“One should never cry that it’s over with. One should be happy that it was.” My dad passed away last week at 85. My family and I partied and celebrated his life instead of lamenting his death. He was a happy guy.
Thank You Mr. Zawinul for all the wonderful music. "In a Silent Way" is in my top 10. I was lucky to see you 3 times in concert, my favorite being the Weather Report "Procession" tour. You're an inspiration. Thank You.
Boy Joe was intense! You see his eyes? You could see into his mind. I never heard anyone speak about Jaco Pastorius like that. Now my story: My first pro gig was in Ft. Lauderdale in 1978 in a C&W band. The drummer was Bob Herzog who wrote " Come on Come Over" the R&B tune on Jaco's first solo album. He was also the drummer in " Woodchuck" the first trio Jaco had. Then I kept meeting and playing with guys who grew up with Jaco. I would do a gig and a drummer would say " Jaco dropped by yesterday". This happened all the time. How come I was never there? Then in October 3rd 1984 I moved to St. Augustine Florida. Jaco had just spent September there. He was broke and homeless. Begging on the street. Playing in a club for a bottle of tequila and 50 bucks. The local punks abused him. They laughed at him then threw him in a garbage can. They pissed on him and then sprayed him with a can of gold paint. True story no one has heard. He tried to antagonize people so he would get beat up. He would never hit back. You see even then he was suicidal. Yet I was never meant to meet him. I've always wondered why?
“Mr Zawinul, he’s a little off sometimes….” Haha man you gotta love Jaco. I think Joe’s actual words to Jaco that day were something to the tune of “Get the fuck outta here!” 🤣🎼🎵🎶
@@karloarsch1579 Bud, Joe was an insufferable pr!k.. Everyone knows this.. Stop making excuses.. Joe didn't like Jaco's style, but Jaco was just too good and special to ignore. Obviously, persistent as well. It payed off. But Joe always preferred AJ-style players. Always complained that Jaco was too busy in his playing. He also refused to play Jaco's song Havona live... I don't think Joe was a bad guy, but he was an egomaniac and he wanted things his way. Everyone has their character and personality flaws.
and this comment is an example of what a great guy YOU are? Joe was hard to work with because he’s one of the greatest musicians to ever live, and when others didn’t meet his standard he was less than tactful. But he was a man filled with immense love - I guess your ears aren’t good enough to understand, but he wasn’t just playing notes, he was telling stories, stories of love mostly. You expect a genius to be a perfect gentleman. Word: geniuses rarely are.

“it was always easy to play with him” if you have had any experience with music, you understand this is the best compliment you can receive
Thank you for uploading this.
This interview was revealing about Jaco as it was about Zawinul. Two great Gypsy style originals! One born in Norristown PA, the other from Vienna.

My brother Cheikh Ndao bass player in Vienna is a BIG fan of Jaco.
Oh, really? While you're at it, what's his favourite brand of sneaker?
God bless you and your brother Cheikh and all the Ndao family.
@@robinwatson4282You're comparing his brother to John Goodwin the Lauderdale Jaco clone.

That's Accurate-But Jaco was undeterred

He practiced some English words better, than others. The problem is, that in his Viennese dialekt, P and T do not exist, there is only B and D.
Interesting!
Zawinul is know to have been an unprofessional jerk to his band mates. A we’ll hated guy
This is absolutely bull shit. Being Austrian he had a straight way to say things, which some people could not handle.
