1.1 seconds covering 9 cars is usually not impressive, so some context for those not familiar with Bathurst. A one lap qualifying run that *at worst* puts you in tenth place on the grid for the race (only the top ten cars do the one lap qualifying run) is not worth throwing a car into the wall for a race that starts in well under 24 hours and that is 1000km long.

I was there on top of the Mountain the day Greg Murphy did his Lap of the Gods and I remember saying to my boys that that lap was something very special in the history of Mount Panorama but it was the way in which he did it. In a category where gaps are normally measured by hundredths and thousandths of a second he obliterated his opposition by more than a full second to the second placed car. I am a veteran of 45 visits to the 1000 and in all that time I have seen some very special moments but that lap ranks right up there with the very best of them. When Greg Murphy crossed the start/finish line that day he instantly wrote his name and the #51 K Mart Holden Commodore into Mount Panorama Bathurst folklore. A truly, Great Moment in Sport

That record breaking lap was taken from him and is not recorded even his points where taken from winning the race to . He was caught cheating with mofes he wasn't allowed to have
That just goes to show how well that team set up that car it pretty much held an insane pace the entire race that team ended up winning the race in that year and the year after
The cutaway to the bloke in the pit garage, that's John Bowe, smiling in delight seeing his time being bettered by a driver doing something amazing. It was a age for the lap record to drop further, and yeah, go back to the shot at The Dipper, and you can see the smoke off the tyre from that messed shift. Now search "Dick Johnson" and "The rock".
Murphy missed the shift into the eases before the dipper. Momentarily shifted from 4th to 1st then put it back into 3rd. You can actually hear it. He thought he’d blown the lap.
I met Johnny Bowe and he's probably the most competitive bloke I have ever met. But he's also a decent bloke. He'd have been thinking "Well he's either going to smash our time or smash that car, either way, good on him!"
To answer your second question, the car itself was chassis HRT 043, meaning the 43rd car built by the works Holden Racing Team. It raced on for a few more years before being retired and sold to a private collector, who restored it to its 2003 spec (VY Commodore panels and Kmart livery, basically). It's been sold back and forth a couple of times but it's still in the hands of some enthusiast or another, and comes out to hit the track for special occasions. I don't know who exactly the current owner is, though, and a V8sleuth subscription is $440 (per year!), which is way beyond my wallet.
That exact thought went through my head, I should’ve pointed out in my video, I was thoroughly impressed with the views and production quality for a broadcast from 2003!!! Very impressive
The thing to remember as well, Bowe, who he beat by that margin, was no slouch. I think that's what made it stunning. Bowe had been an atcc champion and was known to be pretty good at vehicle setup.
So glad you did this, thanks heaps! Most TH-camrs loose my interest when they ask you to like, comment and subscribe, but then ignore you when you do as they've asked. I mentioned this Greg Murphy Lap of the Gods a couple of videos ago and everyone wanted to see the NASCAR legend ride along and rightfully so, it's a great video. However, you managed to please all by doing both! Top job! My comments for this video are firstly, do you remember when Ambrose almost had a fight on the side of the track after his big crash (you say wreck)? That was with this New Zealand born Bathurst legend Greg Murphy, it was Ambrose versus Murphy. Murphy's lap of 2:06.8594 was groundbreaking and sorry (Google needed) I don't know exactly but I am sure it held for over ten years. Lap times are around 5+ seconds faster these days. I did put Murphy on pole position for the race which he won the next day (his 3rd Bathurst 1000 win). Greg also won the next year (his 4 and last win at Bathurst) You seemed interested in the car, I can tell you that not many know some of these details. The car has a chassis number, HRT 043 The car despite displaying number 51 was affectionately known as "Dancer 43" and already had great history as it was originally a Holden Racing Team (HRT) Commodore with Craig Lowndes as the pilot. It was an old series Commodore VT that was updated to become a VX Commodore in 2003 when it was over 3 to 5 years old. So Murphy did the Lap of the Gods (missed a gear remember) in an old car that was second hand while most had new cars. Then going on to win again not only the next day, but again the next year. HRT 043 became KRT 043 (KMart Racing Team) to some but I believe the chassis number was unchanged. Despite what everyone thinks that car was not the winning car displaying the same paint work the next day, for some reason they used its sister car HRT 044 for Greg Murphy and co-driver Rick Kelly to go on and win the race in. I can't find out much more without spending time Googling other than HRT 043 went back to Holden Racing Team as a spare car and was up for sale in 2006 but the sale fell through. It was reported to be restored to the "51 KMart" livery in 2018. Also restored to the same "51 KMart" livery was the 2003 & 2004 Bathurst winning car HRT 044 which was up for sale in 2019 for an undisclosed amount. Cars like these are extremely rare and priceless and often sold for over a million dollars. Despite this sometimes they're in retro races and driven as hard as ever. It's not impossible for retro or classic races to have a $15M dollar value for just the top 10 entrants. Add about 30% for USD. I enjoyed this and despite being a ford fan, I can still get goosebumps watching Murph (as we call him) in his Holden Commodore doing what I still call the best lap ever. Thanks for reading, comment if you did.
It's always great seeing Murph do his thing! It'll be interesting to see how he goes in the wildcard this year. I've never heard him called Kurt though...
Excellent comment with great information. Thank you for that, I appreciate you watching and engaging with me! I do my best to go through all the comments, even if it has hundreds of them. And you and others have given such good insight into the sport/culture and also great video suggestions. I have a big list of videos coming up that are mostly all videos that you viewers have all requested. I’m loving making these and learning more about Australia and most of all thankful that you guys are watching, enjoying it, and talking with me and amongst each other in the comments. Thanks again! More to come 👏🇺🇸🇦🇺👍
Even the opposing teams cheered him on, that's how it is here. Just love a good runner. It's a really stressful track to race on the edge, it's not forgiving at all and will chew the uninitiated up and crush the veterans with no mercy. You could be ahead by a mile and come unstuck in a second. It's truly a great race and very dear to our hearts
This is my favourite sporting moment of all time, all sports. What I really love about it is his achievement attitude and self evaluation. Best time ever and whilst he definitely celebrated he was thinking about how he could be even better. Amazing mindset.
I was there for THAT lap, in the Carrera Cup corporate box (my only time in that box) and this was absolutely amazing, just to be there. The noise of the crowd, even from inside the box, was absolutely amazing. Something I'll never forget.
It took quite a few years to beat that lap! The thing that stood out to me back then watching it live was the standing ovation from the other teams, even the Ford teams! That sort of thing is just so rare.
I was super lucky to travel to Australia on business from the UK for 3 weeks back in 2012 and managed to watch the V8 Supercars race around the OLYMPIC PARK in Sydney. It was mind blowing, the racing was bumper to bumper and the noise was sensational.
The amazing thing about this lap no one all weekend looked like touching a 6 Pole was predicted to be a low 8 and John Bowes lap was considered a step to high. Then Murphy came out and didn’t breath for 2 minutes and 6 seconds. It’s the first and only time everyone in pit lane have come out to congratulate a driver/car for a pole lap
That's me at 3.49, doing a happy dance. We knew it was fast, but no one knew how quick it was till the end. The ford apologists were gobsmacked and silenced. And the race win was a sweet "**** you to the officials who shafted Murf the year before. A great Bathurst memory.
The 24 hour race the same year is well worth a watch, the conditions they drive through is incredible. Murph appears again driving in one of the Monaro's, which destroyed their very expensive competition.
Nice one mate, this is one of my favourite moments in V8 Supercars. The only thing that tops this is the whole 2014 Bathurst 1000 what a race that was. But good on you for learning some of the culture.
I remember watching this back in '03. The supercars are still steel paneled and based off the same chassis (at least at the time of this vid), More recently they created a common chassis and bolted on panels to make them look like the production car. They are still steel panel and not fibre glass.
G'day matey. Just subbed and wanted to say, great videos mate very enjoyable. Craig Lowndes is another legend of the mountain, he is pretty much the modern day Peter Brock.
Seeing Americans enjoy our motor sports is actually super cool. Keep these coming! I'd be keen to see more of what you think about our racing scene! Look up Peter Brock King Of the Mountain!
Technically it has been broken, but technically it hasnt. This was done un a pre next gen cars platform using a H pattern gearbox. They moved to a sequential box and it was broken over a decade later. So the record stands in a way. But there has been a 2minute 3 since.
@@DStead2239 Thats a pretty ordinary statement in my opinion. The chance of error in a H pattern is infinitely higher than it is with a sequential. You might be right as far as the peak lap time isn't too far apart but the chance of success and getting everything perfect using a H pattern is +1 to hardness factor.
@@danielmy99 Well that's your fairly ordinary opinion. On a flying lap it makes little difference. In an endurance race sure, especially with driver fatigue. Although some drivers would actually shift less with H-pattern.
If you want to get truly technical, lets not overlook the fact that the 51 car was the only Holden running the 18 degree engine rather than the "Holden Motorsport" engine that had been mandated for the 2003 project blueprint formula.
Loving watching you do Bathurst videos!! Bathurst is my home town. I grew up there. I am living in Brisbane QLD now but get home sick all the time. When I was a teenager we would park on the side of the road up the top at skyline. We'd sit on Brock's wall and drink and look over the town. Best view. It was awesome. I loved going to the race. We would also park on the side of the highway after the race watching all the cars leaving town and waving. The good old days!
It wasn't GM that ended Holdens in Australia. It was a conservative government, who thought they could end the union movement by shutting down the motor vehicle industry. So they removed all government subsidies from the motor industry. GM had no chance to continue in Australia without the subsidies, so they were forced to withdraw.
Remember this like it was yesterday, and the record is now 2:03.3783s held by Scott McLaughlin set in 2019 for the V8 Supercars sector, however the fastest lap for any car is Christopher Mies, he set a time of 1:59.2910, on the 16th November 2018, driving a GT3-spec Audi R8 Ultra.
If you ever get a chance to drive around there you’ll see how narrow the track is. Normally this is a public road with a 35 mile per hour (60km/h) speed limit. I was fortunate enough to drive a race car around it. It’s amazing.
Yes, it's on in a wildcard entry Boost Mobile boss wanted him and Richie Stanaway back, so he has had Erebus enter a third car. Here's the Wikipedia link to the page of entries.
This race was one of the rare occasions at Bathurst where pole position ( Greg Murphy ) actually went on and won the race on sunday , Fantastic to see and a massive accomplishment onya Murph !! And this is coming from a ford fan ! 👍🤙👌
I'm not a major sports fan. I mean I'm not not, I can usually just kind of take it or leave it but Bathurst... Bathurst is something special. Always has been. I grew up in Cowra, next town up the highway. Bathurst has a place in my heart but that's not what just earned my sub, Wrocker. You did. I enjoyed the commentary, your obvious level of knowledge and your willingness to travel outside your narrative and enjoy something from Australia as much as you obviously did. Cheers, dude.
Near the Beginning of your Clip , there is a Guy , with a Black Beard , obviously in a Pit Garage watching on a Screen BIG Smile on his face . That was John Bowe ( pronounced Bow to the Audience ) . Pole-sitter until THIS ! Another Legendary Driver in this series .
Thank you for watching and comments, you guys rock! I’m gonna grind my ass off and try to get a video or 2 per day out to you guys! I have a blast making them
Having had the chance to interview Greg Murphy a few years ago, he'd like everyone to know that he didn't name it 'The Lap of the Gods'. I think he said something along the lines of 'I'm not egotistical enough to give it a name like that'. The record stood until 2010 beaten by Craig Lowndes in Practice 3 on the Friday before qualifying. The car from memory is at the National Motor Racing Museum which is right next to the track at Murray's Corner (last corner before going across the start/ finish line. And as someone else has pointed out in the comments search Jordan Cox Honda Civic if you want your mind blown on car control and overtakes on Mt Panorama.
I was fortunate enough to watch this live. Bathurst is a massive deal here. It’s like the Super Bowl of Australian Motorsport. Make sure you watch the top 10 shootout on the Saturday before settling in for hours on the Sunday
to understand just why the Mount Panorama / Bathurst circuit is so special, please react to "Mark Larkham Describes The Mount Panorama Bathurst Race Track - 2017"
Hey mate i can tell u some things about the car and others so 1 i was at this race in 2003 and seeing it live was nothing short of amazing When i talked to greg murphy about 4 years after this lap he said he drove his ass off that lap coz of the 5 min penalty he got the year before that to make up for the mistake the record stood for 7 years till craig lowndes in a vodafone holden beat it in a practice session but yea glad u enjoyed the lap
The thing to remember is that this was done in a road car that was upgraded to a race car whereas McLaughlin's breaking of the record was in a bespoke space frame racecar. And the kicker is he and his co-driver won the race as well, which has only happened 11 times in the 50+ year history of the race.
The recent faster times are on a completely resurfaced track. Much higher grip levels than 2003. So the current record has nothing to do with higher skills or a better lap.
There's a new series on TH-cam called "Supercars 101". Episode 1 is "What is a Supercar?" and it was released on Jul 1 2021. Really good explanation of the Gen 3 car. Cheers, Glenn
The lap has been beaten due to the normal evolution of the sport but nothing has ever come close to that lap. In a sport where each race is decided by tenths or thousandths of a second and then Murph smashed that lap out of nowhere was an incredible spectacle. You even said yourself that you can see he is FLYING, when you watch this lap there is no doubt in your mind that he is going mind-blowingly fast!
Just a year earlier, this same guy copped a FIVE MINUTE time penalty for causing a fuel spill during a pitstop, incase you didn’t know. There is a clip on TH-cam from the official Supercars channel of it
Drove the track in early 90s (it’s normally just a country road).....going across the top of the mountain and coming down is full on.....the race drivers have balls of steel!!!
I remember getting Greg Murphy to sign the passenger airbag in my Gen 3 powered Holden ute a year before this happened. He carried a gold pen with him all over NZ because it was such a common request at the time! Probably biggest name & most loved Kiwi driver since Denny Hulme + Bruce McLaren. That's pretty exalted company. Edit: Denny Hulme actually passed away driving at Bathurst. Went out doing what he wanted to do. Bruce McLaren died testing his car in the UK.
Fun fact for you to take into consideration: Greg was on Talkback with Leighton Smith, of NewstalkZB, a NZ radio station, taking calls. I rang and asked about the "missed gear". Greg replied, when that happened, he had grabbed 1st, and the engine overrevved to 9200rpm ! Bear in mind, they are limited to 7500rpm, so, to overrev to that extent was frightening, also hence the tyre smoke seen, as she locked-up, before Greg was able to grab 3rd. Asked if there was any damage, Greg replied, they checked the valvetrain, then went out and won the next day - with the same engine! Truly an amazing (bulletproof!) car and driver combo.
Check out the lap time board. 1 second from first to second. 9th place is 2 seconds. 8 teams thinking maybe an eighth of a second faster than the next guy is good. Or maybe good enough. They were not prepared for that. That is awesome.
John Bowe is up there with the best drivers in Australia and defiantly one of the quickest drivers around Bathurst, and Murphy shattered his time and broke the record in race trim, which just made it so much sweeter. and he held that record for many years until 2017 14YEARS
Greg Murphy was always an aggressive and emotional driver and gave 10 tenths and by the way, he is a proud Kiwi. Of course, the cars are set up for the shoot-out to a certain extent with relation to fuel load and aggressive adjustments that would not be able to be used in the actual race. Cut to the current race lap record and it is Chas Mostert who still holds that record in a Supercars- the one that is traditionally considered the 'official' lap record as it was set under race conditions - with a 2m04. 7602s time set late in the 2019 Bathurst 1000.23 Feb 2021. The fastest pole position top ten shoot-out record is Cameron Waters who shot to the top of the timesheets early with an impressive 2:03.9178s effort pushing the limits. But the fastest all-time lap of Bathurst in a superstar is by Scott McLaughlin with a rapid 2m03.772s set on a pre-race practice day for the Bathurst 1000. Outside of Supercars the fastest lap is by a Formula 1 car driven by Jensen Button in a Vodaphone promotion day where he clocked 1.48.03s however under full race conditions the fastest lap is down to Christopher Mies from Germany driving an Audi R8 Ultra were recorded a 1:59.2910 lap during the 16 November 2018 "Challenge Bathurst"sprint event.
The record has been beaten (the fastest time is now in the 2:03s), but the Lap of the Gods remains. It's special for a number of reasons. #1, it set a new qualifying record during the shootout session. If you're not familiar, the shootout is used to take the top 10 qualifying cars, and each will go out in turn and have a single lap to set their best time and finalize the first 10 grid positions. Setting a record during the shootout is not at all unheard of, but it can be harder to do with only a lap to pull it together -- any mistakes and you're going to the back. #2, it beat the next-best time by over a second. As @IWrocker says, that's not just a small margin, that's a lifetime in racing. #3, and this is the most important one, absolutely no-one saw it coming. In more recent record-breaking laps, you've been able to see from sector times across previous sessions that if the driver puts everything together, their potential-best time is xx:xx.xxxx, and with enough time they are able to execute exactly that. Friday Night Qualifying saw the first driver ever to enter the 2:07s, starting with Mark Skaife recording the first lap under a 2:08 with a 2:07.990. Going into the Saturday Top 10 session, Murphy already held the qualifying record having just set it the day before with a 2:07.950. No-one, absolutely no-one considered these cars to be capable of a 2:06, and then Murph shows up to the Top 10 and shocks himself -- even then admitting that he could have gone even faster if he hadn't flubbed the gear change. #4, it would be another 7 years before another driver bested it, and that was Craig Lowndes during the 2010 event.
I was there that year on top of the mountain.. you could tell by the way he came over the top of the track he was flllllyyyyyyiiinnnggg. I also woke up on the mountain the next day to a Mitsubishi 20ft in a tree 🤣 it gets wild
The lap record was held for 7 years. It was eclipsed by Craig Lowndes in a practice session. The track was resurfaced and the record kept getting broken. Eventually in 2017 Scott McLachlan came along with the DJR PENSKE Racing Team and posted a 2 minutes 3seconds lap which although it was fast didn't get the same time standing as Greg's lap. Both are spectacular laps because Scott found the dirt on the top of the mountain and frightened the hell out of his Team. The 6.3 kilometre road circuit doesn't have it's altitude the steepness of it truely shown on the tv. It's Australia's most favourite race track.

The camera work and production is superb. The coverage really gives you a feeling that is missing on most other race tracks.
That exact thought went through my head, I should’ve pointed out in my video, I was thoroughly impressed with the views and production quality for a broadcast from 2003!!! Very impressive
There's actually alot neat racecar broadcasting technology which came from Bathurst! I sure there's a documentary on it.
I was there in crowd near the last corner. As a Holden supporter it was amazing to experience the roar of the crowd and see that lap.
Greg also won the next year (his 4 and last win at Bathurst)
You seemed interested in the car, I can tell you that not many know some of these details.
@@jackicrane245 I meant Murph. Bloody autocorrect!!!!
More to come 👏🇺🇸🇦🇺👍
@@IWrocker what a good sort 😁
Even the opposing teams cheered him on, that's how it is here.
Just love a good runner.
It's a really stressful track to race on the edge, it's not forgiving at all and will chew the uninitiated up and crush the veterans with no mercy.
You could be ahead by a mile and come unstuck in a second.
It's truly a great race and very dear to our hearts
This is my favourite sporting moment of all time, all sports.
What I really love about it is his achievement attitude and self evaluation. Best time ever and whilst he definitely celebrated he was thinking about how he could be even better. Amazing mindset.
Jordan Cox in the improved production race at Bathurst in a honda civic is insane
Yes!!!!
Oh yes! The most insane overtakes ever at Mt Panorama
i remember turning on the telly randomly and watching that live one afternoon didnt even know what improved production was best race id ever seen
Mate I've got to say, you nailed the 'Straya pronunciation. Well done!
I remember my late father waking me up for this at 1am South African time. warm regards from Port Elizabeth, South Africa. keep up the great content
That record stood for a long time, Greg Murphy was an awesome driver back then in his prime.
This was my first time at Bathurst. Still called the great race watch it every year all day.
I remember watching this on tv live and how amazing it was. This lap along with Craig Lowndes winning after PB died are my favourite Bathurst moments.
I was super lucky to travel to Australia on business from the UK for 3 weeks back in 2012 and managed to watch the V8 Supercars race around the OLYMPIC PARK in Sydney. It was mind blowing, the racing was bumper to bumper and the noise was sensational.
The amazing thing about this lap no one all weekend looked like touching a 6
Pole was predicted to be a low 8 and John Bowes lap was considered a step to high.
Another great video from Bathurst is Dick Johnson qualifing lap from 1983.
That still gives me goosebumps.
I remember watching this back in '03.
The supercars are still steel paneled and based off the same chassis (at least at the time of this vid), More recently they created a common chassis and bolted on panels to make them look like the production car. They are still steel panel and not fibre glass.
Isnt composite material now being used for panels?
Supercars use a carbon composite material for the body panels.
I was there that day and then watched him win the race on the Sunday. Will never forget it
Technically it has been broken, but technically it hasnt.
This was done un a pre next gen cars platform using a H pattern gearbox.
They moved to a sequential box and it was broken over a decade later.
So the record stands in a way. But there has been a 2minute 3 since.
The H-pattern makes very little difference on a flying lap. Murphy's a left foot braker..
@@DStead2239 made enough of a difference that he missed a shift
I watched this live and it still gets me pumped up watching today.
Never forgotten that awesome lap plus won Bathurst that year and year after
It wasn't GM that ended Holdens in Australia. It was a conservative government, who thought they could end the union movement by shutting down the motor vehicle industry. So they removed all government subsidies from the motor industry. GM had no chance to continue in Australia without the subsidies, so they were forced to withdraw.
They have done so much damage.
Jenson Button unofficially owns the lap record. 148.8 in a McClaren Mercedes F1.
@@jimmyandtommy1 yes indeed he does, which also is why i did not include it, but still thats fast!
If you ever get a chance to drive around there you’ll see how narrow the track is. Normally this is a public road with a 35 mile per hour (60km/h) speed limit. I was fortunate enough to drive a race car around it. It’s amazing.
Thanks for appreciating our race.
Your Vids are fantastic my American Brother....love it.
Greg Murphy is making a wildcard start at Bathurst this year. They persuaded him to come out of retirement for a one off race
Are you serious? O. M. G.
He is? That’s pretty damn cool 😎
Yes, it's on in a wildcard entry Boost Mobile boss wanted him and Richie Stanaway back, so he has had Erebus enter a third car.
Here's the Wikipedia link to the page of entries.
Loving these videos!! You can hear the excitement in your voice!
Still get chills watching this... Brilliant camerawork also
So glad you did this one, this one makes me drool...even as a ford fan
Same. I'm a Ford fan and get goosebumps everytime I watch this lap by Murph. It intensifies as the lap progresses.
Never get old.
And this was the era when they were still using an 'H' pattern transmission.
this is the part of what makes it legendary
Not really, that box makes little difference to modern V8 supercars in single flying laps. Especially seeing Murphy is a left foot braker.
Great observation, that’s so crazy how he hit 1st instead of 3rd once and still set a record!
@@DStead2239 he missed a shift in this lap whereas that's kinda hard to do in a sequential. So I doubt that it makes "very little" difference.
@@HarmonizaXF Didn't do squate to his time though.
Another great video two in a day wow respect homie keep up the grind much love from down under
Thank you for watching and comments, you guys rock! I’m gonna grind my ass off and try to get a video or 2 per day out to you guys! I have a blast making them
Back in 2003 they were a lot more like production cars. Now they are basically a tube frame control chassis
Murph, at age 49, is going back to Bathurst this year! Would be funny if he managed to win again!
hello from South Australia i love your channel keep up the good vids mate
Watched it live it set off a good day !
to understand just why the Mount Panorama / Bathurst circuit is so special, please react to "Mark Larkham Describes The Mount Panorama Bathurst Race Track - 2017"
Hey mate i can tell u some things about the car and others so 1 i was at this race in 2003 and seeing it live was nothing short of amazing
When i talked to greg murphy about 4 years after this lap he said he drove his ass off that lap coz of the 5 min penalty he got the year before that to make up for the mistake the record stood for 7 years till craig lowndes in a vodafone holden beat it in a practice session but yea glad u enjoyed the lap
That car crossing the line was the screen saver on my flip phone for years lol
The thing to remember is that this was done in a road car that was upgraded to a race car whereas McLaughlin's breaking of the record was in a bespoke space frame racecar. And the kicker is he and his co-driver won the race as well, which has only happened 11 times in the 50+ year history of the race.
1:57 this is a VY Commodore, the Monaro you referenced is a VT Commodore with two doors, Not an actual Monaro. More an export prototype 👍🏽
Always love watching this lap! - a proud kiwi!
Epic memory of an epic race. Amazing to think now days that time is about race pace.
We love Americans and their nascar racing too! Aussies and yanks, are mates! Cheers!
The recent faster times are on a completely resurfaced track. Much higher grip levels than 2003. So the current record has nothing to do with higher skills or a better lap.
Kiwis rule v8 supercars....best drivers in the world bar none!
nice memories dude, thank you for that.
Love how outside of the race day the track is just your standard rual roads
The fun part of this as that the next day he had to drive 151 laps, trying to do the same lap each time
Just a year earlier, this same guy copped a FIVE MINUTE time penalty for causing a fuel spill during a pitstop, incase you didn’t know. There is a clip on TH-cam from the official Supercars channel of it
Dude noones ever cared what an American thinks. These videos show the true level of intelligence of the usa.
Bruce McLaren died testing his car in the UK.
that is a very challenging track, he done extremely good to beat that time
Fun fact for you to take into consideration:
Greg was on Talkback with Leighton Smith, of NewstalkZB, a NZ radio station, taking calls.
Remember seeing this live when I was 7!
Check out the lap time board. 1 second from first to second. 9th place is 2 seconds. 8 teams thinking maybe an eighth of a second faster than the next guy is good. Or maybe good enough. They were not prepared for that. That is awesome.
And the fact that Murph is such a super cool guy.
John Bowe is up there with the best drivers in Australia and defiantly one of the quickest drivers around Bathurst, and Murphy shattered his time and broke the record in race trim, which just made it so much sweeter. and he held that record for many years until 2017 14YEARS
I was there for this one, groundbreaking at the time
Greg Murphy was always an aggressive and emotional driver and gave 10 tenths and by the way, he is a proud Kiwi.
Outside of Supercars the fastest lap is by a Formula 1 car driven by Jensen Button in a Vodaphone promotion day where he clocked 1.48.03s however under full race conditions the fastest lap is down to
Christopher Mies from Germany driving an Audi R8 Ultra were recorded a 1:59.2910 lap during the 16 November 2018 "Challenge Bathurst"sprint event.
New Zealand 🇳🇿 dominating them Australians. Love it. He is a living legend. What a trip down memory lane.
I was already gonna subscribe then I saw the Los Pollos Hermanos shirt and it sealed the deal
I was there that year on top of the mountain.. you could tell by the way he came over the top of the track he was flllllyyyyyyiiinnnggg. I also woke up on the mountain the next day to a Mitsubishi 20ft in a tree 🤣 it gets wild
In formula 1 they say a tenth costs a million, what a drive, fantastic!
You should watch Scott McLaughlin's 2017 qualifying lap, it was the first 2:03 around the mountain. It's an absolute spectacle aswell.
Love the Murph but look up the king of the mountain... Peter Brock
