and that you find use in our videos! Cheers to that!😊💦👌
what a great display, very inspirational. Thanks for sharing
You're welcome! Thank you for watching, cheers! Dimitri
So graceful and effective. If I try these things I only produce noise and come to an immediate stop. It's nice to see what I can work towards.
Thank you Jonathan! Try to edge or lean the kayak with your knees or body. Mostly it is the lack to that which hinders the movement you try to do with your paddle. Enjoy!😊👌
This was absolutely a joy to watch!!
Much appreciated, thanks for watching!😊👌💦
Gewoon ZEN met je boot! Prachtig!!! Bedankt om die ervaring te delen…
Graag gedaan Andre, en dank om een reactie achter te laten! :-)
Bravo Dimitri. Greetings from lefkada island Greece.
Thank you so much! Cheers, Dimitri
What a beautiful kayak. And great skills!
Yes it is, I'm very proud of my boat. P&H let's you chose all the colors and other details, it's really custom made. Thanks for the compliments, and for watching! Cheers, Dimitri
Love it when someone has the skill to make it effortless
I'm blushing! ;-) Thank you for the compliment and for watching our video! Cheers, Dimitri
That made me chuckle! I do get the same for running occasionally!
out takes?
Sweet video, Dimitri! Great video angles and a lot of smooth, lovely strokes.
Thanks Moulton! I have my wife to thank for, she made the different angles possible. We are hoping to share our knowledge and skills with other people via these videos. Cheers, Dimitri
Very, very nicely done! Lovely video editing and most appropriate, non intrusive music. Thank you for demonstrating so clearly these advanced manoeuvres. I'm off down to the local lake to start perfecting mine!
Glad it is usefull to you, nice to get such feedback. Have fun! Cheers 😊👍👌
Went Kayaking for the first time today and watching this video 🙃
Enjoy the ride!!👌😊
Excellent video, beautiful kayak and beautiful music !!
Thank you for watching Pablo! Have fun on the water! Best regards! Dimitri
Forgive me, just today, I saw your answer. Thanks!
Just Fantastic to watch-hope to learn some.
Thank you! You will! Even the learning process is great fun and rewarding. 👌💦👍
Great video, thanks for sharing on youtube brother!
You're welcome Peter, glad you enjoyed it!👌😊
What a beautiful technique !
Thank you Jean-Luc! Cheers, Dimitri
Very graceful Dimitri, you could make a natural transfer to open canoes, all those strokes are compatible.
I consider myself a not so decent kayaker and this video is on some forth dimensional shit! It'll take thousands of views before I can crack the first 30 seconds! It makes for a good sleep inhibitor. Total Zen! Thank you.
Hi Josie! We hope it helps you in becoming a better paddler. Top tip: watch the difference between edging and leaning the kayak, this is super important. Best of luck!
I enjoyed this video very much, thank you! Show us your high brace turn!!! The music and videography, and you paddling all really sweet, good stuff.
Thank you so much for your possitive comments! Paddle safe and have fun!! Cheers, Dimitri
This one's music came from the Rainbow Six video game (Vegas - The Trainyard), and I thank my wife Sylvie for filming from the side to get the extra perspectives.
Dimitri I have just come across your video and wanted to say, great job. I am certainty going to be trying the techniques you demonstrated, and made look pathetically easy - which I’m certain they are not.
Thanks for your output and look forward to checking out more insightful tutorials.
Hi there, you're welcome! Glad you find our video usefull! Looking forward to hear how it goes. Have fun, and don't forget: it is all in the details. 😊💦👌
Lovely smooth skills, that's really inspiring thanks. I have been spending a lot of time in a surfski of late which is a blast but wanted something to renew the joy of being at one with a sea kayak. This is a wonderful video and it looks like you inspire many others, chapeau!
Thank you for the nice compliment! I tried a surf ski once but it is a long time ago. Closest thing to a surf ski I have now is my fast sea kayak (still not the same, but has more storage options). Have fun out there, be safe! Cheers!👌😊
incredibly awesome and inspiring! Thanks
You're welcome! Glad you like it, have fun!😊👌
This is amazing. Making it look easy.
Cheers Otto! 💪😊
Yes, awesome video. Very helpful and fun to watch!
Thank you Bob! Cheers, Dimitri
Great vid and love the boat .
Cheers Paddledog!😊👌
Gracias por esta master class. Eres el número 1.
Hi Javier, Glad you like it, thank you for the compliments! Cheers, Dimitri
Good show, Dimitri! I really like watching your vids.
Thank you Logan! Always nice to get some feed-back from our viewers! Cheers! Dimitri
...but it looks like he is about 35 years old with a minimum of 60 years paddling experience ;)
You're very good at estimating ages! ;-) Luckely you didn't think I was 60 years old !! :-D Thanks for the compliment! Cheers, Dimitri
I really have been enjoying testing the edging as I paddle. Its good to know the limit of what kayak your in.
Good to hear! You really feel the effect when edging (or leaning) as the hull changes shape and reacts different to the water.
Hypnotic! Well done excellent
Thank you for watching and commenting!! Glad you like it! Cheers, Dimitri
Well done. When learning the sculling draw we were taught to turn to face our work....
Yes, indeed you can look into the direction you're going or to the blade in the water. Thanks for watching, cheers! Dimitri
Fantastic video, definitely subscribing!
Thank you! Dimitri
Beautiful video🤙
Thank you Marco!😊👍
Very educational! Thank for sharing it! :)
You're welcome and thanks for the nice compliment!
Absolutely beautiful. Prachtig! Thanks for sharing, van Australie
Thank you for the compliments Patrick! Much appreciated, and glad you like it! Cheers, from the other side of the globe! Dimitri
He makes the movements look so fluid and beautiful
Thank you Peter!😊👌
I love your videos. Well made, good subjects and nicely demonstrated.
Thank you so much! It's good to know that other kayakers appreciate what we are doing. Cheers, Dimitri
Great video! Thank you.
You're welcome, glad you like it! :-) Cheers, Dimitri
NORTHSEAKAYAK I have a Delta 12.10 from British Columbia. It’s a beast on the open seas and handles everything with ease.
thank u so much a really learned alot of manouvers thats i need it thank u so much for making it
Hi Ahmed! You're welcome! We put a lot of time and effort in this video and we're glad that it was of use to you. Have fun on the water, paddle safe! Best regards, Dimitri
Good!!!. It's so fine to see. Greetings from zurichsee 😉. Maike
Thank you for watching ! Have fun on the water! Cheers, Dimitri
Having quickly watched your instructional video, I have a few comments to some of your manoeuvres.
My direct feedback is often misunderstood. I appreciate what you do, and you reach a lot of paddlers. Hence, whatever you think about my comments, keep up the good work!
Without further ado, here are my quick and preliminary comments:
Sculling draw:
• Use your torso rather than just your arms. It is common to use just one's arms, but it is incorrect. (Remember to maintain the paddler's box.)
• Keep your paddle shaft more vertical in the water.
• Remember to maintain the same blade angle when moving your paddle blade backwards and forwards in the water.
Bow draw:
• Immerse the entire steering blade in the water.
360
• Do not change your edge from one side to the other before you have set up (i.e. rotated your torso) to the other side. Otherwise, you will lose a lot of the kayak's turning momentum.
• Your reverse sweep is close to superb, but you could benefit from a sharper and longer forward sweep stroke.
Cross-bow rudder
• Keep your top arm closer to your body (to prevent injuries in case you e.g. hit something in the water)
Cowboy (scramble):
• Why not use the cowgirl, which is much faster than the cowboy? Or even a re-entry and roll?
• Many paddlers prefer to keep their spray skirt handle in their mouth to avoid getting stuck on the back deck while moving forward and make it easier to reattach the spray skirt when you are safely seated in the cockpit.
• Many instructors would recommend using one's thighs to push your body forward instead of your arms, i.e. move your knees forward, press them against the kayak, and push yourself forward using your legs rather than your arms.
• Keep your body lower while pushing forward across the back deck. Use your paddle to brace and for stability.
Sideslip (or equivalently, a hanging draw):
• Move your blade in the water a few centimetres back to move your kayak more sideways while moving forward.
• Why not edge your boat into the stroke and use a high brace turn angle on your blade when doing the hanging draw? This would make your kayak move much more pronouced sideways while going forward.
Low brace:
Instructors typically recommend looking down on the side where you immerse your blade.
Cheers!
Smooth Dimitri, real smooth! Enjoy watching your videos mate ;-)
Thank you very much! Glad you like our videos. We do our best! ;-) Cheers, Dimitri
Wonderful moves! 👍👍
Mike
Hi there, great to hear. Looking forward to your vlog! Have fun!😊👍👌
I've watched this video multiple times and learnt quite a lot from it. Is there any chance for a sequel? :)
Glad to hear that, fellow paddler! :-) We are planning another video regarding the use of the day hatch, and the equipment that you should put in it, but that going to be after the summer I think. Thanks for your support, spread the word! All the best! Dimitri
Just bought my first sea kayak and these are the videos iv being looking for! Thank you 👍👍👍
just subbed after meeting you on fb page (churche of the dbl bladed paddle)...enjoying your videos so far...also going to pick me up a brand new scorpio mkII LV in 2 weeks :) - then time to practice all these techniques :)
Thank you for the compliment. I'm very sure that you will enjoy this boat, we sure did. Fast and rocksolid, especially for a polyethyene boat. Have fun with it! All the best! Dimitri
Absolutely awesome! Thanks for the instruction. I've a surfski and sure could use these techniques if they translate well to a craft w/rudder, especially getting my beam side turned quickly against a pounding wind swell.
Hi Jonny, glad it was usefull to you. I like the way a surfski behaves in following seas, have you seen my most recent video "The Run 2"? Must look familiar to you as this sea kayak is based on a surf ski. Cheers!😊💦👌
Good high brace at 3:40..That hip flick is key...
Thank you, and yes indeed, needs some hip work!😊👌
@@Northseakayak yours is great. It is hard for newbies to get it…
@@PNdebt-hc2tg maybe have a look at our video "Breathe Air". There you can see how we start training new people to rolling. Same drill, and you can train and improve your hip movement even on dry land. Hope this helps? Best of luck!👌😊
I am going to practice the maneuvers.what a cool boat bro. Very sharp and looks I credibly fast. At one point I thought I was seeing surf ski speeds in this video
Thank you, and have fun during training! This will pay of, more skills equals more fun! 😀😊👌👍
a lot to learn! Nice vid!
Thanks for the compliments, have fun, the learning-proces is great! And remember, the se kayaker that never capsizes...... isn't pushing his/her limits, so don't be afraid of making mistakes.👍👌😀
NORTHSEAKAYAK thanks for the advice, i’ll keep it in mind!
Good job dude 👍👌
Thank you!!😊
Great learning vid once again, make it look so easy 👌🏽
Thank you so much for the nice compliment, we do our best! :-) Cheers, Dimitri
Omg this is so inspiring. Also what is the music used it perfect for the video
Thank you! Music from the video game Rainbow Six Las Vegas. Song The Trainyard.
Advanced Manoeuvres. Beautiful. Great skills. Who’s music? please. Cheers
@@tombowers3736 thank you! Music is from the video game Rainbow Six Las Vegas, song The Trainyard.
Wow! And thank you.
You're welcome James, glad you like it!👌😊
I prefer stern rudder because you can do it at the end of a stroke. meaning you can stear with out much drag
True, during our courses we explain when to use which rudder exactly. Stern rudder is our preferred choice when surfing for example.
Have a try! Cheers! 👌👍😊
@@Northseakayak Is there a hybrid?
Haha, no! The closest thing would be a sit on top with knee straps were you can control it via that way.😊👌👍😉
@@Northseakayak yeah. seen those straps hehe
@@Northseakayak another question. how much package can you load on these?
Bonjour Dimitri. Superbe vidéo tellement inspirant. tout ses manœuvres fait avec tellement de grâce Wow ! Est ce que ton kayak est de fabrication Lightweight Kevlar/Carbon Infusion à 20kg ou un kevlar/ diolen? Merci André
Hello Dimitri.
Great overview, thanks.
What's the music btw?
Thank you ! The music is "The Trainyard" from the game Rainbow Six Las Vegas 2. :-)
great stuff
Thank you and enjoy the water!
Can't wait to try your tips whit my new scorpio thanks for that great vidéo and what is the song plz?
Congratulations with the new ship !!! Which color did you choose? The song is from the Rainbow Six videogame, called "The Trainyard".
@@Northseakayak green lezard
@@elvispaquette8762 flashy! Good choice!!👌😁
Excellent video, but what about not having the elbow above the height of the shoulder joint?
Regards, Martín.
compliments I really like this video
fine techniques and beautiful movie
Means a lot to us that you like it, thanks for watching and commenting! Cheers, Dimitri
