  • The old gods in their many shapes and sizes are as diverse as the people who worshiped them. Before the arrival of monotheism on the world stage, tribes and or other pagan kingdoms were bowing down to an entire pantheon of deities, some good, and some bad and all responsible for everything that’s happening around the world. Each of these gods has a story to tell in terms of its origins, its purpose, and its relation to its worshipers.

    The reason that we have little to no absolute knowledge of alot of pagan gods and goddesses and their roles is because Catholicism and Christianity all but wiped their respective records clean, save oral tradition.

      How about the systematic wiping out of early beliefs by Islam and Judaism. Judaism predates Christianity.

      @Olwydd I agree, all religions are nothing more than a collection of stories begged, borrowed, and stolen from those who came before. "To the victor goes the spoils", that includes those who get to pen history and religion.

Giving your fans a little extra now and then just as a treat, even if you can't immediately make a profit from it will make for a happier and tighter-knit community in the long run. And it is easier to keep old "customers" happy than constantly trying to attract new ones. Marketing 101. :-)

    Sehkmet was an interesting choice. But my #1 on this list would have been Osiris. No underworld deity had as much of an impact on their people or later mythologies than Osiris for the Egyptians. Having studied Egyptology thoroughly, you would not believe how deep their underworld mythology goes. Another deity I would have loved to see on the list is Ereshkigal from the Sumerians. She is possibly the oldest underworld deity that we have record of. And her sister, Inanna's, journey to the underworld is one of the most important and repeated stories in history.

    Just a note: Neither Loki, nor any of his children are considered gods among the Nordic peoples. Loki is blood-brother to Odin, but is a Jotun. Furthermore, both Odin and Freyja are considered Death Gods. Freyja gets FIRST CHOICE of those slain in battle to go to Folksvang. Odin gets what she doesn't take for herself. (Hence half those slain were burned to go to Valhalla, and half were buried to go to Folksvang. Moreover, Freyja has such control over death that to win back her stolen property she was able to cause a war with 40,000 dead, then raise them as draugr to kill even more--presumably to split between her and Odin.
    I really wish you people would stop getting your information from Marvel Comics and The Vikings, and actually read the Eddas.

      Cobalt Blue Odin collected souls of Vikings running from death

    • @asatruteacher
      @asatruteacher 7 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      No. Odin doesn't collect souls. Odin sends the Valkyries out to collect souls. Odin was, and rightly so, accused of letting the lesser combatant win over the superior warrior in the Flyting of Loki. That was because he was trying to get the best warriors in their prime into Valhalla. Warriors who dedicated themselves to Odin put on the Volknot knowing that Odin would eventually betray them and they were telling him where to put the spear to kill them. (Casting a spear over part of an army was dedicated half of them to Odin).

The Morrighan is also mentioned as taking the form of an eel, as She did in her conflict with Cuchulain and Her status as a fertility goddess is debatable, land and sovereignty are more accurate descriptions of some of Her roles than fertility, though like I said, it's debatable and I don't dismiss it or presumento say that those who worship The Morrighan as a fertility goddess are wrong.

That being said, as a general comment for you or for anyone thinking of creating similar content, it isn't that hard to find out how to properly pronounce foreign names & words. Your pronunciation of Crnobog was grating on my ears.

    The one religion I've been hoping they could translate from the carvings and sculptures is the one in and around Gobekli Tepe. Thank you for another wonderful video! Oh, to have a go at you for mispronunciations... "GO!" Okay, there is my go at you for it :-)

      jaspr1999 there is this channel called ancient architects here on youtube. He states Gobekli is not a religious ruin but rather a time capsule of the survivors of the catastrophe of 11 thousand years ago. They wrote the events that lead to the destruction of everything that was.

    You do your best! And those who complain about it. Could you please write and preform a complete essay on pronounciation in a language you do not know. If you cant do it 100% perfectly you have no rite to bash on simon i mean honestly.

    “During 600 BC, it was a major source of inspiration for monotheistic religions.”
    Y’know, despite the fact that the Pentateuch had been written at least 400 years earlier, even by late-date Exodus standards.

    I think I've heard Crnobog pronounced as Churnovog, if there's an Opera or piece classical music about him then yeah, it's usually pronounced something like that.

    • @lemmypop1300
      @lemmypop1300 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It depends on the Slavic language. Eastern languages (Russian, Ukranian) pronounce it as Chernobog/h, Western ones (Polish, Czech) have similar pronounciation, while in the Southern (Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian) it's Tsrnobog.

    @TopTenz I noticed the images you used for Elrik were from the Himalayas - is he linked to Tibetan Buddhism in some way?

    • @va5307
      @va5307 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Only that Buddhists made a deal with an outsider to make him the reincarnation of Kublai Khan and the other one became the 3rd Dalai Lama. After that, it was 300 years of oppression and starvation for everyone that tried to practice their faith and most of the prayers were destroyed or rewritten to please the Buddhist way of teaching. That's what happened in Mongolia
