    With the 8 volt on my 55 300 it actually would spin the engine instead of grind and would start immediately. I didn't even have to recalibrate the regulator and didn't hurt lights or radio.

    Just bought a 50 Packard Deluxe 8 for a home for the Lq4/80e that I have. Thank you for this video and answering the 6v to 12v questions that I had!

    I know you’re using an alternator but for those keeping the generator when you convert don’t forget to polarize it to the new 12 v regulator. There’s tons of videos on that. Cheers

    Great video man thank you. I really like my car 6v, but the 6v system is keeping me from doing alot of upgrades that I want to do. I have a Positive ground '54 Plymouth.

    Hey yo! Could you have used 1 12 to 6 volt regulator for all your gauges? How warm are those resistors going get? The vids are great. Keep on it.

    Don’t forget, the wiring in a 6V is much heavier than in 12V. Don’t bother changing the starter. It will crank nice and fast while drawing 1/2 the current it was designed for. Light bulbs must be changed. There was a product called Volta-drop for any devices that still require 6V.
    You can put on a 12v generator from some other car, but it’s much better to make a bracket and use an alternator.
    The best thing is you vehicle will be electrically up to date(think sound system) and the car will start MUCH better. I’ve done the upgrade with a 6V coil but 12V coils are easy to get.

      Wouldn't the starter draw more current when supplied with higher voltage?

    • @curleydogwg
      @curleydogwg ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Tankwiper it’s simple ohms law. Voltage equals current(amps) times resistance. If you double the voltage and the load or resistance stays the same, the current drops to half.
      When you look at your 6V car, you will notice that most of the wires are large because they need to carry more current

    • @jamesbosworth4191
      @jamesbosworth4191 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it will not draw only 1/2 the current it was designed for, probably more like 2/3. It is wound differently than a 12 volt starter.

    Love your video
    But why can't i change just the battery and 12 volt alternator, then a voltage reducer for everything else?

  • @johnellis2347
    @johnellis2347 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Don't do it if it's 6 volt POS ground. Nothing will work 12 volt POS. All current sound equip is neg grnd. None of your gauges will work. Heater motor proplem too. Just go to 8v everything works. Go to hvy bat cables and check body grounds.

      That's what I keep saying - just use an 8 volt battery. Only need to re-calibrate the regulator. Way WAY easier.

    When I did the conversion on my Packard I didn't put any resistors on everything transferred over just fine I used 12 volt light bulbs on everything and the gauges work just fine

    • @HighPSItv

      Are you still using the original gauge resistor pack? Mine was bad

  • @michaelbenardo5695
    @michaelbenardo5695 ปีที่แล้ว

    There is no need to convert to 12 volts. If you are using 1 gauge battery cables, including that cable to the starter, and a group 2 or larger battery, and you still want more power, just use an 8 volt battery. They are available in the same group sizes as 6 volt batteries. All you will have to do is re-calibrate the regulator. So much easier.

    Ok, coils were still 6 volts after cars converted to 12 volt systems. That is why cars came with ballast resistors or ballast wires. I don't know why you'd need to change coils except the avoid wiring in the ballasts.
    I have a question about the starter. I have heard a 6 volt starter will work on 12 volts for , say 20 seconds, before it starts to melt down. Much like you can't crank a 12 volt car longer than that before you damage the starter. Did you change starters? How did you handle the starter wanting to turn the engine backwards when you switched from positive ground to negative ground? I've heard you can crank a volt car much longer. Enough to use the starter to pull a car off the road in an emergency. And advantage of an all 6 volt system.

    • @jamesbosworth4191
      @jamesbosworth4191 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is the old-style batteries. 6 volt batteries are still made the same way they always have been, but most 12 volt batteries were changed during the 80s, except for deep-cycle marine batteries.

    Hey! I've been following your Packard build for a while now, just subscribed too because i realize i wasn't before hand.
    I have a 53 Patrician i am going to rebuild and do a 6 to 12 volt conversion!(only doing because i will be doing EFI) If you wouldn't mind i would like to ask a lot of questions as to how you have wired your car. I would be very intrigued to look at a diagram(if you drew one) of how you have the cluster wired up! I greatly await the next video on your Packard.
    Also(although somewhat unrelated), most of the electric on my car still works and whatnot, even the original voltage regulator.
    Out of curiosity is your car also a Patrician or is it a 300? Either way i love that color!
    From one enthusiast to another, keep up the good work!

    Wanting to convert my 1927 dodge to 12volt it's got a shaft drive generator that's the only thing I'm dreading it removing that to have it converted. Other than that it has a total of like 6 light bulbs and all manual gauges

    • @michaelbenardo5695
      @michaelbenardo5695 ปีที่แล้ว

      It should already be 12 volts. Pre Chrysler Dodges were 12 volts stock.
