  • If founder Elon Musk is right, Tesla Motors just might reinvent the American auto industry-with specialized robots building slick electric cars in a factory straight from the future. That's where the battery-powered Model S is born.

    This is so cool!! It's amazing they can have one robot that does the seats *AND* and the windshields. Those are some tight spaces inside the car and yet it doesn't scratch the dash or upholstery.

      Every robotic application in this video is of 1980s vintage. The glass sealant dispensing utilizes a fixed position sealant nozzle, that's pre 1982 stuff. A programmable counter rotating nozzle saved material and improved quality. Clean factories became a popular thing around 40 years ago.

      If technology created more labor requirement than it saved, no one would bother with it.
      Sure, there will be jobs in the robot industry but they will be few compared to the amount of labor saved by robots, and adequately sophisticated robots would be able to make their own copies with minimum maintenance. To iterate: this is a good thing. People don't need jobs per se; they need food, clothing, housing, transport, items of vanity. In a largely automated economy, most of these can be easily provided if the society changes to accomodate for the possibility where the labor of most people is pretty much unneeded. And it will have to, because it's hard to ignore something as obvious.

    i see many Comments of People complaining there are no many Workers assembling the Cars because Robots do everything...
    YES True, Robots do all the Construction/Assembly, but who do you think maintains those Robots Functional?
    The use of Robots doesn't kill jobs, it optimizes production output and shifts jobs to a different function.
    Instead of having a bunch of workers flipping Wrenches to tighten Nuts all day for $14 an hour, they hire Trained Technicians for $20 that know how to Program and Fix the Machines.
    So rather than having 3000 People building 10 Cars a Day, you pay 3000 People to make sure the Robots keep Working nicely and make 150 Cars a Day.
    in any case you employee about the same amount of People, the Productivity on the other hand increases a lot... the other Option would be to hire 10thousand People to obtain the same Productivity of the Robots, but at that point the cost of Labor would be too high making the Cars too expensive, thus forcing to move production to Countries where labor is cheap.
    I'd rather keep the Robots and make stuff in America by hiring a good Maintenance Crew that keeps all the Machines running flawlessly all day long!

    • @bobbyberetta4206
      @bobbyberetta4206 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Plus someone's gotta maintain and fix the robots

    • @rd434
      @rd434 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      The problem with this is you dont need that much technician to maintain and fix robots or whatever failing in the system. 30 people $14/hour each painting Tesla frame for example. That will cost tesla more than $700K per year
      Now a gigantic painting robot cost $500 upfront, paint more car in a day, work overtime, stable and robust, only need a team of 5 technician to maintain. Now that is the problem, the team of thirty car painter will be laid off for 5 technician and a gigantic painting robot.
      But anyway, robots will make things cheaper so maybe a Tesla will only cost a $5 coupon.

    • @JoeCnNd
      @JoeCnNd 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One guy can maintain multiple robots where those multiple robots killed jobs. It's good for the company bad for the people losing jobs.

    • @Bragison8
      @Bragison8 7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Robots absolutely do kill jobs, the same way all the previous inventions like tractors and conveyor belts killed jobs, as they make it so that less humans are required overall. The problem with modern automation is it targets almost everyone's fields and we can't stop it, and this is why we need a UBI.

      I agree with you. I think a combination of automation and skilled labor is key but would regret their not being a stronger drive toward skilled human labor. I import consumer goods (apparel and housewares) from China and India and there is no reason why we can't produce high-spec goods domestically. We won't be able to compete with mass-market products until we can resolve the cost of labor, but there is no reason we can't sell luxury goods across the world! Dealing with production in Asia these days is a nightmare because the markets change so quickly now. This is a better time than ever to adapt to domestic.

    One of the interesting things about this plant is the investment in white painted ceilings and the clean polished floors. Both of which are likely carry overs from Elon Musk's other business, namely, SpaceX - where "clean rooms" are an absolute requirement for spacecraft assembly. The white ceilings also help to distribute plant lighting as well.

      the goal of car is to have as small as possible drag coefficent... if they tried to make it generate electricity from wind that would add drag when driving. Its basic physics, you would gain nothing. allthough solar would be nice but not if u have a garage and want to keep your car under roof. Just buy solar panels for your roof man

      @tamasaron5129 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, but you seem to lack complete knowledge of physics. Please try to pull your hair like Munchhausen, maybe you can lift yourself and fly to space. Wind power! The loss of energy by the drag coefficient would be higher than the produced energy to accelerate the car. Solar energy while driving, lol?! Do you know how much energy that gives? Its proportional to irradiation and the surface are of the car. Maximum 1kW/ square metre could be gained theoretical, thats maximum 7HP for a car on a shinny day. Seven freakin horsepower, good luck with it, you can power your bicycle! :)

    There were also people freaking out about bicycles, automobiles, photography, etc. People hate change, as it threatens their grip on reality. We're a service economy now, not manufacturing or blue collar one. Robots and 3D printing has effectively eliminated that. It's neither good nor bad, it just is. This is the new normal, and that's okay. The people that work at that factory must adore their jobs, and have pride. The robots? Give it a 100 years or so, and they'll feel the same.
