A lot of people forget that Windu literally walks the line between light and dark, so he uses rules to keep himself sufficiently under control and in the light. i dont think he had any maliscious intent, just that he didnt trust Dooku's attachment to his emotions. his greatest strength is his greatest weakness, it is what it is unfortunately. i like how his over riggidity painted a picture of how the council's adhesion to their archaic values blinded them in the long run. Sad thing is it says more about their peers than either of them.

Mace Windu is the most notable example of the problems within the Jedi Order. He's been that way ever since the Prequels and that's why I appreciate his character. George Lucas managed to condense most of the flaws that ended up destroying the Jedi into a single person. And yet there are still imbeciles who say that he doesn't know how to write.
To be fair to Mace, there is one positive character trait he had that most other Jedi lacked. Self-awareness. This is exemplified by his Vaapad fighting style, which requires an insane level of self-control, so only a man who is fully aware of his own flaws can master it. However, without that self-awareness, Mace would 100% have fallen to the Dark side. He was on the verge of doing so in his final moments and you can see it in Samuel L Jackson's eyes as he tries to kill Palpatine.
Mace is a brilliantly written character. I'd probably want to kill him if I met him in person but there's a lot of nuance in his personality that people tend to overlook.

I think Windu was true to his character when carrying out the "by-the-book" orders from the Jedi Council. He didn't change his behavior because he thought he might get a Jedi Council seat out of it.
Dooku all but confirms this when he says to Windu on their inbound flight to Raxus Secundus, "Your devotion to rules is sometimes inspiring and sometimes maddening". To me, it sounds like Windu was a stickler for the rules. Dooku even acknowledges this as a consistent (if not permanent) character trait and in that instance he's annoyed by it.

I so want to see a series based Dooku and Qui-Gon together. There is sooooo much that those two shared and how they really represented what Jedi ought to be. A lot of people failed to realized that the Jedi during the time episode 1 on up were just a shell of what they use to be. I'm starting to see why it took a thousand years, on a Galactic scale, for the Sith to win this one. Every one of them patiently waited for the Galaxy, the Republic and the Jedi to go too soft, out of touch and corrupted.

Not in the same sense. It's more like how Obi-wan went along with many of Anakin's plans while also pointing out the recklessness of them. Dooku is someone capable of working outside of the Jedi Council's orders when he sees reason to, however he chose to have Dooku take charge on these actions and refused any accountability for the actions he went along with. Mace could have chosen to blame himself for the Senator's death, failing to act quickly enough to save him, but he cast blame on Dooku's strategy. Either because he refused to acknowledge his own fault in choosing to go along with Dooku's plan against his own judgement, or because it was more convenient to distance himself from Dooku, this being left ambiguous because we see the events from Dooku's unanswered perspective.
He also says that Mace *was* a Maverick in past tense. Mace used to act more like Dooku in the past, but gravitated more towards following the council's orders instead of putting his judgement above theirs. Mace doesn't believe in allowing one person to make the important calls, which is one of the reasons why he trusts in the Council and dislikes the idea of questioning authority. We don't get to see what led him to that point, and it's likely because Dooku did not either.

Mace is more of a strict Dad in my eyes, not some power hungry guy like people try to make him out to be.

It’s hard to believe only 20 ever left the order in its entire existence unless I misunderstood what the lost 20 are.

Dooku says at the beginning of this episode, "your devotion to keeping the rules is as inspiring as it is maddening." (Paraphrasing). So there was no surprise that Mace was chosen between the two of them. That aside, there is often more factors that go into a decision than one single incident. In "Master and Apprentice" Quigon was considered and asked to be on the council. Yoda voted against it. Not because he wouldn't be a good fit but simply, and profoundly, he saw a different path for Quigon. He was right. Quigon turned down the invitation to pursue that path. So it is likely that the same applies here. Consider Dukoo's path (now as an apprentice to Sidious) could have been clouded by the dark side. (Like Anakin's was)

I came to a big realization writing this post. Mace Windu saw Dooku's shatterpoint, which is consistent with the books. His shatterpoint is ego. Really, Mace cannot backstab Dooku. He was chosen for the Council because he was the premiere Jedi of his time. He followed and enforced all of the rules and his beliefs were unassailable, no matter what darkness he faced. Of course he was picked for the Council. Dooku on the other hand was flirting with the darkside regularly to destroy those lesser evil beings. Of course he wasn't chosen for the Council. But Qui-gon did have similar views to Dooku, only in that Qui-gon was a protector of the weak and innocent, and would take liberties to follow the light side of the Force, and help people. But the difference between Qui-gon and Dooku was their ego. Qui-gon did not struggle with ego. So when things did not go his way, it did not draw him closer to the darkside. It wasn't personal to Qui-gon. He wasn't forcing himself upon the situation as Dooku would and did. He stayed in the will of the Force as a servant. Dooku went forward as a Master. Mace really did see Dooku's shatterpoint.

Qui-Gon Jinn was always THE best Jedi in the Prequels. He was the only one who completely followed the Will of the Force without any ulterior motive, something that even Yoda didn't do. Yoda was comfy in his cushy position as Jedi Grand Master, where nobody criticised his judgement and those who did were either kept off the Council (Qui-Gon) or outright abandoned the Jedi Order (Dooku). Even those who disagreed with Yoda were very careful about how they expressed their disagreements, like typical politicians who want to stay on their superiors' good side, which was essentially what the members of the Jedi Council had become. Palpatine was right about Yoda's arrogance and reluctance to lose his power. If Qui-Gon were in Yoda's position, he would have given it up willingly if he thought it was the Will of the Force.

I'm probably the lone wolf here but I honestly think that Dooku would have taken the seat on the Jedi Council. Too many just look at how similar Qui Gon Jinn and his master are. What I'm looking at is where they are not, something that Star Wars Tales also points out. Dooku's arrogance lies in his anger at seeing how the Council is now failing in their purported mission and not following their own teachings by deferring to the Senate and, inaccurately, blindly thinking that both ruling bodies are 'clean', innocent of any real atrocities not needed. He knows who Palpatine is, a secret he has kept from his own Padawan (he thinks). I believe he originally intended to use the Council seat to throw away Palatine's mask and stop the war, at least among the planets, earning him the right-of-way to crush Palpatine and the Sith himself and gain the leadership of the Council. Unlike Qui Gon, he believes himself to be a leader. Yet Qui Gon refused the Council seat for two reasons: he knew they were being led astray into their doom and he knew the will of the Force said that he was not the one to correct this. He truly believed in the Jedi teachings that decreed above all that you should be mindful of the living force, a belief taught to him by his master, Dooku. But above all, Qui Gon knew that his master was too full of anger and arrogance to follow the practices that he preached! So he wanted no part in the Jedi Council on any level! He wanted to train the Chosen One to defeat them all and fulfill the will of the Force. I think he knew he might die when he faced Maul alone, but he also saw the way clearing for Obi Wan to train Anakin. He knew all things must balance. Still, if Dooku had gotten that seat, one has to wonder if Qui Gon would have lived. One has to wonder.

So, why didn't Dooku look upon the chance to actually 'OUT' Palpatine as a Sith in order to score brownie points with the Jedi & have Palps removed as an obstacle? Dooku would still have an 'empire' to rule over & he could eventually start his own version of a Separatist Jedi Council that answered to him.

However, that is the issue. Both mace and the council were content to let the death go without investigation. They were content to stick to the books even at the death of a fellow jedi. Only dooku wanted actual answers. Morally, I think dooku was in the right and this put him at odds with the council. If anything it was a testament to how far the council had fallen.

Mace came across more strict because he knew what was at stake to the order because he loved the Republic and the Jedi even more so , if you see the deleted scene with obi wan and Mace at the temple you can see the genuine friendship and respect the masters had for each other and anakin had to earn his trust .

He wanted to be known as a powerful and unique jedi. The big hero who inspired others. This great swordsman who could dance with the darkside, and who sat on the council. Thats one reason i think why he didnt like anakin. Because anakin was the star. He was very powerful in the force, the general and hero of the republic, who had the respect of the troops, with a close relationship to the supreme chancelor. Windu lowkey tried to undermine him, and was passive agressive and jealous of him. Even after he revealed the chancelor was sidious he didnt take him with him, but went of to arrest him himself. He wanted to be the one who brought sidious down.

I’m sorry but the last several times I’ve seen videos on Dave Filoni animated shows, I’ve seen several videos, criticizing Mace Windu. I can’t help but suspect that Dave Filoni doesn’t like him. The reason for this is actually several. First Windu’s relentless behavior towards Asoka after the temple bombing. Filoni always makes other characters look bad in order to make his look good (for example Barris Offee who had no business business being the culprit, the council being way over the top in their accusations, and acting like it was her trial the whole time.) Even in deleted scenes Windu is very cold towards the mention of Asoka. Finally in season seven of the clone wars after Asoka defeated Maul (again Filoni severely underpowered Maul Making a Soka, the Victor, which she should not have been able to do) he reveals Sidious’s plans which she tries to revealed to the council. Windu shut her down, despite the fact that he’s the one that bought the subject of the Sith up. This makes the fall of the Jedi order indirectly his fault. What does Filoni have against him? The novel Shatterpoint and ROTS Novelization reveal that mace is a by the books Jedi, but at the same time he loves the Republic he serves, and while he and Anakin didn’t agree, most of the time, he did believe Anakin would destroy the Sith, and was the Jedi Orders Shatterpoint. It’s true mace can be a stern and strict individual, but deep down, he cares about his Jedi comrades. If you made it this far thanks for reading.
