  • Mercedes-Benz C-Class W206 debuts right after the new S-Class and EQS flagships. The new C-Class not only looks like a scaled down version of the S-Class, but also gets a lot of tech and switchgear from the big daddy.

I know it's the way things are going, but I really don't like the way the digital instruments aren't in anyway physically integrated in the cockpit, they look sort of tacked on. But I do think it's quite an elegant car still, externally.

W205 was very sporty and nimble with precise steering and handling. Comfort and seats were bad but on the highways, it was a very comfortable cruiser.

Let's be honest, all modern German cars are designed for leasing customers. For example, the share of leased BMWs is around 70-80%. They're technically very complicated machines, and require maintenance above and beyond what the owner's manual says. The recommended oil change intervals (Up to 30,000 km) may be fine for the duration of a typical lease of 2-3 years, but unrealistically long for anyone who intends to own the car for a long time. Neglected maintenance will cause problems in the long term, making these cars a poor choice in the used car market as well. Sure, the cars are sexy and sporty, but not good when it comes to longevity and cost of ownership.

If you really need a big car from Mercedes Benz then an E Class would do, the C is now so expensive and more compromised than ever; no amount of S Class technology can hide that.

i test drove the 1.5 petrol with 184 ps. I found the steering more numb compared to the previous gen but ride quality i think it was slightly better but not that impressive. Also i couldn't really tell the difference in acceleration, compared to my newly GLA with 1.3 petrol 163 ps.

Great review as always Marek, but I'm not a fan of this latest C-Class. Looks wise I think I prefer the previous generation- it feels like they intentionally made the exterior bland on this one so the can squeeze in another 4 door 'coupe'.
Where I live the estate/wagon isn't available, which is sad. The AMG Line has also been made standard which I hate- if I buy a luxury car is it too much to ask for it to ride luxuriously? Run flat tyres ride bad enough without taking away sidewalls.

  • @MrFlazz99

I've no issue with the turbo-takeover that sees smaller-displacement engines ruling the roost - this is long overdue and some people have been carping about it for decades - but it's time that brands like M-B and BMW stopped trying to pretend that they're still packing huge motors. Be honest - the C200 could be called C150 with a 'T' for turbo tacked on perhaps and BMW can get rid of their 340 nomenclature. At least Audi took the route of completely discarding any indication of engine size, so now we just get to guess what's under the bonnet.

Well, as a previous owner of a s205 I can’t understand your verdict at all..
Yes, maybe tech has increased over the old model, but interior quality in generell is horrible in the W206, something i missed in your review.. Steering was also precise in the old model, maybe its sligtly different, but theres not much in it

Long gone are the days when Mercedes offer luxury car ownership for the buyer. Unreliability , customer support and fit and finish like the badly fitting door on a Mercedes GLA that you tested a while back. Stick with Lexus, it is the only car brand worthy of the word "luxury". Very good review thanks.

Mercedes is bought for long haul comfort crusing not so much of outright performance with stiff uncomfortable suspension.
No reason to buy any Mercedes if it tries to emulate BMW and Audi in losing its core values which are comfort and safety .

@@MarekDrivesENG I think people buying a luxury car want people to see that they spent money for a higher class of car and making the C class look like an A class seems to blur that line. Personally I don't care what people think so it doesn't bother me but this isn't aimed at somebody like me.

I don't like my car interiors to have large digital displays all over the place. Makes them look cheap. For sure the Chinese can do digital displays just as well as the Germans. And with an efficient but really boring driveline why not buy a cheap Chinese (or Korean) EV.
