From the mysterious discoveries of the UAC to the demonic invasion that plunges the base into chaos, we'll cover it all, breaking down key moments, characters, and lore.
Witness the awakening of unimaginable horrors as scientists toy with the fabric of reality. Learn about the key players like Dr. Betruger, whose ambition leads to catastrophic consequences, and Dr. Elizabeth McNeil, who risks it all to stop the demonic invasion. Experience the gripping narrative that begins with an unidentified signal on Mars, culminating in an epic showdown with the malefic form of Dr. Betruger.
Whether you're a Doom veteran or new to the series, this comprehensive look at Doom 3's story will leave you both intrigued and terrified. So grab your BFG and flashlight, it's time to face your fears.

Thank you all I'm glad you enjoy this video! If you have suggestions for other games that would suit this style of video, please share them with me I would be glad to take a look at them :)
Doom 2016 and Eternal, please!
This chapter in DOOMs history is highly underrated and doesn't get the respect it deserves.
You're missing a lot of story from the Lost Mission, including a group of survivors escaping via a dropship, their attempts at stopping a new prototype, long-ranged transporter from allowing demons to deploy directly onto Earth, and that Betreuger was likely possessed/body-jacked on his first journey to Hell (what came back wasn't him inside his meat-suit).
Doom 3 was and still is one of the best "horror" games I've ever played. One of few that actually got me jumping from a chair.
I learned very quickly to NEVER play this game with headphones on!
Doom 3 and Alien Isolation for the Win 👍
I first played doom 3 when I was about 12 years old and holy shit. That game turned me into a man in its self lol. Such a good game!
Same bro super good game
Yup
Don't understand how this game isn't held in higher regard. I remember I had just upgraded my PC big time. The graphics were freakin insane at the time. Sometimes I'd just stop and stare at the environment. I like it better than any of the other Doom games.
Its a lot more atomspheric than newer cartoon like Dooms. Storyline in Doom 3 actually has some muscle too it as opposed to nonsense fast paced gameplay of the newer Dooms.
Can't believe it's been nearly 20 years since I played Doom 3. I remember really enjoying it, marine throws bouncy grenades like footballs.
and some how it comes backs to you blowing you up instade enemies good times.
Dude 20 years ago I couldnt play this game, it absolutely terrified me, I need to play it now
@@ryanloney3448look into quake 4 after that’s a great game my dumb ass played it in 5th grade
This is what puts Doom 3 above the others, its lore, it's just too good once you get into it.
You did a fine job doing recreations of the audiologs, loved the one about the eyes looking back at the probe.
Literally just about to comment this myself, seeing a rendition of the video footage heard so much about was cool as hell
3 months ago. So this is in 2023.
I so much love how the fandom of Doom 3 is small, but so die-hard. We will never let this survival horror game die. Ever. We need a remake too.
And yes, I said "Survival Horror", not shooter. Because that is what it is. Scarce ammo, low health, tricky monsters, dilemmas. This is not a dumb shooter, this has strategy and the never ending hunt for scarce ammo. Like Dead Space, and I love that game too.
I like to think the events of DOOM 3 are a prequel to OG Doom. The demon gateway was in Mars and somehow they got to Phobos. Doom 3 marine is different guy, not the Slayer. He tried to warn people when he got back to earth but the UAC dismissed his claims and then BAM! Doom 2 Hell On Earth. I know is a strech but is not that far fetched, right?
Doom 3 deserves an own sequel IMO. Would love to wander through dark corridors, fighting Imps, Hellknights,... in that setting again.
Doom 3's lore works so well because it's introduced to the player in a gradual and organic manner, i.e. the story details are fully integrated into the game world and feel like a natural part of it. It builds up over time too - first, as the game starts, you only get vague rumors of people being spooked and strange things going on in the UAC base, then later you start learning of dangerous accidents and people going insane... and around the middle of the game you begin to learn about the ancient ruins, artifacts, and the UAC's attempts to study the demons. The full scope of the lore is revealed as you near the end of the game, and you finally get the complete picture. The story pacing is neither too fast, nor too slow.
By contrast, Doom Eternal just bombards you with huge chunks of Codex text, which you have to read outside of normal gameplay. These texts don't feel like natural parts of the levels you visit.
Yea but no one plays doom for the plot, don’t shit on eternal because you had to read more than usual. That’s entirely your fucking problem. Doom 3 was a fantastic game for its time but it was not a proper doom game. I love doom 3 too.
@@jayjayfool1996 - Ugh, enough of this "proper Doom game" bullshit already! There never was a specific list of rules about what makes a "proper" Doom game or not. Ask the original id Soft team, if you want to, and they'll tell you the same.
The real reason people are calling Doom 3 a "bad" Doom game is simply because they can't think of any legitimate criticism for it. It's always easier to just make up some imaginary standards and judge the game by them, instead of formulate convincing arguments against it. But these "standards" simply don't exist - they are just an expression of people's personal tastes. I'm sure id Software would never start dividing their own games into "proper" and "improper." So why are we doing it?
And no, reading doesn't bother me (I work in academia, so I do tons of reading and writing). It's the way the text is presented that annoys me. It just feels so artificial. It doesn't contribute to the overall experience.
@@jayjayfool1996damn bruh "it's entirely your fuckin problem" wow man you're an edge lord. Get over yourself
@@AlexeiVoroninratio
I do love how Eternal connected Doom 3's ancient Martians as the Night Sentinels that lived under mars before fleeing to Earth and becoming Humans.
Eternal is conected to doom 64 not doom 3, doom 3 was tought of as an alternative universe, idk where you got it all but you are entirely wrong
@@mattd339 Play lost levels of doom 64, then talk again, it is indeed connected as he is found by the sentinel after doom 64's events, he gone trough a portal to the unknown then in eternal is told he was found wandering, I played both games, no way stuff isnt connected when both mention similar stuff.
@@ChikuEnjoyer Hugo himself said it was the same universe but a different earth. The Slayer himself is from a different universe than the one in 2016 and Eternal.
I got it from official sources, the devs and the game.
@@mattd339 That was already a thing way before Hugo made Doom games because Hell and the Quake multiverse as a whole doesn't have defined laws of time and reality.
This is how in games like Quake 3 and Champions we have all these different characters from different dimensions and periods of time fighting along side and against eachother.
There are even 2 different BJ Blazkowicz in parallels timelines, in New order you can see the Doom timeline in BJ's dreams where he can see through the eyes of the other BJ that won WW2...
This has literally been a thing for decades and it's been a good thing too because it's given us all the great games and settings for them instead of just being reboots and rewrites ignoring the previous titles.
@@mattd339 Oppose to the guys that literally run ID Software and Pete Hines of Bethesda's Publishing and John Carmack/Romero I'd say he holds no weight over them.
All of the games share a multiverse but non of them are connected in a way to effect eachother outside of cameos like Hebeth in Eternal/Doom 3 and multiplayer games like Champions and 3.
They might share a multiverse but the stories between them are self contained like they didn't.
It's why BJ from Wolf3D and RTCW can be Doomslayer's Great Great Grandfather but they both have nothing to do with eachother outside of that one nod and the creation of the first Cyber Demon.
Doom 3 is my favourite Doom game by far, as the franchise needed this level of world-building to tell a very interesting story, absent from the older Doom games. To think that Doom 2016 and Doom Eternal still use aspects of Doom 3 itself, as well as massive amounts of lore and storytelling, is a testament to Doom 3's enduring legacy.
Thank you for covering this story! Love DooM 3, play it about twice a year once in summer and again in October/November.
It's been installed on my PC since I first got into PC gaming back in 2006. Literally, always installed, even if I don't plan on playing for awhile. lol
Love DOOM 3, played the Xbox port of this and Resurrection of Evil when they came out. Got the BFG Edition on PS3, along with DOOM 3 VR on the PSVR and finally the Switch version!
I also replay it every 2 or 3 years. Glad to see others still remember it so fondly. 😊
I usually play it in December.
I've tried a couple times to give it a chance. Does it get better the further into the game you go? To me everyone looks the same just with different beards. I think I'll try again tonight with headphones to see if maybe I just wasn't in the mood before.
now THIS is the perfect example of a game that needs to be remastered
It needs a proper remake, we need more terrifying FPS like D3 these days.
People with platforms like to crap on this amazing game but I find it extremely underrated. It scared the crap out of me when I was young so I couldn’t play it new but a few years later, when my balls finally dropped, I enjoyed it thoroughly lol. This was a good “misstep” by ID software. It set a new standard for survival science fiction horror and made several technological leaps in graphics for the time. Especially the Carmack shading technique.
Great game and great pacing, though not like previous and continuing Doom Games but a successful hiccup, if you will.
Yeah, just because it wasn't full speed running ,shooting like the original games, some people stuck their nose up at it. It ended up being a great change up, the immersion is amazing in the game, good story. Something about the graphics engine, lighting and all still is creepy as hell to me, even these days. It brought true horror and fear from the Doom franchise (Doom and Doom II were not scary but with rare feeling of being creeped out), Doom 2016 is fun but not scary really either. I've played through Doom 3 at least 3 or 4 times over the years, and last playthrough was as enjoyable as ever.
I'm a huge Doom fan, but I always have had a soft spot for D3 first and formost.
This is where the story comes from and where the real suspense and terror drives in these games.
All other Doom games are great and really amazing, but lack story and lore.
D3 always made a bit more sense because of it's narrative and great characters.
Damn good video and good narration.
I loved DOOM 3 ….I still wonder about Sargent Kelly ….was he bad from the beginning ?…or was he slowly turned evil….?…I always wondered…either way I loved the atmosphere of the game …I can’t believe it turns 20 next year
I think he was on our side until the hell's corruption/lost soul got in to him and turned him against us, Kelly is my favorite character of doom 3 😂
Absolutely loving these new videos. What I really liked with doom 3 was the new spin they gave on the original story. If you read the manual of the original game, it follows very similar beats. Only the player origin has slightly changed. And I think its great being able to play through and see basically what was written in the original lore.
See when they mentioned multiple eyes staring back at the drone in the footage I always assumed it was multiple eyes of one creature like an Imp.
This was incredible, no where could you get a lore video this robust on the lore of Doom 3. I played through it all for the first time 2 months ago surprisingly. My entire life I was terrified to play this game as the box art alone terrified me as a kid. The story always fascinated me with a immense level of world building plus, the length of the game made for great pacing. It was a believable Hell invasion and the audio logs had me sympathize with the UAC staff to a point where I really hoped they made it. Overall, thank you so much for the video!
dude your voice is awesome you should become a narrator or something
I'm glad you enjoyed the narration! Just to clarify, the voice you heard is from an online service I use to generate the audio.

the Betruger and Marine Doom story deserves to come back again please someone make this possible we need this after all great stories and games matters to us fans of them .
Great video. You're channel deserves more subscribers then it does now.
I like Doom 3, it's slow sure but the atmosphere and attention to details make for it. Great analysis, man! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Only complaints for me was the jumping and no flash light on guns (I know, fixed in BFG edition)
The video is absolutely stunning, narrated to perfection, and it had me glued to the screen the whole time. I just finished Doom 3 and wanted to delve deeper into the story and lore. The narrator's voice adds that extra touch that makes the video practically perfect. I hope your channel can achieve enormous success because it truly deserves it.
This..was…phenomenal your attention to detail on everything from the audio logs, story to editing the bit and pieces of the game to set the atmosphere was immaculate 10/10. This makes me love doom 3 even more than I did before which I thought was impossible already. Please do more lore videos like this it was fascinating to watch and enjoy.

This was an excellently produced piece. Thank you so much!!
I love your videos man, this is the Doom 3 content I was looking for all these years! Keep up the amazing work
From the way the videos are linked - to the very professional script and voiceover - really top work. Surprised you have so few subscribers!
Character named "Dr. Betruger" is being introduced. Germans be like: "Hmm... could this be the bad guy? The name MIGHT contain a clue..."
Amazing work again! I just discovered your channel yesterday searching-up Quake lore. How have I not found this awesome channel earlier?

The Simon Garlick's voiceover is my favourite audio-log of all time.
Maaan, what an acting performance! I just can't hold it..
It's even better than the Riddick: Athena's NPCs play!
I always liked that doom 3 was written like doom cubed and the soul cube was central to the game. Very satisfying lol. I also like your voice and the video so thanks for the effort to make it.
Unbelievable production quality for a channel with 607 subscribers. Well, 608. Great voice for narration, by the way! I'll definitely look forward to more of your videos.
Awesome video full of lore! Thank you!
Videos like this are my bedtime stories. So cozy.
Great video. You deserve more subs!
Doom 3 is my favorite Doom and one of my all time favorite shooters. They don't make them like this anymore the culture was just right for the horror shooters of the early 2000s.
Excellent video, and chronological order.
I want this guy to do a Dead Space series story line. I feel like I am back in my pre-teen years watching those old 80s style docos on the Fall of Singapore or Rats of Tobruk. Such a great voice.
Fantastic video. Thank you!
DOOM 3 for me was the thing that ushered in a new age of FPS games, just like DOOM did for the early 90s and Unreal did for the late 90s.
man this is phenomenal! I had to sub after this
I could listen to you narrate all day! Lovely voice for this type of stuff!
I'm glad you enjoyed the narration! Just to clarify, the voice you heard is from an online service I use to generate the audio.
Love his voice, kept me interested in the whole video. Why isn't this video monetized?
thank you for making this
I've been hoping for this exact video for so long. Every time I play Doom 3 I tell myself to actually stop and read each PDF, listen to every audio log, play every video disk and eavesdrop on every npc, but each time I actually play the game my lizard brain takes over and I end up skipping all that and shooting everything in sight until the credits roll, only using my own PDF for access codes. Thank you so much for the effort, this is something I will watch over and over again.
Dude yes thank you for this...ALOT of fun....doom3 is more of a horror game then a doom game.
.slower paced but but it definitely full of soul.... my 2 best friends and i beat it together in my basement with 5.1 surround sound...scared the shit out our teenage minds ...i also had 3 kittens at the time running around in the dark making noises which feaked us out too ( we were all smoking the devil lettuce) ...more then once we would be tapping a toe or fingers...and a cat would jump at us and wed feel little claws at the same time one of us was fighting a hell knight or an imp and make us scream in terror .....omg sooo much fun! We stayed up all night scaring the piss outta each other till we beat it! ... appreciate the nostalgia hit sir!
The more I hear about Malcom, the more I realize he and the Dunwich lady from Fallout 4 have in common. Both are the puppets of their preferred master, both ignored countless safety procedures, both pushed their employees and equipment to their limits, and both were obsessed with what was buried deep under ground. Malcom happened to find everything he needed before Dunwich could retrieve or awaken the giant
It was the first game since RE1 that actually scared me 😁😁
If lost Missions is anything to go by their was one survivor of Bravo team and a scientist who helped him stop another Demon Portal during the time the main Marine was soon to face the CyberDemon and Defeated Saboath and was recovered by the Marines who got the distress signal thanks to either the Maine Marine or Betruger and wether it was the same one or a weaker version the Bravo Marine killed a Hell Guardian most likely around the same time Main Marine killed the CyberDemon. Which technically means there would be 3 survivors which would either contradict the original game or the Bravo Marine and the scientist helping him were saved after the Maine marine.
if i remember McNeil says "welcome home marine" while the screen is faded which implies he made it back
I admit, I like Doom 3 more than later games. But then I like the horror scifi aspect of it more than shooter throw back (which was good) of Doom 4/Eternal. Though I Doom 3's teleportation tech using Hell as conduit, is very similar to how 40k teleportation works through the Warp. In fact in retrospect Doom 3 similarities probably got me into book side of 40k. I would still love a remake with Unreal 5 or equivalent.
Amazing video, this game is so underrated
This channel is golden
Great video. I love Doom 3 since release
I love how it's implied that at some point in during the original invasion of Mars doom guy was there somehow lol
Awesome overview
You have a great voice for narration, keep it up! Lore videos are great and if you did more I would be watching!
The narrators voice is on point with some really well known video games and audio books, who is the voice of this video? Or rather, who is the voice cast of this and the quake videos? They are all really good.
My absolute favorite doom game ever!!! Can't ever get enough of this game.
I adore doom 3 so much. It's such a amazing game and I want more!!!
As far as Sgt Kelly is concerned, I'm convinced he was never in league with Betruger, he was simply following military protocol wanting the distress signal sent out for reinforcements, you can clearly tell that he was ambushed and turned between the event of sending out the signal and his next video call to you setting you up for the ambush that Swan's bodyguard was the victim of.
Something I learned years ago that is a nice, in-plain sight detail is that Betruger's name in German means cheater, deceiver, and/or imposter. I'm uncertain if he was possessed from the beginning or if he was just motivated by greed and power up until the point he made the unplanned jump by himself; and then he was fully compromised by Hell. I could also see him be slowly corrupted as the expeditions were just starting and having visions from the demons or just subtle influences being put upon him since he's the absolute highest authority in the scientific community on Mars. Great video.
I don’t care what anyone says - Doom 3 is the best in the franchise - and yes, I do mean the ENTIRE franchise.
The creepy and haunting atmosphere, the claustrophobic settings, dim lighting, and unsettling human interactions gives you a feeling of fear and paranoia like no other game. It makes you feel like you’re there on the base, and perfectly recreates what an actual demonic invasion from hell might look and sound like.
The audio logs were a masterpiece of storytelling as well, as they offer critical insight and gameplay tips as well as information on the lore. Plus, the voice acting is superb. You can really feel the fear and tension in the voices, and you’re left with only your imagination to fill in the gaps.
And, you still get that “classic” doom feel during the last part of the game and the demon hordes are swarming you, and you have to run and gun to stay alive.
Having said that, I’m not discounting the original doom games or the 2016 sequel. Those were fantastic in their own right. But after a while, it began to feel repetitive. Once you had played through an episode, you basically played them all. And 2016, as great as it was, didn’t really add anything new other than some upgrades weapons, faster gameplay, nice graphical upgrades, and cool death animations. But at its core, it was just a next-Gen rehash of the first two games.
And eternal? Yeah, garbage. Plain and simple. Not only is it the absolute worst in the doom franchise, it’s also one of the worst video games of all time, period. Full stop.
Also, amazing video. The way you tell the story is incredibly engaging. Would love to see more horror game-themed deep dives like this.
You just made a TV quality documentary with equally good narration of a Doom 3.
The real nightmare fuel is realizing that the entire ancient civilization (early humans) basically went to hell to suffer eternally as a result of the original demonic invasion.
One slight correction: Mars City was the first base constructed on Mars NOT the Alpha Labs. Alpha Labs was created after the construction of Mars City. It was during the construction of Mars City that the UAC discovered the Ancient Martian Civilization Ruins.
I really wish they would revisit quake and Doom 3 horror. That stuff was awesome.
fun fact:
betruger means 'deceiver' or 'betrayer' in german.
You could have put this as a documentary on tv and it would send a shiver down peoples spine since they have no idea about this game.
Sabaoth: Your mission was always to die, soldier” Sarge was in on it from the start.
It's cool how the video feels like a historical documentary that you would see on cable TV in the early 2000s.
Great job.
