  • Today I want to show you how the X100V performs in portrait photography. Finally. We will try out the standard lens, the teleconverter lens TCL X100 and compare it to the X-T3 with other Fujinon Lenses, try out some flash with portraits and also the digital teleconverter of the X100V.
    Many thanks to my models: Luca (my niece) and Anna (& her boyfriend, the camera operator at the shooting with Anna)!
    Have fun!

    It's nice to see someone other than myself using an X100 series camera for portraits. Nearly every video about any camera from that line is focused on 'street photography'. Worse yet are all the 'forum-tographers' spewing nonsense about needing at least an 85mm or such for portraits otherwise the images will be unflattering(believe me I could rant but don't want to offend the ignorant litlle *****'s). Before the current situation put a damper on things, my X100F with the TCL was my main camera for weekly 'online dating' shoots. The unassuming/unintimidating nature of the camera combined with the leaf shutter making even my tiny Flashpoint Zoom Mini(Godox V350) speedlight incredibly powerful means a lot. My clients(who are not models) are more at ease, resulting in better images, and I don't have to pack around so much gear. I still rely on my X-T2's for corporate work, and pack an X-T20/16-80 along on the dating shoots for some shots, but the X100 is so much more versatile than many give it credit for.

      Jimmy Hill Hey Jimmy. Thank you very much for the nice feedback. As I did in the video I have to admit that I still prefer my X-T3 with the 56mm f1.2. but would not hesitate to do a complete shooting with the combo X100V and TCLX100. Thx for watching and keep it up!

      @Sasha Bobrinsky There is 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 truth behind those rules though. How and where you crop arms/legs/feet/hands will have an effect on the feel of the image. Using Vogue as an example is kind of a stretch though because all the covers were of models. You could pretty much crop them any sort of weird way and they would still be models with all that entails.
      Do people put WAYYYY to much stock in those rules? Sure. I like to think of them as general guidelines instead that can be changed IF it suits the image.
      Now my corporate work(headshots for lawyers/realtors and such) are a different matter. Those clients expect a certain accepted final image and that is the reason I stick to my 90mm and follow the cropping 'rules' pretty closely. I can't very well crop across half their face at some weird angle with a fisheye lens, though that might make for a cool 'artistic' image if done right.

      I really enjoy the dialogue going on here. All I want to add is: In portraits (not the business type of) it’s all about showing personality and expression. It can be posed or completely natural, it doesn’t matter. And gear also does not matter at all, if you can achieve what you want. My personal opinion.

    I had one x100v to test last week and boy I loved it! It needs some time adjusting from the XT series I normally use but it's fairly quick. I also felt almost liberating to be able to go out with a small camera and nothing else, no heavy bags with 3-4 lenses etc. I'm seriously thinking about buying it now :)

    Still shooting portraits with my original x100. :) I like 35mm (equ.), it's a cool focal lengh for environmental portraits and a little more storytelling. On my X-T1 and film cameras I mainly shoot 50mm (equ.), everything else is too tight and flat for me, but that's just my taste. As for the new lens in the X100V, I'm not sure how much it'd interest me, I think portraits are a subject where old and flawed lenses can still shine, better than super oversharpened at least. :)

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Agreed. I also love my 35mm f1.4 wich also delivers some „magic“ via its imperfection. But the new 23mm f2 from the X100V still has character, especially together with the TCL X100. Thx for your feedback and for watching!

    • @chrissoclone
      @chrissoclone 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jayshooter_photo I'm afraid I'd not upgrade my x100 either but go with the 23mm lens, maybe coupled with an X-E body (I love the rangefinder style much more than X-T*). It's not as pretty as the x100V, but I must admit that the OVF is a wasted feature on me and not worth the extra cost, as cool as it might be.

    I have an x100v and an xt4. What is the difference with the 35 f1.4? I'm interested in the equivalent 50mm focal length and having it on x100v with its flash characteristics tickles me

    • @Jayshooter_photo
      @Jayshooter_photo  ปีที่แล้ว

      The main difference is the maximum aperture. The 35 is a lot "faster"...

  • @Ed-lz4jv
    @Ed-lz4jv 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I just use my 35mm F2.0 on my X-T20, do like it sometime better than focal range of the X100V, sharper than my X100F was, also took off the grip so X-T20 with the prime not much bigger than X100V.

    Very nice shots Jay, which goes to show that it’s the photographer, not the equipment. BTW, I got the X-T4 (I'm keeping the X-T2), I did my own non-scientific (really non-scientific LOL) testing/comparison and found that on a side by side the X-T4 locks focus faster (by a hair) than the X-T2. I like that the grip is a little larger, definitely like the longer battery life and that stills/movie switch so that I don't have to see any video settings on the menus (I only shoot stills). I’m not too crazy about the LCD screen, I prefer the tilt one for when I’m shooting from the “hip”, it’s OK in the vertical position, but not so much for shooting horizontally because now it sticks out on the side of the camera, but it’s something I can work with and I’m sure I’ll get used to it. I don’t like charging the battery in camera so I got the double charger (yes, I got an extra battery). To summarize and as I suspected, this camera did not make a better photographer (LOL), and to be honest, the only reason I got it's because I can. Stay safe Jay.

If you were provided images taken with the teleconverter at 50mm equivalent, but were not told they were taken with the teleconverter, would you be able to discern any loss of quality? I cannot see any such loss, but of course, it would be impossible to appreciate subtle differences via a video seen on my iPad. Thank you./Warren

      I probably could not. But that’s because I don’t care so much about it. It’s more about the image itself I am interested in.
