Man, watching you pilot UW control vs other controls is always a treat. I know there are people who love the aggro all the things decks and being inclusive with the whole meta is part of your revenue stream....but watching really good control matchups is SS tier.
Jace Perfected Mind has to be one of the best designs in recent years. Very cool to build a deck around it, fair in most cases, and cool loyalty abilities
The game vs ninjas, you can do your combat stuff (e.g.: channel Eiganjo, Wandering Emperor) before blocks to prevent them from using ninjutsu. Creatures only become unblocked after declare blockers (even if there's literally nothing that could even hypothetically be assigned to block them), and you can't ninjutsu an attacker that isn't yet unblocked. EDIT: You specifically mentioned it in the video. I'd like to take this moment to state how satisfying it is to watch someone who is willing to brew creative decks but still has a strong grasp of game mechanics. Many of the more interesting content creators know surprisingly little about corner-case stuff like this. Sometimes it seems like competence beats the creativity out of people. :c
Love seeing standard bo1 bc of the stakes and time commitment, and I love seeing you play what you like most. I get those aren’t usually the same vids but this one was nice to see.

Just lost to some crazy bant self-mill nonsense. Any chance you're gonna do a video on that? Would love to see a playable deck of sorts, seems fun. How he won is milling himself out with 3x Jace's and thereby pumping his slogurk up to 20 power. (Here are the card's I spotted in his deck, in no particular order: otherworldly gaze, 3x skrelvs, 2x willow geists, thopterix, 2x rona's, animists might, 2x kami of whispered hopes, 4x slogurks, 2x Wrenn and Realmbreaker, 3x grolnoks, 3x jace's ... .Lands: spara's headq, 3x plaza of heroes, 3x otawara, 3x eiganjo, boseiju and the rest is the usual rare doublecolour lands)
I don't like playing control, or playing against control, but I know it's part of a healthy metagame, and if nothing else these videos are great for learning how a control mage thinks as a midrange player
It always seems like control needs a specific density of answer cards. There really isn't much difference between "control decks aren't playable in this meta" and "control decks beat EVERYTHING else." 2-3 strong cards change the entire meta around them, and the control shell is the one with the most chance of screwing up an entire meta with just a few card changes. I personally think Farewell and The Wandering Emperor, both in this deck, are 2 of the strongest cards in Standard, they tend to simply take over games no matter what was played before them. "Farewell, I win no matter what" seems to be all too common.

@CGB Frst and foremost thanks for all the content -- I have made Mythic multiple times thanks in large part to your videos. In this deck curious why no Field of Ruin or Mirrex, I find in control mirrors if they drop a Mirren T4 it is very hard to deal with as they can hold countes up and EOT drop a toxic 1/1. Seems like we need some answer
with soul partition you can bounce your own stuff, to protect it without paying the cost(so sneaky double jace is an option) Also you can counter your opponents spell when they replay it. All around better, more versatile card.
that final matchup with arcane bombardment their deck confused me a little because they run removal spells where you could just burn. When I saw them discard burn down the house and brotherhoods end that quickly i thought it was a tiny bit sus of them being arcane bombardment. Thats one of the problems of running that deck because it extremely televises graveyard matters very quickly - the kind of deck you run when you discard only instants and sorceries. This is why i run a crap ton more mana rocks with my bombardment deck. Course i say this like that would fix the jace milling you problem. No way we ever would ever win that match up unless we have some way of preventing mill from happening lmao but the point i'm making here is that deck had some issues that i wouldn't have in my deck. Needs more explosive singularity.
Is farmhand better than restoration simply because it comes down on turn 2?? I run restorations over farmhand because it provides a bit more of a threat.
Is there any way you could modernize the Urza Meld control deck now that Invoke Despair and Bankbuster are gone? My mediocre list has been doing pretty well, so I was hoping the one in best of one could help make it better
Love the deck but i keep loosing to superfriends and basicly any decks that run plainswakers that make tokens because i have 0 board presence to remove them and eventualy i lose to ultimates
All Will Be One had some legitimately fun and cool designs on PW's, with Jace and Koth being my favorites. I honestly love all the PW designs from that set (yeah, even Nahiri is neat, equipment themes just suck, sadly).
Does the matchmaker tend to match UW control with other decks with blue more frequently? I was expecting to see more aggro and mono black decks get destroyed. 😀
Arcane Bombardment was bad before Invoke Despair was banned, which ironically was also the best sorcery you could play in standard. So basically Bombardment was bad because of Invoke and now it's bad because there is no Invoke.
Wandering empire priority is always weird. When you play it you should have priority immediately but weirdly it passes to oppenent. Withought it being pkayed in a format with split second planeswalker removal it doesnt mattee normally
Faced this deck a lot lately, absolutely hate it. The only fun part when playing against it is when you double cast breach the multiverse, mill/still all their Jaces and then mill them to death, give them a taste of their own medicine.
Same deck, 2 days playing, 10 - 15... It's really by chance how this goes, when the shuffler is against you, you just have to endure the usual 2 days of frustration and resist from desinstall the game.
So happy to hear I wasn't the only one. I was amazed how this and another deck I use both have 27 lands and somehow I flooded on 7 out of 10 games today with this deck, while with the other I hardly managed to get to the 5th land LOL
I’ll win 6 game straight playing Blue white control with 28 lands. Then the next 3 games I’ll keep a 3 Land hand going 2nd & not draw a land in the next 7 draws & lose to agro. Shuffle is rigged
I won 10 games straight with my reanimator, now i cant win anymore, i draw countless lands each match while i get slowpoked. First matches i faced a lot of aggro decks, now its back to control or other reanimators. You know something is wrong when a 140 Cards Reanimator beats you in every aspect with flawless pulls.

It never ceases to amaze me that people like CGB's personality. I know they (you) do, it just seems incredibly strange to me. I'm curious to see if anyone here feels the same way. *You might wonder what I'm doing here, given my feelings for the host. Well, I enjoy watching MTG content and I don't like many creators. Those I do like don't upload that often or sometimes play formats I don't care for. At least this guy's a solid player, even if I'm usually forced to mute him. Still, I occasionally speak my mind here because I can and because it even helps the guy out, which I'm okay with.
I'm kind of the same. The way he talks down every deck (but UW control) as a mindless pilot, reeks of a superiority complex, and I can't stand it at times. He makes good content, and I'll always watch good MTG content. But I can't agree with how judgmental and dismissive he is. Maybe it's all a joke, but even if it is, I certainly don't find it funny.
It's definitely a joke, he's said several times that he's bad at mono red aggro because it's actually hard to pilot well. Also, watch any time he pilots mono red, he absolutely loves it haha. He's basically playing a character most of the time

Even if it's meant to be a joke, jokes are known to carry some (or much) truth in them. I just don't like the guy, that's all. I understand most people do and I respect that. I still watch his stuff and even leave comments, so I'm sure he'll live. Plenty of people dislike me as well, that's life for ya.

soul partition is really fun to use with a make disappear in hand. Remove their turn and make them pay more for it then cancel it next turn.

UW control is my go to deck, always. Might not win all, but it's incredibly rewarding to play.
