"Intelligent disobedience" is when the blind partner wants to cross a street, but doesn't realize a vehicle is headed towards them (maybe it is a mostly silent electric vehicle); the blind person gives the command "FORWARD" and the dog sees the danger of the approaching vehicle and not only doesn't go forward but may even block its partner from taking a step forward into danger, until it is safe to move forward again. Or maybe there is an open manhole cover directly in the blind person's path.
Just last week my guide dog stopped me from severely hurting myself. I was intending to step off the sidewalk onto aa small parking strip between the sidewalk and a building, but I didn't realize there was actually a 2 foot drop right there. My dog just NOPE, would not move that direction! Felt with my cane and yeah I'd tried to turn a couple of meters too early.
I'm glad you're safe!
That's so scary
Mr Maple is so adorable love him being so excited jumping on you guys or ready to go out with his booties on.Paul and Matthew you're so enjoyable to watch love your chemistry and smiles:)
MR Maple likes being in the spotlight!
@@MatthewandPaulOfficial He's a shinning star made for the spotlight.
I will never forget when I saw a movie about a guide dog for the blind called, “Buddy,” and the dog needed to use his Intelligent Disobedience to stop his handler from walking down an elevator shaft. The dog did great, but the handler didn’t understand why his dog stopped and tried forcing his dog to walk closer and closer to the elevator shaft.
As a child, that part of the movie was so scary to watch.
Finally, a random guy shouted to the handler that there was no elevator there.
I think, if I’m remembering correctly, that was the part of the movie where the handler realized how important his guide dog was and that the dog just saved his life. ❤️
It's amazing how smart Dogs really are!! The fact they get trained to guide blind people and know that they don't have to work when their harnesses are off is amazing!! Mr Mapple is a sweet boy ❤❤
Right?! Knows when he is on-duty and off-duty 😄
It def depends on the breed and have to be trained from puppies.
Really fascinating hearing about your experience at guide dog school. Thanks for sharing.
You're welcome!!
I love Mr. Maple’s “commentary” throughout the whole thing.
I like Matthew's idea of two guide dogs. In my imagination it would give off grandiose dictator vibes ... like walking a panther down the street on a gold leash. It would be in stark contrast to Paul's sweet and upbeat nature.
It’s crazy how, intelligent Mister Maple is, he’s a dream guide dog and he’s very cute to. Thanks for sharing ❤
Our pleasure!
Ok but your hairstyles are matching. That’s so cute.
Hahaha it true
I'm so glad you talked about the dog claws getting caught in the treads of an escalator . I've seen it happen to the front paws of a dog on an escalator in a department store & it's the most scary thing to see an animal hurt . Highly recommend using the booties on front & back paws .
It's impossible not to smile when you see Mr. Maple's tail wagging right at the start of the clip.
For me the most amazing skill is to recognize obstacles which are hanging from above and are a danger to hit with the head
Thank you for being happy, loving, enjoyable, sensible and caring people. That’s my top five!
I've got to comment on the short about the cup of urine that Paul ran into. Maple was trying to stop you, maybe next time you will listen!!
I have no doubt in my mind that Mr. Maple was an accomplished student in Guide Dog School.
He was, indeed!!
Daddy Long Legs wilding out here with: “Feeling up a wall.” 😂
LMAO
😂
I am from the Netherlands and worked my whole live at a blindinstitute. You are amazing guys love you both. When you come to Netherlands visit us.....
It's not JUST rural areas - plenty of neighborhoods in Seattle don't have them. The area around Matthews Beach Park, for example, doesn't have many sidewalks. My own neighborhood only has them on the busy streets.
Or something like getting around a construction barrier, where there's normally a sidewalk, it's just that part of it is temporarily blocked off.
In the UK all elevators (lifts) have brail on the buttons.
In the US as well, it's required by the ADA.
Paul can read it, he probably just didn't think to mention it.
You guyes have such beutyfull and respectfull relationship to Mr Mapel. He "works" for you as a guide but he is also good friend for both of you. I love it😁
You are so kind
I hope that you take my comment with my respect. I have always thought that ‘blind dating’ was for people to meet without seeing ‘commonly acceptable’ beauty, they hear what’s said and can have a better idea of who they’re meeting through conversation . You guys are physically and mentally perfect. I wish that everyone could be so happy in their ‘intelligent existence’.
So him hugging the edge of a sidewalkless street, makes sense that he hugs the buildings when you are walking on streets. Please keep making these videos!
Paul, I love when you talked about massaging Mr Maples paws. I have a rescue husky and I've done that literally every night. He takes a deep sigh, gets droopy eyes and drifts off to sleep. 🐾🐕🦺
Honestly Paul you would be so good as an o & m instructor and maybe good with kids
Quote of the Day: “We love you, Maple. Fur and all.”
We need that on a t-shirt.... that is subsequently covered in fur (or maybe the "fur" is printed on the shirt so it can never be lint-rolled off?)
Ohhh that elevator... brings back memories 😱 I had to go up once at a trainstation with my (no-guide-) Labrador. This big boy weighed 45 kg. and I had to carrie him because I was so so scared of that last bit of the elevator. He was SO heavy, me a small woman... and he couldn't stop kissing my face on the way up! I died at least ten times. LOVE you guys!! All three!!
This is so exciting!! Especially because in 3 days a puppy i helped to raise is graduating with her handler in Boring OR!!! I get to go. Yayy yippeeee. Thank you for sharing this
Oh wow!
He's such an incredible and a sweeeeeet one❤
Paul, Your laughter is so wonderful! Both of your smiles help me when I watch you! I absolutely LOVE Mr. Maples proud moments.
Thanks so much
It's amazing to hear Paul's guide dog 🦮 story's and seeing how Matthew is around Mr Maple 🍁 your both such a cute couple keep up this amazing job on educating us on being interabled couple sending hugs 🫂 from the UK 🇬🇧
Thank you so much!
@@MatthewandPaulOfficial your welcome guys love the content on your social media platforms I think your an amazing couple, Paul like the way you deal with the daily challenges of being disabled Matthew lile the way you take care of Paul and the pranks
Love Mr Maple, so talented. You two guys are adorable
❤❤
Mr. Maple is already too cute for words but Mr. Maple in booties is so freaking adorable!!
Night for me is also black. I have vision loss due to severe, progressive shortsightedness and diabetes (Bilateral retinopathy). I'm fine as long as drivers don't put full headlights up, because the sudden brightness leaves me with a "whiteout" for several minutes, which is painful. But, yes, I can relate. I am dreading the day when my vision goes completely. It happened with my son (Bilateral retinal detachment and Retinitis Pigmatosa) and my mother (MS). Your videos are a great help.
Glad these two found one another❤ wonder what their lives was like, before they met?and how different their lives are now.
You two and Mr. Maple are amazing. ❣️
Thankfully, I already know what the last one means because of Molly :D Otherwise this would be a very mean one for the extended xD
Hi. I’m a service dog 🐕🦺 handler myself & all the trainers I worked with said they shouldn’t go on escalators even with their shoes on. I watched Mr.Maple handle the escalator so flawlessly & was very impressed. My service dog & I just take the steps or elevator. But once in an emergency I had to pick him up to go up the escalator. It was very terrifying for both of us. I wouldn’t recommend mixing dogs & escalators for anyone else though.
Matthew reminds me of John Barrowman. That's a good thing as I think John Barrowman is a handsome and talented person. Paul is such a handsome man as well. Sweet Maple is so smart and gorgeous. Guide dogs are awesome.
Haha, I've heard that before - thank you!!
Equigroomer is a grooming tool that a puppy raiser friend of mine recommended to me. It is far superior to the FURminator in my opinion. You can also use it to get dog hair off of clothing, and car upholstery. my grooming process has grass drastically changed because of this, I use this in the zoom room. I have my current guy, dog, and my retired girl, and I can groom both of them in probably 10 minutes now.
I don't think Paul could have been matched with a better guide. Maple & Paul were destined to journey through life together & I hope you two have many, many great years navigating as many adventures (even the mundane ones) together as possible. And of course Matthew too!
You guys are amazing, and Mr. Maple is the best.
I just love you two good looking wonderful souls ❤️. Thanks for sharing this journey
😊 thank you
I really appreciated you showing us these skills I am so pleased to watch this thank you❤❤❤❤
You are so welcome
Your videos are very helpful and entertaining. Can't wait to get my guide dog
Glad you like them!
Yes I’d love to see the full demonstration in real life. 🥰 love your videos and chemistry
Es schön Ihnen zuzusehen, sind wirken so sympathisch.Als Team, mit Hund sind sie unschlagbar...lassen sie uns Zusachauer gern weiter an ihrem gemeinsamen Alltag teilhaben.
I was very fascinated by ‘Intelligent Disobedience’. Thank you for introducing me to that term.
Yes, it's a very interesting skill!!
It's also called obedient disobedience
I love ur channel n i learning sooo much Matthew tthank you 4 asking the questions that i was thinking Paul ur a fighter
Thank you!!❤❤
Tell me why every video this man has a bone in his mouth? 😂 such a derpy lil helper I love him
You guys are so awesome! Love you two! I mean three with Mr. Maple!
Being disabled myself, Deaf, I can relate to your feelings Paul. Unfortunately, living on disability income limits my funds to essentials. Could you please share #5??? Thank you in advance.
Matthew, it's not dog hair it's dog GLITTER😂😂. My assistance dog LOVES to share the love. We will also use intelligent disobedience by the time she's finished her training. I've heard some awful horror stories about dog v escalator
Love that!
Aww he is smart puppy and ur good dads
You have a lovely dog and so are you
You guys are such teases 🧡
Week 2, week 5, same thing 😂 and the dog hair everywhere - SO relatable! I have a lil chihuahua and even when I’m out of the house and not with her, I find her hair EVERYWHERE! 😂❤ I’m curious, how is Maple with other dogs? Has another dog ever approached him when he’s working? How would he handle it? ❤ Love you all!
What if you're walking in a truly rural area where there are not only no sidewalks but no curb either? Where I grew up, the road went right to grass, oftentimes with a deep ditch dropoff just a couple feet from the road.
Mr Marple is awesome.Hes so cute and best thing he knows who is dads are ❤❤
Y'all are so adorable, and Mabel is soooo cute. Side note tho, could y'all bring up the volume a little bit because it was a little harder to hear y'all without my volume on my phone being all the way up, thank you and hope y'all have a nice day!
Lovely Cute Maple!!!! Always!!!! With Lovely Ones!!!! Always!!!!
I think Paul , Matthew and Mr Maple are so great! I love the intelligent disobedience. I know some people that have a lot of experience with not so intelligent disobedience 😎💕❤️🤗. Hugs to Matthew, Paul and Mr Maple.
I’m not good with escalators. I actually fell on one. Lambert International Airport in St Louis Not good
Sidewalkless travel is also useful with construction which is common in Seattle, at least in my area. I had my trainer set up extra obstacles to work on the dealing with construction because I was tired to throwing my cane around and hoping I hit/find a construction worker to help me get through the new mess.
Love ur shirt Paul!!
Love your social media segments. As a former puppy raiser for Guiding Eyes for the Blind, I would ask if you might be able to periodically push for individuals and couples to become volunteer puppy raisers for one of the guide dog programs around the country. It’s an invaluable service that provides the strong foundation from which guide dogs are formed. Thanks, guys.
There is something just fascinating about your story w Mr M
I remember watching the TV movie Love Leads the Way about the first guide dog in America and the struggle it took to make the law for guide dogs to do their Job.
Paul looks really vibrant in this shirt! 👕🩵
i love these twoo
Mathew chuckling at Paul's Canadianisms was so funny to me as a Canadian.
Thank you so much for sharing your story: it is so informative and generous of you to be willing to do this. Are there additional skills Mr. Maple had to learn in training you don’t necessarily have to use in your day to day?
Yes of course!
your dog Maple is so very clever
Amazing skills
Do guide dogs ever have to go back to the trainers for a tune up?
Hey I just found your page I love you guys, Paul you are so inspirational and Matthew you’re an amazing friend/spouse/support for Paul. I do have a question though, do you get messed with ever, like bullying, for being blind when you’re alone or even with Matthew? I’m sorry if so but thank you guys for sharing your story, and keep it up!!❤
Mr. Maple always has a toy or a bone in his mouth. It is so cute
I love ruffwear boots. Great for snow, ice, salt, heat and safety.
I'm not blind but I keep watching/listening to this chat while holding my laundry.
you are the cutest couple i cant take it ❤
Wow! A video showed up in my feed tonight, and I’ve been binging ever since, lol! I have a question.. you said that at night you cannot see anything. I’m wondering if there is a full moon, can you see a little white spot, or no? Or what about a blood moon? Or night time lightning?
I’m going to continue on my binge now lol, you guys are awesome, and your shorts made me laugh today, I especially love the pranks. MATTHEW!!! I really needed that laughter today, been a rough holiday season for me, so thank you for that!
I hope the best in 2024 for you 3 ❤ from Van island!
As someone with partial night blindness, I get the dim restraint thing.
I can relate to because my mom is visually impaired since 2012 but the difference is that she doesn’t have a guide dog.
we don't have sidewalks in parts of our suburb area, due to county ,city and unincorporated area. It seems really not safe for anyone
Mr. Maple has more aptitude and intelligence than some real people. 👍
LMAO he really does tho
Same here I can't see in the dark either
I live in Toronto Canada and in my neighbourhood there are quite a lot of streets that do not have side walks or only have a sidewalk half way down the street, so sidewalk less training will definitely be good for me.
I can't think of many parts of Toronto like that. Maybe some sections of North York?
@@junbh2 i am not in north york
This is so cool :D see the diferens from handler to handler :) I Love watching videos like this :) You have the same as Molly, and I think I found you trough her.
If you have both the blue and the black shoes in the bag, How do you know which is which? I noticed in the video the blue shoes were on his back feet :D, but when you are alone and you want to go to the mall or something, how do you know?
LovelyOnes!!!! Always!!!! With Lovely Cute Maple!!!! Always!!!!
6:46 There’s a new pair of Satellite Dish Ears in town.
LOL
Carol Moore 34 good job. Love so. Much dogs
🎉❤
He was sharing dog glitter with you!
These videos make my day, so I've started saving them for the bad days. So bad for your stats sorry but you guys are such a pick-me-up!
🥰🥹🥲 Mr. Maple is one of the most enthusiastic dogs I've ever seen!
Paul, if u don't mind me asking, do u have any tips for people that ask to pet him; how people should react when he comes in contact with a stranger in public? 🤔👨🏼🦯🦮😁
You should always ask before petting any dog whether they're a guide or assistance or regular dog. But if the harness is held, it's working & a definite no. 🥰❤️
Normally you should ignore all working service dogs unless you've been specifically invited to interact with them. Don't pet them of course, but also don't talk to them or try to get their attention. It's distracting and can teach them to lose focus when they see people.
Sadly I have to miss it due to softball but I will watch it later!
Good luck at soft ball!!
@@MatthewandPaulOfficial Thank You!
Great video.... I wondered mr maple parents video... what color was Murdock his brother.
Murdcok is also a yellow lab!
I'm excited to hear when Matthew meets Mr maple. I'm enjoying this very much.
Mr Maple converted me from a cat person to a dog person. Love him❤
One skill Maple didn't have to learn because he was born with it is being cute!!
I just discovered u can zoom a youtube video and Matthew's shirt is sheer
Have you been on an escalator, where the handrail is faster than the stairs? xD
I guess some of the next episode is Matthew meeting Maple in person.
When I was sighted I was an elevator & escalator contractor. The escalator is the most dangerous for the dog getting his claws and pads stuck in the comb-teeth on exiting the the unit. I don't have a guide dog but if I did I would feel safer for the dog using the elevator.
