I just ordered a U5! Thanks to you and Lobster for doing great demos on them. I had a V7 5 string but it was too heavy at 10 3/4 lbs. I have played only 5 strings for the last 15 years and have been playing bass guitar for 53 years. Thanks for a great review.
This bass seems really nice, but thanks for setting me straight, here. I'll stop drooling. 😂 I play a cheap old shortscale, and I already ordered a Sire P7 which should arrive hopefully within the next few months. 😅

Follow-up: I did get one and love it immensely. The tonal range, the lightness and playability. No fret buzz on low E, I can bend notes and use vibrato. The only negative is it is very top-heavy and has significant neck dive. I’d like to see a headless version to minimize this dive.

I love Sire bases ! I'm o my 4th one, a trans-black V9, and the look and the sound of it is off the chain! But somehow, this really fly U5 that was reviewed here just didn't sound right at all. I don't know if it was the signal chain or what but it was mad muffled. I've seen plenty of Bully the Kid's reviews going back to the SX basses to the white Sire P7 ( That was crazy funky! ) It's all good though, Keep rockin' brotha! God-bless!
Maybe it was the recording, amp or my ear buds not as much low mids as I was hoping 150 to 250hz. Beautiful bass. Maybe install an active preamp would help. I like short scale for the punchy mids and looser string tension.

I would have loved to hear the bass with normal length string with the string-through-body option. Because either the G-string is out of tune or it gets out of tune while playing (on “loose” strings this can happen fast). I think the preamp with tone control fully open does the bass no service.. for my taste it has very ugly highs and then a lot of crackling/buzzing sounds from the frets. But I guess overall the reviews are quite good so I will try one at a local shop.. but I would never buy one straight ahead even with all the reviews I’ve watched 😅
Is it even possible to manufacture a short scale bass that doesn't have neck dive? This one looked great until someone said it is neck-divy. Maybe an Ibanez? Well, those are more expensive than this one, for sure.

Perhaps a proper set-up would have helped in the evaluation. The J-bass pick-up had way too much fretboard rattle. Interesting the P-Pick-up didn't articulate that so clearly. It needs a good string and pickup height adjustment. Maybe a trussrod adjustment (can't be sure with the video). It's not doing the bass any favours.
I got one of these earlier this year and it did need a bit of work, but not too much. Had to tweak the truss rod a bit, and experiment with pick heights. Biggest change change for me was changing from the D’Addario round wounds that came on it to La Bella flats. Had been playing a Fender Jazz but was getting pain in my fretting hand and the shorter scale really helped. Thought I’d miss the Jazz bass, but I’m hooked on the the U5.
This review and Low end Lobster’s review really made me love this bass. I’m going to order this real soon no doubt! Thanks you guys.
