I think Thomas Astruc confirmed: Marinette's hair is black, but appears as blue because black hair is hard to animate. Adrien even talked about her black hair in his poem. I think Marc has black hair because he came later in the series, where the animators became better, but they wouldn't change Marinette's hair because it would be weird to just change a character's hair color like this randomly.
I've heard two things explaining why Marinette's hair looks blue but I'm not sure which is true. 1. Her hair is canonly black but they made it look blue to make her more unique because she's the main character. 2. They made her hair blue but it's hard to animate black hair. I honestly believe that her hair is black but different animation studios just use their own colors and models which is why her hair color and eye are constantly changing color. I could be totally wrong though. I don't really understand why so many people in the fandom are so heated about this topic. Her hair is as dark as night, no need call someone an idiot over it. 💀
Pretty much. 💀 Hell, I even created my own headcanon where her hair in her civilian from would be blue-ish black but, when she transforms into ladybug it would actually be black, so everyone can be happy. 😂
The first one doesn't make much sense to me....and the second one, many characters have black hair colour. Idk why so many studios have ti animate them, it creates so many ''silly'' problems. According to me, she has blue hair so that when the colours are inverted, her hair matches with Adrien's.
I’d say it’s definitely blue. Even if canonically meant to resemble black, the color they use is still more of a blue color. The fact that they even have characters with black hair, including HERSELF when she becomes Ladynoir just kinda goes to show that her natural hair is more of a blue color. The blue also becomes a lot more noticeable in some of her unified forms, specifically Pegabug and Pennybug where her hair has an ombré to white/light blue respectively. Even the giant Ladybug cake that Tom and Sabine are making in the heroes day episode has dark blue macaroons/candies for Ladybug’s hair.
Just to debunk the hair dye theory- Unless Mari, Mari's mother, Kagami, Kagami's mother and (maybe) Nathalie are all dying their hair a very similar colour- I think it's safe to say that the blue hair was initially representing black hair. Then plans changed with Marc. That's my theory, and it makes the most sense. I just don't see the hair dye theory working when there's so many other characters that have the same or similar blue hair colour. Yes they _could_ be dying their hair, but come on. Does Kagami's mother really seem like the type to dye her hair _any_ colour?
Definitely! I think blue was used as a design choice, with the iconic-ness of it in mind. HOWEVERRR in universe, her hair is meant to be depicted as black if she were a real human. Blue is just a prettier nicer color to look at for the audience as it contrasts well with the red suit. It started out black with blue highlights but later it feels like they decided full blue looks better. Lastly, I agree with you because none of these characters seem likely to dye their hair unnatural colors

I think bc it’s a cartoon lots of characters have non realistic hair color and kagami also has blue hair and since her mom is strict I don’t think she would be able to dye it
I’d say it’s canonically SUPPOSED to be black and making it blue just a creative visual choice (which I don’t think was a budget thing. It’s hard to render black hair without it just looking like void since it’s literally THE darkest colour and essentially void of colours completely. Black doesn’t have a lighter version of itself, meaning that it’s hard to do highlights. Gray, sure, but using gray highlights can just make the character look like they’re gray haired which is not the vibes. People therefore tend to turn to blue instead since that’s the closest real alternative. Back in ancient times, blue wasn’t even a colour. The sky and water was described as being black, since blue is basically just a lighter version of black. The only thing really affecting it is weather it’s lighter or darker, which is the same with Marinette’s hair. It could be argued for being black in screenshots where it looks darker, and blue in screenshots where it looks lighter. It’s the gold and blue dress all over again istg. Anyways, that’s why people tend to go for blue highlights. Or, in Marinette’s case, full on blue tinted hair. I would not say this was a budget issue, but rather a skill issue on the designers and artists side. And perhaps just a way to make her look more interesting. Either way, they added more black haired characters in the story as they went, and seemed to get better at interpreting it but it was already too late to properly change Marinette’s hair. That's because they have other colors to help with the animation. Fei, Natalie, Juleka have streaks in their hair. Ladynoire has the green from the cat ears. Marc's hair is actually navy blue too but it turns black when he transform becuz then he also has red rooster hair. Plus he doesn't appear as often as Marinette.
I think her hair is cannonically black because she's half chinese so logicaly her natural hair color would be black, also if she had blue hair why would Kagami have blue hair too, since they have the same hair color and we know that Kagami is fully japanese. However, I think that the animators gave her blue/purple hair because it looks better with her outfit, it makes her stand out from the rest of the characters and I also heard that it's easy to animate with all the shadows and highlights
They also kept the blue hair for merch and other shows because changing it to black might make her unrecognisable by kids or irrelevant to the original show

I always assumed her hair was just blue-black, as where the blue is more noticeable depending on the lighting indoors or outdoors type of situation. (Even if not, her hair can still be considered blue-black anyways without any regards to lighting.) Usually charactes in animation that have black hair are usually animated with dark hair of another color, like blue. So they'r hair is easier to track and not to look too dark in the shadows. And side chracters don't appear so often so they didn't recieve the same treatment. Excuse my bad english.
Her hair is black. Canonically, it's black, styled as blue to match how superhero comics used blue highlights. The various animator studios rendering aside, the other reason why her hair is "so blue" is she actually has "Raven Black" hair. It's a rare and very specific type of hair color, usually known in Asian countries. Black hair is usually "super dark brown" well raven black is so black it's actually more reflective of light and such, so it appears "more colorful", usually though in a more bluish hue. (It's the same hair Sailor Mars has actually, as she's the only character in Sailor Moon whose dark "black" hair is rendered with a purple undertone).

I’d say it LOOKS blue, but the shade of blue it is represents black. Cos if her hair was really black then it would blend in with her Ladybug outfit and her hair is one of Marinette’s distinguishable features so it’s going to want to stand out. It IS blue, but only for aesthetic purposes and not actually because her hair is blue. Also, when she’s Lady Noir, her hair is very black :)
When creating black hair, there is an extra color than animators/artists use to make sure the hair can have depth and life. As in artist, I also use this technique, preferring cooler colors such as blue and purple. With that, Marinette hair seems blue because of the highlights. The model might have blueish hair, but she canonically has black hair.
It's definitely a dark blue IMO, I don't know what Thomas Astruc was saying. It's not just just highlights or whatever a character that actually does that is Sailor Mars because her hair is black with purple highlights but in 3d you can't really do highlights the same way.
This could absolutely be wrong so take this with a grain of salt, but Marinette's hair is canonically black, it's just hard to animate black hair in 3d animation so they made it blue, and with other black haired characters, they don't appear as often as the main character does, so maybe that's another reason why her hair is blue (again, this could be wrong, feel free to correct me)
In some seasons it’s appears more black like for example in season 2 in like reverser or something or dark owl where the animation is different to other episodes but I think it’s blue. Sabine literally has blue hair as well.
Using eyes: blue (even though im colorblind😅) Using my 3 years of animation university studies: black, because animators (2D or 3D) always use other colors intead of the natural ones in order to make the sketches more exciting ( for example Blue=black, green=brown, red= ginger, yellow= blonde etc) Also mari is THE MAIN caracter, so they wanted to male her more special. Also black hair is hard to animate and Marinette and Ladybug both appear in ev ery single episode. So even after the animators evolved and made new characters with ACTUAL black hair (for example Marc and Ladynoir) they didnt change it so it doesnt confuse the fandom.
I think it's black, (cannonicly black but appears blue) marinette was originally supposed to be animated or like a comic character (pretty sure) and it's also just hard to animate black hair in general.
Kind of just thought they were stylizing black hair as blue like as an artistic choice, like we have so many characters with blue hair for no reason like marinette, her mom, kagami, nathalie, Mireille. but we also do have characters with black hair even in season one like her uncle and Ivan but you could still make an argument about how they dont have any sort of highlights or reflections in their hair since both of them have shaved heads. But with us seeing Fei and Marc with actual black hair highlights n all I think there's no argument now like its blue. Her hair is blue.
Friends of an animator here! Maris hair is actually black but it appears blue because it’s really hard to get black hair to follow the character. Reasons why some other characters with black hair actually have black hair is because there is ANOTHER color or thing to help direct your eyes to the characters hair flow :) for example, Fei she has a streak of red hair what they happen to call “Asian streak” to help follow and direct the flow of the black hair, or ladynoire who has her cat ears and braid :)
I saw an animation video so basically her hair is black but adding highlights shadows and movement would be harder so they made it dark blue . Same thing for julika because she has a purple streak to help with the same reasons so basically it is blue but it’s supposed to be black
even though it's canonially black, they made it blue so that when her and adrien's colours are inverted they look like each other (mari's hair will be blonde, her shirt will be black, her jacket will be white and her jeans will be green/blue and visa versa for adrien) hope this helped!
Blue, I think she looks better with blue hair cause not only is it more flattering on her. But when paired with the Ladybug outfit, the hair pops out even more.

People have told me that her hair was supposed to be black but they couldn't animate it or whatever but it doesn't matter what colour her hair was originally meant to be. In the show it's so obviously blue and if you can't see that you're colourblind lol.
I think the original plan was to make her hair black since you can see its black in some first 3d animations before the actual show aired but once more animation studios came, they just thought it was blue and did not really think about what her hair colour was supposed to look so they made it blue. We now see less of Samg and more of lower quality studios si her hair is now blue in my opinion, only looks black in some scenes made by SAMG
Ok so I know many animators and asked them the same thing, all their answers were the same. They said because it’s really hard to animate black hair, because usually u would add texture with the color black and it’s hard, that’s why many characters with black hair have a colored streak in it to add something, I’m pretty sure it’s called an Asian streak, that’s why luka and juleka have black hair with colors, or volpina, and notice how kagami and Sabine also have blue hair? It’s not a marinertte thing, I believe that only a few characters have black hair to differentiate them from the others, also at the beginning they probably didn’t know how much of a success miraculous would be so they didn’t set the best animators ever, plus Marinette is in almost every scene and u have to animate or add that every TIME. One Last thing is that like u said Marinette’s hair has become her signature look, why change it? That is just my info on the situation so to sum it up irl she has black hair, so if the show was irl she would have black hair, it’s just hard to animate black hair, so yeah comment your opinions, or anything else questions, comments, etc.

To me it bounces back and forth with it being a dark blue to a more noticeable blue. With the episodes. Which I know the whole that most of the time they use dark blue for characters that's supposed to have black hair. But in this case I will have to say her hair for the most of the time. I think it was going to be black but for character design they decided to make it blue. Maybe because they wanted her eyes to pop out or the hair to make contrast with the suit. But when the fandom started to question it (which you should never do because this show has no sense) Thomas had to get a logical answer (like the costumes thing and why they cant recognized each other) so he just said that it was black. I think that is blue and that Thomas came up with that shitty response like he always does.

The budget could be one of the reasons that she has blue hair, and eventually when they had the money to make black hair for her they just stuck with the blue because everyone got used to it. But there might be a visual thing involved too; Sailor Moon was supposed to have silver hair, but they changed it to blonde for better visuals, and I’m assuming that blonde gave Usagi a more youthful look, compared to Serenity, who was more mature and wise. Marinette has a pretty dull outfit in terms of color compared to other characters on the show, especially newer ones like Zoe. Giving her pure black hair would have just dulled her out even more, especially in her ladybug suit. Her blue hair gives her pallet a bit more life, and stands out when she’s in Ladybug form. It would have been random to just change her hair back to black mid-way through the show :)

It looks blue but it was too hard to animate it to black.The reason why other characters have black hair is because they aren’t seen as much and Marinette is the main character. and the reason why they have her hair blue in all of the merchandise it’s because it will not look like Marinette if she has black hair. you can see in other Shows they have blue hair but it’s harder to animate. I think it looks blue but I say it’s black if that makes sense.

Honestly I think that it could really fall in between. Like her hair is chronically blue but looking at the realistic side of it her hair is probably black with blue tint even though it’s clearly blue. I think if the show were to be live action her hair would be black but since it is a animation and blue has been her trade mark since season 1 her hair is blue! I hope this makes sense 😭
I always assumed her hair was just blue-black, as where the blue is more noticeable depending on the lighting indoors or outdoors type of situation. (Even if not, her hair can still be considered blue-black anyways without any regards to lighting.)

Usually charactes in animation that have black hair are usually animated with dark hair of another color, like blue. So they'r hair is easier to track and not to look too dark in the shadows. And side chracters don't appear so often so they didn't recieve the same treatment. Excuse my bad english.

The various animator studios rendering aside, the other reason why her hair is "so blue" is she actually has "Raven Black" hair. It's a rare and very specific type of hair color, usually known in Asian countries. Black hair is usually "super dark brown" well raven black is so black it's actually more reflective of light and such, so it appears "more colorful", usually though in a more bluish hue. (It's the same hair Sailor Mars has actually, as she's the only character in Sailor Moon whose dark "black" hair is rendered with a purple undertone).

Such as an African American person having skin so dark as to being referred to as a blue-black. Meaning there is no brown tone to their skin.
I’d say it LOOKS blue, but the shade of blue it is represents black. Cos if her hair was really black then it would blend in with her Ladybug outfit and her hair is one of Marinette’s distinguishable features so it’s going to want to stand out. It IS blue, but only for aesthetic purposes and not actually because her hair is blue. Also, when she’s Lady Noir, her hair is very black :)
When creating black hair, there is an extra color than animators/artists use to make sure the hair can have depth and life. As in artist, I also use this technique, preferring cooler colors such as blue and purple. With that, Marinette hair seems blue because of the highlights. The model might have blueish hair, but she canonically has black hair.
It's definitely a dark blue IMO, I don't know what Thomas Astruc was saying. It's not just just highlights or whatever a character that actually does that is Sailor Mars because her hair is black with purple highlights but in 3d you can't really do highlights the same way.

This could absolutely be wrong so take this with a grain of salt, but Marinette's hair is canonically black, it's just hard to animate black hair in 3d animation so they made it blue, and with other black haired characters, they don't appear as often as the main character does, so maybe that's another reason why her hair is blue (again, this could be wrong, feel free to correct me)

In some seasons it’s appears more black like for example in season 2 in like reverser or something or dark owl where the animation is different to other episodes but I think it’s blue. Sabine literally has blue hair as well.

Using my 3 years of animation university studies: black, because animators (2D or 3D) always use other colors intead of the natural ones in order to make the sketches more exciting ( for example Blue=black, green=brown, red= ginger, yellow= blonde etc) Also mari is THE MAIN caracter, so they wanted to male her more special.
Also black hair is hard to animate and Marinette and Ladybug both appear in ev ery single episode. So even after the animators evolved and made new characters with ACTUAL black hair (for example Marc and Ladynoir) they didnt change it so it doesnt confuse the fandom.

Kind of just thought they were stylizing black hair as blue like as an artistic choice, like we have so many characters with blue hair for no reason like marinette, her mom, kagami, nathalie, Mireille. but we also do have characters with black hair even in season one like her uncle and Ivan but you could still make an argument about how they dont have any sort of highlights or reflections in their hair since both of them have shaved heads. But with us seeing Fei and Marc with actual black hair highlights n all I think there's no argument now like its blue. Her hair is blue.
To be fair, Wang Cheng and Ivan’s hair is really short, so they don’t need to worry about animating it much (if not at all) compared to Marinette.

Friends of an animator here! Maris hair is actually black but it appears blue because it’s really hard to get black hair to follow the character. Reasons why some other characters with black hair actually have black hair is because there is ANOTHER color or thing to help direct your eyes to the characters hair flow :) for example, Fei she has a streak of red hair what they happen to call “Asian streak” to help follow and direct the flow of the black hair, or ladynoire who has her cat ears and braid :)
(Obviously not friends with a show animator but friends with someone who animates is what I mean 😭)

I saw an animation video so basically her hair is black but adding highlights shadows and movement would be harder so they made it dark blue . Same thing for julika because she has a purple streak to help with the same reasons so basically it is blue but it’s supposed to be black
even though it's canonially black, they made it blue so that when her and adrien's colours are inverted they look like each other (mari's hair will be blonde, her shirt will be black, her jacket will be white and her jeans will be green/blue and visa versa for adrien) hope this helped!
Blue, I think she looks better with blue hair cause not only is it more flattering on her. But when paired with the Ladybug outfit, the hair pops out even more.
Ik her hair is black but I can't imagine her hair being black for some reason. They added too much blue highlights to her hair. Although it was confirmed by the creator, it is true that the merchandise, other movies, etc that her hair is blue. I also feel like if you needed to highlight it why can’t you use gray or something? I think the original plan was to make her hair black since you can see its black in some first 3d animations before the actual show aired but once more animation studios came, they just thought it was blue and did not really think about what her hair colour was supposed to look so they made it blue. We now see less of Samg and more of lower quality studios si her hair is now blue in my opinion, only looks black in some scenes made by SAMG

Ok so I know many animators and asked them the same thing, all their answers were the same. They said because it’s really hard to animate black hair, because usually u would add texture with the color black and it’s hard, that’s why many characters with black hair have a colored streak in it to add something, I’m pretty sure it’s called an Asian streak, that’s why luka and juleka have black hair with colors, or volpina, and notice how kagami and Sabine also have blue hair? It’s not a marinertte thing, I believe that only a few characters have black hair to differentiate them from the others, also at the beginning they probably didn’t know how much of a success miraculous would be so they didn’t set the best animators ever, plus Marinette is in almost every scene and u have to animate or add that every TIME. One Last thing is that like u said Marinette’s hair has become her signature look, why change it? That is just my info on the situation so to sum it up irl she has black hair, so if the show was irl she would have black hair, it’s just hard to animate black hair, so yeah comment your opinions, or anything else questions, comments, etc.

I saw a video that explained black hair is hard to and show movement while animating so characters with actually black hair have a strike of colour to show that movement (example: Juleka) but Marinette's hair is fully black so to show the movement they put it as a navy blue colour but idk what to think

I think it was going to be black but for character design they decided to make it blue. Maybe because they wanted her eyes to pop out or the hair to make contrast with the suit. But when the fandom started to question it (which you should never do because this show has no sense) Thomas had to get a logical answer (like the costumes thing and why they cant recognized each other) so he just said that it was black. I think that is blue and that Thomas came up with that shitty response like he always does.

I think it’s black but it looks blue on screen and also I heard they kind of changed her hair colour so people can see it.
The budget could be one of the reasons that she has blue hair, and eventually when they had the money to make black hair for her they just stuck with the blue because everyone got used to it. But there might be a visual thing involved too; Sailor Moon was supposed to have silver hair, but they changed it to blonde for better visuals, and I’m assuming that blonde gave Usagi a more youthful look, compared to Serenity, who was more mature and wise. Marinette has a pretty dull outfit in terms of color compared to other characters on the show, especially newer ones like Zoe. Giving her pure black hair would have just dulled her out even more, especially in her ladybug suit. Her blue hair gives her pallet a bit more life, and stands out when she’s in Ladybug form.
It would have been random to just change her hair back to black mid-way through the show :)
