In fairness to the overly long Venom plot... this portrayal of Venom is fucking perfect and every version of Venom should aim to be exactly what this Venom is.
I hate to break this thing about the PS1 sound quality, but the "ungodly compressed" music is the standard for all versions. The average quality for the in-game music is 11525 Hz with the highest being 22050 Hz for just two tracks.
If the imposter Spider-Man was Carnage maybe, but I find it hard to believe that Mysterio would know to do that or know who Eddie is or what he look like.

Just adding this in, the fog doesn't mutate people. Mysterio does say it's "preparing everyone for symbiosis" my best guess is making everyone suitable for any symbiote to bond to them.
I'm among those who LOVED this game in my childhood and 1) holy shit i completely forgot how goddamn rockin the soundtrack is so thank you for that reminder 2) I did not remember at ALL how janky the plot and pacing was hot damn Solid work, dude! 🤘

Submariners not a Spider-Man villian. Hes his own character and is essentially the marvel equivalent of aquaman but better, and he was created first. Also hes behind some crazy decisions in the marvel universe. Like forming the illuminati and such
People have probably told you by now but you can center the camera behind you in this game by quickly tapping L1. It's still not as graceful as it should be but you would have avoided some annoying situations by using it. Great video regardless and I think most of your points still hold up. When I replay this game for nostalgia sake there are too many levels where I go "ugh I hate this part". I suppose that's inevitable for a game that's trying to be so creative that it constantly wants to introduce new elements. I just wish it had more levels that resembled the intro level. Just casually swinging around the city beating thugs every now and then.

Not to mention out of the whole Symbiote invasion with Doc Ock wanting to rule over it... What the hell was Mysterio getting out of the whole deal? I mostly enjoyed it for the gags, particularly with Venom. But otherwise I do think that it probably could've capitalized on some of its set up rather than derailing for a bit despite the tangential relation between each villain (Except for Scorpion and the Jade Syndicate I have no idea what the hell their angle was in all this) Gameplay wise its simple but effective and while the enemy variety and the way you combat foes might border on the repetitious side as you can use the same methods of attack you can to anyone else I think you have enough moves at your disposal to make your own fun provided you've learned how to mix up your moves. I can't say I had issues with the controls or camera, especially since the camera phases through the roof letting you get a better view of indoor rooms. Maybe this is just a PS1 thing? Or maybe its a flaw I just overlook. Also more games need a What If mode.

I've wanted to try this game for years, I grew up with enter electro which I still never bothered to beat. People always have praised the 1st game and thanks to your review I'll know what to expect when I finally get it. I loved the PS4 game so going back to some classic PS1 will be awesome.
Much as I love ps4 Spider-Man I’m very excited to play a Spider-Man game with such a rocking sound track. Being available for the Dreamcast is also a nice bonus
My parents bought me this game in 2001. In my country back then it was available only as an illegal version, cuz people were selling ps 1, which was modified with chip already, so I couldn’t even run an official game on my ps 1. I didn’t even know that my ps 1 was illegal until internet era entered my town. Pirates were selling illegal copies full price and made a lot of money on that stuff. I was so surprised when I realised all that stuff; I was sure that I played legally cuz my parents paid money for games. By the way, spider-man game was a huge part of my childhood, but I always wished I could walk through the streets and fly free.
Fun fact: on the PC version there's a glitch in the Venom chase level that not only is impossible to avoid but also makes the level unbeatable on hard mode, it's still beatable on normal mode and below though.
there's a glitch after the "chase through the building" gag sequence on all platforms where spider man gets stuck on a wall for a few seconds before the controls unlock, is that what you mean?
This was a great review! I remember having this game on PC as a kid but never finishing it in part of it being way too hard by the helicopter chase section and last year stopped at the Venom train section because of audio issues with reDream. I have to say that the way the game controls can just be painful at times, but other than that and the points in your review, I heavily agree with you!
I completely see your point. This was my favourite game spider-man for many years until I replayed it recently, and I was really shocked to find it frustrating and not nearly as enjoyable as before. There are some things you don't notice when you are young I guess.

(even though the time bomb aspect of the game...I hated it + the hard mode was an ASS!!! p.s. the tunes are rocking because the composer did Genesis games music before...he was known for most memorable tracks on the system!

I know Ghosts' sales numbers weren't great, and that it was mostly a mediocre (at best) game overall, but it's because of Neversoft that we got the best COD extra game mode ever: Extinction. Extinction was fucking awesome, and I DARE anyone to try and convince me otherwise.

For the plot hole of framing spiderman and hurting eddy Brock maybe carnage could sense the symbiote and so they knew to target eddy specifically.
