    Kurt saying his lyrics meant nothing was just his frustration with critics trying to psychoanalyze them. If you read his journals the lyrics to his songs went through multiple revisions. Including this one which was only played live once, in 1993 and the lyrics then were completely different.

      Yeah they all say that. Beatles said that, but obviously the lyrics do mean something. These artist put their soul into their work. They ain't just going to write down the phone book.

    • @ct5625
      @ct5625 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I've only seen a couple of interviews where he suggests that his writing didn't mean as much as it did, but I think it's general consensus that he was just being self-deprecating and modest about his abilities. That was his character, he didn't like all the attention and was pretty shy. The problem is, of course, that we know he did think about his lyrics, a lot. He had a lyric book he and Courtney would write in whenever either of them thought of something (needless to say it was probably mostly his, there's even a suggestion he did that to placate her and give her songs he didn't want just to keep her out of his real material), and many of Nirvana's songs went through different iterations before being recorded. He even conceptualized the videos, which isn't something an artist would do if they didn't have intent and meaning to their art.

      The live performance is so much better lyrically. Not to mention the power live, having never been heard before by the audience, and of course the context.

    "Let's talk about someone else" gives me shivers every time. It's the defense mechanism of someone who took a look inside and doesn't like what he sees. He's used to hiding, prefers to stay where it's safe. His attempts to be honest with himself are punctuated with pointing the finger at "her." Blaming someone else is easier than admitting fault.

    When someone suddenly seems ok that tends to means they have either already resigned themselves to the deed and are at peace with the idea or they have just gotten overwhelmed and have withdrawn which makes everything a procedure and they really aren't at the helm (so to speak) anymore.
    "Himself" or "Herself" is also a term when referring to someone with a massive ego.

    Imposter Syndrome was a big thing for Kurt. Even though he was the force behind the biggest band in the world, he felt that he didn't deserve it, that he would be found out, that he was faking everything and so everything was meaningless.

    Personally I believe the theory that Kurt was going to divorce Courtney and that this was his goodbye to her but she had him killed so that she could get his money and all (which she did). Watch “Soaked in Bleach” and look up the El Duce interview, he passed a polygraph test🤷🏽‍♂️

    With the whole "Ive never failed to fail!" its talking about how a depressed person can morph any positive situation into a negative and thats typically what we do... you see you can do an action thats positive for the world but you will always divide positive actions by 1000 and multiply any negative aspect of that aspect by 1000. Like yes, I went out and helped people in a shelter, but I wasnt able to help the whole world cause i wasnt good enough. See what happened there, you cant save the whole world, but that little negative aspect outshadows any positive and then depression can get a greater influence on your life

    I highly recommend you listen to the first live performance of this in 1993 at the Aragon Ballroom. It is so much more lyrically, sonically and just far more powerful. Knowing it was being heard for the first and only time live makes it even more amazing...During the chorus he is just screaming "Hey" not "Pain" that was altered for the video long after his death. Hole absolutely disgraced this song and Kurt during their unplugged. This was the last song Nirvana ever recorded in a studio, the same one Dave would record the first Foo Fighters album. Haunting.

  • @randomhockeyguy9149

    I've always felt this was a very eerie (but good) last song. Knowing how Kurt died, I listen to this song and think maybe this was his statement on how he was feeling and his struggles. It would be a bit stranger if he recorded this and died shortly after, but Nirvana did actually play this song live ONCE. Go back and listen to a lot of Linkin Park songs, and you can really see how dark some of them are, and you have to wonder if Chester was really channeling his depression into his songs and that someone could have helped them sooner.

    Sometimes saying "I didn't put too much thought" can also be a defense mechanism. If you write something that is deeply personal, you may not want people to know how personal it is.

    It frightens me how many people have a Siri or an Alexa in their home. They willingly set up monitoring devices, giving away their privacy freely, all so that they don't have to type things into a search bar. The trade off is shockingly unbalanced. It's like hearing about a popular device that tracks your movement and records everything, but makes perfect toast every time.

    Yesss, things like positive self talk are so often put down as generic, platitude, mumbo jumbo, but the process of knowing yourself and respecting yourself is HARD and invaluable. In a society where we focus heavily on the external, whether you are a spiritual person or not, making an actual conscious connection with yourself is profound and game changing. And how can we truly love and respect anyone or anything else when we don't take care of ourselves too?
