    In response to some of the old comments... Man, analogue synths were SOO difficult to keep in tune back then! Temperature, humidity, mains voltage sag... Shit, if you even looked at those things in the wrong way they'd throw themselves out of tune just because they felt like it! The fact that the mighty Herb dared to use this experimental stuff in a live performance situation is commendable in itself. I challenge ANY of you to keep an authentic old-skool original retro analogue synth completely in-tune throughout an entire live performance and upload the footage! :-p

      Yes. Once you started/ you were "stuck" with the results. There are older TH-cam videos of Chick Corea starting/stopping synth solos because the tuning had drifted since soundcheck !!!###

    Make sure you listen to whole thing! The first chorus is way out of tune, and then after the keyboard solo Herbie just DESTROYS the vocoder part on the out-chorus. Instead of playing it like the record, he just GOES for it. Killing.

      Oh stop being an idiot; the vocoder is perhaps the most distinct as it produces a sound with no human vox; the other two do and modulate human vocals to an externally-dictated pattern; either live or pre-determined.

    The guitar was a little out of tune the vocorder "singing" sounded fine. What an innovator! He even invented the headset vocorder hooked to his glasses. The Moog has a pitch wheel that can affect exact tuning glissing like a slide on a guitar. I thought he used it well. I love this song.

  • @VoiceEncoder
    @VoiceEncoder 14 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    @IMPOPPAG When talking about the vocoder I do mean that the switch for the VCO is off since he's using a synth for the carrier-input. However when speaking of the synth OFF means "out-of-tune" or "off-pitch", NOT turning a switch "on" or "off". It's two different types of "OFF". Therefore you missed the point.

  • @VoiceEncoder

    @dimitrisdimopoulosan Correct!! It's the synth NOT the vocoder that is "out-of-tune". The synth has the keyboard which can go "out-of-tune". The vocoder has NO keyboard in which to go "out-of-tune". Although this vocoder does have its own internal-oscillator (VCO)...so technically maybe it can go..."out-of-tune". But I'm guessing the synth is at fault here.

      Quite true.....all of the early synth artists had issues in the 70s due to the primitive technology compared to today's electronic instruments of the digital era. Keith Emerson, Chick Corea and many others had to pay dues and have stuff not work or play in tune often on the road.....these cats were the pioneers and they had to deal with stuff the average musician/keyboard player will never even know about.
