      If it wasn't for the fact that his voice is so calming and soothing, I wouldn't have watched this. This is Grade 7 math in Ontario, Canada. It is scary that people are making things that catch fire on purpose, and can't do basic math? God Save our planet.

    you sir! are a god! im from NZ and everywhere ive searched it was always conflicting info, or do this, do that, try this, try that, ive only started dabbling in candles, and using your measuring method is completely different to what the supplier has advertised on their website, a recommended fill volume, with the usage of 250g of wax with a 10% fragrance load, it was recommended at 30ml, Your way seems sooo much easier to understand! Cant wait to try making a candle using your measuring method instead! Thank you!

    Thank you for the formulas.
    Thank you for the explanations. When you said the phrase “The one thing you never thought you would be doing when it comes to candles.”
    I said kind of begrudgingly said…Math.
    Then you said math.
    Before finding this gem 💎 video I learn about density, mass, volume and specific gravity.
    I learned about myself that sometimes I just need a good reason to learn something.
    Math is explaining a lot.
    I bet my high school math teachers would faint if they knew about my new interest in math.

    See here I am thinking that I am a pro already. I was doing so much tweaking and using my mathematical skills on how to get the perfect amount of wax to fragrance ratio for my 12oz and 7oz candles. You just made my life so much easier LOL. My formulas were looking like tally marks. This is so much simpler I will be doing this ASAP. This, is going to be really long. For my measurements I will find out what was the total amount of both fragrance oil and wax together then I will start subtracting wax amount and then adding on the fragrance oil until I matched up to what I needed.

    Apologies if this is somewhat of a dumb question but I've been trying to figure this out... what do you do for the labeling when your weight is not an even number? For example my fill weight is 7.9oz. Do you totally put that exact number, try to get the fill to an even number, or round down?

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Not dumb question at all. Rounding is fine, probably safer to either 1) round down or 2) just add .1oz more of fill so you can just make it an even 8. That's easiest if you have room. BUUUT it's also totally fine to say 7.9oz. I know plenty that do that. :

  • @dustinmetzger

    Another thing I didn’t see you touch on is that with method one your final fragrance inclusion doesn’t end up being a true 9%, but rather 8.28% because it’s 1.44 oz fragrance to 17.44 oz total volume. This is a small but important distinction that trips up beginning chemists and microbiologists all the time too, since in those fields a difference of a fraction of a percent can throw the whole process off.
    As long as you’re sticking with one method for your formulas it can work just fine, but that’s a critical difference you’ll need to account for if switching between the two calculation methods.

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I didn't touch on that specifically because it depends. Most waxes list a % FO they can hold IN the wax. The example you mentioned is what % of the combination is FO. Which is different. My recommendation is for people to choose one and stick with it. But when most companies/manufacturers say 10% load. They mean 10% in addition to the wax (which was the two methods I mentioned assumed). If someone was wanting 10% of the finished product to be FO that does not lead to 10% fo load. You are correct. It's close, but not the same. But both methods I mentioned are the same FO % (just different amounts total)

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      But honestly..... I would have added confusion for most to the video. It's sort of a side discussion. Lol. But definitely worth it at some point. Thanks Dustin

  • @freed6343
    @freed6343 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    First off- thank you for taking the time to make this video. Candle math is very important to me, a newbie to this hobby/business. One thing you did not discuss was determining how much unmelted wax to start with, by weight, to use when attempting to fill a particular container. I've been taring my container, filling it with water and then multiplying the weight of the water by .86 to give me the weight of wax to melt that will fill that container. It seems to work OK, but my question is will this work with all wax blends (or at least be close) besides just straight soy? I'm just trying to find a method of determining how much wax to use in a container without actually melting the wax to weigh to begin with. Weighing water is definitely easier than weighing melted wax, especially if your batch consists of several differently-sized containers. Thank you in advance for taking the time to answer my question... and for making this video.

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Floyd. I guess I could have mentioned that but I made an assumption. My mistake. You can use the water method if you want... but I just weigh an empty jar, then melt wax and fill the jar once that I plan to use. Then weigh again and net the difference. To me that just makes the most sense snd is the most accurate. Different waxes have different densities so the water method isn't all that accurate for all waxes. So this is my preference plus easy you have to melt wax anyway so just fill your jar one time first. 😀

    I am looking at the idea of making a few candles for personal use. Wade, your channel has excellent technical info!
    FYI, serious soap makers and cosmetic formulators also use weight, not volume. [I do both.] Also, if you can use it, the metric system will make the math easier to deal with. [9% of a kilogram = 1,000 grams x 0.09 = 90 grams. 9% of 2 pounds is ... confusing.]
    For a good visualization of why we use weight instead of volume ... fill a glass with ice cubes. When they melt, you have the same weight of water, but less volume. Or fill a wax pouring pitcher with chunks of wax, then melt them - again, same weight, different volume.

    Hi Wade, I just saw this video today and I have to say your videos are educational and fun. I love them. Now I must admit that I use a different method and here in Aus we use grams. I hope that my method is correct as that is the method I’ve been using since I started over 2.5 years ago. I know my jar holds 280g so I calculate 280 x 9% = 25.2g of oil, I round to 25g. So I subtract 25 from 280 = 255g wax. I hope the way I’ve been doing is also correct and if not please let me know.

      Thsnk you. The formula is the same whether is grams or oz, just a different unit.
      Regarding your specific method. It's fine and most people start that way. The concern (which is the example I gave in the video) KS that your fragrance load isn't actually 9% anymore. It's almost 10% now (9.88).
      By adding it in first snd then subtracting it out, its not accurate. You said your final numbers are 25.2 FO abd 255 wax, right?
      25.2 / 255 = .988 or 9.9% FO load. Which is not what you thought you were getting.
      So you can do it that way if you want, just keep in mind your FO is more than you thought. Whatever melts you use, be consistent.
      But hope this helps show why that method isn't preferred for accuracy

    After watching this video, I realized I have been doing it a mixture of both methods. I was taking 16x .09 =1.44 then taking 16- 1.44=14.56. 🤨 I think I am going to start doing it the way of method 2 even though the difference is only .12. Thanks for the video!

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes. Good catch. The math you were using actually leads to a different fragrance load. Which isn't a huge deal if your consistent with it. But it does lead to a different FO load then you think you are using

      I was just thinking the same myself. Had to come into the comments and make sure cause that’s how I would normally calculate a 9% of something.

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! Well, the simple answer is.... "math". Lol. That's just the formula to get a percentage part of a whole. 1 is the whole. Its easier to just accept that it's just a math formula. Lol. So hard to explain in text. Lol

    I poured my very first candles today. I don't believe I'd have made it without you. You are my 'go to' instructor. I have so many questions, but I know you're busy so I'll just ask one...do I check each candle for sink holes, and how soon into curing? {okay, two questions). I used IGI4630. Thank you.

    • @BlackTieBarn
      @BlackTieBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Don. Np at all! I'd check for the sink holes a couple hours in and then fill in. It will depend on jar size though so just experiment. If your using a wax likely to have sink holes you'd want to do that to each or you'll never know. If using waxes not as susceptible to them, then you're good

      @@BlackTieBarn I had no idea how intricate this process can be...testing, testing, testing. My first candles weren't bad (thanks to you). However, of the many questions I have, the most important one is regarding HT. I used 2.375 dia. mason jars, 4 and 8 oz. I used IGI4630 with 6% fragrance in the 8oz and 9% in the 4oz. I used multiple wick sizes, htp, cd, lx, and heated/poured according to wax manufacturer instructions and cured 48 hrs. What I experienced was a stronger smell of paraffin than fragrance in all testers. I just purchased 464, thinking a blend with the 4630 may reduce the paraffin odor. Would you be so kind as to offer any suggestions? I would greatly appreciate it. Thank you in advance.

    Thank you for the information! It was wonderfully delivered. I am going to ask what may be obvious but here goes. When you fill the container to determine how much it hold it needs to be done with melted wax, correct? And then can it be poured back out and the fragrance added or should that one be tossed. Thank you!
