You can tell that Adrien is slowly figuring out that Marinette is Ladybug. In his head he compares Mari to Ladybug so much that he’s probably going to figure it out first. He probably also has feelings for her but always stops himself because he likes Ladybug.

True, he put 2 and 2 together in both Kwami Buster and Chat Blanc. The only reason he didn't pursue that thought in Kwami Buster, was because they're not supposed to know, plus, there was the mission to tend to. Both times, he was happy with the thought that Marinette could be Ladybug. Even going as far as telling Marinette that he loves her, without checking to be sure first. Also the Line "What if Marinette were Ladybug?" This hints that Adrien thinks that if Marinette were in fact Ladybug, it would explain why he feels there's something more than just a friend. When he says "and now I know why" in Chat Blanc, it could also mean that the fact that Marinette is Ladybug is why he always thought about her as more than just a friend .

My theory is simple: Adrien keeps on denying his feelings for Marinette because he likes ladybug and would feel like he was "cheating" on ladybug if he ever admitted to himself or acted upon his feelings towards Marinette. Even with Kagami it feels like he is distracted and holding back, because he is. He is distancing himself with his romantic feelings because he is so infatuated with ladybug and it would feel wrong for him to romantically be with someone else while be so "in love" with Ladybug. So I believe he def likes Marinette but will not act upon it as long as he loves Ladybug.
There are 2 more pieces of evidence. 1. When he backs up from kissing Marinette at the museum, he knew she was thinking that it was only a statue. It wouldn't have been fair for her to kiss him thinking she was kissing a statue. So he made that clear before "the worse" could happen. 2. Adrien basically ASKED Marinette for her permission to date Kagami. In Glaciator, Adrien Knew the meaning of the ice-cream. In the last episode of s3, he asked MARINETTE to CHOOSE if he should share the ice-cream with her or with Kagami and she decided to let them date. 3. Adrien suspected more than once that Marinette might like him. In the s.Valentine day episode when Marinette forgets to sign her heart shaped poem, when he reads it, his mind immediately goes to think to compare it to Marinette's notes. Then he says... "but there's Luka, it must be a coincidence". Besides, as Chat, he's been in Marinette's room when it was covered with pictures of him (with hearts drawn around his face and not around the clothes). So he for sure sospects it. When he confronts her about it, she denies it. 4. He asked her multiple times of her opinion of chat, because obviously he want to see if she likes him. She always denies it, obviously. So really. Adrien really did the obvious thing.
This comment is so underrated, I totally agree with you! I also think he actually notices but Marinette is just too hesitant and has lost a bunch of opportunities that Adrien himself has given directly to her... He's just way to polite and respectful, and even doubtful it obviously has everything to do with the isolation he has suffered, doesn't fight for any love because maybe in the bottom of his heart he thinks he doesn't deserve any, due to the fact that not even his father wants to spend time with him, and that being the exact opposite of his warm kind self hasn't worked out either with Ladybug when he's the flirty Chat Noir we all love, maybe too aggressive to be liked by Marinette that way, he doesn't know what else to do because he's just 13-14 years old and boy is that age really confusing, especially with those issues and no maternal figure to ask for advice... I actually think Adrien is a great character, hope the writers will make him justice with a great development in the future seasons, and also hope the same for Marinette, they're still kids after all.

I can’t remember what episodes this is from but there were akumas or something and you can see the difference between how Adrien protects Kagami vs Marinette. First of all, Adrien barely had any friends so he is not that experienced in friendships and social cues. And whenever he gets the suspicion that Marinette likes him, she denies it and brings their relationship backwards. In frozer, she declined his idea of going skating with her alone. In puppeteer 2, she makes Adrien think she hates him. And her unwillingness to be open with him puts a roadblock in their friendship. How is their relationship supposed to go anywhere if Marinette can barely talk to him without stuttering. Plus she hangs around Luka; in stormy weather 2, luka is one of the reasons Adrien states for why Marinette can’t possibly like him. Marinette keeps coming up with excuses and basically outright rejecting Adrien. No matter how annoying she is, I understand where she’s coming from. She fears rejection. But that doesn’t remove how annoyed I am at her. Maybe sharing her feelings would be all that’s needed to light a spark between them two. But alas, we’ll never know. They have potential for GREAT CHEMISTRY like we see in oblivio but nothing will happen if marienette never gives Adrien a chance. Here's my theory: Adrien was enchanted by ladybug when he first saw her in action and was immediately attracted to her. And as we all know his feelings for her grew as the time passed and now he is supposedly in "love" with her. Now lets throw Marinette into this mix. She was one of his first friends and as we all know to Adrien, friends are really important. The blush that he had when he gave her the umbrella was from the happiness that he hadd earned a friend and he was attracted to her, just not like he was to Ladybug, but definitely a bit more than a friend eventhough he didn't knew it. As the time passed, he grew really comfortable with her and definitely got a crush on her(still not knowing that tho) because he was adamant of his feelings towards Ladybug and wanted to remain loyal to her. But as we can see towards the closing of season two, he had got rejected by Ladybug so many times, and that's when Kagami entered the scene. He got a bit attracted to her and as she was not his friend, he had nothing to lose on approaching her. If she accepted him that would have been fine and if she didn't then also it would have been ok. But when it comes to Marinette, he needs to be in denial of his feelings towards her, because if she doesn't reciprocates the feelings (which btw she had made very clear to Adrien that they are both "just friends", and that's true, only we know how she trully thinks of him, but when she talks to him- she makes it very clear that she doesn't. Yes, she does drops signs like getting flustured or stuttering, but he might think that he intimidates her (yes he is a bit dense) as he has seen Mari completely comfortable around others. So i think we cannot solely blame Adrien for saying "she's just a friend" because Mari does it too- she just doesn't voices it. Infact, Adrien has given many chances to Mari to know if she likes him even a bit. That is why, he keeps himself in denial to provide comfort to himself, as nobody would like to get rejected by someone that is special to them. Plus he also thinks that Mari truly likes Luka. So yeah, Adrien isn't blind guys, he's just protecting himself.

He's given her chances, like in Gorizilla when he basically says "oh no, now people think you're my girlfriend!" and then kind of waits for her reaction or in Troublemaker when he asked her about the "photographs in her room" and she said she's just a huge fan. It should be obvious she likes him, but the irony is Marinette doesn't stutter around Luka AT ALL so her attraction to Luka is more obvious. No wonder Adrien is confused. One thing though, how do we explain the Weredad episode in season 3 where Marinette reveals she's "in love" with Chat Noir? He seemed surprised, but kind of neutral about it, especially if you compare his reaction (in Chat Blanc) when he finds out Marinette is Ladybug. To me, he was sad about having to reject Marinette (and hurting his friend's feelings) but didn't seem conflicted about his own feelings for her vs Ladybug at all. He was actually relieved when Marinette said she didn't mean it like that at the end. I think the problem is just the writing of the show. We understand Marinette's feelings towards others very well, but with Adrien we never get a good sense of how he really feels about anyone other than Ladybug. I hope in Season 4 they develop that more...

He cares for her way too much and is concerned of her opinions.. As we can see in weredad, Chat says something along these lines that "I didn't think Chat Noir was her type, and she is in love with me? No girl has ever said that to me before." He thinks that nobody likes his true self-which is his Chat Noir self, thus he was surprised at the sudden declaration. When he fights Weredad he lets him beat him, cuz he feels that he deserves it for breaking Marinette's heart-- thus he likes her, but not like-like her THAT much as he likes or better loves, ladybug. So in my opinion, his behaviour towards her is quiet understandable. But yes, the writers should try to make it more clear as to what he feels about her, like there are instances where he treats her like a friend and then there are instances where he shows signs of more than just a friend- like in startrain, puppeteer 2 or despair bear- it does kind of gets confusing. And the point where Chat Blanc is concerned, he is obviously happy to find out that Marinette was Ladybug, because as I said he is definitely attracted towards her and no one could have been better than her to be his lady for Chat. (idk if this is making any sense, but I tried.😅)

I do wonder sometimes when LB flirts back - how far long the love square Journey she is in her mind with her "He's just my Partner" (as in super hero partner) with Cat Noir, she has at least outright rejected him - while at the same time not stopped him so much that he's discouraged him, heck she even was disappointed when he stopped flirting and disliked not getting the validation I feel. If Marinette lacks self confidence then Cat Noir telling her she's amazing ever moment as LB (mostly) can't hurt her confidence. This darn show needs more Marichat though or nothing is going to progress anywhere well - if they go for a half reveal and don't slip in some marichat first i'm going to be a bit annoyed.
Marinette contantly tells Adrien that she is not interested in him. To be honest, I do not think that Adrien is too dense to notice that he has feelings about Marinette. In the Origins episode, I would not blame him, since he only just met her and only just got her to not be aggressive to him. Going from, "this girl hate me" to "I have a crush on her" would be a bit much. That out of the way, once he gets to know her, why would he still call her "only a friend"? In Chat Blanc he states that he *always* felt like she was more than just a friend... so he must know! So maybe it is not him being dense, but Marinette's behavior? One thing I find sad is that no theorizer ever talks about how Marinette constantly tells Adrien that she is not interested in him. Yes, she may act differently, but how is a boy with little experience with other kids his age supposed to understand that? Her behavior is not exactly standard and often contradicts her word and even actions. Playing it safe by trusting the words she says, may be the best way for him to respond. Adrien was raised to be very mindful of other people and how they perceive him. He very rarely expresses what he wishes for and often deflects rather than make a statement that could hurt someone. He might feel more towards her than just friendship, but since she makes it so clear on several occasions that he is "just a friend" to her, he would be very unlikely to pursue that. So claiming "she is just a (very good) friend" might be the Adrien way of coping with a crush, that he knows is not welcome. That may be even more clear, when looking at ChatNoir. Chat allows Adrien to do things that he cannot do as a civilian. And there he pursures Ladybug despite her rejections. It shows that Adrien knows how to reognize a crush. And that he would very much like to pursue a crush, even if it is not reciprocated. But as a civilian he cannot do that. That is also why he goes for Kagami. Not only does she make clear that she is interested. Both their parents push for that relationship. And Adrien always tries very hard to please his father. Not only that. Notice how Adrien initially was not too interested in Kagami. That changed when he found out that she was also Ryouko. There he has a girl who is also a super hero (not Ladybug, but not too far away either), who is interested in him and who is approved by his father. What more could he wish for?

The only reason he didn't pursue that thought in Kwami Buster, was because they're not supposed to know, plus, there was the mission to tend to. Both times, he was happy with the thought that Marinette could be Ladybug. Even going as far as telling Marinette that he loves her, without checking to be sure first. Also the Line "What if Marinette were Ladybug?" This hints that Adrien thinks that if Marinette were in fact Ladybug, it would explain why he feels there's something more than just a friend. When he says "and now I know why" in Chat Blanc, it could also mean that the fact that Marinette is Ladybug is why he always thought about her as more than just a friend .

My theory is simple:
Adrien keeps on denying his feelings for Marinette because he likes ladybug and would feel like he was "cheating" on ladybug if he ever admitted to himself or acted upon his feelings towards Marinette. Even with Kagami it feels like he is distracted and holding back, because he is. He is distancing himself with his romantic feelings because he is so infatuated with ladybug and it would feel wrong for him to romantically be with someone else while be so "in love" with Ladybug. So I believe he def likes Marinette but will not act upon it as long as he loves Ladybug.

There are 2 more pieces of evidence.
1. When he backs up from kissing Marinette at the museum, he knew she was thinking that it was only a statue. It wouldn't have been fair for her to kiss him thinking she was kissing a statue. So he made that clear before "the worse" could happen.
2. Adrien basically ASKED Marinette for her permission to date Kagami.
In Glaciator, Adrien Knew the meaning of the ice-cream. In the last episode of s3, he asked MARINETTE to CHOOSE if he should share the ice-cream with her or with Kagami and she decided to let them date.
3. Adrien suspected more than once that Marinette might like him.
In the s.Valentine day episode when Marinette forgets to sign her heart shaped poem, when he reads it, his mind immediately goes to think to compare it to Marinette's notes. Then he says... "but there's Luka, it must be a coincidence".
Besides, as Chat, he's been in Marinette's room when it was covered with pictures of him (with hearts drawn around his face and not around the clothes). So he for sure sospects it. When he confronts her about it, she denies it.
4. He asked her multiple times of her opinion of chat, because obviously he want to see if she likes him. She always denies it, obviously.
So really. Adrien really did the obvious thing.
This comment is so underrated, I totally agree with you! I also think he actually notices but Marinette is just too hesitant and has lost a bunch of opportunities that Adrien himself has given directly to her... He's just way to polite and respectful, and even doubtful it obviously has everything to do with the isolation he has suffered, doesn't fight for any love because maybe in the bottom of his heart he thinks he doesn't deserve any, due to the fact that not even his father wants to spend time with him, and that being the exact opposite of his warm kind self hasn't worked out either with Ladybug when he's the flirty Chat Noir we all love, maybe too aggressive to be liked by Marinette that way, he doesn't know what else to do because he's just 13-14 years old and boy is that age really confusing, especially with those issues and no maternal figure to ask for advice... First of all, Adrien barely had any friends so he is not that experienced in friendships and social cues. And whenever he gets the suspicion that Marinette likes him, she denies it and brings their relationship backwards. In frozer, she declined his idea of going skating with her alone. In puppeteer 2, she makes Adrien think she hates him. And her unwillingness to be open with him puts a roadblock in their friendship. How is their relationship supposed to go anywhere if Marinette can barely talk to him without stuttering. Plus she hangs around Luka; in stormy weather 2, luka is one of the reasons Adrien states for why Marinette can’t possibly like him. Marinette keeps coming up with excuses and basically outright rejecting Adrien.
No matter how annoying she is, I understand where she’s coming from. She fears rejection. But that doesn’t remove how annoyed I am at her. Maybe sharing her feelings would be all that’s needed to light a spark between them two. But alas, we’ll never know. As I said (if u can read), I believe Marinette is PARTLY responsible. I am NOT entirely blaming. I just think people need to cut Adrien some slack. He was raised in an environment where he wouldn’t get much experience socializing and understand social cues. On the other hand, Marinette keeps denying her crush whenever Adrien remotely suspects she likes her, like Troublemaker. And she can barely have a normal convo with him.
And about Marinette’s crush: I think we’re BEYOND a normal crush. She’s at stalker level. She’s almost obsessed with him. And Adrien hasn’t made any moves on Mari because he’s still in love with Ladybug. He’s to blinded by his own love to see Marinette. But she also doesn’t like Chat Noir romantically, so they’re even. But the difference between them both is Adrien confessed, got rejected, and sealed with that rejection. Marinette, on the other hand, hasn’t confessed AT ALL to him. Here's my theory:
Adrien was enchanted by ladybug when he first saw her in action and was immediately attracted to her. And as we all know his feelings for her grew as the time passed and now he is supposedly in "love" with her.
Now lets throw Marinette into this mix. She was one of his first friends and as we all know to Adrien, friends are really important. The blush that he had when he gave her the umbrella was from the happiness that he hadd earned a friend and he was attracted to her, just not like he was to Ladybug, but definitely a bit more than a friend eventhough he didn't knew it.
As the time passed, he grew really comfortable with her and definitely got a crush on her(still not knowing that tho) because he was adamant of his feelings towards Ladybug and wanted to remain loyal to her. But as we can see towards the closing of season two, he had got rejected by Ladybug so many times, and that's when Kagami entered the scene. He got a bit attracted to her and as she was not his friend, he had nothing to lose on approaching her. If she accepted him that would have been fine and if she didn't then also it would have been ok.
But when it comes to Marinette, he needs to be in denial of his feelings towards her, because if she doesn't reciprocates the feelings (which btw she had made very clear to Adrien that they are both "just friends", and that's true, only we know how she trully thinks of him, but when she talks to him- she makes it very clear that she doesn't. Yes, she does drops signs like getting flustured or stuttering, but he might think that he intimidates her (yes he is a bit dense) as he has seen Mari completely comfortable around others. I also think that he pranks her or winks at her to let her know that she can be comfortable around him.), thus he has a lot to lose.
So i think we cannot solely blame Adrien for saying "she's just a friend" because Mari does it too- she just doesn't voices it. Infact, Adrien has given many chances to Mari to know if she likes him even a bit.
That is why, he keeps himself in denial to provide comfort to himself, as nobody would like to get rejected by someone that is special to them. Plus he also thinks that Mari truly likes Luka. So yeah, Adrien isn't blind guys, he's just protecting himself.

I love your theory, and I think you're right. He's given her chances, like in Gorizilla when he basically says "oh no, now people think you're my girlfriend!" and then kind of waits for her reaction or in Troublemaker when he asked her about the "photographs in her room" and she said she's just a huge fan. It should be obvious she likes him, but the irony is Marinette doesn't stutter around Luka AT ALL so her attraction to Luka is more obvious. No wonder Adrien is confused.
One thing though, how do we explain the Weredad episode in season 3 where Marinette reveals she's "in love" with Chat Noir? He seemed surprised, but kind of neutral about it, especially if you compare his reaction (in Chat Blanc) when he finds out Marinette is Ladybug. To me, he was sad about having to reject Marinette (and hurting his friend's feelings) but didn't seem conflicted about his own feelings for her vs Ladybug at all. He was actually relieved when Marinette said she didn't mean it like that at the end.
I think the problem is just the writing of the show. We understand Marinette's feelings towards others very well, but with Adrien we never get a good sense of how he really feels about anyone other than Ladybug. I hope in Season 4 they develop that more...

He cares for her way too much and is concerned of her opinions.. As we can see in weredad, Chat says something along these lines that "I didn't think Chat Noir was her type, and she is in love with me? No girl has ever said that to me before." He thinks that nobody likes his true self-which is his Chat Noir self, thus he was surprised at the sudden declaration. When he fights Weredad he lets him beat him, cuz he feels that he deserves it for breaking Marinette's heart-- thus he likes her, but not like-like her THAT much as he likes or better loves, ladybug. So in my opinion, his behaviour towards her is quiet understandable.
But yes, the writers should try to make it more clear as to what he feels about her, like there are instances where he treats her like a friend and then there are instances where he shows signs of more than just a friend- like in startrain, puppeteer 2 or despair bear- it does kind of gets confusing.
And the point where Chat Blanc is concerned, he is obviously happy to find out that Marinette was Ladybug, because as I said he is definitely attracted towards her and no one could have been better than her to be his lady for Chat.

I do wonder sometimes when LB flirts back - how far long the love square Journey she is in her mind with her "He's just my Partner" (as in super hero partner) with Cat Noir, she has at least outright rejected him - while at the same time not stopped him so much that he's discouraged him, heck she even was disappointed when he stopped flirting and disliked not getting the validation I feel. To be honest, I do not think that Adrien is too dense to notice that he has feelings about Marinette. In the Origins episode, I would not blame him, since he only just met her and only just got her to not be aggressive to him. Going from, "this girl hate me" to "I have a crush on her" would be a bit much.
That out of the way, once he gets to know her, why would he still call her "only a friend"?
In Chat Blanc he states that he *always* felt like she was more than just a friend... so he must know! So maybe it is not him being dense, but Marinette's behavior?
One thing I find sad is that no theorizer ever talks about how Marinette constantly tells Adrien that she is not interested in him.
Yes, she may act differently, but how is a boy with little experience with other kids his age supposed to understand that?
Her behavior is not exactly standard and often contradicts her word and even actions.
Playing it safe by trusting the words she says, may be the best way for him to respond. Adrien was raised to be very mindful of other people and how they perceive him. He very rarely expresses what he wishes for and often deflects rather than make a statement that could hurt someone.
He might feel more towards her than just friendship, but since she makes it so clear on several occasions that he is "just a friend" to her, he would be very unlikely to pursue that. So claiming "she is just a (very good) friend" might be the Adrien way of coping with a crush, that he knows is not welcome.
That may be even more clear, when looking at ChatNoir. Chat allows Adrien to do things that he cannot do as a civilian. And there he pursures Ladybug despite her rejections. It shows that Adrien knows how to reognize a crush. And that he would very much like to pursue a crush, even if it is not reciprocated. But as a civilian he cannot do that.
That is also why he goes for Kagami. Not only does she make clear that she is interested. Both their parents push for that relationship. And Adrien always tries very hard to please his father.
Not only that. Notice how Adrien initially was not too interested in Kagami. That changed when he found out that she was also Ryouko. There he has a girl who is also a super hero (not Ladybug, but not too far away either), who is interested in him and who is approved by his father. What more could he wish for?
