Larry Perkins... started off rallying VW Beetles, started circuit racing in Formula Vee, ended up in Formula 1, raced at Le Mans, engineered and shared driving of several of Peter Brock's Bathurst wins, flew aerobatic aircraft, designed, engineered and did most of the driving of the first solar car to cross Australia, ran his own team to win more Bathursts....living legend
You're not wrong mate the Most Underrated Australian Driver as you said... a Living Legend
Lost his F1 drive to a skinny Austrian chancer who had Parmalat sponsorship called Lauda.
That is another legend, Allan Moffat encouraging him on.
@@chrisrumble2665 No, that's incorrect.
LP entered 15 races for 5 teams, competing in 11 races only. The teams were, 1974 Chris Amon Racing, 1976 Boro Team, 1977 Brabham (owned by Bernie Ecclestone) Replaced by John Watson, also in 1977 he drove for BRM and finally for Surtees and had a handful of races before being replaced by Patrick Tambay.
Well I have some articles from 1973 that say otherwise.
Larry is not just a legend, he sets the standard by which other legends are measured. He is one of the greatest drivers in Australia's history, and one of the very best motorsport engineers as well. He is truly an icon.
Sorry but Brock set the standard and Perkins continued to keep the standards going.
@@aussiefirie Larry built all his own cars. Plus a lot of other people's cars. Including Brock's
Brockie was perfect .LP built & engineered the car. FLICK he even cast the engine blocks for race use.
@@arffadailey8055 yes and he still has 2 of them bad boys
@@aussiefirie 😂 Brock would be a nobody without Perkins Engineering built cars and parts, Larry was the true pioneer of the sport both in car developments and components, if it wasnt for Larry and Harrop the cars would be nothing and so would their drivers… Brocks a Legend, but he couldn’t have got there without Perkins parts on his cars which were cutting edge for the times
Larry's co-driver, Russell Ingall is another legendary driver, known as 'The Enforcer'!
Yeh Russell ingell drove for ford alongside of markas Ambrose when he Whent to the USA to race the next year after that Russell ingell won the supercars championship watch that burn out celebration on utube.
Hated Ingall as a driver, usually cos he was running my guys off the road lol, but absolute legend of a person and f@cking hilarious
Perkins has one of the most Focused Minds on the planet.
An Engineer that not only drives the cars he builds, but builds them for his competitors.
A Unique Australian.
When he was on enforcer and the dude it was awesome listening to how he thinks. He is a man who loves his craft
Myself and a group of mates religiously watched Bathurst together every year from our teens. (always with lots of beer and snacks) We are now all in our 60's. I still think that this was the most thrilling race we ever witnessed.
They were called Hardie Pardies 🤣
Larry’s an absolute legend of an engineer. I went to my local exhaust bloke in a town I used to live in years ago, and he had a blue VK Commodore out the back, nice example, I was checking it out and he lifted the bonnet and I saw LP on the heads. I nearly dumped a load on the spot. This bloke used to do exhausts for Larry. Respect to a legend.
Yeah i agree, standing at the chase watching Larry come down Conrod, you could just see there was something special about his car.
Dude... I actually have tears in my eyes. This is the age where the mountain showed us some real racing.
Well called, mate!
Those Commodores back then were still just production SS Commodores modified for racing. No fancy NASCAR/AUSCAR type chassis then. Souped up engines, gearboxes, diffs and brakes. Side intrusion bars and roll cages. Not like now where it's just a facsimile of the body. Back then if you bent a panel you could nick into the carpark and pinch one off somebody else's car. Larry was famous for his bullet proof engineering.
Not in 1995 they weren't. They took a standard production shell but the aero, engine, gearbox, drivetrain, roll cage, fuel cell and running gear had nothing production about them at all.
@@carisi2k11 Correct.
@@carisi2k11 at least they started life on the Holden production line
@@gdawwg1125 Actually they didn't. The vk, vl and VN Group A Commodores did because of homologation requirements but the 3A's didn't need to meet this requirement so they all got put together at the teams workshops.
@@carisi2k11 my understanding is the car or at least the partially assembled chassis/shell was delivered by Holden/Ford from their factory then completed by the racing team
Larry is unique in that he engineered and built his own cars and was allowed into the Holden engine foundry so he could cast his own block and heads for his race engines, Larry said that there is a few of these engines out there and no one would know that they have got one.
Larry said he was allowed by the staff at the Holden engine casting foundry to take off a bit here and there on the block's mold for extra strength/rigidity and his heads had slightly bigger ports with some unique features internally for better flow. He also cast his own inlet manifold for his 'slide' fuel injection. But all that was only in the last year of Group A and the first year of V8 supercars because he was forced by the Touring Car Entrants Group Australia (TEGA) to go to the Chevy engine. Later he also had his own brake calipers, designed by him, cast by PBR and machined by Harrop Engineering.
I purchased a 4 bolt main block from Larry back in 1991, was for a customer at the time.
@@davidewhite69 I worked in Holden’s foundry in 99-00 as a student engineer. The bloke I sat next to worked with
Larry on those engines. The patterns for the V8 were out the front of the office, they only finished casting the production ones a few weeks before I started.
Larry traveled with his self-made canoe to Sri Lanka, navigating with a compass he made himself. He paddled there and harvested some rubber, then paddled to the Dunlop factory where they allowed him to make his own tires using his own recipe of chemicals mixed in with the rubber. He then always even filled the tires with his own air, a special mix of his breath and farts at just the right ratio to give the perfect properties to the tires.
@@pistonburner6448 You had me right up until the fart. That's quality mate 👍
Larry’s victories at the mountain have been some of the best victories there, he’s a legend and so humble.
Mind you 2nd was Alan Jones, 1980 F1 world champ.
3rd was Wayne Gardner, 1987 500cc GP (motogp) world champ
Wait, was that Alan Jones or Brad Jones?
@@mikespearwood3914 definitely Alan Jones. Brad Jones came 5th in a coke commodore
@@mikespearwood3914 Yep, Alan Jones. He gave Frank WIlliams' team its first F1 championship.
The field Was stacked with World Motor sport champions . All Australians of course. Shit Jack Brabham got taken out on the start line.
Thanks for showing this 😊 Larry is a genius engineer, gentleman and a hardcore man. He's the GOD of V8 engines.
I’m a Holden man to the core… but I broke my heart for Glenn seton on that day.
He never got his Bathurst win either… he deserves one.
Check out Larry Perkins in the wet… don’t think it could be argued that anyone was better.
Yes to get within a few laps from the finish and the engine gives up, it would be very hard to take.
Peter Brock...Hold my beer.
Great point
@@shaneferris6742 yeah 8 laps up sheesh
The best driver never to win.
Larry was/is an engineer and persisted with the stronger five-stud racing rims. As a spectator, one of the most intriguing things about Bathurst is the stamina, and rollercoaster of highs and lows, and everything in between. It was a crying shame that Glenn Seton's engine died in the closing laps that year. Cheers.
Larry and his son, jack have their own TH-cam channel…..you’d enjoy it, they are restoring that car plus others back to how it raced…..love your channel.
That was a massive moment in Australian motorsport. Larry Perkins was one hard to beat competitor. Also a true gentleman of Australian sport.
Absolute legend! Be sure to check out the Perkins Engineering channel too, a lot of really interesting stuff in there, with Larry’s son Jack doing restorations on some of Larry’s old cars, he gives a lot of good info on all the different cars over the different eras
yes great channel love the pass years cars him and jack are doing
@@andrewforbes146 yeah, the attention to detail Jack puts into those cars is incredible. I think he’s a real chip off the old block
@@timjohnun4297 yes indeed even down to the hose clamps it's amazing
Great drive by Larry and Russell that day. I'm a Holden man thru and thru, but gee, had to feel sorry for Glen Seton on that day. He'd won drivers Championships on a few occasions, but the one that eluded him, was winning Bathurst, in which he never did till the end of his driving career.
Larry Perkins is not only a brilliant driver but is an even more brilliant engineer and a true gentleman
I remember this race like it was yesterday, the boys & i we where partying hard & i even did a burnout in my kitchen on my Harley . Wife was not happy with that stunt it cost me a week in the dog box.
👍😁👍🇦🇺
This comment is so awesome 👏 😁🎉👍
sandman....thats GOLD ! hope youve got the kitchen floor fixed up !
Thanks for your reaction. I had tears in my eyes as he brought it home 😊 Larry is a genius engineer and builds the cars. I loved the shot of his little boy in tears watching Dad fight back like the legend that he is. He's so humble, see when he thanks Russell Ingal for doing a top job as the co-driver. 😊😊
Also great to hear the great Alan Moffat’ voice!
Blast from the past.
I was there in the crowd across from pit straight on the day. Let me tell you this still is the best race in my memory. We were cheering so much for Larry that we had lost our voices
Larry Perkins is Aussie motorsport Royalty. A humble genius. So good that they had to keep changing the regulations to make it fair. Invented no-change brake pads. TEGA then made changing them mandatory.
Larry knew his cars inside out and drove confidently 'aggressive'. Like when he out drove the Melbourne police one night lol
He did? that's epic!
Please tell more
The engine, the whole body shell, suspension etc, was built in his own garage..
The Perkins v8 is a legend engine..
But after this race, the corporates killed Supercars..
Became the lame duck we have now..
It may be a lame duck now but its so much better than most other motorsports out there bud respect what you have I wish we had a series half as good as this in the UK
Same thing for the Ford phase 4 engine….killed by CAMS and the government
I thoroughly enjoyed that race and your reaction! How wonderful does it feels when you are enjoying something 200%!
This for me was the best era for the sport, Perkins was my fav driver as a kid and that Castrol commy is prob my fav looking V8 supercar
Wicked, found it! I'm so glad you chose this race - part of Aussie V8 Motorsport folklore. Good on ya mate 🤣
I didn't watch your reaction when you posted this because I saw the race in 1995, and I've watched highlights over the years. However, on this Winter's day, while I'm making Pea and Ham soup, this video popped into my recommended feed. That win still gives me the feels whenever I watch it.
Trivia: Back in the 90s, when Bathurst was on, I'd set up my BIG stereo speakers in the lounge room hooked up to the TV. I'd then set up a bean bag chair in between them, put an esky next to the bean bag and crank up the speakers. My family knew that Bathurst was the one day of the year that I controlled the TV and the lounge room. I was surrounded by V8 sound and the TV was BIG, and I was only 7 feet from the screen. It was awesome!
Thanks for showcasing Aussie motor sport! Beautiful sounds of Aussie V8’s and of course the legend Larry Perkins!
Seen this video numerous times and it still puts me on the edge of my seat, perkins is a legend in the craft of motorsports.
Great stuff, one of those commentators was Allan Moffat winner for 70, 71, 73 and the most famous of all 1977.
I read Allan is doing it tough now but that he nominated Larry P as an executor of his estate to see that his wishes are respected.
He was an F1 Driver too!!
Larry Perkins was not only a great driver but a brilliant engineer, he also built engines for other race teams, he stuck with the Australian Holden designed V8 engine right to the end and it was still cleaning up other engines when they changed the rules and was forced to use the Chev based race engines, those days of racing the VR and VS commodores as far as I am concerned was a great era when the cars still had a lot in common with what the public could buy and relate to
The best era in my opinion. Probably better than Group C even, because the racing was closer
I love watching your excitement for the exact moments I was on the edge of my seat watching this live! Brings back the memories
My favourite racing driver of all time. He is a legend who constructed bullet-proof race cars (for himself and many others) and then raced them to numerous victories. Never seen him flustered, just did his job at the top of his sport. Probably will not see such a talent again.
I was there that day, my first Bathurst. The roar when LP took the lead was unbelievable.
Russell Ingall is racing this year in a wildcard entry. Perkins is still pottering around the farm workshop building things. Two of the great characters of Motorsport.
So looking forward to see Russell in this years great race. At 57 now 5 years since he last raced there, paired with 18 year old Brock Feeney, thenoldest and yougest driver pairing. Going to be awesome.
@@nevillesommerfeld3156 I am hoping for a podium finish. Top step is not impossible.
One of the best Bathurst races ever this one. The guy built his own car and won in it from last to 1st. Doesn't get better than that, and the look on Jack's (his young sons) face daring to hope his dad might win is priceless and brings a tear to my eye to this day.
Larry Perkins is arguably the best engine builder/race engineer in Australia and possibly anywhere in the world. His 5.0Litre Holden engines won many times, piloted by many drivers. To operate a race car at speed is a talent/gift but to have that ability and be able to feel what your engine, gearbox, differential, suspension and tyres are telling you truly is rare. When the vehicle is an extension of your body you are able to coax it to do incredible things with you. This was one such occasion.
I had a hangover on this day, started out laying on the lounge and I saw the race from start to finish. I just thought or knew to keep watching. As Larry started fighting back, I started to sit up on the lounge. As Larry got closer I started eating. I just stuck with Larry all day. When he finally won, I was over my hang over and back into the beers. I'll never forget this day. At the end, I will always remember Larry saying, ''To finish first, first you must finish''. What a quote !
I was there in 1995 with three mates camped at McPhillamy Park. I am a huge Holden fan and I still drive a Holden to this day I cannot explain the emotion or how loud the crowd roared when we seen Larry took the lead
Everyone was covered in beer.
For the last 30 laps the crowd was going off and I have never felt or seen anything like it in sports sense.
We ran from the top of the mountain to pitch straight to watch the presentation
Watching this video was brought back a lot of happiness and memories for me I was 22 years old
Was sitting there that day at the top of the Mountain. I remember watching him chase as the race went on, timing his distance from the car in front. I remember saying to my mate, "if we get a safety car here, he's a chance". I felt bad for Seton and Parsons, but what a race from Perkins and Ingall. Stuff of legend.
Larry the legend. Looks like he could be your accountant but an absolute machine behind the wheel…🎉❤
Larry was building engines for several other teams.
One of my brother's friends used to balance engines...
Most high level racing in Aus used to send crankshafts there.. and a place in melbourne.
Made me smile seeing even Larry crank sitting there.
Oh the memories, just hearing those names again 💕 memories being driving with dad to Bathurst for the weekend and my job was to sit on his lap and steer the car so his hands were free to drink and roll smokes 🤣
Had a mate that put a LP race package in his VNss & it was off its head ,very intelligent & humble man LP
can u fkin imagine the amount of adrenaline he mustve had coursing through his whole body hitting 2nd place knowing he could v well be setting century long history bruh couldve set adrenaline records alone this is so crazy
Motorsport owes such much to Larry . Upskilled cars from rock'n' rollers to running on rails . A very nice memory lane thanks Ian
great commentary on this Wrocker. yep I remembered this era as a kid. it has only gotten far better with age.
You got a chance to watch it, awesome. After the race one commentator said to Larry ‘no one has ever come from last to first place before’ Larry said ‘well they have now’ with a little chuckle. I know the guy personally, top bloke. His son Jack has type one diabetes and can only co-drive at the Bathurst race because it’s so long. He has also had a podium finish at Bathurst.
Id like to also mention the weekends away to Bathurst for everybody during the 90s and decades before that will never ever ever be forgotten. The drunkenness and goings on was Unbelievable!!!! As in camping at the mountain for 4 days and the goings on that happened almost pretty much completely unregulated (which was just awesome) up till i dunno early 2000s before it was heavily regulated with security police etc. burnouts galore ,cars being wrecked and flipped fires galore people in the back of utes being flung out blind drunk cars rolling . Chicks with there titters out etc was just so good. And thats only part of it. With zero exaggeration. Great memories. Its quite timid now and very family focussed which is fine. But back in the 90s was free for all. And as said before my time too. Just wanted to give you a little insight iwrocker of what it was like off track too. Many many stories have happened off track on the Mountain.
Wow the memories, this gave me goosebumps brother thankyou so much for posting this.truly a golden era for motorsports and Australia in general and I’m glad people from around the world are recognising and appreciating Australian culture. 🇦🇺🦘
I know this an old one Ian ... But I gotta tell ya, mate ... This is about the sixth time watching.
A Kiwi mate of mine lives in Melbourne and Perkins Engineering is one of his customers for Industrial Products. He still has one of Larry's Castrol Hoods (Bonnet) in his garage at home that Jack gave him to keep.
Cool as hell when sitting around having a chinwag and sipping on a VB or three.
Thanks for posting this Ian. Brings back great memories. Larry wasn't just a great driver but a great engineer. He developed the best Holden 308's on the track. In fact the majority of other Holden teams bought their engines from him. Another fun fact. Larry was a very handy Formula 1 driver in the seventies. In the era of James Hunt and Nikki Lauda Larry was there. Unfortunately he never got into a top car.
Lauda took his F1 seat. What could have been...
@@chrisrumble2665 Kinda glad Lauda did. Larry went on to be one of the heroes of Australasian Tin top racing. One of the fathers of Supercars.
Have loved v8 supercars since I was a young dude. Hope my boys will watch old videos like this with me when they get a bit older .. and Larry the legend was an amazing driver. All the drivers of this era were great
I watched this race live, from go to whoa. Still puts a lump in the throat watching it now nearly 30 years later.
Larry also built a Beetle back in the 80s(?) to compete in the Australian Safari, and for a long time was leading the high-tech international teams. A mate - a well-known VW specialist in Sydney - helped with parts.
One year at Bathurst, the late legendary Peter Brock, had the race well and truly in the bag, well before the last lap. All he had to do was nurse his car home. Instead, his last lap was the fastest of the race. What a champion.
This will remain as THE BEST race ever held at Mt Panorama, Bathurst. This feat by Larry & Russell can never be topped. The greatest race car engineer Australia has ever produced and an utmost gentleman on or off the camera.
Great times watching the Touring Cars back then. Perkins was terrific here & always competitive.
He & Brock, Johnson, Seton, Bowe, Grice, Moffat, Gardner, Jones, Richards, Longhurst, ... all had competitive cars so was always entertaining.
Earlier today I discovered a workshop interview that you might appreciate in your spare time. From the channel “Enforcer and The Dude” (Russell Ingall and Paul Morris) episode 11 (LP’s number) is devoted to an extended interview with Larry talking about his trucks, race cars and his F1 history in the era of the movie “Rush”. Enjoy!
OMG this was epic I was there in the crowd that year and Larry was who we had come to see win, the heartache of the fans to see him come round last and then the jubilation when he crossed the line hours later....unforgettable. Glen Seton arguably the best Aussie driver to have never won a Bathurst.....and that was his race it was almost meant for him, 30 years since his Dad won the race even the Holden fans wanted to see him win a Bathurst.
Larry is a legend. I loved the Castrol cars. Especially the VS/VT.
Wow, Ian, my heart was pounding watching that and I was never into car racing until I saw one of your reviews last year.
YES!!!! I've been waiting for you to do this one.
That Car was a BEAST. Larry Perkins engineering ROCK SOLID 👍👍
Been so many huge moments. Great races and rivalries. Larrys win is the best drivers moment, from last to the win. Toughest track. The huge crowd, The carton that should have lasted longer that day but the devastation early blew that..... The second wind (carton) lasted till the end. The only movements from the couch for necessary pits stops. Great choice for review.
Castrol ruled the roost in Australia in the 90s i was extremely lucky to be a kid then,From the V8s,Superbikes,sprint cars to Drag racing Castrol was pretty much winning all motorsports here,i was lucky enough to live near Parramatta city Speedway and eastern creek raceway/dragway when they were in their prime,so many great memories of those days getting to see Perkins,Brock,Gardner,Read,Bray and the likes Great times in Australia🇦🇺 ❤🇦🇺
I honestly believe that Bathurst produces the best drivers in the world. I would love to see the best NASCAR drivers given the opportunity to race around Bathurst. I am sitting here clued to the screen and leaning into the corners.
If only someone like Marcos Ambrose did both

Larry is a great engineer great person and use to build those very race engines for teams.
This was one of the best if not THE BEST drives ever on the Mountain. Two men a car and a Team that worked flawlessly all day, awesome performance that still impresses today
These driver know, racing at Mount Panorama - it will either make you or break you. What an amazing history this place has.
Due to the Covid situation, this years event had to be rescheduled to the end of November,
This year the event will be huge and conducted over six days, ending with the big race on the final day. Tue, 30 Nov 2021 - Sun, 5 Dec 202.
I remember watching this live on the tv, and as a Ford fan, I was shattered for Seton. What an effort for Larry Perkins. He knew how to build a good race engine. This race win is the proof!
my first Bathurst as a spectator.
just inspiring.
Started my career in Motorsport

Larry is my favourite driver of all time!I'm a surfer bloke..Epic long wknd bk then 🇦🇺💪💪🍺🍺And wild fan's..Good times
Look up Larry's drive of the V8 xu2 prototype. Drove it to Adelaide, raced, won. Driving back to Melbourne was a certain incident where he was clocked at 160 mph+ . After racing and winning. HQ Salisbury diff, HQ front discs, 308, 4 Barrel Rochester, 4 speed Aussie box. You've got to read it.
LP’s regular co-driver Gregg Hansford had been killed in a 2 litre Super Tourer earlier in 1995, so Ingall was new to the team for Sandown and Bathurst. They had also worked with Endless to develop a brake pad that could do the full 1000Km which helped them recover ground. It was an amazing race. LP was my Gavin that era as he not only drove, but he engineered and built the cars and was competitive on a fraction of the budget of the big teams.
Absolutely used to love watching Aussie V8's; best touring series that used to be on TV.
I was there that day and it was a great day for Holden and
leaping Larry did a fantastic job keeping it to the end
Ian, love your enthusiasm, made this video so much better. Genuine love for the great race...and seaton was a big sook.
Larry was one of those drivers that used the Touring Car Championship basically as a test bed for the Bathurst 1000, raced in the ATCC for many years but only got 8 wins total, but got 6 wins at Bathurst which at the time wasn't in the championship
Was there that day at turn 1. Great day.
His son Jack, who is in this video, has restored this and a few other of his dads cars.
Larry Perkins & Russel Ingel were a match made in australian folk law.
A true legend of australian motorsport & my hero growing up in high school.
When ingall said to Perkins " I'll give you the biggest kiss 🤪" that's out Aussie sense of humour and mateship hitting the fore. 👍👍🤗
I was lucky enough to be at the Bathurst race in 1993 when Perkins won it is definitely worth the trip to Bathurst, I also seen the King of the mountain Peter Brock in that same race.
I remember seeing several Bathurst races where the co driver is/ was of a shorter stature than the primary driver. So you see as one driver gets out the co driver will throw in a seat insert and get in and sinch up the seat belts , yet alone plugging in the radios etc…
Larry is one of my all-time favourites of Australian Touring Car history. Not only a gun driver but one of the best engineers ever to have built race cars. Brilliant. Just brilliant.
So interestingly, when the v8 touring cars allowed centre lock wheels, larry stuck with 5 studs. So all the other teams, 1 nut per wheel, larrys team was a nascar pitstop.
Years ago my brother worked for the bloke who was the engine builder for larry perkins in that time.
Dude this is my favourite Commodore a VS! I've had 4 and my last one was a rare 96 VS wagon 5ltr manual. It was unfortunately sold by me when I hit hard times after my mother took her own life and both are sorely missed.
Also, I just watched your recent video of the xy gtho and how crazy is it how tough it was to wrangle those things around compared to current cars! And these were production cars but obviously fitted out with safety stuff and such.
2014 Mostert/Morris did it as well in a Ford and they also had an accident early in the race making any places that had been made towards the front nul and void. The accident put them back to last so they had to pass all the cars again, they led for a quarter of a lap, the last quarter of the final lap and won. Better win in my eyes.
Its unfortunate that we no longer get to see, and will never again see, those in-car interviews. They were absolutely a spectacle as you said
This is getting towards the end of the golden age of Australian motor sport. Larry Perkins was one of the true greats.
Larry's company, Perkins Engineering built race cars, tuned them, and back in the day, raced them. His son Jack still races, and in a lot of ways, he was as much a legend in Australian touring car racing as Peter Brock. Brilliant race car driver, and well respected
"Lightning" Larry. A very nice man and one tough competitor.
He appears to be driving a VS Commodore which were made from1995 to 1997. Larry Perkins is in the same league as Peter Brock. He was brilliant. He won Bathurst 6 times and came third in 3 others. He was inducted into the V8 Supercars Hall of Fame in 2008.
Glenn Seton getting denied still hurts as a fan over 25 years later. One of the nicest fellas you'd ever hope to meet and one of the best touring car drivers in the world for over a decade, but never had luck fall his way.
Also, for something Australian Touring Car related to react to, may I suggest a video titled Morris/Fitzpatrick Bathurst 1976 FInale.
What an awesome race! I watched it live back in the day
Larry deigned his own brakes,so no pad change. This saved time and helped him .One of my all time favourites!
