The level of musicianship and execution that they drill to is amazing to watch and exhilarating to hear. Even if you want to play a different style of music, which most do, then you still should know about their performances and understand the level of work needed to get a massive group of drummers to all play as well as they do.

A lot of phenomenal drumset players come from corps backgrounds, and a lot of them go on to teach entire generations the joys of percussion. Which inspires even more kids to become drummers, which further spreads and expands this amazing community's reach. And let's be honest with ourselves, the networking is invaluable. How often are you around 10-20 other good drummers? How many other musical endeavours puts you around that many other drummers that often? The connections made are one of the biggest benefits of being involved in the community.

AznAfroMan513 It's uniform, and there's a chance that the members may not have all had the same clothing to wear except for jeans. For what it's worth, it's not that uncommon for marching members to wear jeans during the summer in their free time. Your body grows accustomed to a lot of heat and expending a lot of energy while marching, so (in my experience anyway) it's pretty comfortable to wear jeans in 'drum corps mode'.
Wow this is hitting the nostalgia strings hard. I learned this lick in the 90s. I almost don't dare trying it again. Almost. 60 seconds later...Yeah, I'm gonna need to practice that a lot more. I thought I still had some chops but I was wrong, very wrong.
@@afterburn2600 I'm right there with you. Story: I was learning this in high school. I tutored with the Glassmen center snare and he was kind-of preparing me for my first drum corps audition. When I was in the solo audition room, I played some exercises and what-not. Then he just said, "okay...now play something to impress me." I was dumbfounded. I couldn't think of what to do. In my head I was like "I'm 17 years old how am I supposed to impress the snare tech at a drum corps." So I just said to myself "play Ditty." I started playing it, and halfway through, the tech just jumped in and started playing it, to, which I didn't expect. I started messing up, and then I just botched it entirely. It was horrible and I was embarrassed. Everyone outside could hear it. I was beat red and didn't look away from the ground. I never got a spot. I stopped playing drums altogether after that. I was so ashamed and angry. Years later, I'm in my 30's now. I started learning this again and I said to myself "I'm going to learn this, and master it. I need to finish this thing." Like you, I can play it at 85% speed. It's the part with the triples at the end that I can't get. Anyway, let me know when you master it!

my old drumline instructor who was a snare for DCI at one point in the 80s used to wear a Rush hat
