Wow, wasn't expecting TH-cam to recommend me a video of my daily commute for 4 months.
I rode Provo - SLC and would work on my laptop at the table seats. The views really are beautiful, especially when you pass Utah Lake and go through the Traverse mountains. I also enjoyed the views of stop-and-go traffic on I15 as we rolled past at 78mph 😂
Ha, small world! Frontrunner is a perfect commuter line for the area, and those views really are stunning.
I like those commuter/regional rail trip reports. They give an interesting look into the less glamorous, but very important part of the US rail infrastructure. Sure Amtrak long distance is impressive and I am gonna like them as well. But this here is my kind of video.
I am glad to see that Frontrunner uses actual seats and not those benches which can be seen on so many US commuter rail systems.
I'm glad you appreciate these kind of videos too. There's so many smaller networks around the US that go overlooked by many content creators, so I do my best to cover each and every one equally.
The current double tracking project will improve this service a lot with double frequency and Sunday service. Will be interesting to see if UTA gets Stadler rolling stock since the US Stadler factory is in Salt Lake.
Frontrunner is likely the next ComRail to go Stadler
Frontrunner trains looking like Caltrains with UTA logos powered by overhead catenary, yep, I could see that, Railrunner in New Mexico should consider this, too!!
Makes sense given that Stadler's US factory is in SLC.
Imagine if these Stadler KISS EMU:s take over the role that the Bombardier BiLevel currently plays as commuter rail rolling stock in North America.
And basically everything is already going for it. Ridership is adequate, one line in Provo-Salt Lake City-Ogden has the same ridership as 4 in the Denver area, and those are electrified already…
I wouldn't be surprised if they're next. It's the perfect setup too, as they operated on dedicated right of way, so electrification wouldn't affect freight operations.
4:00 I would clarify that the USB ports are USB-A rather than USB-C or USB Micro. I know this is not a big deal but given these ports do exist in the wild and there can be confusion, adding that bit of information would be nice bonus.
I never knew they had commuter rail service in that part of Utah, I love it!
Most people forget it exists, but to the locals, it's a key piece of infrastructure connecting the Wasatch Front.
As always, well made and enjoyable! I rode behind UP 8444 from Salt Lake City to Provo in 1977. . . . . . long before Frontrunner was built!
Thank you! That ride behind UP 8444 must have been incredible. Would love to make a video of a journey like that in the future.
FrontRunner is definitely one of the most underappreciated US regional rail systems with its relatively clockface schedule (every hour uniformly throughout the day and every 30 min during peak hours) and dedicated tracks that allow for better reliability and level boarding due to the absence of freight. I hope they consider electrifying the service in the future in addition to already planned double tracking projects, which would make it among the best regional rail systems in the country.
Yeah! And with the layout of the urban region and the fact the service already runs on its own tracks the whole way, it should make even further upgrades very easy and viable! Like double tracking the line and running trains as frequently as every 15 minutes or even every 10. The region definitely has enough people and enough travel demand to justify such investments. Especially with upcoming winter olympics.
The washroom is a more recent renovation. Many Bombardier styles coaches have received this style washroom over the last decade to comply with accessibility laws and requirements. GO Transit in Ontario, Canada has these newer large washrooms.
North from Salt Lake is Ogden; Ogden has a nice outdoor viewing area for some very nice Union Pacific rolling stock.
Imagine if METRA's trains were this good... Wow, I'm jealous!!
Utah kicking Colorado in commuter rail
Nah, RTD Commuter rail is more extensive, more frequent and sees over double the passenger numbers. RTD's entire system is also electrified with new Hyundai Silverliner 5s.
FrontRunner gets a lot right, but also some things wrong. What's great is the weekday all-day, two-way 30-minute frequency and basically totally seperated right of way that makes this frequency possible. What's not so great is the rather poor development around a number of stations and the lack of sunday service. The argument I've heard for a lack of sunday service, that those days are used for maintenance, also seems odd. A rail line doesn't require weekly maintenance, so they should really get on with implementing at least hourly sunday service.
Sunday service sounds like a religious thing, it is Mormon central 🙄
@@ryan225360 That's what I always suspected, but it was never said to me this way. Maybe they can't officially cite religious reasons so they make up another excuse?
No sunday service was due to demands by the LDS church.
@@mrvwbug4423 Part of me thinks that could be true, except that the same LDS church also has consistently paid UTA a bunch of money twice a year to let people with general conference tickets (on a Sunday 😱) ride TRAX and buses for free. And I've definitely seen missionaries on buses on Sundays as well. Not everything is a conspiracy, even if I would get a good chuckle out of it actually being a conspiracy.
7:02 not all cars have bathrooms unfortunately, but usually 2 out of 3 cars on a train has one, with at least one bathroom per train
these are such small train sets compared to anything go runs
