Something I like is that Vandham is genuinely written as a good dude. For example, he interjects when Pyra starts talking about memories; he realized that Pyra had accidentally dug up something painful in her past wanted to avoid letting her make herself feel even worse. He's just great.
@@TheRezro Is this another one of those "Rezro thinks a series-spanning Easter Egg means this series of similar characters is actually one individual" theories? Because I'm here to put a stop to that before people who don't know much about the series get the wrong idea.
Chugga: hey everybody! It’s- Vandham: hold it kid. This is my story right now, so let a grown up handle this til we truly leave the village. Hey Everybody! It’s Vandam here! And welcome to another part of Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
"you could've just said British" that's the kind of sentence that gets you beat with a stick in any of those countries And it'll be a different kind of stick depending on which region you say it in, just to drive the point home
Same kind of people who would go to Kenya and say "I don't speak african" Just because counties are near each other, and have history together, doesn't mean the cultures are going to be anything alike.
Rex: *Dies from Ardun attack* Tutorial Guy: "Looks like one of you has inflicted Break!" Rex: .... Tutorial Guy: "Why don't you take advantage of Nia's Break effect and Topple that Ardun with your Anchor Shot?" Rex: ....
And that's why you turn off the tutorials at the start. The game doesn't care if you're dying, and you need a med pack,, it'll still play the tutorial on the attack... I'm sorry, is left 4 dead too deep of a cut now?
Vandham is such a good character, He kinda takes the "old mentor" character and runs with it. Better yet, this by no means takes Azurda's place as the "old mentor" where Azurda has more wisdom to share about the world in a historic and "mystical" sense because he's centuries old, Vandham has a more grounded "human" side to his wisdom and has more "battle" wisdom to share with Rex than Azura did. They add layers to it instead of knocking one off of the troupe that has been set for them. On a completely unrelated note, I do NOT remember that sound that Nia makes in that cutscene at 34:23. It seems so...out of place there but it def made me do a double take LOL.
"Listen here, mate. There is only one man who can handle Roc and Ball Torture in this Titan! You're looking at him!" -Vandham during the crotch shot at the level 4 Special
Seeing a monster in resonance with a blade was really cool. How they do it is beyond me and it’s a detail that I really like. The blade you get from beating the arachno is really good too
@@Proteus_Ridley Yes, so so much yes, that stupid rabbit was harder than avalanche abassy for me because it was just so dodgy even with night vision 6 gems on my party
Holy crap, that speech Vandham gave at the end was way beyond anything I expected this game to pull. I'm consoling a friend through a nasty breakup right now and one of the lessons we're trying to learn is that their ex is going through just as much pain as they are, and viewing it as the "good side" and the "bad side" of the relationship is just hurting them more. Even know Vandham's speech was about war, it still resonated real deep here. I'm real excited to see what other moments this game has on offer
Blew me away as well. Its so surprising to see this game go that deep, and tackle this sorta thinking. Breaking open Rex's Naivete was important, as it's a double message for us as well. Since RPGs tend to make the bad guys out as purely bad, even though to them - YOU'RE the bad guy.
3:26, is it just me who keeps expecting to hear “AN ETHER NET” at this quote. Maybe it’s because Vandham and the Ardainian soldiers has similar energy in their voice,
@@n0ame1u1 But those places are quite different culturally, legally, governmentally, linguistically (both in seperate dialects and languages) and geographically. Saying you could have just said British when you're talking about something that differs between them (language in Chuggaa's discussion with his peer) is like saying people from Texas and Massachusetts are just Americans.
I understand the confusion as an australian myself. A lot of the older generations still sound a bit british, its probably the most similar accent to ours besides maybe NZ. Vandham sounds like he's from Queensland for sure.
The Phantom also Spoilers because I don’t wanna accidentally reveal what you said in my reply to this comment. Yep, no reason to doubt what you said, all those flags they’re waving are just Vandham’s victory parade...where’d these onions come from?
If you use Nim's 'Talk to Phonexes' field skill around Garfont you get some good Vandham backstory. He used to be a noble (his given name was Aquila Paronet Sol Esteriole) before becoming a mercenary, and had a son who passed away.
I really agree with Chuggaa when it comes to the characters in this game. I at least liked every single character you would've met by this time at the bare minimum. The character interactions kept me well invested in this game and somewhat pushed me to keep playing.
Not invested, for the most part just amused. The dialogue is kinda cringy at times but most of the voice acting is well done and nobody feels out of place even if they are forgettable.
@@controlcon nah there were a couple times when I felt like I was listening to a B list dubbing of a dragon ball anime, but not as much of an issue since the game doesn't really take itself seriously.
Vandham is my favorite character in the entire game purely because of the way he says MUSCLE. It’s just so satisfying to hear MMMMMMUSCLE SLASH over and over again. I consider the way he says MUSCLE just below the pre patch Ardainian Soldier quotes.
1. The Beastly Core Crystal blade is one of my favorite blades in the entire game in both design, and usability, it’s so cool. 2. I can’t get over how amazing the beginning of the Akhos fight is. The way him and Obrona appear, then the tense music sets in, and then right as Vandham says his last line before the battle starts, Death match with Torna kicks in.
This really is when you see the darker side of things beyond the big bad trying to kill you for pyra, well I say darker side of thing, but its more the tragedy of being a blade, and the tragedy of pyra... would you rather be reborn knowing you had previous lives, but no memory of what you did during those lives? Or immortal and never forget anything that has happened during your entire life?
well, there is a rare, third option that we will learn of later. To beat around the bush to avoid spoiling as much as possible, remember that a "dead" blade returns to its core, waiting to be reawakened. What if that blade was to be preserved instead of lost to time, and what if said blade was aware of its own preservation? I wont say more, but such instances do arise on a rare occasion.
You live and die either way, really. It's just that one of the options skips childhood when they're born, so that must be quite a trip. Also, one is completely dependent on the life of whoever awakened them, in a much different dynamic than parent and child. Based on those facts, I'd argue being human is the better deal. But then again, being a Blade comes with awesome power and a pre-packed purpose in life, so those are also nice benefits. Hard choice.
Oh wait, I missed the point of the question, you were comparing normal Blades to the Aegis. Well I'd argue immortality wouldn't be that bad, but only if you had other immortal people to share it with. Than the longevity would be the norm, rather than an unnecessary burden. Then again, immortality would also kinda suck if you got heavily traumatized early on with no real way of dealing with it.
OH SHIT I WASN'T EXPECTING TO SEE THIS CUTSCENE TODAY. This is one of my personal favorites with one of my favorite songs from the ost. The things discussed here made me question the idea of justice and what is it
It's so rare in games for there to be many Father figures, characters that have big hearts that are a bit rough around the edges. Show you the ropes, correct you where you are wrong and show you the proper way of doing things. Vandham might not be Rex's dad, but he makes for a great Father figure
Nobody: Absolutely nobody: Tutorial guy: Well well well, looks like one of you has been f*cking STABBED, looks like it's a great time for me to explain damage!
I love how Vandahm just flat out makes one of your arts better. Just teaching Rex all these things about being a great Driver made him one of my favorite characters.
Akhos: "OBRONA NOW IS NOT THE TIME TO MESS AROUND!" Obrona: "But-! That wasn't me!" Akhos: "Oh, then I suppose it was some magical voice in the sky?" Rex's Party: -mutual glancing at one another-
XBC2 VA facts: Akhos' VA, Hugo Harold-Harrison also voices Tobias Wilson in the Amazing World of Gumball. And that's it. Akhos' Japanese Va, Nobunaga Shimazaki voices characters such as Akira (Astral Chain) Eugeo (SAO) Yuno (Black Clover) Corrin (Fire Emblem) Handa (Handa-kun) Yuma (Shining Resonance) and so many more.
Oh no. This is the part where we first fight THIS GUY. Three words: "SCREW SHACKLE BLADE." I didn't know about those Shackle Blade Resist gems on my first playthrough and this guy... certainly lived up to sharing his Japanese name with one of the most broken Personas of all time. Since most of your moveset relies on your Blade, Shackle Blade cripples your options massively. Also, Chain Attacks and Orbs. Yet another thing the game doesn't explain to you that well. I never got a single Full Burst until POSTGAME SUPERBOSSES. They're not necessary a lot of the time, it just looks cool to see the gigantic damage numbers you can get off them. Oh, and you know how earlier Chugga said Anchor Shot is one of Rex's best Arts? This is why. It didn't seem too impressive earlier, but now it has Topple. This is a HUGE upgrade to Rex and you'll probably be seeing Anchor Shot a lot from now on. Edit: Pause the video at 2:24 if you've played Xenoblade 1 for PTSD.
I got my first full burst by complete accident when I discovered how (REDACTED) interacted with the orbs during that one annoying area with *those* enemies.
To be honest though, the setup you have is severely lacking in damage potential if you need a full burst to kill anything in this game. 3 element orbs should be more than sufficient to kill even postgame superbosses. A lot of my early superboss grind setups would kill the superboss with 4 / 3 of a round, leaving the rest of the round for getting overkill percentage.
You don't really get a reliable way to resist shackle blade until you don't really need it anymore, by that point party gauge is so easy to build you can just chain attack. I don't remember but I think the most you can get around this point is a 30% chance to resist shackle blade.
"Yeah, its bad. But war's not about what's right or wrong. Power. That's all it is." This is my favorite line from Vandham and the moment he became my favorite character. It has so much weight to it. He knows how shitty the world is and how everything ain't black and white. Ahkos may be a literal villain but that doesn't mean there isn't something driving him. And Vandham knows that while still being able to hate his guts.
27:17 alright I’m taking two wild guesses here and gonna hope one of them is right for this question Rex asked: Pyra’s old driver is either Malos or that Architect fellow mentioned a couple times at the start. I don’t know anything about the game apart from what we’ve seen so far, but I like to theorise.
I find the lore around Blades fascinating, especially what we learned in Torna, The Golden Country. In that game, which takes place in the Aegis War 500 years prior to XC2, we learn that Drivers using the weapons Blades manifest is something created only then, as opposed to when XC2 starts, where it's the norm for Drivers to use a Blade's weapon. So even then, after the evolution of the Blade weapons, there was still things to be learned about Blades and their connection with their Drivers.
@@TheRezro Xenogears isn't in the same continuity as Xenoblade. Just because they have some common themes and one has a few references to the other doesn't mean they're the same.
And the beautiful thing about this advancement in weapons is that it occurred because one specific driver was too poor to get a second sword so she and her blade had to share
Wulfric (the blade from the Beastly core crystal) is one of my favourites, he has cool design and good personality, his specials are brutal, and megalances on Rex have a break art, so you can one man driver combo✨
@@Galemont1992 A LOT of FF character designers worked on this game. Hell, even Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of Kingdom Hearts, designed Malos and the rest of the human members of Torna.
The philosophical writing for Vandham is some of my favorite in any game. Maybe I’m just a sucker for this kind of stuff but it was the first thing that elevated this game from something I really liked, to my absolute favorite game
It's something that was really needed to be said to Rex at that moment. . .and was a point to the themes behind the game as a whole. Essentially its the whole 'choose what path you will personally have the fewest regrets with and own up to it" Vandam was written very well (if cliched, but that's okay, Cliches are not a bad thing) and even if he isn't my favorite character that is perhaps simply because he stands apart from the rest of the cast because so much of his dialogue is more impactful.
Now enters my favorite character in the game, Akhos. I know he’s smug and punchable, but I really like his charisma, how he handles himself, and his character dynamic with Obrona. I can’t get enough of whenever they show up.
To be fair to Pyra, Rex is a salvager and has experience working in the (allegedly) pressurized depths of the Cloud Sea, so his endurance may be better than hers just in general.
@@talangieske7709if i assume you talk about the akhos fight, that unconciousness was brought about via ether withdrawl. Also, its specifically PAIN that they share, not conciousness.
@@kevinr.9733 What? It's the unfortunate truth. The fact that Vandham refuses to bond with other blades SEVERELY hinders him. I love his character, but he just becomes unusable after this chapter. Oh yes, he plunges THAT fast.
After many tries, i finally got the perfect run in Tiger Tiger! A perfect no kill run, resulting in 188,460 points... I was so proud that i even took a picture on my phone!
23:51 Kora: "I'm not ready to go back to my core crystal, so... yeah!" Best part is that she said it right before they explained what happens to Blades when their Drivers are killed.
i really love when australia gets some representation. it's really nice to hear a voice and think "oh, i sound like that!". it might sound a little childish but in a world of american dominated pop culture, it's nice to have those times where i can hear myself in the things i watch and play, if that makes any sense
Glad to know that for every time Tora didn't finish a driver combo in my original playthrough was all down to a dice roll, thank you Chugga, very cool!
Unlike Torigoth and most of Argentum, a few of Garfont Village’s caches and areas are blocked off by Field Skills instead of pure platforming, so from hereon I’ll clue you in on a few of field skill check locations and their requirements as well as due to the gachapon nature of Blade pulls, not everything is going to be accessible to everyone at the exact same time. I’ll be doing this too if Emile’s pathing takes him near or across a potential cache where he doesn’t have the field skills necessary to access it due to the random nature of Blade pulls or he doesn’t check it because he wants to keep on moving. Of course, he could always come back to these checks at a later time (and in some cases will for the sake of a quest), but if there’s loot to be had, you may as well get it sooner rather than later, right? Let me know if I’m being too detailed with trove contents. After hyping up those two chests Emile missed back at the Lower Level and finding out that they’re not as good as I recalled, I figured that I ought to be paying more attention to and jotting down what’s inside rather than relying on weeks old memory. With that, Things Emile Missed: -Between two tents to your right when you enter through the Garfont Town Gate (sandwiched between the road and the Training Grounds) is a treasure trove that requires Superstrength Lv 1 and Nopon Wisdom Lv 2 to break open. If you’ve been following Emile’s LP, Poppi alone should be skilled enough to spill the gold, Jamming III aux core, and Common Core Crystal inside. -To the right of where you meet up with Vandham before he joins the party (towards the Training Grounds) is a pool of water that you can dive into if you have Water Mastery Lv 2 and Fortitude Lv 2. Crossette should have the latter if you’re following the LP step by step where possible, but the former might not come as easily depending. This takes you to the Shrine of Light which has a treasure trove with a Rare Core Crystal, Swift Evasion III aux core, and some gold. -Going past Raloo (the Urayan girl Emile was making fun of in regards to her working relationship with Vandham) and towards the rock wall, turn right into a narrow dead end with an Airflow. Triggering this should be no problem with Roc and your starting Wind Knuckle Claw Blade in your party as it’s a Wind Mastery Lv 2 and Leaping Lv 1 check. The real barrier is going to be the treasure trove up ahead at the Shrine of Offering as it’s locked until you have Superstrength Lv 3 and Ancient Wisdom Lv 2. Dromarch has the Ancient Wisdom, but Superstrength Lv 3 might elude you for now unless you have the right Rare Blade(s). The reward isn’t as worthwhile either compared to the other two caches unfortunately: a Common Core Crystal, Ether Defense II aux core, and less gold than the other troves mentioned. Vandham’s not the only experienced fighter of the Mercenaries. NPCs in this area tend to be rather knowledgeable as we saw here and there last time. Go chat them up since there aren’t too many of them and the area’s pretty small. You might get a refresher on the Driver combo chain, learn more about Blade Combos, and maybe even learn something more about Vandham and Roc like their favorite pouch items. 0:07 His design does make you wonder about what he keeps in all those pouches. If you still had your one Pouch Expansion Kit, you could’ve given it to Vandham instead. 1:47 And for now, Roc’s staying at Level 1. His Chart’s unlock requirements are currently impossible to complete as they require a locked mechanic. However once that mechanic’s unlocked, unlocking his Key Affinity nodes is quite literally only a matter of time, so we’ll get to see him work his stuff soon. Roc likes to try to finish fights quickly. Any longer than those first 30 seconds and he loses a lot of his potency compared to Pyra at that point. At least Vandham has the strength stat to alleviate fights that last for longer while also making more fights last under those 30 seconds too. 2:25 Sandstorm is also the opposite of Electric. Just as Fire is strong against Water in this game and vice versa, so too are Electric and Earth paired up in that way. 3:38 We’ve actually seen one of these before, back on Gormott at the Bolderbore Gate. That one looks a bit more menacing than this one. For story reasons however, you cannot disperse that one in particular at this point in the game. Soon though. BTW, Roc can only disperse Ether Miasmas like the one in the cutscene. There’s another kind of Miasma called Dark Miasmas that will block the way all the same (explorative types may have seen one on Gormott), but they generally require some levels of Dark Mastery and Ancient Wisdom to disperse. Nothing Roc can do about them. By the way, the blossom rain stopped at 7 AM. Some weather effects are time sensitive and only last for certain hours. Blossom rain for instance is a night only weather condition. 5:08 Their ears are also often pointed and have scales/crusty skin on them. The suits of armor they wear (like the ones we saw back in Episode 1 when both Ardanian and Urayan troops were shown) are also crustacean-like in appearance. Always thought it was Cockney and not strictly Australian. From BigKlingy’s comment a couple vids ago, I stand firm by that thought. Talk about uncultured. There’s also plenty of American accents as we’ve seen in the game too. I wonder if anyone’s noticed any patterns yet... 7:10 Launched enemies however take more damage than toppled foes. It’s a shame that it’s so hard to maintain the Launch status, but at least you can get some better hits in, and even if the status ends without you Smashing them, they do need time to pick themselves back up regardless and can’t fight back in that time whereas from a Topple, they tend to get back up immediately. Anyone who’s played Skyrim and any other games where you can throw your enemies around like ragdolls know how valuable those moments can be. 8:10 He is such a strong mentor figure for Rex. While Gramps certainly taught a lot for Rex, he also can’t necessarily lend a guiding hand either in his full adult form or in his larval state. Vandham however as we’ll see is also quite experienced in the ways of the world and can actually fight alongside Rex and show him the ropes better than Gramps can. He’s not a replacement for Gramps but a supplement, a very good one at that. Their post party banter reflects that too. Rex isn’t in the party currently (and as such I have to wonder if Emile will ever have both Rex and Vandham active at the same time since you don’t really need two Attackers. Then again, he did use Jin at the beginning), but some of his dialogue shows why Vandham thinks so much of Rex and is particularly fond of him. He also has some choice compliments for Tora and Poppi. 9:38 What was that about not getting a Level 3 combo? Also Kora’s electric heart that she makes on impact is just her all over. 10:40 And there it is. Plus I think we actually need Rex in the party coming up anyways. 12:15 Thought you were going to use that to take a jab at the tutorial person. Anyhow, Anchor Shot being able to Topple is a mechanic that just unlocked and something we’ll be seeing a lot of. 13:03 Nia doesn’t prioritize elemental weaknesses. The AIs rarely do. The best way to get Dromarch out reliably is for Pyra to use a Special which will prompt Nia to switch in order to continue the Blade Combo. 14:35 Since it all went by so quickly, Fusion Combos do one or both of the following depending on the stage of the Combo you’re in: extend/reset the duration of one of the Combos (indicated by the clock. In this case Steam Bomb since Topple was just inflicted) or increase the Party Gauge by a lot (indicated by the bar with an up arrow). In this case we got both. 17:08 Some of these places could have hidden treasure. Other times they may be a H2H location. 18:30 We heard this before albeit with Nia and her Blade Combos and healer priority, but now we get to see what makes the guys tick. 20:17 Huh, was not aware of that with Tora. No wonder it seemed like he was hit or miss with following up with Big Boost before Rex was able to Topple with Pyra, even if Big Boost was ready for use. 23:53 Haven’t heard that one before from Kora, that’s pretty funny. 25:22 Almost like she’s speaking from experience. 27:22 Wouldn’t be able to use her if they were, so that’s a hard nope. 29:10 I’m...surprised Emile decided to say this so soon. We haven’t seen a Blade die up to this point so Blades being able to die and not just lose their memory is a new concept at this point in the game. 30:33 Oh, we’re going straight into this! Thought Emile would’ve done the two side quests first. 32:30 Rex is taking Pyra’s sudden mortality pretty well. 35:23 Time for a Death March with Torna! Fight! You had your chance! You were the one who triggered this cutscene! Any time during your Blade lecture and returning to Garfont you could’ve done it! That’s on you, pal! Ah, now this is where the combat gets even better. Only got one more mechanic to unlock but as far as combat is concerned, we have all our tools save for that third Blade slot! Also those orbs will now start making more sense. 36:15 They do mean unhelpful. Elemental orbs up to this point have only served to work against you. Each time you pull a Blade Combo Finisher and the enemy lived, they get an orb of the same color/element as the finisher’s. Long as those orbs remain, they take reduced damage from elements matching those of the orbs in addition to whatever resistances they may have based on their stats and current element. In case you’re wondering why subsequent Steam Explosions aren’t dealing as much damage against Mórag for instance, that’s why. Akhos must be so confused right now. Where did all this power suddenly come from? Continued in comments.
37:52 Or rather Obrona is an Electric Element Blade and he’s taken on Obrona’s element, just as Mórag took on Brighid’s and Vandham took on Roc’s. And this is why Shackle is the WORST status effect to get in the game. Well, there’s one that’s arguably worse still, but it doesn’t come up save for a few attacks to really be that bad, and you can anticipate those. Shackle Blade happens so suddenly, and if you’re shackled, you’re absolutely helpless. 38:30 You get another round even if you miss the timing but are stuck at Level 1 specials. If you fail to break an orb (or you perform a chain attack on an enemy without an orb), your chain attack ends immediately after that round. Your specials will increase in levels up to 3 at which point if you keep breaking orbs and can continue your rounds it will stay at Level 3. If you pull off a Full Burst (which won’t be for a while as that requires at least four or five orbs broken. It’s possible to break more, but they all break on a Full burst anyways), you will perform a Level 4 special with the current Driver’s Blade while your allies all perform Level 3s with their current Blades all at a much increased damage ratio, usually above 1000% (10 times the damage than normal). Vandham couldn’t continue the Chain Attack here because Roc had attacked AFTER the Water orb was broken. If Emile had gotten a Fire orb on Akhos or if he had broken the orb with Roc by using Azami instead of Pyra at the start, then Vandham could’ve gotten in one more attack before the Chain Attack ended (another round would only start if there was a Fire orb with Rex using Pyra and Nia using Dromarch). Overkill bonus is typically increased faster by using specials that deal multiple hits rather than one powerful one like Dromarch did. The bonus is the best way to grind EXP in battle. You also gain increased SP and WP for the bonus too and a better chance for rarer drops, so keep that party gauge handy! This isn’t the best display about how much thought is required for a Chain Attack. That one orb was guaranteed to break no matter who was used. If there was a Fire orb in addition to the Water orb though, that alone adds a layer of complexity. You see, if a Blade that isn’t effective against any of the orbs attacks, they attack one of the orbs at random. If you attack with a Blade that is strong against a particular orb, they will always target it without fail. So in the case that Akhos had both a Fire and Water orb, all Rex and Nia would have to do to guarantee another round would be to use Pyra and Dromarch respectively, and Roc would have broken one of the orbs. Then, Rex would break the second orb which would allow the party a third round of attacks up to Vandham who wouldn’t be able to fight with Roc a third time (even if Rex fails the button prompt, the orb break guarantees a third round). That’s because the second orb break would revitalize Roc for a second attack. However, let’s say Rex had attacked with Azami first instead of Pyra. Maybe she’d hit the Fire orb. Maybe she’d hit the Water orb. Who knows? But if she hits the Water orb, that’s a big problem for the Chain Attack. Nia has no way of guaranteeing that the Water orb will be what she hits with Kora, and she absolutely will not hit it with Dromarch. Regardless of which way it goes, Roc would have a 50/50 chance of continuing an orb burst. If Roc fails to break an orb, the chain attack ends there. It pays to play smart, but on the other hand, if luck wins out and they only break the one orb that round without damaging the other, that means that in the third round Roc would get to do his Level 3 special before the attack ends then and there for an even bigger overkill bonus. Sometimes playing risky works too. How lucky are you feeling? To cap off this long explanation on Chain Attacks and how complicated they can get, remember that one Common Blade that had Orb Master on it? That skill is exclusive to Common Blades and is the key to racking up damage fast. At a set percentage based on their skill level (60%-100%), any level of their specials can imbue an orb on the enemy. You don’t need to use that Blade’s element as a finisher anymore. With the right party comp you can stack on orbs quickly and with some smart/lucky playing, you can do a powerful chain attack even with mostly Common Blades. Don’t underestimate these guys just because they look rather generic. 39:50 Oh Akhos, you could’ve ruined your script if you’d actually been successful here. I’m not sure I 100% agree with Vandham’s assessment at the end there about right and wrong, but maybe that’s because we’re all too far steeped into our own personal wars to be so objective as to not see right and wrong in these conflicts. The left side thinks they’re doing the right thing. The right side thinks that they’re doing the right thing. The protesters think they’re doing the right thing. The enforcers think they’re doing the right thing. Everyone thinks that they’re in the right, that they’re fighting for and to protect what’s right, and they’re using their own power, trying to gain more power to show that they’re in the right and better protect what we’re fighting for. As often as it’s used as a negative saying, might can in fact make right. Who’s right and who’s wrong is often determined by the victor, and nothing is so set in stone. It all can get awfully muddy and gray trying to figure out what’s right and wrong for oneself. But I do agree that standing by, letting that personal power go to waste, is not the way to go. If you don’t use that power, defeat is all but assured. So remember this in the upcoming month.
Vandham: "You're doing a great job, kid!" Rex: "Thanks Vandad!" Vandham: "What?" Rex: "What?" Gramps: "I'm disgusted, I'm revolted. I dedicate my entire life to raising this kid, and this is the thanks I get?"
Emile, come on. Vandham is a collector. If he used any of his Pouch Expansion Kits, they wouldn't be in mint condition anymore. How could you expect him to not show off his collection everywhere he goes?
Kinda amazing how Kora refers to Blades returning to their core crystals if their Driver dies just before the cut-scene where the game explores that very concept.
I love how Emile tells little stories in his editing. Like around 28:09 , where he somehow made the blade leveling up screen feel slightly off, by showing it right after the blade exposition. It might just be me, but it suddenly felt a bit creepy, especially since he stopped talking during it.
I thought that Blades and Drivers bared a similarity to Stands in Jojo but when you take into account Rex and Pyra’s scenario it become more apparent than ever with the whole shared damage thing.
My first playthrough I didn't have Anchor Shot equipped during the fight with the Ardun, and Vandham had replaced Tora during the cutscene, so I literally couldn't Topple it. Vandham still congratulates you for learning to topple so quickly!
I forgot how great of a character Vandham is! He's like a father figure to Rex, and it's so heartwarming to watch! Rex's interactions with Pyra are also super heartwarming cuz they have so much chemistry with each other!
its so annoying my little bro actually got THAT blade on his 3rd chapter with a common (with boosters but don't really matter) i was so triggered cause by Uraya all i had was Azami dagas and Floren
I always felt the philosophy of the Joker was the capstone to this scene at the end there. The difference between the hero and a villain, is one bad day.
Was the dead titan the same one Rex & Friends were sailing on to Elysium? In episode 18 at the 4 minute mark, we see what looks like the cabin of their boat, but not the titan. The titan in this episode at 20:54 looks to be adapted to live in the cloud sea and it shares some of the features of the boat titan, especially when you go back to episode 17 at the 28 minute mark. So is the game implying that these are the same titan?
@@hermannator1 alternatively: a "smoothie" because that also sounds hilarious actually like anything I can come up with has another meaning as a word already that just has nothing in common with what you'd be implying lol
Vandham is really awesome. He is such a good mentor character. He knows when to do and say anything, and he also isn't going to try to make something look better than it is.
It IS a pretty weird disconnect, having battles where you completely destroy your enemy, only for the cutscenes to start and find out you lost. I think this was handled a lot better in XC1. The party doesn't straight-up lose that often, but when they do, the fight they lost in genuinely feels like a battle you aren't meant to win, and they usually cut the battle short in those cases anyway.
TheRezro I don't necessarily think so. I think forced defeat is a better way to end a battle you aren't meant to win. Better than winning the battle only for the cutscenes to pull a reverse card on you, anyway. It just feels smoother from a story perspective, at least to me. It might just be a matter of preference though.
Not really. It's just that he understands how the game works and played through it several times now, making the fight easy as hell. Any first time play through you _will_ struggle on varying fronts though, the cutscene reflecting that struggle and initial difficulty you had trying to beat a boss. I'd like to think of it as a second or third phase you can't do anything about. You gotta take the L
A point against Sword Bash is that being behind an enemy may sometimes prompt them to use unique arts that can only hit behind them. Nia's AI will not take it into account and usually tries to be behind the enemy, which means she usually gets hit by these arts, even if she doesn't have the aggro. Some of these arts can be really painful, and being on the side of an enemy won't trigger unique arts, making it a more survivable position.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fun fact of the day number 20: Concept art for Akhos, the boss at the end of the video, showed him having a much more wide array of expressions. He had very scared looking yelling art, art with his face showing a smile and a halo above him, and art that seems to show him in pain. A lot of these faces went unused, in the game proper he only really shows a few expressions, and they are much less expressive overall.
@@YOM2_UB which I think basically only come up this chapter. He appears later on (might be a spoiler but it would be weird to just drop him) but I don't think he ever really uses the play metaphors again.
Today we spend more time with Vandham. The wise man, the warrior...the teacher. His burly physique, though necessary, betrays his heart. Perhaps he sees a bit of himself in Rex to take him under his and Roc’s wings so quickly, or perhaps this is just who Vandham truly is when not fighting.
I hope one day someone gets every single lp and syncs every episode up with the "hey everybody its chuggaaconroy" and then after they do every lp they combine all of them into one video like that one Scott the woz one
I love something odd in that last scene. Vandham asks Rex a question, and instead of letting Vandham say what e was gonna say, he gave him an answer, cuz he didnt understand what Vandham was trying to do.Thats something a kid would do and i love what that says about rex
I have to say Emile, I am very surprised at how little you’ve talked about the battle music in this game. No mention of Incoming, the unique theme(s) and even just this episode Death Match with Torna, hell not even a mention of Counterattack. Well in due time you’ll talk about how incredible these tracks are and I await that moment, have definitely made me remember how good some of the titan themes are and even made me realize how good the ancient ship’s music is.
So I kinda just noticed something about Rex's voice. The lower parts of his voice, like when he was thinking about pyra already having a body, sound really nice. If there ever was a sequel to this story with Rex I feel like an older version of him would have a really nice voice
This is my first time seeing the story and lore of this game and... just wow. Blades are such an interesting concept and the game (at least so far) has used it in incredibly interesting ways. I love how (in lore) it doesn't matter how powerful a Blade is, but is instead about the skill and bond with their Driver. They are both weapons and comrades, and that is shown through the gameplay and story beautifully.
Yeah, it definitely gets better and more developed the further the game goes. We haven't gotten to a point where the game really hits the 'comrade' part home yet, but we will. This game really goes out of its way to just showcase blades as a different type of Person and no being no different from their drivers other than the fact they are bound to their core crystal.
@@hallaloth3112 Oh hell yeah! My favorite part of Blades is the living weapon dynamic between them and their Drivers. The scenes where the Drivers and Blades are throwing the weapon to each other have been really cool. It's like they're a single entity

My personal theory on why Vandham only has Roc as a blade is because we don’t have any spider or koala blades out there, he’s a true Aussie.
Shouldn’t he have Finch then? Go for the killer bird combo.
why do I feel like he's about to sweep a group of 6 Territorial Rothbarts using only Muscle Slash

You mean Aquila?
Pyra the legendary Aegis, most powerful blade in all of Alrest.
Vandham "Cheers luv give me a beer"
He does us Australians proud.
Something I like is that Vandham is genuinely written as a good dude.
For example, he interjects when Pyra starts talking about memories; he realized that Pyra had accidentally dug up something painful in her past wanted to avoid letting her make herself feel even worse.
He's just great.
What is weird because he actually was a villain in other games.

@The Phantom DMWT is my favorite song in the game, so I'm definitely happy to hear it.
@@cullenlatham2366 oh I've beat the game, I too am trying not to say too much...
@@cullenlatham2366 For reminder Aegis isn't regular blade. Those laws don't apply to her.

I didn't know about those Shackle Blade Resist gems on my first playthrough and this guy... certainly lived up to sharing his Japanese name with one of the most broken Personas of all time.
I get vietnam flashbacks playing Bringer of Chaos at the end of Chapter 3. Thanks, Akhos.
I agree with Maxechil's Empty Space
, you really don't need Full Burst and likely won't see it in an optimal fight. It just looks really cool.
Vandham teaching Rex how to topple an enemy with Anchor Shot is something I absolutely love.
"Yeah, its bad. But war's not about what's right or wrong. Power. That's all it is."
This is my favorite line from Vandham and the moment he became my favorite character. It has so much weight to it. He knows how shitty the world is and how everything ain't black and white. Ahkos may be a literal villain but that doesn't mean there isn't something driving him. And Vandham knows that while still being able to hate his guts.

I can say you now that definitely neither of them, especially not Malos.

Fun fact: First blade in this franchise is Emeralda Kasim.
This point is further developed when we find out a certain interesting detail about how Urayan drivers fight.

With that, Things Emile Missed:
-Between two tents to your right when you enter through the Garfont Town Gate (sandwiched between the road and the Training Grounds) is a treasure trove that requires Superstrength Lv 1 and Nopon Wisdom Lv 2 to break open.
Imagine is the song was called "Death Match with Tora!"
Eric Parazak Eventually! Tora is potentially the most powerful Driver in the game.
I NEVER got that pattern until you said something, and now that i know it, the game has changed immensely for me
Aer Head Pattern?
Vandham: "You're doing a great job, kid!"
Rex: "Thanks Vandad!"
Vandham: "What?"
Rex: "What?"
Gramps: "I'm disgusted, I'm revolted. I dedicate my entire life to raising this kid, and this is the thanks I get?"
Emile, come on. Vandham is a collector. If he used any of his Pouch Expansion Kits, they wouldn't be in mint condition anymore. How could you expect him to not show off his collection everywhere he goes?
He's got all those expired military ration kits that people on TH-cam like to buy and attempt to taste
The period immediately after Vandham joins is easily my favorite part of the game. He's the dad we all need in our lives
28:10 This is kinda like Soul Eater but they have fewer restrictions for who they can pair with.
My first playthrough I didn't have Anchor Shot equipped during the fight with the Ardun, and Vandham had replaced Tora during the cutscene, so I literally couldn't Topple it. Vandham still congratulates you for learning to topple so quickly!
Seeing Rainbow Slugs demoted to a common drop after all the suffering they caused me in XC1 is an intriguing sting.
No one:
Not a single soul:
Not even Rex:
Vandham: f u r r y p o n
The uraya theme is the absolute best in the game, I could listen to it on repeat
I forgot how great of a character Vandham is! He's like a father figure to Rex, and it's so heartwarming to watch! Rex's interactions with Pyra are also super heartwarming cuz they have so much chemistry with each other!
43:46 I appreciate you calling out that cute meow, that just broke the tension a little in that cutscene xD
YOOO GUYS! I just pulled the rarest blade in the game after grinding for it for so long! Ya know, THAT blade.
Congrats! How long has it taken you to obtain them?
Any way how to get Newt?

The difference between the hero and a villain, is one bad day.
It is more complicated, but yes. Ones hero is another's villain, but that doesn't men that values don't exist.
It’s weird how arts are mentioned fairly often in XC2, when in the first game they were just moves you could do.
Pretty sure Reyn tells Shulk to use his arts to "finish it off" in the cutscene right before we take control of Shulk for the first time.
Their only ever mention arts in the first game once
Was the dead titan the same one Rex & Friends were sailing on to Elysium?
In episode 18 at the 4 minute mark, we see what looks like the cabin of their boat, but not the titan.
The titan in this episode at 20:54 looks to be adapted to live in the cloud sea and it shares some of the features of the boat titan, especially when you go back to episode 17 at the 28 minute mark.
So is the game implying that these are the same titan?
"Sussed me out, furrypon!"
...the assessment of Noppon being furries isn't necessarily wrong but it should be
What, Nopon have fur. Nothin' wrong with that!
If they are furries themselves are they still furries by human sense? It's like humanpon...? I don't know.
Well that nopon has a thing for humanoid maids so he would be a "skinny" as apposed to a furry

@@wolfdude1623 I thought they had feathers?
Vandham is really awesome. He is such a good mentor character. He knows when to do and say anything, and he also isn't going to try to make something look better than it is.
Gotta have even more fights where the characters win in game and lose in the cutscene, are we at 5 or 6 now?
Preventing Mary Sueism is a good thing.
@@wolfdude1623 True, but other option (forced defeats) is worst.
I believe Vandham now has become the Dad of the group, which is pretty dang rad

"OW"
Just in case anyone missed it
A point against Sword Bash is that being behind an enemy may sometimes prompt them to use unique arts that can only hit behind them. Nia's AI will not take it into account and usually tries to be behind the enemy, which means she usually gets hit by these arts, even if she doesn't have the aggro.
Some of these arts can be really painful, and being on the side of an enemy won't trigger unique arts, making it a more survivable position.
Xenoblade Chronicles 2 fun fact of the day number 20:
Concept art for Akhos, the boss at the end of the video, showed him having a much more wide array of expressions. He had very scared looking yelling art, art with his face showing a smile and a halo above him, and art that seems to show him in pain. A lot of these faces went unused, in the game proper he only really shows a few expressions, and they are much less expressive overall.
Same goes for the other Torna memebers who haven't been introduced yet. They just didn't get enough screentime to display that much emotions.
That makes sense considering his playwrite figures of speech.
@@YOM2_UB which I think basically only come up this chapter. He appears later on (might be a spoiler but it would be weird to just drop him) but I don't think he ever really uses the play metaphors again.
I think it might have been because the game was rushed... it's still a great experience but you can see where they cut corners sometimes
The puns in the video titles are one thing we can always count on from chugga lps
Right? His Voice acting isn't terrible, just. . .don't try screaming.
Future redeemed. . .
The Blade lore gets deeper as the game continues. We're only in Chapter 3 out of 10, so there's still quite a bit left t uncover as you'll see.
@@cartooncritic7045 I'm incredibly excited
Yeah, it definitely gets better and more developed the further the game goes. We haven't gotten to a point where the game really hits the 'comrade' part home yet, but we will. This game really goes out of its way to just showcase blades as a different type of Person and no being no different from their drivers other than the fact they are bound to their core crystal.
@@hallaloth3112 Oh hell yeah! My favorite part of Blades is the living weapon dynamic between them and their Drivers. The scenes where the Drivers and Blades are throwing the weapon to each other have been really cool. It's like they're a single entity
