for clarification, by now she has already long been to the vet. the videos are just playing catch up at this point. just wanted to reassure everyone!
Have you tried the pet insurance trupanon?
@@butternutyeeetsbanana.-.5389Pet insurance just covers cats and dogs afaik.
I hope she will be okay
She's nervous but it seems like she understands you're not a threat. I hope her leg can be saved and she can get the hocks healed up nicely.
Her beak already looks better. It’s amazing what even a few days of careful attention can do
coconut oil can work wonders when beaks are dry!
I have three macaws, so I feel your pain. ... _You are every bird's hero!_
So true. Brock is a blessing to birbs!
thank you for dedicating your life to saving these animals that often go ignored.
it's my honor
Maybe get one of those small cat water fountains that burbles the water. Will look like running water.
I think she moves to the floor because it's smooth and cool which feels good on her sore hocks.
Yeah it very much looked like she was in terrible pain. She's been terribly neglected & should have been taken to a vet long ago. Her legs look horrific. Bless you for looking after her and trying to tackle this.
to be fair, the condition of her hocks are only from her inability to move due to arthritis. they got in the shape they're in because of issues outside of her previous keepers control (age). she had a lovely life but unfortunately aging eventually takes over and it's hard to take note of everything when there are hundreds of other birds to look after. that's why she ended up with me. so I could give her special attention that would be hard to do otherwise. it's just unfortunate that her hocks ended up getting scraped up beforehand.

Would soaking her feet and hocks in Epson salt be a possibility? I've seen it do wonders for chickens and ducks who get bumble-foot or some other type of sores.
Dude, I started rescuing pigeons a few months ago and it has been the most unreal, wild experience of emotion. I am so grateful for you being licensed and willing to help these creatures. Birds are something else man. Thank you
That looks like a broken pelvis. We had a racing pigeon call Pied, high-condition racing bird, very powerful. It got spooked by a hawk and hit a window. We only kept pied going because Pied wanted to live. It even had to dangle for weeks in a sock - There was just nothing the avian vet themselves could do. But Pied didn't mind their sock providing a human to preen and be preened by happens at least twice a day. Spent the rest of it's very very happy ( but brain damaged, mangled life ) life sat on it's arse pretty much like that. It was the best pigeon we ever had. A cocky hen - Preen your eyebrows one minuet, decide to have a play fight the next ! It was one of the the most cheerful creatures I've ever met. Certainly liked living. But that is pretty much the position it was stuck in. Could fly. Couldn't stand up. Lost them eventually ( probably a hawk ) but we just weren't going to take The Garden away from this bird that loves it so much ( only put inside it's personal home when we've got the bulk racers out as they bully it and yes it comes in house of it's own accord ) and it really was only a matter of time. But they had a good time and that is what matters with a bird. Pied is Pied, a thing we call Hawk Bait. We glued on sequins in the hope of distracting the hawk. But there is only so much we can do. Not locking Pied up though. Pied needs The Garden.
poor little sweetie...
Poor little girl, her leg is hammered. Hope she gets to keep it. We were given a blue Crowned Conure 2 years ago who lived with my friends mom who smoked and then got dementia so I ended up with her.
Sha lived in a tiny cage her whole life and never got out. 2 years in she started having problems and allowed me to hold and scritch her. She however was happy and greeted us whenever we got home and took treats very nicely. She fell off her perch and I found her on the bottom of her cage but I scooped her up and hand fed her and she came back. Two weeks later she did it again so I held her and tried to feed her, the next morning she left us sitting on my stomach sleeping 😢
The vet said she was just wore out and things just shut down on her. She was at least in her mid 20s. Just wish I had worked with her sooner but I know she was happy and safe and knew she was loved at the end.
I miss her a lot more than I thought I would, she was quite a character.
I think your girl is going to be OK with time, she's active and strong, and she has you😍
It's possible the cool floor feels better on her legs, especially if they're swelling.
thank you for taking good care of her, what a sweet old lady bird
A tip for when you need to drill and put screws in pieces of small wood drill small pilot holes first also you might try soaking the wood for a few minutes maybe 30 it might keep them from splitting .🔥🤟😉🙏🇺🇸
I had to confine my cat for a couple months after a surgery, and since dog crates large enough to contain a litterbox tend to have large gaps between the bars, we got a fabric-and-mesh tent/playpen instead. It worked very well. The cat never managed to do any damage to the tent, but I don't know how a cat's mesh-ripping power compares to a toucan's.
It was Tenrai brand, and we picked it up on Amazon for like $80. (Not trying to sell you, just that's the one my cat couldn't rip through; I can't vouch for any other tent.)
Omg... 1800? That's awful. I'm so lucky here in Australia. We have 2 of the best avian vet clinics in the southern hemisphere hemisphere within 8km (5miles approx) of my home, and a consultation there is $85AUD (about 50USD). With blood tests, poop tests and meds, the average visit costs me around $250USD.
Re the lack of preening, perhaps a little spritz with a water spray with aloe in it might get her preening, which would also help with hydration.
Definitely low perching would help those hocks.
All the best with her, mate ❤
Look at that beautiful loaf of banana bread! ❤
Such a sweet girl, so unfortunate for her. She is so beautiful. I adore birds and have feeding stations for my Fish Crows that visit. Bird bath that the Grey Catbird loves bathing in everyday. I love animals and i hope the best for her.
Really good she's with you. Your able to pick up on all the little things and give her the care she needs.
She was still looking very sad at the beginning of the video, but by the end she already looks more hopeful!
Get well soon new bird baby!!
She is so cute! So pretty. ❤❤ bless her! I really hope she will not lose that poor leg! ❤️
Sending you both love ❤
Thank you for another update - so enjoying them. Thanks for showing the wrapping of her hock too; very interesting to see. Only ever done similar wraps on cats and dogs; you did such a tidy job with all the wriggling and biting. Looking forward to hearing about the vet visit.
Either drill your holes first to prevent the wood from splitting or take torch and heat your screws up first , that also prevents the wood from splitting.
these birds are so cool
Good on you for changing vets. That's highway robbery..
Good job Brock. Try wrapping some thin copper wire around her leg, it will help. Also look into Red Light LED or Red Light Laser therapy. Combined together I'm sure these will help her leg and hopefully avoid amputation. Maybe look into these two remedies, people have amazing results doing just the copper on its own. All the best. 😊
Thanks for the update, hope the legs can be saved enough so she can perch. What ever happens, shes in a good place ether way.
possibly try treating the wounds with manuka honey, then wrapping them?
This is so sweet that you do this
Poor baby. I hope her comfort level goes up, and her pain and suffering goes down. Meloxicam is good. My African Grey is so much more energetic and happy overall with Meloxicam twice a day (she had a stroke which partially disabled one foot). I have a very good avian vet nearby. By the way, my Grey often rests her chest on a ladder rung while standing on a lower ladder rung. It takes weight off her feet.
That’s a beautiful bird
Maybe vet wrap on those low perches you made would be softer for her hock? It looks like she's in good hands with you. Thank you for doing your best for the birds.
Aww, Im nervous for her too, your doing this with such kindness, I sure hope she can recover from. this, oh sweet baby girl your in great hands, he honestly cares so very much and thank you ❤❤
She is so lucky to have you in her life! Hang in there! She may be nervous around you now, but I'm convinced that in no time she will trust you and realize you are her friend.
🥺Aww, poor baby. She will be less nervous in due time, but she is in so much pain. She is so beautiful and reminds me so much of Toupac😍🥰🤗. My goodness, $1800 is steep! I hope she can be helped and won't need amputation. Give her lots of kisses and scritches for me!💋😘
I just want to say that I also live in Michigan and for them to take care of that dog as good as they do medically and to drive him all the way there shows me that they are amazing people who absolutely love their dog . I just want to tell them that they are wonderful humans and I am sending my support to my fellow Michiganders ❤. He looks beautiful.
Thank you for sharing your experience with us.🌻
Every move she’s making indicators of extreme painful discomfort and long suffering
I wonder if the blanket irritates her legs? and maybe the wood floors are cool and feel nice? this is how my elderly dogs always were. carpet too hot for an arthritic dog, but tile and wood comfy and cool
I am brand new to your videos and should probably keep my mouth shut....but is there a zoo near you with an avien vet that will see her? Bless you for your work with these precious babies.
I already have a pretty good network of support! she's long been to the vet since I had the chance to finally put this video up.
$1800 just for a vet to assess her?! That is ridiculous. Glad she’s getting your help 💕 rhia is my favorite girl! She has so much character 😆
Also I have to say you look a lot like early 2000s Chad kroeger with the hair and facial hair 😂
I can’t believe a vet visit without treatment is so very expensive. :/
One of the reasons we don’t have cats or dogs anymore, that and losing them is so hard.😢
Thanks for the update, Brock. The offer always stands that you have a place to stay in Texas if necessary!
Amazing how relatively calm and stoic toucans can be despite all the new experiences.
You obviously care alot about that girl. In good hands in my opinion. I know you will but keep at it. I still stand by my name suggestion - Pirogue. Best of luck to her.
Poor girl. Such a helpless feeling when you cant get help for her right away. what would cause her feet to get like that? Have kept birds all my life have never seen that...p.s She has beautiful eyes
You should be able to get iodine (povidine 1%) at any local pharmacy. It's what they use in hospital surgeries etc. Also, you might be able to find a 24 hour pharmacy in your area.
It would need to be diluted so it doesn't burn.
@2degucitas I've not seen anything over the counter (no prescription required) that would require dilution. I've only seen pvp 1%, which is what I was recommending. Yes, other higher solutions can be used in hospitals (as well as the 1%) but I've not seen that over the counter.
I was able to find some!
@2CANTV yay! I hope it helps her and you can find a vet asap. There are also 24 hour emergency vets in some cities. However, another possibility might be vet clinics at universities. I live near Ohio State University and it used to be that their vets were the only ones in our area to see exotics and snakes etc years ago.
You could also check with country vets (those serving poultry farms) and your local zoo for reference if your local vet is still unavailable and you can't find another. There are also wildlife rehab clinics that might be able to refer you to another vet. Perhaps some vets, who treat birds, volunteer there outside their clinics. Or the staff vet might know someone else who treats birds.
Good luck and keep us posted! :)
Edit: ah, just saw your post that she's been to the vet. Glad to hear it! I'm hoping you have good news! :)
Thanks!
Poor baby 😢 might lose her leg your such a good toucan daddy ❤
Gods, the noises she makes.... I'm imagining some ancient dinosaur lurking in the shadows when I hear it.
But nah.
Tis a lil bean.
really hope she gets better:(
She looks like she's hurting and that will keep her from being herself. May I ask if this is the vet hospital in Texas you're referring to? I believe this is who I see for my parrot. I don't know how to reach you to offer you a place to stay if you come this way? I know I'm a stranger, but I want to help you and this precious gal. Do you have an email? I live with my husband and my daughter and our home is open and welcome to you!!!!
Comment to give the OP KUDOS ^_^
She seemed so excited to have freedom of movement that she overdid it lmao. Luckily Brock is a good Toucan dad and put this little lady on tthe road to recovery.
Hopefully she winds up more cuddly than Taco turned out being (once he bonded with Jade anyway). Look forward to more updates!
Make a little splint with a stick that has a a flat piece of wood or plastic under it that is covering her sores so she can still use her legs but the weight goes on the splint kind of thing instead of her injuries that way you can treat it without having to worry about the weight making it worse again
Good job on that bandage!
For an old toucan she looks really good, I’m surprised. I hope her leg situation improves :(
I think a crib or playpen
and the baby mat
@2CANTV
Only if she knew you are here to be her friend/father and you only want to help her
a playpen sounds likea great solution
Maybe her leg can be saved, or replaced by a prostethic limb? Or she may become a couch bird, sweet child. I know you are doing all you can plus more Brock, do not blame yourself. You are with her now and her beak looks so much healthier.
The suspense is killing meeee
Oh nyoo i thought all toucans species were called toucansam
You should drill a hole in before you put the screw in. That way they don't split in half
Thank you for caring for her and for the update. I am a bit concerned though, throughout the video she’s continually stressed with the physical contact you are giving her. At 26:32 she looks like she’s too weak even to put up more personal boundaries besides biting. I understand if you have to be attentive to her and hand feed her though, and I’m sure you step away from her off camera. Just throughout each update it seems like she’s really weary if you, and I hope she can get rest on her own as she adjusts. As a viewer, I’m okay with only getting minimal video clips of her over the next few weeks if that means she gets to have the space she needs to recuperate. Regardless, thank you for caring for her, I can’t imagine her going to a better home, and I’m sorry to hear about the vet cost.
I gave her plenty of space but unfortunately I did have to cross her boundaries in order to keep her safe. she's all good now though. and yes, off camera I was giving her space. thank you for your concern!
@@2CANTV thanks for letting me know, that’s great she had her appointment too (i just saw the pinned post) I’m looking forwards to hearing the next update :)
She’s so sweet. 🥹 A family friend’s dog recently had to have a leg amputated due to joint fluid cancer, and they got her a cooling mat to help her with the swelling and phantom pain. She lays on it a lot and it does seem to help her. Maybe the same could help this baby?
@2cantv Heads up, when using small blocks of wood, pre-drill with a small drill bit before drilling the screws in, makes them less likely to split
Is she missing her mate?
she is. but he was also bullying her because of her age so it wouldn't be safe to keep them together.
@@2CANTVStockholm syndrome happens in birds too. Interesting.
Have you slowly poured water in the bowl infront of her so she can hear and identify the sound?
Do the birds like hearing soft jungle sounds in the background?
Would pool noodles work for perch paddling?
Toucan jail!
I gotta weird suggestion and understandably I know nothing about Toucans.what about a cat water fountain the ones that does a stream of water ?
Hm, I wonder if, with her legs being in pain, she's hopping onto the floor off of the blanket because the relative cool of the floor feels nice.
almost looks like bumble foot .
I know this seems crazy, but you might try laying down on the floor and letting her walk on you, next to you, because just being on the same level is sometimes cathartic to these upset birds. She is beaking you as a warning, but she's obviously not a cranky creature. It's tough to be so short...
Hmmm, how do these animals stay alive in the wild 😀
Yoy im on gavipintin and moloxicam
(most likely butchered that spelling dont want to get out of bed to get my pill bottles in my chinchilla room)
May loose my leg as well so I get that
Gabapentin! I'm on it as well
Oh I'm so sad for her and you. That injury looks so bad.. but she's going to heal. Even if she has to lose her leg, she'll adapt and be alright. You need a gofundme account. If i had $1800 i would give it to you...Bactine was something we used as kids for abrasions and slight injuries. It won't hurt to use it. It didn't sting on our Boo-boos. She may have a serious infection. The blanket might be keeping her too warm. Oh I'm so sad and worried about a person i don't know...water is ESSENTIAL! You might have to force water on her with a syringe... water is important. "Water in ya. Water in ya" we learned in vet tech school.
How much?! That appointment costs like a good monthly salary here, they're robbing you.
What if you put alittle water in her fruit bowl
Do you ever get noise complaints from neighbnors?
Good bird, good man. Keep petting them.
Please read she fears hurting more and rests over there so let her choose the pain is unrelenting and mind disturbing 😳 i can read that hopefully everyone gives a whole lot
He has it under control, thankfully! He stated right at the beginning of the video that he realized throughout the day that she needed her movement more restricted to the padded bin she’s in at the beginning and he’s arranging vet care for her.
It's nice that you are trying but if you don't have the funds then find a sanctuary that will take them
Yeah her legs look rough. I don't suppose you'll trade Beatrix for three budgies, lol?
🤨
So you take an animal that isn't a common creature here in America and can't afford to take care of it? Then beg people on social media?
I wish her luck throughout the weeks and hope the vet can help her that poor baby
