You are now the official candle guru!!!!!!!!!! You make it so simple. You should be the author of "candle making for dummies"
Haha strangely...I'm kinda working on something like thst. Thanks so much! :)
If it wasn't for the fact that his voice is so calming and soothing, I wouldn't have watched this. This is Grade 7 math in Ontario, Canada. It is scary that people are making things that catch fire on purpose, and can't do basic math? God Save our planet.
I agree!! He makes it soooo engaging and easy to learn. Thank you!!
Can you please tell me where he got the 17.44 from I been lost since that part and why he divide 1.09
I want to learn how to make candles as a business. The fear that I have is so overwhelming because I’m afraid of failing, but every time I watch your videos, the motivation comes right back. I hope to make you proud, and my first scent will be named after you ❤Keep teaching, because the content that you share, truly blesses others!!!
Fear is normal. Experience breeds confidence. Confidence fights fear. Give it time. 😉

Amazing amazing, amazing video!!! Thank you for the visual samples. I see the light at the end of the tunnel ✨️ ✨️ Math can be intimidating, but this video made it easier to understand.
Glad to help! ;)
By far the most useful and helpful video I’ve seen so far (and I’ve seen a lot) 😂 some make the math soooo complicated and I wanted to thank you for breaking it down in a very easy way!
Thanks so much Maria. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much for this video!! It was very helpful! Let me know where I can locate the cheat sheet - I would love to have a copy 😇
Thank you so much Wade. Math was definitely not my favorite subject, I have always used the 1st method, and just poured wax melts with my left over wax, so seeing the 2nd method was super helpful today. Thank you!! ❤️ 😊
❤ np!
I signed up for Skillshare the last time you ran your promo. I'm really enjoying it.
Awesome. Yes I use it all the time. Lol
Thanks sO much for your generously sharing your professional expertise. Always learn very much from your exceptionally detailed videos. Thank you for all your servanthearted detailed work. Grateful wanna be candlemaker. Mucho Gracias
❤❤
Thank you so much for this video, I hate math and didn't even clue in that I would need to use it to start my candle-making journey. You made it very easy to follow, and I appreciate the examples and simple, easy-to-follow instructions. Thank you for being awesome, and for making these videos. (And a hello from Alberta, Canada! I'm glad I found your channel!)
Awesome. Glad it was helpful. I worry I might add more confusion by I tried to simplify yet also provide details. Lol
Question
I've been using a pre-made slab of coconut, soy, parrafin blend for my clear vessels as it doesn't frost at all and i love it but i always have 70% of the vessel forming massive wetspots, even pouring cooler @130 (room temp 75) I've also tried correcting with a heat gun but it only makes it worse after it cools.
Do you have any suggestions or advice on a better wax for clear vessels that doesn't shrink as severe during curing time but also doesn't frost?
I know wetspots can happen but for how severe my wetspots are I just can't sell them and have to switch back to my 464 which has near perfect Jar adhesion, no wet spots but it frosts so much.
Is there a better wax you would suggest for clear vessels with great adhesion, minimal wet spots during curing and can tolerate dye without frosting as much as 464 and where to buy it
Thanks!
Nice vid..
Thanks!
Brilliant, thanks. I'm just at the testing stage and did wonder about finding fill amount needed for containers. I was going to weigh with water, but that probably would have been way off...
Formula for total fill is so helpful too.
Cheers 🙃
Np!
This was literally the most helpful candle video I've ever seen. I've been doing method one and it's such a waste, but I didn't know how to fix it. Thank you!!
☺️ Thanks! Glad you liked it!
Got my free month 👍 thanks 🙏
❤
Thank you for this video. I am new to candle making and im curious to your method #2 how did you get 1 in the 1.09
Learning so much with your videos!!! You’re awesome
I put your video in transcript sometimes in order to understand everything and don’t miss anything because my native language is Spanish !!!! Muchas gracias maestro 🎉🙏🏼🕯🥹
😁 awesome. Thanks so much.
Not only are you extremely talented and your instructions are easy to understand and follow. Your funny and entertaining to watch.
Thanks for the tutorials. I will definitely try my hand and candle making. For myself. And maybe a friend or two. Congratulations on your new store🎉.
Thanks so much 😊 Appreciate that. :)
Awesome breakdown on the math formula! I cheat and use and The Candle Maker Calculator App but it's important to know how to do the math too. I snagged a spot on the Skillshare offer, thanks for setting that up!
Thanks Alyssa. I don't trust apps a lot so I always do the math when creating my recipes. Then craftybase keeps ny recipe and never have to do it again. But I've seen apps spit out strange results before. Makes me nervous. 😁🤪
Thank you
I was doing the first example but recently I learned example 2 but in grams so I had to covert oz into grams so now that you explained into oz it’s AMAZING!!! Same though but I like more in oz than grams
Thank you so very much Sr!!!! 🙏🏼🙏🏼🕯
No problem. Yes it's the same either way. You can use whatever unit of measurement you want (as long as it's by weight)
Aloha Wade! First, a little background... I started testing in 2018 and selling in 2019 at local fairs and venues... 8mo later the pandemic hit and I was derailed not knowing it was going to last this long so now I am pivoting and getting back to business selling online. I am still in the testing phase due to moving and loosing all my notes from before... but you know what?! It was the Universes way of making me start from scratch so that I could find YOU!
There have been a few things that did not make sense to me at all in my original research and as a new candle maker I did not know to or even how to question it! I came across your videos about 5mo ago and they have made a HUGE difference and I want to thank you for being a 'nerd' like me and really getting down to the details of the how and why! You have been a true blessing!
So I have a question about the FO load method 2 calculation. In step 3 you say to take the 16oz and divide by 1.09 to get the amount of wax needed... I was confused how you came up with adding the '1' to the .09 FO load...
Using your example this is what I do... I take the wax weight 16oz minus the FO load 1.44oz to get the total wax oz's needed = 14.56 then I add the FO 1.44 to the wax 14.56 = 16oz's total liquid. I know there is only a fraction of a difference between your method and what I have been doing does that make a difference?
Hi Moki - Thanks for the backstory and all the positive feedback. I definitely appreciate it so much! Happy to help. Now regarding your question about FO formula:
- I didn't come up with the "1" myself. That is just the math to find the parts of a whole when you need the parts to be a specific percentage. If you want to know what percentage of something added to something else AND for it to equal a specific amount you divide that by 1+the percentage (in decimal form). I know that sounds like it makes no sense, but.... it does. Its just hard to explain in words. Lol. Let's try this explanation although it might make things more confusing:
Let's say you want A(wax) + B(fragrance) to equal 100. BUT, you need B to equal 9% of A. Really what you are saying is A + .09A = 100.
The .09A is the same as B in this example. In candle making, A is the wax and B is the fragrance oil. Remember, you are trying to find 9% of the wax because fragrance load is based on the % your wax can hold. If my wax can hold 9% I need to know what 9% of my wax is.
This is a long winded explanation of Method 2 to understand how it really works. But, just doing method 2 is much simpler. Lol.
The problem with the the previous way of doing it (the method you have been using I think) is this:
- When you start with wax amount you want to use (aka 16oz) and then take FO % of that number (let's say 9% or .09)., you then do 16 x .09 = 1.44 (FO). You subtract that from wax amount which leaves 14.56 wax. So yes, 1.44 + 14.56 does equal 16oz. But, now check your math. You no longer are using a 9% fragrance load. Remember FO load is based on your wax. So now 1.44 / 14.56 = .099 (rounded up is 10%). You thought you were using 9% FO load but you are actually using a 10% FO load. This is the big problem with calculating everything and then subtracting it out. So you end up with a total fill of 16oz which is great, but you used a10% FO load instead of 9%
Now, consider method 2 I showed in the video. It is more accurate and very easy. Using the same numbers as above:
16oz Total with a 9% FO load
16 / 1.09 = 14.68 (wax)
16 - 14.68 = 1.32 (FO)
double check your math: 1.32 / 14.68 = .09 or 9%
You can see now that this method actually keeps your 9% FO load in tact AND gives you the exact total fill you need.
You asked earlier if it matters since the numbers seem similar. It may seem that way, but your FO load jumped an entire % which is enough to possible change wicking, HT, performance, etc. Plus... what if you were already at the max load a wax can hold. Incorrect math would put you over the max.
Hope all this helps. :)
This was, by far, the most important, & informative video I've seen of yours! You should have or could have been a teacher. I'm a Sociologist, & you have such a calm, mellow, patient, & thorough way of explaining these Pre-Algebra formulas. Thank you for your sweet demeanor 🙂
Thanks so much Christopher. I appreciate that. I like teaching as much as I like doing. :)
This is the best video I've seen! Great for those who are (like me) challenged in the math department! Thank you so much for sharing all of this very valuable and helpful information. You are amazing. Also, are you related to the Baldwin family? :)
Thanks a million Wade, I owe you a cup of Java. This info was heaven-sent. I'm going to give it a go to this candle business thing.
❤👌
Thanks so much for this. At age 54 and a bit old school, this was extremely helpful for me. I am not good at math but when taught can pick it up. So thank you for this.
No problem!
thank you so much, love from india❤
