Ricky, you are legend on what you all did to this boat. Perfect example of how SA people can do anything. I used Sigma, International, StoneCor and Jotun on the rigs. Jotun was the best we used offshore. Whichever you use, make sure it is 2 part epoxy and follow the spec to the T. Your prep was proper...
Hey Dave! Simone here. Of course! I have two cousins both in the military. One is in the US Army and the other in the US Navy. The US is a great country & it's awesome having people like you protecting it. Thank you for your service sir! Hopefully soon we can be in the US sailing that coast line! 😊
If these two were to put their boat on the market for sale (which I doubt they would and for good reason) it would be a steal at almost any asking price. Quality build with no corner cut.
Most of the sigma products amazing provided that the proper preperation work is done . On a wooden boat i would recomend priming the boat with sigma prime 200 first ( this is a two pack epoxy primer , great for above and below the waterline ) . Then apply a sigma top coat sigma 500 or 550 two part polyurethane. If you would like morr info, please check out PPG sigma paints online . Loads or product data sheets application methods
on the subject of masking tape we have 3 types in Canada, the beige type which is not ideal for painting the green type good for a few days and will peel well and the blue type which is good but does not hold as well
Good advice, those foam rollers really don't last long lol. I used Jotun Hardtop AX and it's worn through already from fenders.. that said where she is moored is very rough... Must give the brand you recommend a look...
Those foam rollers don't last but the finish of the roller is pretty nice. I guess it hurts less to chuck a foam roller... Jotuns a pretty good brand.. it should be fine.. but try out the other brands. Maybe it works better out for you?
Hi, how satisfied are you with the SigmaDur 550 topcoat after two years, and did you spray it or roll/tip it? I plan to use this paint too for my boat.
We're pretty happy with it. We sprayed the outside & some of the interior but mainly rolled on the interior. It's a pretty tough paint as it's a 2 part paint.
@@livingwiththemaias i plan to roll and tip it, as I don't have access to the necessary spray equipment and I have no experience with spraying. Do you would say I can get decent results with rolling and tipping?
You can but you'd have to add some Thinners in for it to self level. It's got a good pigmentation to it so you won't need to do numerous coats, but as you know paint is only as good as your prep and primer. 👍🏻 😊
If you guys are still in PE, I'd love to come and visit in the new year. Otherwise I'll be in Cape Town for Christmas. I'd really like to congratulate you in person and I don't get to SA very often. I won't take too much of your time, I promise! :)
We can't guarantee we will be here.. we most likely will be in Cape Town.. So maybe we meet up when we are in Cape Town? At this rate who knows where we will be. Once the boat is done then we will be able to predict these things. Keep us updated, would love to meet. 😊
Awesome! Probs CTN then. I'll keep in touch. I've liked your fb page. Does that enable you to PM me? If so, do that and I'll give you contact details. :)
Depends what you're painting and what primer you are going to us? Wouldn't recommend painting the outside of a fiberglass boat with enamel even if you got a good primer.
Saved us a lot of time trying to fair everything smooth! I know I need a Navy Shirt. My cousin actually is in the Navy but I haven't visited him yet to get one. Once we are in the states again I'll for sure go get my navy shirt! 😜
Hey Bryan, my cousin is in the US Army. She was based at Ft Sill, but is now in Ft Hood. When we went over there to visit her for our honeymoon she showed us the base & i grab a couple of shirts. 😊
Ah, just wondering it is a sort of random place to see a t-shirt from on a South African sailing channel. I live near there and can't imagine many places further from the ocean. Love the channel, can't wait to see you afloat someday soon.
Hey guys great video. Will the 2 pack poly paints also eat through those foam rollers or is it only the epoxy primers? Maybe I’m wrong but I think the “Deckra unimarine paints” in your description should be “Dekro unymarine paints”? Anyway thanks for all the advice, great video as allways
Hi both, the latex gloves are permeable for a lot of material. To protect your health it is a need to use i.e. specialised MAPA gloves (the green ones last for all things you work with. I know it is not comfortable working with this MAPA gloves, but it gets better and better. It is not only the matter that the latex gloves are permeable - the biggest problem is they allow the harmful substance coming in, but because of the molekulare size after diluted some fat of your skin they cannot go out. So you get a higher and higher concentration between skin an latex. Because of this it is often better not to use such gloves and work with bare hands. you can use the latex gloves prevent i.e. the MAPA gloves from getting sticky or for applying 1-K paint. Guys, maybe a good paint-in-your-hair tip. When I was young and still had a lot of really blond hair, I was painting plinths in a corridor, while somebody else painted finishing laths between the wall and the ceiling. We made the same progression, so no problem. Untill the other guy took a break. And another one, and another one. Long story short, I got so fed up with that heavy wooden ladder that was continually standing in the way, that I hit it hard, and it bounced through the corridor. Thing was, though, that there was a liter of dark brown paint - NOTTHEWATERBASEDTYPE!!! - on that ladder, and it landed upside down on my blond hair. We tried a lot, but the only thing that really helped, was real butter! :-) Greetingz, Wim
Thank you so much for the concern Mark, we are okay! It's a very unsure time for this country. It is very much doom & gloom for a lot of the South African farmers (both white & black) when it comes to the unsurety if their land will be taken from them. The president says he will do no such thing.. but yet our constitution is being changed for land expropriation without compensation.. The farm murders & murders in general are a real thing. It's at a all time high, but the government tries to cover it up as much as possible.

Agreed love Jotun below waterline. Resene stuff in Aus/NZ is great but the advice here on primers is spot on.
It's so helpful that you are spreading your knowledge to those of us who haven't got the foggiest notion.
Thank you for wearing the US Army shirt. I am a old army guy. 12th Group Special Forces (Green Beret). Airborne!! Love the videos as always.

Thanks for a another great video. Pool coat :) now I get it! Cheers
Hahaha, it's our damn accent 😜
One of the cool things about your channel, not the boring news anchor, sounds we get in the states. Real world :)
Thanks so much!

Thank you so much! We don't plan on selling her but sailing her soon... 😜
Hope she will sell fast though when we do sell her.
Sir please helm me what kind of paint for fiber glass boat?
Great video..
Thank you for sharing this video
Thanks Judi ☺
With the roller pad you can put masking tape all over the pad then slowly remove it to extract any loose hairs.
Go Army....Good presentation.
Thank you so much Peter.
Loved the intro music. Thank you for the awesome advice.
Thanks Basil! Thanks for the support & helping us keep sane!

What about Enamel? International Paints do one. Any Comments?
Depends what you're painting and what primer you are going to us? Wouldn't recommend painting the outside of a fiberglass boat with enamel even if you got a good primer.
Understand the whole Stone chip paint thing now .. that was a good choice..
You need a U.S. NAVY t-shirt.. 😀
send them one.

It eventually does but not as fast. I'm not sure if it's unimarine or unymarine... 😂
I forgot to ask, what antifouling paint did you use?
We haven't gotten our anti foul yet. Most probably will stick with PPG.
love the shirts!!!! :)
