Missed one-North African Elephant, also known as Barbary Elephant, Carthaginian Elephant, Atlas Elephant, and North African Forest Elephant. (Yes, all are names for the same elephant- Loxodonta africana pharaohensis)
Extinct subspecies which got extinct because Romans used it in games.
I found contradicting references to its size. Elephants crossing the Alps with Hannibal are described as large(but that could be over-exaggeration to make it seem it was harder t defeat them), and it is also possible that Hannibal at least some of Hannibal's animals were Syrian subspecies(Elephas maximus asurus)-hence different size.
However, undoubted North African subspecies-which stretched from Atlas mountains in nowadays Morocco to parts of Egypt(all of North Africa), were described as smaller than the Indian elephant, just cca 2.5 m or 8'2''. Given that a big part of such territory was and is desert, it is possible that it was desert species(desert-adapted species) and then a smaller size would make sense.
As would roman mosaic depicting it with very wide feet just as desert species in Namibia has.

@@BigBrotherTheWatcher1984 Idk tbh. There are two roman depiction I know of. Sculpture and mozaic, supposedly of north african elephant. Mozaic shows small ears, while sculpure showed ears sort of mid size between asian and african. If those depictions are true it really brings up big questions about the species habitat. As I said, feet say desert elephant, but ears say forest elephant, because smaller ears cannot handle heat that well.

Namadicus' extinction was closer to Mesopotamia's founding then we are today. Its terrible how close history came to having Persian armies riding on their backs like Lord of the Rings and making an insane impression on Greeks who would've likely left behind great stories about it.
The dawn of Civilization just barely missed out on seeing so many giant species that died around 10k years ago. Even if they had all just made it up into the mdidle ages, imagine what Medieval Europe wouldve been like. Chronicles of Narnia type shit.

They were somewhat smaller. But, I think they had the largest tusks. Plus the idea of a subarctic elephant is rather exotic sounding so they just get attention for that reason. Rhinos, on the other hand, Ice Age Eurasian rhinos were larger than their modern day counterparts. Most bovids too. Ice Age cattle and bison were huge.

    • @michiganscythian2445
      @michiganscythian2445 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

And not to ramble, but I don’t think prehistoric mammals get enough attention compared to dinosaurs, and many of them overlapped with modern humans. Prehistoric giraffes are fascinating, much more robust with moose like horns. Camels originated in northern Canada and some of them were huge. The synthoceras (my spelling may be wrong) looked like a muscular antelope with a huge nose horn, and many others

Interesting facts about elephants vs mammoths
    Steppe mammoths
Average shoulder height for males : 4 metres
Average body mass for males: 11 tonnes
Largest shoulder height: 5.18 metres (Songhua River mammoth)
Largest body mass: 18.7 tonnes (almost as heavy as Paraceratherium!)
    Columbian mammoths
Average shoulder height for males : 3.75 metres
Average body mass for males: 9.5 tonnes
    Largest shoulder height: 4.2 metres
    Largest body mass: 12.5 tonnes
African bush elephants (largest species in today’s world)
Average shoulder height for males : 3.36 metres (I am taking the maximum average height)
Average body mass for males: 6.9 tonnes
Largest shoulder height: 3.96 metres (Almost rivalling a T-Rex in size and height)
    Largest body mass: 10.4 tonnes
    Woolly mammoths
Average shoulder height for males : 3.31 metres
Average body mass for males: 6.5 tonnes
    Largest shoulder height: 3.49 metres
    Largest body mass: 8.2 tonnes
    Indian elephants
Average shoulder height for males : 3.2 metres
Average body mass for males: 5.4 tonnes
Largest shoulder height: 3.43 metres (Raja Gaj)
    Largest body mass: Not sure
African forest elephants (smallest elephant species in today’s world)
Average shoulder height for males : 2.4 metres
Average body mass for males: 4.8 tonnes
    Largest shoulder height: 3.0 metres
    Largest body mass: 7 tonnes
    Source: Wikipedia
Even larger elephant species was found, to be even bigger than the biggest mammoths ever existed.
    Name: Palaeoloxodon namadicus
    Shoulder height: 5.2 metres
Body mass: 22 tones (estimated by Larramendi)
This estimate should be "taken with a grain of salt", as Larramendi stated that he could not locate the specimen, but speculated that it may be stored in the Indian Museum of Kolkata. If the estimate is correct, P. namadicus could possibly be the largest land mammal ever, exceeding even paraceratheres in size.
    Source: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Palaeoloxodon_namadicus
So, elephants still win over mammoths. :)
