  • Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing with you how minimalism changed my life. I know I've made a lot of minimalism videos in the past, but I don't think I ever shared with you the full story of how I went from being a maximalist to a minimalist. I hope you enjoy it!

    One time a nurse that works with very sick and terminally ill patients, she told me that none of these sick and dying people talk about their education, or their carriers or how much money they have or what car they drive. They always talk about their memories with family and friends, they talk about their pets and places they have traveled. They talk about they dreams, hobbies and believes in God. And they all wish to have more time on this earth to spend with their loved ones. It really opens your mind to what is really important in life.

      That's all true but something to bear in mind, we're not biochemically the same people throughout our lives. 98% of the atoms in our body are replaced annually. If you're not religious, you can even say we're transforming into different beings all the time, dying and being reborn everyday. The person on their deathbed is not the same driven/hedonistic person of their youth. I'm not sure if living a life in your youth or middle age that's catered to what you might think during your end-of-life phase is entirely the right mentality to take. For example, should your 5-year self decide to play less videogames if that 5-year old self imagined that by the time you're 35, you would've wanted the 5-year self to dedicate more time to learning?

    • @bojackkatarn
      @bojackkatarn 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@jeromestavros I think you’re not grasping my full point. Biochemically, you’re asking the being in the present to sacrifice for the being in the future. I’m saying it’s not entirely the same entity. I would also hypothesize that’s why it’s not possible for the vast majority of people beyond a thought exercise.

    • @jeromestavros
      @jeromestavros 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@bojackkatarn
      If I am not grasping your point fully, then it is because your expression is clumsy and unclear.
      I have a PhD and can fully understand the nuances in the English language.
      If the person is not the same entity as you put it, then what is it? You may say that a medical condition of a person does play a very small part in a person's cognitive ability, but not that it is "not the same entity". Of course it is the same entity, only a more aged version and perhaps less mentally acute - is that what you were trying to say?
      To imbibe and have a change of heart to pursue simplicity and minimilism comes with your heart and head (intellect) and being convinced it is a better path to pursue in your strategy for ones life.
      It will only be a "thought exercise" if you want it to be that way - by that I mean one has to make a conscious effort to effect a change and that comes from intelligence, awareness, emotion and logic.
      Even if we have "biochemically changed" this does not stop us from being cognisant and using our mental faculties, does it?
      You have gotten convulted and conflated in your premise that it is all biochemical and in our atoms and so, not possible.
      This is not the context to be even bringing that up.
      Stop using terminology inaccurately just because you like sounding smart -
      It has the opposite effect!

    We live in a “more” society. We’re taught that we should always be striving for more of everything. Minimalism has helped me with being content in the now & with where I’m at in life. I’ve found it beneficial to find a balance between gratitude & drive. 🌴

    The world tells us we are not successful if we don’t have every material possession. We are not beautiful if we age with grey hair and wrinkles. We are not happy if we don’t have someone in our life or things. I think we all need to change the story and be grateful for the day, the moments. Things can be nice but they won’t fill your soul. At the core of minimalism for me is the notion that "I am Enough." This phrase has been shared many times over now in a lot of self help areas but when I found it completely rang true for me was in the shifting of my thought processes over towards a minimalist lifestyle. I started to realize that at the core of wanting things and feeling like I needed more was this desire to prove to myself and perhaps those around me that I was worth more. When I got to the core of this insatiable desire for more, I realized that it was inextricably tied to my self worth. So in summary, learning to love myself for who I am helped me to shed the layers and layers of stuff that I was metaphorically hiding behind.

    • @jeromestavros
      @jeromestavros 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      👍👍👍 so true.
      Does it have to do with ageing, getting more mellow and reflective over these things?
      Thinking about God perhaps and the proverbial meaning of life?
      I guess all of the above.
      We are the fortunate ones, many go to the end with nothing but regrets as they have not gained that wisdom of being simple, spiritual and humble. These attributes are important.
      Ultimately, it is still a journey and the change we make must be permanent!

    I can totally relate to this video.
    In addition to other things, the pandemic made me think about happiness and why I was unhappy. I quickly
    realized its because rather than being happy im always chasing it.
    Here in the west we tend to tie happiness to outcomes. We say to ourselves "Ill be happy when X". We say things like Ill be happy when I get that promotion, or make that amount of money, or find a partner, or buy that house etc. The problem is once we achieve those goals we must
    then shift our focus onto something else to strive for in a never ending cycle. Were forever chasing happiness rather than being happy in the moment today.
    Minimalism has made me embrace where I am today and its made me embrace the simple things in life, which I think are the true keys to happiness for me.

    I have never been one for materialism. Yet when i tried to be the "norm" in society it felt like I was going against the grain to who I truly was. I travelled in India multiple times and the country and its people are happy with very little but they are rich in spirit. I live abundantly with flowers and gardens rather than a closet full of clothes or house full of stuff. I am truly at peace now and enjoy lifes simplicity and peace. Less is more and freeing. This was giving me chills at points I was relating so much. I have a huge addiction to window shopping because I'm broke. It might sound weird, but it takes up my mind and my time and gives me anxiety thinking about the next thing I want to buy when I have the money for it, and worrying about getting the money for it. I want the peace that comes with not letting money control my life and my thoughts anymore. As long as I can pay my bills and eat, I want to be content and happy with that...

    "The things you own end up owning you." We don't realise that when we chase material possessions, that's all it really is - a chase. One that will leave us breathless, tired, spent, but ultimately still unfulfilled because we will never have enough. I love what you said on how can we ask for more when we don't even appreciate what we already have? It's such a simple realisation, and if only we could practice this more in our lives, we'd be so much lighter and freer.

    Sophie, your message resonates and it's easy to veer back onto the materialist path so it takes conscious effort to stay on a minimalist path. Also your point about materialism taking different forms is so true. For example, travel is often viewed as "non-materialistic" but it costs money and oftentimes entails going out to restaurants, etc. Another flavor of materialism is fancy educations, especially the quest to go to elite universities and to get credentialed. Somehow we have to find balance as we all live in an economic system that we cannot control. Thanks again for your provocative and thoughtful segments. Great job!

    Your videos are what makes me keep going and not fall into the trap of living life automatically and live manually, where I have control.
    I can’t be alone anymore because I have 2, going to be 3, beautiful children at the age 26 and it’s tough. I value some alone time and I can only get that in the morning and the days I’m working.
    Life has been moving so fast for me that I want to take control and slow it down more so I can appreciate everything that I have. ❤️

    Love this reflection, Sophie! I’ve gone through a similar journey with realising the constant consumption wasn’t really fulfilling… and since the past year’s lockdown where I was home and wasn’t buying anything, I’ve realised I don’t actually need more STUFF. Money can certainly keep you comfy up to a certain point, but beyond that… what is that constant consumption really distracting me/ us from? My minimalism journey has certainly begun! 🙌

    Thanks again Sophie! There was a lot of dialogue in this video that was my own inner dialogue. Minimizing what we have monetarily is still a struggle even though I know this is my deepest desire. Constant advertising, plus the struggle of buying conscious cost more up front and being middle class you question yourself at every purchase. ❤️Your videos are always food for thought...200,000 and growing❤️

    and toys pays off. We traveled with the kids, we travel now. Vogue magazine hasn't come here yet. Tina

    Building a larger house than we need means that we must furnish it and maybe work overtime to pay for all the things we think we need. Trying to impress others by appearances, soon becomes cumbersome and hollow. Some of us take most of our adult lives to learn these truths. Many of us have been on the wrong path to happiness and contentment--until finally it is revealed. Hopefully, we are able to embrace the changes we need to make for greater freedom and security before it is too late. Thank You!
