Flight Design F2 LSA Flight Trial

  • Flight Design has been working on a follow-on aircraft to its successful CTLS series LSA and it's called the F2-LSA. A clean-sheet design from the spinner to the tail, the new F2 is bigger, has near flawless handling and is packed with a long list of generous safety systems. A pre-production F2 model recently arrived at Flight Design USA in Woodstock, Connecticut, and Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano went over to fly it with Tom Peghini and prepared this field report video. Read the full report in the October 2020 issue of Aviation Consumer.

    Interesting that he mentioned future Part 23 certification several times.
    He’s really saying / hinting that you’re getting what amounts to a fully certified plane for the price of an LSA, which makes the price more palatable

      The Tecnam P2008 is the same way. That’s also the beauty of Rotax engines in ASTM approved versions as there is no difference internally between the certified and non-certified versions but the consumer pays less for them.

      I'm guessing it's with certification in mind as a trainer to replace cessnas and with similarly better fuel economy. Without it, just as an LSA, the price isn't competitive, I agree. That said Cubs sell for well over 200 which is a disgrace on multiple fronts.

      @@DanFrederiksen I am a bit torn on this one - Piper sells a lot of their scaled down PA-28 trainer these days (can't remember the marketing name) and they are much more expensive, and basically a three-seater. Thus with IFR certification and the Rotax 915, all of a sudden this becomes "reasonablish" (won't trade in our Cherokee 140, but alas, I also go camping and don't step down from a Bonanza...).

    Very convenient having most of the Czech LSA manufacturers at or near the same airport to discuss pricing for these things. There I said it.
    I'd hazard a guess with the investment outlay designing, testing and certifying a new airframe they'd be in a tough spot adjusting their pricing to a suit post Covid world. It will be interesting to see how far down they come.
    For my purposes I'd be going with an experimental with all the same gear, faster TAS, more carrying capacity and longer legs but far less money - but I'm not the target audience.
    Edit: I suspect the first composite manufacturer to package these beautifully moulded carbon airframes as quick build kits will be onto a winner. I would love to know why they aren't all doing this.

      I disagree. For a new plane with all those safety features, including a BRS, and the ability to upgrade to certified in the future, its a good price. The only option on the certifed side would be a used Cirrus, but the cheapest 15 year old models are still $250k+. Maybe a 172 with the BRS add-on, but that would be in the 400k+ range new.

    • @AVweb
      @AVweb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Don't shoot the messenger. Insurance pros said that in this current market as much as 10 hours might be the requirement for many LSA models, depending on the pilot. Some ages, like in any airplane, might not be insurable at all. As for transitioning, we think most competent pilots can fly the airplane successfully in fewer hours, but to really be comfortable-and that includes mastering the avionics, autopilot and doing some cross countries, night work, etc, working with an instructor for more than a basic checkout might be in order.

    • @Alex-us2vw
      @Alex-us2vw 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      AVweb weird. On my insurance for a PA30 they want 10hrs + multi rating for a non rated pilot, or just a checkout on a multi rated pilot. 10hrs seems extreme for a single engine non HP aircraft.

    the nav com needs to be swamped out for GNX375 or GNC255. VFR no need ILS, you can do RNAV LPV only with much lower price. G3x needs to be upgrade to G3x touch, otherwise the airframe is too luxury for interior

  • @crissd8283
    @crissd8283 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't get it? Why would you make a plane that is designed for training resist stall/spin? That is setting up new pilots who will most likely transition to an older 172 for a big surprise. Of anything we should train with planes that have worse stall characteristics? We don't make better pilots by making the training planes easier.

    • @onethousandtwonortheast8848
      @onethousandtwonortheast8848 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with you but the pilots of today and tomorrow pale by comparison to those of yesteryear and this is because of the cockpit; automation is a paradigm that cost doesn’t see benefit for stick and rudder basics.

    • @crissd8283
      @crissd8283 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@onethousandtwonortheast8848 I agree. I personally believe many accidents that were classified as pilot error were actually a result of too much automation. Sure the pilot should have been able to turn off the automation and hand fly but when you never practised this you loose that skill and automation is why they loose that skill.

      GPS navigation has completely wrecked greater situational awareness, side-looking radar has made immediate lane awareness crazy bad and automated transmissions have killed off young drivers' awareness of road surface condition. If the 'icing' light isn't on they are surprised when slides happen. New tech is great until you find many of your drivers woefully inept at controlling the vehicles in emergency situations.

      Wearing a mask is a no win situation. If you wear a mask you are promoting the scamdemic. If you don't wear a mask people will yell that you are killing their grandma. Let's be honest. If you are sitting that close to another person for an entire flight (probably at least and hour), you are talking the whole time, and you are touching a lot of the same controls, you are going to get whatever the other person has weither you wear a mask or not.
