There are two filmmakers who understand the pulse of the Indian audience better than many others -- Rohit Shetty and Rajkumar Hirani. Both are poles apart as makers, yet they know the insight into the viewing behaviour of the Indian audience, which translates into successful box office. I have my theories for both of them. However, I have only theorized their style and decision of filmmaking. And that is independent of the casting of the film (which is separate altogether). If Ayushman Khurranna stars in Simbaa and Rajkumar Rao stars in PK, the situation won't remain same. Anyway, now, the theories: Rohit Shetty first tries to understand the audience, the masses, and then tailor-makes a film for them. He decides on the ingredients first -- action, comedy, drama, tragedy -- and then incorporate all of it in a larger-than-life set up. Even as he tells in this video, the elaborate entry of Ajay Devgan in Simbaa was pre-planned keeping in mind that it has potential to evoke whistles and claps. Thus, he decides upon the ingredients (backed with research and discretion as what might work for the urban mass ), creates a formula, churns out a script from it, and then executes and presents it like an aspirational entertainer. Rajkumar Hirani's process is the reverse of that. First he conceptualizes the script irrespective of the sociology of audience and the commerce. But once the film is in place, he modifies it from a commercial perspective -- which scene to punctuate with background score, where to dumb it down, when to manipulate audiences into taking sides and also when not, and when to state the obvious (tell, don't show!). The success of these filmmakers is interesting as it can reveal a lot about the Indian audience. Our country is heterogeneous. Thus, there should be films for everyone. The insight into why someone is liking a film, be it of Shetty's or Hirani's, is interesting for and significant to our film industry - both for the art and the trade.
I really liked the interview... The questions and the intention was genuine. She did not have an agenda to trash this. Rohit was very very honest in his response. I think it's high time that people stop expecting every movie to have a slot for women. When Mary Kom can survive just on the shoulders of PC why can't Simmba stand on the shoulders of a man? We always blame men for not joining the fight for women and when they do we cry that women had no role to play. Simmba was a commercial movie with a great reach and did not show any woman as weak or incapable.
@@prashantsingh9068 May be read my response again and then ask this? I am not a fool to write about Mary Kom if I don't even know who she is! Mary Kom's story did not need a 'hero' and we happily watched 'her' story without questioning the contribution of the men around her (although her husband is a great support system for her) but in Simmba we question the role of a woman in finding justice to another woman, so why cannot this be a story of a 'hero'?
Ranjitha Kashyap Mary Kom plays in the Boxing ring not men in her life. Plus her husband's role is as big as hers. In the film Mary never fought for saving men around her. She fought for herself. Your comparison of a silly dumb masala movie to a biopic tells about you that you are too dumb to understand.
@@prashantsingh9068 This is the general problem I see in people who dismiss masala movies and do not like to see anything positive in these. I don't think Simmba was dumb... Calling it dumb just because it's a masala movie is harsh... Just like calling me dumb just because my opinion/perspective does not match with yours... I am practically a stranger to you... you can disagree to my point but calling me dumb is so not cool. As far as Mary Kom is concerned, I used the 'movie' to compare two stories said from a male and a female perspective. When a female story is shown, we do not expect the role of the man to be substantial but it's not the same way other way around. We are not comparing the stories, but the perspective of the people about different movies and genres. I am done explaining. Take care.

I didn‘t know about this but as soon as Rohit said young actors don‘t wanna do it I was like '100% Ranveer wanted to and was so excited to do it but no one else did'. And yet RK is talking about wanting to do a movie with Ranveer and again I am 100% sure he got this offered but he didn‘t take it.
Nora Hoti RK is just saying it for news 😒. He was offered to play a role with ranveer in gullyboy and he declined it even varun didn’t agree. Also Karan johar wanted ranveer and rk In takht but rk didn’t agree so karan went for Vicky. #insecurity
The way you handled the female representation issue in his films was very tactful and you did a great job in keeping on the topic and digging deeper to get a meaningful answer from him. It's not easy to confront such big directors about issues like this that they sometimes don't even know they're responsible for perpetuating, good job!
Devika Lakhote she should have the guts to talk with Hirani like she did with Rohit. Sanju was the most problematic film justifying the actions of a womanizer and bragging about having 340 girlfriends still she didn’t say a word since it was under her husband’s production
To all the haters accusing them for copying south if they have got all the rights to do so what's the problem with you guys?? And if people didn't like it the film would not have been a blockbuster, so as an audience don't try to act smart sitting somewhere with a phone when your comment doesn't impact anyone 😆
@The Vigilante CULT first of all i am not an indian and where did i criticize south movies???? I simply said when his team got the rights to do a remake there is nothing to accuse. If you don't understand what i said read few times before commenting.
Anupama Chopra just drop it. You know what you're signing up for when you go to watch Rohit Shetty film. So stop nagging about the female characters. People got entertained and one can't pick on the less female dominated characters
Ya u r absolutely right but rohit himself put rape as a plot device....and then female characters voice n significance n treatment of that issue become important. Rohit could have made his masala type movie with any plot n still ppl would have loved it in theatres and then the talk about female agency would not have make sense but since he himself included rape as a plot, u got to answer n discuss about the female characters in the movie n he can't escape dat discussion.
What I like about Rohit shetty is that his commercial movies are not misogynistic like Judwaa 2, Pyaar ka punchnama & Sonu ke titu ke sweety.....There's always something for the women to play in his movies.....His films aren't toxic commercial entertainers.
Listening to Rohit I can't help but think of the word Nincompoop. And yet he is not the stupidest person in this interview. What a smashing combination. Well done both 👏👏
It took him as many as 12 films to sound so intelligent. Arguably the best Rohit shetty interview and the credit for that goes to those wonderful questions asked by even more wonderful Anupama chopra.
Got to see humane side of Rohit Shetty in this interview. I always thought he was arrogant but no longer. He is v methodical in his approach. All d best for new films.
Thank you Anupama for asking such questions and bigger thank you to Rohit Shetty for doing this interview and answering those questions. I like when directors don’t run away from criticism and face such questions.
This man has put the commercial cinema on track. His style of film making is difference from other. 8th 100Cr film is not a joke. Haters were very harsh on him before the release that isne to copy kiya hai n bla bla... Jinhone original story k sath films banai unhone kya achieve kar liya. 😂 😂 😂

@@sahanpatel641 yeah I know but transformas that's fun to watch that you can agree on
@Raman Sharma better plot, hahaha that's cute
He is constantly laughing. He is so happy. :)
This has to be Anupama's best interview yet. Loved the questions and the way she presented them!
Ranveer was more than happy to do ramlakhan with any actor but no other young actor agreed to do it. He talked about recently
Is it?
Baidyanath Samal Yes. The film didn’t happen cause no other young actor agreed to do it with ranveer. They’re insecure just like Rohit said
I didn‘t know about this but as soon as Rohit said young actors don‘t wanna do it I was like '100% Ranveer wanted to and was so excited to do it but no one else did'.
#insecurity
Nora Hoti most young actors are full of ego and insecurity but act cool to fool the audience.
At least rohit’s intentions were pure
14:26 don't just kill them straightaway. Tadpa tadpa ke maaro
True
Correct
Loved the interview.
Anupama the way she articulated the question and brings out the conversation is just amazing.
To all the haters accusing them for copying south if they have got all the rights to do so what's the problem with you guys?? And if people didn't like it the film would not have been a blockbuster, so as an audience don't try to act smart sitting somewhere with a phone when your comment doesn't impact anyone 😆
Dude those peeps who do that are different set of people.
Who just want to troll people
@The Vigilante CULT first of all i am not an indian and where did i criticize south movies????

I don't know why but for some reason I really enjoyed this interview. It was like his films ENTERTAINING.
It would be awesome if deepika is playing female rohit shetty cop 😎
Honesty and simplicity perceives within him. .
What I like about Rohit shetty is that his commercial movies are not misogynistic like Judwaa 2, Pyaar ka punchnama & Sonu ke titu ke sweety.....There's always something for the women to play in his movies.....His films aren't toxic commercial entertainers.
Rohiths clarity of mind is unbelievable, iam damn sure this man will make a studio in ten years as he said.hats off to him
Love these interviews so much. On it now! ♥
The way he talks about his team in every interview speaks volumes about his nature.
Listening to Rohit I can't help but think of the word Nincompoop. And yet he is not the stupidest person in this interview. What a smashing combination. Well done both 👏👏
He's just so sorted as a director..He has a clarity like no other rite now
Hit Machine Rohit Shetty ♥️🔥
Waiting for #Sooryavanshii ♥️
It took him as many as 12 films to sound so intelligent. Arguably the best Rohit shetty interview and the credit for that goes to those wonderful questions asked by even more wonderful Anupama chopra.
The movie was a great watch, love his work ! These interviews are amazing too
Got to see humane side of Rohit Shetty in this interview. I always thought he was arrogant but no longer. He is v methodical in his approach. All d best for new films.
It take effort to do remakes and even more effect to screw up the said remake
Thank you Anupama for asking such questions and bigger thank you to Rohit Shetty for doing this interview and answering those questions. I like when directors don’t run away from criticism and face such questions.
This man has put the commercial cinema on track.
His style of film making is difference from other. 8th 100Cr film is not a joke.
Haters were very harsh on him before the release that isne to copy kiya hai n bla bla... Jinhone original story k sath films banai unhone kya achieve kar liya. 😂 😂 😂
Secret superstar:
budget: 25 crores
net gross: 900+ crores (only 90 crores from India, rest is from China on a revenue sharing basis)
Content is the king, pity is that our country suffers from cinematic illiteracy. A billion people, yet no Indian film has won an Oscar yet (not that it's an absolute parameter to judge any film industry, but still). The good thing is, we the audience can change this, and it's happening.
Gangs of wasseypur has been listed as one of the best movies of 21st century you unorganised grabasstic piece of amphibian shit.
This is an honest man or I must say human being. Way 2 go rohit sir. Keep making film like this.
Rohit calling suedo intelligent in front of Anupama 😀😀😀
Only Rohit can do that rest of the intellectual (Anurag Kashyap, Prakash Raj gang) are busy supporting JNU Leftists
Jo “pseudo intellectual” jaise terms use karte hai wo dimaag se paidal hote hai. Just because u dont understand some ones point of view does not mean they are pseudos. Its just that your own intellect falls short.
@An Avenger lol well spotted
@@sandykhp yes, person with such success ratio is dimaag se paidal but people who can't give decent hit or single blockbuster are intellectuals. They will tell what he should do & what he should not.

Rohit Shetty is such a humble director♥️ never fails to mention his Team. Such a cutie. One of the best directors.
Rohit shetty sir please make a remake of "THERI" in hindi.. It will be fun.. And make it a part of singham universe.. Congratulations for simmba.. Ala re ala simmba ala..

1, 2, 3, 4 dance floor song (Priyamani) in Chennai express - isn't that an item song??
But it doesn't objectify women,we all loved it, it's more of an entertainment song
It's always a treat to listen you Rohit sir
‘According to Rohit shetty, audience have to think, I want to be like and dress up like hero’ Lol, this man’s perspective can’t stoop down to any level further
Evan 30 i guess he's catering to the masses out there. and after all, most of the audiences of hindi cinema until mid 2000's were like that, because of the hero-centric planned treatment of the film, where most films had an agenda to elevete heroism and make it all about the leading man.
anon He is stuck there itself. And he will be stuck all his life. I promise

Love his movies or not, but Rohit Shetty is very very clear headed about his vision! That is his strength. And he seems to be his own best critic too! Respect!!
Try interviewing with short film makers. Their struggles, their journey and future plans, would sound interesting.
Akhil Vaka +1 she shouldn’t reward filmmakers with unhealthy messages to the society.
@@additect That's not what I meant. I said create awareness with budding film makers. Every profession comes with hardship, not necessarily caused by humans, could be many like finance, marketing, streaming apps and their policies, TH-cam business, how to enter film industry who has no contacts. How to approach producers. So much to be learn that side.
Clean, clear ,honest words from The Man
as 16 year old I had complex seeing Akshay Kumar/Salman Khan and others on screen because I knew i could be nothing like them. And original creators need to get appreciated for making dis.
I also hope that he creates a female cop film!! I love his movies!
Calling a pseudo-journalist on her face :) Anupama if she is so much concerned about the message being passed by films and using rape as a means to earn a blockbuster need to question her husband about making "Sanju"

But simba was changed after the interval.
Plus temper was such a great script either
@The Vigilante CULT dude your comment itself shows that you are racist 🙄
Loved the interview Anu! May I ask for a little crash course in asking such intriguing questions in an interview? 😂
Rohit Shetty had the courage to call Anupama Chopra ‘pseudo intellectual ‘ to her face and she could not do a thing about it. He is right. Overanalysis is not needed here. Every movie has a purpose. The message of this movie was not that important. The treatment was. Without trivializing the rape issue, you are not supposed to over analyze the issue as it is going to become law.
Exactly.... She needs to understand this "Overanalysis is not needed"
You are the best director ever I really pray you will get more success in your life because you really deserve
