I was young once. Crazy, I know. Back when I was young I used to get games at the bottom of a cereal box. Many games that I got at the bottom of a cereal box were from the Pajama Sam series. A point and click edutainment series by Humongous Entertainment. Pajama Sam was a staple of my; and many people's childhoods. So I decided it would be nice to give the entire series a retrospective. I can't wait for people to tell me that I forgot about Pajama Sam 4. Trust me guy's, I'm pretending to forget it to make the revelation and the final few minutes come as a surprise to people who aren't overly familiar with the series. But people will still comment that I forgot 4, because subtly continues to be the black market contraband of the internet and people don't know to read the description. Pajama Sam then, does it hold up? Let's find out.

Humongous was my childhood. I live in Israel and we didn't have all of these games, so I didn't know there were even more than one entry to each series. I grew up playing Pajama Sam 2, Putt Putt Joins the Circus and Freddie Fish 3 thinking each were a stand alone game and only about 6 years ago realized the whole series were online. Ron Gilbert was a great pioneer of adventure games.

"the only time I have anger issues is when people tell me I have anger issues."
I relate to that so much. Seriously, if my dear old mother would just keep her mouth shut, she'd see just how much better my 'attitude' can be.

The music for the Pajama Sam games actually isn’t MIDI, they are full-band recordings. The reason they sound “submerged in water” is the level of compression that was needed to fit them on the CD-ROM. The music for the third game, by George “The Fat Man” Sanger, is now available on Bandcamp in high quality. It’s really fresh to hear it that way and shows how much care was put into these games.

Saw this a while back. Definitely the best episode of Season 4 for TGX Game Reviews. I like how you compare and contrast each individual game, but the conclusion statement really hit home and tied into the rest of the video quite well.

The Pajama Sam trilogy was a piece of my childhood and would play on my pc multiple times
Pajama Sam 4 was a game I’ve never heard of until yesterday, so hearing someone talk about it was like heading into unknown territory

For those who are wondering about the Jailer’s voice actor, it’s Scott Burns who voiced Bowser in several Mario games and Beltino Toad from Star Fox Assault (like TGX said)

As the jailer, Scott Burns is doing an impression of 70's comedian Paul Lynde.

Not sure about who plays the jailer, but his voice seems to be modeled after mid 20th century comedian Paul Linde who voiced templeton the rat in the 1973 animated film charlotte’s web. His voice was parodied several times in 90’s and 2000’s cartoons such as Escargoon in Kirby Right Back At Ya and Roger in American Dad

At 33:03, the voice actor's name is Scott Burns. If you check the Humongous Entertainment wiki, he's done a lot of voice acting for the other Humongous Entertainment games (I recognized his voice because it was the same as Snappy Turtle from the first Freddi Fish game).
I initially thought it was Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur from Bewitched & the voice of Templeton the Rat from Charlotte's Web) but it seems that Scott Burns can just do a really good impression of Lynde.

I really don't agree with how harsh you were on the third game. I always returned to that one, because I thought it was the best, most classic of the Pajama Sam games, and the art? The background art was truly beautiful, with extremely tight compositions that efficiently tell so much story, the harmonious purple and yellow palettes and unique hard edged shading (no lazy gradients, instead they went the extra mile and it looks great!) with thick and thin, comic-book-like line art. The way it cleverly avoids one point perspective or using any straight lines. So much added depths with really, really tight shapes. The exaggerated stupidity of everything. It's truly one of the most beautiful art styles I've ever seen. I think the third Pajama Sam game has the best art of any Humongous game, I have to say. It really sticks in your mind and haunts your dreams.
I also think you're taking the soundtrack for granted, just because it was compressed into bad quality on the CD. I usually look past bad quality and appreciate the creativity behind it. I just think there's more good than bad in this case.
But why didn't you think the writing was funny on the third game? It definitely made me laugh the most with that manners class, those plumbers' dialogue and the guy who thinks he's wise for knowing which fork the cheese fork is.
There's clever things about the programming behind it too that are just really. . . Well, you have to understand about programming haha. They really went the extra mile. There's a lot to appreciate about these games.
The puzzles you called illogical are purposefully that way. The programmers called it 'moon logic' (it's fun to figure out because it's such stupid logic that could only exist on the moon). It made adventure games harder and funnier. I didn't get stuck the way you did, but it did make me laugh a lot, and is consistent with the art style/writing (representing something the way I kid would see it). I loved that so much.
If you can't suspend your disbelief for this, you will care about things like '"how can the physics work of a forty pound boy tripping over his cape and propelling himself onto the red button?" If they have the (right) spirit, an animator does things like this on purpose! Make the stupid look believable for a while.
The animation, I've heard, was 'painstaking' and 'a labor of love'. It was drawn on paper then scanned and retraced on the computer. Maybe there aren't as many frames as there are in a movie, but do we care if it's super smooth when it's so much better than the effort put into any other game? So much less jarring than modern puppet animation.
I think it's all too subjective and you made it sound too much like the third game was actually objectively flawed. It was nice how you went through each game, but just seemed a little too unnecessarily negative sometimes where it might not have been merited. Anyway I appreciate the examination of these old games!
Also, to the end speech: My little brother liked these games so much when I showed them to him, that he asked the kids at his school why they didn't know about them. (Because they don't have older siblings). But I do think they stand the test of time for this reason, and there's not much comparable in the market for kids these days. Have you seen the other apps on Google Play that the kids are into? :(
I wish kids still got games with good art, narrative and programming! They deserve it.

Actually the brand died because a shit company bought them out and made terrible decisions that caused them to make sub par games. Fun fact EVERY game company that was also bought by that same game company crashed and burned.

    Three things:
    1: I love this series.
2: I'm rather surprised there's no Sam x Florette fanart floating around.
3: I can't be the only one who imagined a Star Wars/Humongous Junior Adventure scenario after that Obi Wan reference, right?
I know I said three things, but here's a fourth and fifth thing anyway.
4: Screw Life Is Rough When You Lose Your Stuff!
5: LIRWYLYS actually AUTOSAVES, which is what those pauses between screens are, the game autosaving! In a game that has the option to SAVE AND LOAD! WTF!?
