    It just makes sense to become a unit with the kayak. I love being out in waves, makes me feel alive! I'm still in need more experience, but your videos are a huge help. Thank you.

    Fantastic, I thought I was a competent Greenland kayaker until I saw this. These techniques have been transformational, thanks.

    It works! I've seen your videos and joined the club. I made my own sea qajaq and Greenland paddle. Skin on frame. I'm 6' 1" and so my Qajaq is 18' 3" Some friends thought it should be hard to roll but once I got the roll down it was, as you said, more about body movement and position and less about using the paddle. I feel that, for me, the Greenland paddle is superior to the euro paddle and I never had problems keeping up with Euro paddlers. They aren't any faster and the aren't as relaxed as I can be. Thanks for the content! I have learned a lot from your free videos...just watching you move has taught me a lot.

      Mike, can I ask what wood you made your paddle out of? And did you copy an existing one? I took native art in school and carved and painted paddles. I still have my knives and would love to carve a greenland paddle to use in my kayak.
      Cheers eh!

      I searched through the cedar 2x4's until I found one that is vertically grained and used a pattern I got from Cape falcon. Here is a link to his videos about Greenland paddle making: th-cam.com/users/results?search_query=cape+falcon+kayak+greenland+paddle @@merccrewlcab2385

    Do you ever use a paddle-leash with a Greenland paddle? If not, do you ever lose it in rough water?

    • @DancingWithTheSea
      @DancingWithTheSea  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. I don't think I would want something tied to my paddle in rough water especially. I have a spare I can quickly grab if needed.

      A leash is cheap insurance. Only reason I can think of where you may *consider* not using a leash is in a sketchy beach landing in big surf.

    i've almost completed my first year of paddling and have learned a lot. Your videos have been invaluable. Now that the water is warming up I can't wait to take some instruction and learn how to roll. I have challenges with four places in my pelvis with metal. But I can't wait to see how it goes. Can't wait until I can make my log like kayak feel nimble like you speak of.

    Thanks Paolo. I thought I would need yoga to complete the roll but your technique seems really doable for tight people as me

    I want to learn this stuff but after years of paddling with no back issues, this summer I have started to get numbness in my left leg. I used to be able to paddle for 4 and 5 hours at a time. Now I can go an hour max and I have to constantly shift to keep the numbness from being unbearable.

    It's a sad experience for me knowing my kayak isn't made for edging. I have the Polish produced Wig Rapid 522 and the salesperson (also experienced kayaker) . He says it's very very hard to edge with my kayak, so despite paddling since last summer I have never been able to test this. The rudder with the kayak works good, but when it's not working I have to use my paddle to do the steering, and it slows it down. I love the kayak! but not be able to even test edging is a minus. Paulo, do you think you could edge with the Rapid 522? Thank you for your video as always! :)

    • @mikekennedy2965
      @mikekennedy2965 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hello fellow Kayaker. I checked out a video of the Wig Rapid 522. It looks like you definitely can edge. Keep trying it is an important part of kayaking. In the video the person was using a Greenland paddle to roll just like any sea kayak. Don't be discouraged you will get it.

    • @walter9236
      @walter9236 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hav tried it with the WIG 440 Cayman. It is a shorter version of almost the same hull shape. If you pull up rudder and skeg and edge it enough, combined with a little foreward stroke it does turn quite well. So I think the Rapid 522 will too. By the way I use a greenland paddle too.

      @@mikekennedy2965 I will have to try this out next summer when the water is warmer again. Thanks for your message on this! I also use the Greenland paddle and it's the only paddle I use (so far) .

      Agree. Look carefully at 5:17. He’s twisting at the waist then leaning back-instead of leaning to one side like he does at 6:18. So it could be clearer. Plus, he wants you to buy his guide, so… 😅
